Although the outdated idea of calculating risk as the deterministic product of its likelihood and impact is not entirely a thing of the past, a multitude of organizations have adopted the usage of probabilistic methods for risk analysis, as they better reflect the inherent uncertainty of cost and risk estimates with ranges. But are these advancements sufficient in a complex environment such as tunnelling projects, where inadequate modelling of cost and risk can result in estimate discrepancies that run into millions of dollars? This paper explores two advanced probabilistic modelling techniques for tunnelling projects. The first one demonstrates how the cost and schedule uncertainty related to changes in excavation and support classes can be modelled with correlated variables. The second example models the risk related to explosive ordnance clearance on construction sites using a probabilistic event tree.

The four papers in this session illustrate two different directions in which computer graphics seem to be developing. The first of these is in the handling and storage of geological information. The increasing use of micro-computers with limited storage facilities has seen a concomitant increase in the need to store geological data in as efficient a form as possible. It has also seen a recognition of the particular types of data which are used in a geological or mining analysis. Unlike many other fields, observations of drill cores, geological interpretations, structure and many other variables require storage in a readily accessible form. The authors of two papers in this session deal directly with Geological Information Systems. They discuss the setup, the specification of such systems, and the practical uses of the systems once in operation.

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

Samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are used in the production of SmCo permanent magnets, which have excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Of the two types of SmCo magnets, one contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2 percent. This paper focuses on the recycling of iron (Fe)-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Biodiversity assessments that are developed in different stages of a mining project, have different objectives that define the methodology to be used in each of these stages. In this way, we define two stages of a project: 1) the time at which assesses the state of biodiversity or biological components, before any intervention in the project area, previously defining the area of direct influence and indirect influence of the project for each biological group to be evaluated and 2) the time when certain groups or biological, are monitored during the developmental stages of the project with you to obtain information about the level impact they may have, for project activities. It discusses the methodological differences that must be used in both biodiversity assessments: to develop biological baselines and in those assessments aimed at monitoring different components of biodiversity.

This study investigates the application of fly ash as a high-strength, water-resistant precast construction material through geopolymerization. The experimental results show that working conditions such as water content, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, curing temperature and curing time significantly affect the mechanical properties of the geopolymer matrix. Through optimization, compressive strength above 100 MPa was achieved, and the optimum working conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 10 M, water content of approximately 14 to 15 percent, and curing at 90 °C in an oven for one day or at ambient condition for three weeks. Water-soaking tests show that the geopolymerization product has high water resistance without losing noticeable compressive strength even after one month of soaking time. The findings provide a novel method to apply fly ash as a high-strength, water-resistant precast construction material.

Lafarge Corporation's Texas Quarry, in Baltimore MD, achieved a substantial expansion of pit reserves by removing an inactive underground mine. The daylighting program, designed, and completed in 1997, open pit mined more than400 meters of room and pillar workings which were originally developed to recover high brightness Calcium Carbonate. The project proved to be a challenge throughout its course as the pit plan was modified and successful daylighting techniques were developed to remove the mine without adversely affecting the safety of the operation, quality of the stone recovered, or negatively impacting the surrounding community. The design parameters and techniques developed and implemented at Texas may prove of interest to other operators as they are faced with daylighting opportunities. This article will detail the challenges we faced and the solutions which made the project a success.

Discussion by E.S. Cheney Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural -tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. The performance of the versatile McNally Wedag horizontal vibratory centrifuge for dewatering ultra fine 0.5 x 0.15 mm (28 x 100 mesh) material has proven to be success¬ful and the results presented herein will examine its capabilities in terms of capacity, solids capture, product moisture, effluent solids, and size analysis. Centrifugal dewatering of fine refuse has proven t to be another application for which this unit has performed exceptionally well.

A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.

Like our wives, the comminution of brittle solids is easy to recognize but difficult to describe. However, describing it we must. Describing the fracture mechanism of brittle solids permits the eventual mathematical quantification of the results, process optimization and control strategies. This paper presents a physical model of brittle solid comminution that explains why the slope of the log-log size distribution curves have a slope of one or less in the smaller particle sizes. To develop the hypothesis, modifications of the Gaudin Meloy physical model are made. In brittle solids, comminution takes place by cracks propagating through the material. These cracks may bifurcate as they move. Cracks may terminate either on the original surface of the material, or on a secondary crack within the material formed earlier in the comminution process.

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man's environment and man's adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

