"Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). Crystals of native gold occur in placer-type deposits. Gold, as a pure metal, is the most malleable metal known; therefore, delicate gold crystal forms should not survive mechanical transport and concentration processes involved in placer formation. To test the hypothesis that the crystalline gold is currently forming in place, two active gold-placer operations and an unmineralized background area in Alaska were examined. At these sites, rock outcrops, soil profiles, and native vegetation were sampled. At one sampling site, the soil was panned and yielded crystalline gold, as well as the more common rounded nuggets. The plants and soils were analyzed for their major, minor, and trace-element contents, especially gold. Two procedures, one a simple demineralized water leach and the other a partial digestion with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, were also used to extract gold and various anions from soils. The water-extractable gold ranged from <0.02 to 15.0 ppb Au in the extracting solution. This represents as much as a 104 enrichment in gold over average river water. This extractable gold is probably available to the native vegetation. Gold concentrations in the unashed dry plants from the two placer sites ranged between 0.4 and 106 ppb compared to a background range of <1 to <4 ppb Au. The presence of dissolved organic matter in the soils is thought to be responsible for the dissolution, transportation, and precipitation of gold in these placer soils, and this process is presently active in these soil profiles.

Most miners know that Latin America&apos;s major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world&apos;s geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. INTRODUCTION There are currently around fifteen companies in the United States and Europe manufacturing hard rock tunneling machines. In recent years upwards of 200 hard rock tunnels of lengths up to 12 miles and diameters to the order of 30 ft have and are being successfully driven by over 100 different machines. It has been predicted that within the next decade over 2,000 miles of tunnels will be driven for transportation purposes in the United States alone (OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling, Washington, 1970) and it is expected that eventually most tunnels including mine drivages will be excavated by machines. All tunneling machines have certain common basic functions; thrust is applied to drive or hold the rock cutting tools into the face, and torque is applied to rotate the cutting tools over the face so that they can continuously break out rock. The speed of head rotation, together with the torque requirement, determines the cutter head power. (The power required to push the head forward is usually negligible.) There are many factors which determine how successfully a given tunneling machine will perform in a given rock but one of the most important is effective utilization of cutter head power. This paper is a review of the specifications and performance of hard rock tunneling machines, obtained from manufacturers&apos; catalogs, published literature, talks with manufacturers and visits to operating machines throughout the United States and Europe.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930&apos;s through the "Zambianization" of the 1970&apos;s shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs&apos; conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. To assist in these tasks, a suggested rating system and case studies, respectively, follow a brief review of recent writings on the subject

Chile is at present the largest copper and rhenium producer and was before World War I the largest nitrate producer. She is also an important producer of lithium carbonate and molybdenum oxide. An important event in the history of the country is the Pacific War of 1879-1883 in which she acquired the northern provinces initially belonged to Bolivia and Peru. In 1888 Chile annexed Easter Island. The Chilean mineral and cultural history is briefly reviewed together with the people who contributed to her development. The present report is the result of a number of academic and industrial visits to Chile during the period 1992 to 2009.

Four native copper ores, two conglomerate and two amygdaloidal, were tested to determine their amenability to sorting. One of them, a conglomerate ore from the Kingston mine, showed a high sortability as evidenced by an 80 pct recovery of copper in the minus 6-, plus 1/2-inch size range. Using the Kingston as a case example, the cost of mining and concentrating was estimated for a standard case and five optional cases involving varying degrees of sorting. This analysis indi¬cates that the production cost per pound of copper can be reduced on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 cents per pound along with a significant decrease in capital investment.

Fwe 3 m (10 ft) diameter Microcel™ flotation columns were installed at Clinchfield Coal Company&apos;s Middle Fork preparation facility in order to reduce product ash and increase recovery and plant capacity. The Middle Fork facility is utilized for the recovery of fine coal from a feed stream that consists primarily of 1 .5 mm x 0 material. The columns replaced conventional flotation cells for the treatment of the minus 150 pm fraction while spirals are used to upgrade the plus 150 pm material in the plant feed. The addition of the column flotation circuit resulted in an increase in plant capacity in excess of 20 percent while reducing the flotation product ash content by approximately 7 percentage points. Flotation circuit combustible recovery was increased by 17 percentage points. This paper discusses circuit design, commissioning, and sparging system design. Circuit instrumentation, level control, reagent system control, performance comparisons with conventional flotation, and general operating procedures are also discussed.

Two major changes occured during the last 5 years in the applications of computers. First, the cost of computer equipment decreased drastically in an era of high inflation. Second, technological breakthroughs in hardware and software have been applied successfully so that the average person can successfully utilize the computer without having to be a computer expert himself. The mining industry has recognized that computing technology has evolved to a point where it can be applied successfully to assist in improving productivity. Since equipment downtime is one of the major reasons for lost production, the Kennecott Minerals Company has developed a comprehensive maintenance information system which now assists the maintenance department in minimizing equipment downtimes. This paper discusses the primary features and functions of this system, the state-of-the-art technology that has been applied, and the benefits that resulted from using this system. Programs to support mobile equipment maintenance scheduling, which currently are under development, are reviewed and a summary of future applications is given.

With all of the publicity, criticism, and notoriety that the mining industry has received over migratory birds, it is diffi­cult to remember that six years ago no one even suspected that this issue would'emerge. After all, cyanide had been used in Nevada mining for 20 years without significant effects on wildlife. Although the mining industry has been buried in unjustified criti.cism for not having a clearer crystal ball, most of those critics forget that no one else predicted this problem either. In fact, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reviewed and had no objections to the Paradise Peak Plan of Operations before they began production. As we now know, Paradise Peak had one of the first and most severe avian mortality prob­lems in the State. It should also be noted that Paradise Peak has done more to research and solve the migratory bird problem than all of the rest of the Nevada mines put together. It is not possible to review all of the research and field work that has gone into investigation of the avian mortality problem over the past five years in this short paper, but a synopsis can be presented. In most instances we can say that we have solved the problem, We have learned what works and what does not. Let's start with what does not work. Unfortunately, the list is long and elaborate, but can easily be summed up in one word: hazing.

This is the 10th annual tabulation of US mineral royalties published in MINING ENGINEERING. The first year, 1982, the author solicited information about royalties and the cost of reserves. That column contained only a few royalties - not enough to tabulate. Since then, the response has been sporadic but the entries have grown to more than 300. Some have been deleted. Some of the older information has been deleted to make room for new entries. All indications suggest that the readers enjoy and use the information. But more information is needed. Russian practice In 1989, this column gave a brief history of mineral leasing and royalty payments as the concept applies to mining in the United States. This year&apos;s narrative deals with information about the mineral ownership in Russia. That country is in political and economic turmoil, including administrative systems and methods. And many laws are likely to change. What follows describes the Russian system of mineral ownership as of early 1992, according to Kirill Kavun. He begins "All the subsurface space of the Russian Federation with minerals contained belongs exclusively to the state. This forms the Common State Mineral Fund. Land parcels may be state, municipal, public or private property. They may be let to be owned and used by individuals, juridical persons, national/territorial or administrative/ territorial formations." This seems to apply to surface rights, as known in the US.

This paper re-examines the mixing conditions in the collection zone of flotation columns. These have in the past been characterized with a single uniaxial dispersion coefficient, E. The relationship between E and column diameter, Dc, is examined based on residence time distributions (RTDs) in columns of Dc ranging from 5.lcm to 184cm. Results agree with published correlations in chemical engineering, i.e. E a Dc &apos;" , Data explain why pilot columns display significant upgrading between the feed level and the interface, whereas plant columns do not. It also suggests that, for plant columns, the full collection zone (up to the interface) can be considered when calculating the residence time. A mathematical model considering two regions of different mixing was compared to the single E model. Both models adequately fitted measured age distributions inside the column and overall RTDs. Measured and simulated mixing characteristics are compared to those of flotation banks, using a tanks-in-series approach; banks of comparable mixing to columns are identified.

The United States Department of the Interior&apos;s Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is responsible for regulating active coal mining and reclaiming abandoned coal mines in the United States. In working with the State government agencies that implement these programs, OSM is building a new approach that moves away from traditional "command and control" regulation and towards an approach that focuses on providing long-term environmental and economic sustainability on lands disturbed by coal mining. This initiative called "Reclaim the Future!" looks to enhance opportunities for economic development, wildlife preservation and enhancement, reforestation, and other beneficial and productive uses of lands disturbed by coal mining. The initiative is also focused on ensuring that the landowners and the local public have significant involvement in determining how best to reclaim mine sites and what post-mining land uses are most appropriate for each individual abandoned mine reclamation project or active mine reclamation. Through the use of the best scientific input in an open, participatory process, OSM hopes to further sustainable development principles for coal mining within the framework of existing United States law.