It is not often that the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management, Office of the Solicitor, and Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA) jointly act to do the mining industry a good turn. That happened, however, in the recent decision, Schlosser v. Pierce, 92 IBLA 109 (1986). It was ruled that the theorized "independent mine requirement" was not a part of the discovery standard for mining claim validity under the 1872 Mining Law. The phrase "independent mine requirement" would require the mineral reserves within the boundaries of each individual mining claim in a claim group to support an independent economic mining operation. This, without regard to the fact that reserves on adjacent claims could be mined in a group operation, resulting in greatly reduced mining and marketing costs per ton of ore. Such a rule would render invalid under the 1872 Mining Law mining claims for almost all low-grade, high-tonnage, commercially valuable mineral deposits. Until the Schlosser case, no judicial or administrative decision had addressed the issue of the independent mine requirement. Nonetheless, a series of Interior decisions in the 1970s implied such a rule. Even the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation reluctantly concluded in 1984 that, "each claim to be valid must be capable of being operated at a profit independently of any other claim," the Foundation did criticize the rule as "excessively stringent" and urged the adoption of a "more realistic rule." Fortunately, the IBLA did just that in Schlosser when it ruled that the "application of a requirement that each claim be independently capable of being mined and marketed at a profit is rejected," 92 IBLA at 134. Now, a year after the 1986 decision, there remains some unwarranted confusion over the issue resolved in, and the meaning of, the Schlosser decision. There is no need for this confusion. The Interior Department's decision is a clear and legally sound victory for the mining industry. Grazing rights vs. mining claims The Schlosser case was an unusual mining claim contest. A private contest was brought before the Interior Department. Schlosser was a federal grazing lessee and surface owner. He filed against Pierce, the locator of a group of mining claims for bentonite over the same lands. At a hearing before interior's administrative law judge (alj), Schlosser's counsel began laying the foundation for the independent mine requirement. Counsel asked the mining claimant's expert whether he would go through the permitting procedure, road building, and reclamation just to mine the amount of bentonite on any one claim in the group. Schlosser's counsel proceeded with this line of questioning for each of the 16 claims in the group. Pierce's mining expert testified that the tonnages of mineral on any individual claim could not be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit if only one individual claim was considered. However, if the claims in the group were operated jointly, all the mineral could be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit.

Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

In Peru, the third destination in worldwide exploration based on expenditure, mining conflicts have spread dramatically over the last decade. Mining companies need to create new initiatives to avoid social conflicts and strengthen the social capital needed to keep mining in a country with proven mineralogical riches. This document provides information about a research project that explored the opinions and experiences of a resource many times overlooked by companies: the human resource. Over 30 surveys were conducted among professionals working at mines in the Peruvian mining industry, in different departments and from different organizational levels. Mining employees acknowledged that they play an important role in the development of company-community relationships and gave their impressions about initiatives implemented by international mining companies in Peru. Mining employees also provided their recommendations to succeed in a location where cultural differences have not been properly considered.

A laboratory tower mill was used to investigate the effect of some variables on the power requirements of a plant mill. The grinding laws were tested for fine grinding and Charles' law and Rittinger's law found to be most closely satisfy the experimental data. The effects of ball size, ball charge mass and media type were investigated. The screw speed was altered to control the power input as required. The results indicate that changes in these variables will change the grinding kinetics but in terms of the grinding efficiency they have no effect on the size-energy relationship. The main factor in the specific energy efficiency is the transfer of the input energy to the charge by variation of the agitation mechanism. The efficiency of a tumbling ball mill and a pin stirred mill were tested for comparison.

Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. Introduction Responding to Congressional inquiries regarding the purchase of a number of major domestic mining and metals companies by foreign firms, the US Bureau of Mines examined trends in foreign direct investment in the US. mining and mineral processing industries1. "Foreign Direct Investment in the US Minerals Industry" analyzes the extent of foreign investment in several major mineral commodity industries. It identified the countries of origin of foreign investment in US mineral assets. The study also described several reasons for the growth of foreign investment in US minerals and discussed some potential implications of this activity. Foreign investment trends in the economy and minerals For the economy as a whole, between 1977 and 1985 the number of US affiliates of foreign investors more than doubled - from 4046 to 9824 - as did employment at these affiliates - from 1.2 million workers to 2.9 million (Table 1)2. During this same time period, the total value of assets of all US affiliates throughout the economy rose from $239 billion to $736 billion (1985 constant dollars). In the domestic minerals industry, foreign investment also grew substantially during that same time as the number of US minerals-related affiliates increased by 74% - from 125 to 217 - between 1977 and 19853. During the same period, employment at all foreign-owned affiliate mineral operations in this country increased by 78% and totaled 198,000 workers at the end of 1985. Parallelling the growth in the number of and employment at foreign-owned US mineral and metal operations, the total value of US mineral assets owned by foreign firms (or individuals) has nearly doubled since 1977 and amounted to $30.9 billion at the end of 1985. The rate of increase in foreign investment in US mineral assets was slightly higher in the metals industries than in the nonmetallic groups. Foreign investment more prevalent in minerals Perhaps a more useful way of evaluating the growth in foreign investment is to analyze growth in the "intensity" of foreign investment - the proportion of total US industry assets held by foreign investors. Although insufficient data on total industry assets prevented the development of such a measure, employment data provide an indication of relative differences in the intensity of foreign investment among the mineral industries and other industries. For example, as noted in Fig. 1, the 198,000 minerals industry workers employed at US-affiliate companies in 1985 represented 12.7% of total employment in this sector of the economy. In comparison, for the mining and manufacturing sectors of the economy as a whole, 7.8% of all workers were employed at US-affiliate firms in 1985. For the total economy, 2.7% of the entire civilian employed workforce worked at US-affiliate firms that year. Using employment as an indicator, foreign investment has been more prevalent in the minerals industry than in most other industries. About one worker in eight in the minerals sector was employed at a US-affiliate firm in 1985.