In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is less effective in recovering very fine (<15 μm) or very flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 μm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit, or when sulphide content is low. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm 3), especially from coarser gangue.

All gold occurrences in Tanzania are of Precambrian age and in geological settings similar to gold deposits in other parts the world. The three main areas of interest are perhaps the least prospected of areas of gold mineralization in Precambrian rocks in non- aligned, or market economy nations. Historic production exceeds 77.660 kg (2.5 million oz). Current results by small scale workers go unreported, but have been estimated to be as high as 11.000 kg (350.000 oz) annually. Gold occurs in both lower and upper Precambrian rocks. In the older. gold is associated with greenstones and iron formations typical of many cratonic areas of Precambrian age. The Tanzanian Craton lies in the north west quarter of the country where it is flanked on both east and west sides by mobile belts involving upper Precambrian rocks of high metamorphic grade. Gold occurs in fractures in the western belt within two distinct areas.

Working places in underground mines are formed by digging. The main feature of underground working places is that they are surrounded by rock. Digging through rock, which is main operation of mining, generates great reacting force. In many cases, supports are required to maintain a roof. Working places change their location with progress of mining operation. Therefore, for automate the work in such environment, a locomotive mechanism which can endure great reacting force, can support effectively the roof and floor, and has high moving performance in rough environment, might be required. In narrow underground environment which is surrounded by rock, it is possible to generate great fixing force by means of a jack which is set between the roof and floor or both side wall it is usual to apply a jack as anchor post for fixing machinery or reacting force. Self advancing supports widely used in long wall faces in coal mines could be said an example of locomotive mechanism with propping up fixing method. However it is difficult to say that ordinary self advancing supports have enough adaptability for various condition of the roof and floor. New locomotive method for underground working place &apos;Swing Phase Locomotion&apos; is proposed. It is achieved by mechanism based on frame type support and synchronous control of jacks. Furthermore, to achieved high adaptability to various conditions of the roof and floor, another walking mechanism has been developed. The mechanism employs propping up jack as its legs.

Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

Results are presented from a series of tests designed to determine the beneficial effects of the microorganism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans upon the leaching of uranium from a pyritic uranium ore. Minus 1-inch (-25mm) 0.0711 percent uranium containing, pyritic ore from the Rio Algom Mine at Elliott Lake, Canada was leached with lixiviants of various Eh and pH as well as being subjected to a biologically-assisted ferric iron leach. In all cases, the biological leach gave superior extraction. At pH 1.6, the biological leach gave 100.6 percent extraction and the ferric iron leach 69.8 percent. This improvement in extraction is associated with a relatively rapid biological breakdown of the pyritic material, thus liberating uranium mineralization associated with these pyritic materials and regenerating the ferric sulphate lixiviant in situ.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company&apos;s iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

Rendering a solid hydrophobic and solid-fluid particle* attachment in flotation are recognized as not necessarily related (1,2). The attachment is governed by forces of attraction and repulsion which need to be considered. The induction time required for attachment after solid and fluid particle are brought into proximity (3-8) illustrates the point. Laskowski(8) showed that a reduced induction time favoured flotation but detected no change in contact angle, a standard indication of solid surface hydrophobicity. Induction .time is observed in fluid-fluid particle coalescence, there being called a rest time (9-11) The induction time phenomenon is related to the presence of a metastable liquid film (disjoining film (2)) of the continuous phase (water in flotation) which must thin and rupture to permit attachment. The lifetime of this film, which is governed by the rate of thinning and the probability of rupture with thicknesss, depends on a complex interaction of forces. Investigating these forces should help clarify the attachment process. Practical benefits would be improved understanding of slimes flotation (12,13) This paper is concerned with the role of the mobile fluid particle-water interface on the film lifetime, in particular, the role of time-dependent or dynamic interfacial properties resulting from deformation of this interface.
