Short circuit detection in 1984 involved nine inspectors for production rates of 43,000 tpa. Trials indicated the feasibility of applying cell voltage monitoring to short circuit detection and improving operational efficiency. A computerised cell voltage monitoring system was commissioned in February 1986, to read voltages from 648 cells. The system incorporates 16 evenly distributed work face units which communicate with a central computer system. Provision has been made in the computer program for the automatic adjustment of cell reference voltages. This allows for the effect of polarization and other process variables which might other wise interfere with short circuit detection. The work face units can continue to work independently for several days should this become necssary. Current efficiencies have been maintained and the number of inspectors reduced from nine to five.

In modern warfare mica is truly indispensable. The coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. Scrap, ground, and the poorer qualities of block mica, which are less essential to the military program, are not considered in this paper. Furthermore, as the paper is designed primarily to assist mica miners, mica derivatives such as splittings and films are also excluded from discussion. The paper therefore relates solely to block mica of strategic quality.

In the summer of 2016 Xcel Energy experienced a storm event that resulted in the collapse of approximately 8.5 miles of a 345 KV transmission line near Rogers, Minnesota. In design of the new transmission line, Xcel Energy determined that ten tower locations would be replaced with steel H-frame structures supported by helical piles instead of wood H-frame structures supported by driven wooden piles. A steel foundation was proposed for the towers due to time constraints and site conditions unfavorable to large pile driving equipment. Xcel Energy contacted the helical pile manufacturer Hubbell Power Systems, Inc. (HPS) for aid in the design of a complete steel foundation for the structure legs. With the shear, moment, and axial loads provided, the manufacturer used pile group modeling and axial capacity software to design a four helical pile group; and used 3D modeling and finite element software to design a moment resistant grillage to connect to the tower base. The steel grillage utilizes a new moment resistant connection and clamp system to transfer loads from the piles to the grillage. This connection provides a true fixed head condition and reduces lateral deflection issues typical to smaller diameter piles in pinned head connections. The clamp is designed to deform the helical pipe pile shaft and transfer the full axial load of the structure through the mechanical and friction connection. The helical piles and the moment resistant grillage were manufactured with shorter than average lead times and a helical pile installation contractor performed the installation. An expedient plan of install was developed by the contractor that resulted in an average installation rate of one complete set of tower foundations per day. The design of the moment resistant grillage, clamping system, and excellent foundation construction by the contractor provided an expedient and efficient foundation system to be discussed in this paper.

Today underground infrastructures, like tunnels and especially wide spread underground mines, are often equipped with ethernet based communication systems. These networks are used for the unified communication of data, voice and video. As these networks stretch along the major tunnels and in increasing scale also into the production areas, a high degree of coverage can be reached. For wireless coverage, standard IEEE 802.11 WLAN access points are being used. In order to provide a maximum availability and reliability, the active components are equipped with battery backup power supplies and the network infrastructure is set up in a redundant way using ring or meshed topologies. This provides a much higher availability compared to traditional phone systems or dedicated data links using a conventional star topology.Distributed computing intelligence that is installed on active network nodes throughout the whole network, additionally supported by a central server system, creates the basis for new mine safety functions introduced in this paper for both coal and non-coal mining. These new safety functions cover the detection of potential emergencies, using the status of the network as a æsensorÆ, as well as dynamically guiding people to safe exits or rescue shelters in case of an emergency. Furthermore, these functions are of important benefit for improving the efficiency of search and rescue operations following a major incident or accident underground.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. WHEN the white pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries advanced from the coastal settlements of southern Africa into the interior of the subcontinent, they found it inhabited, more or less sparsely, by brown or black peoples mainly of pastoral habits but equipped with a fighting spirit and certain fighting weapons. Some of the tribes were smiths, others were miners and metallurgists; all used fuel, either industrially or domestically. Some of that fuel was wood, some cattle dung, and in some places the natives mined outcrop coal. Coal was first discovered by Europeans in Natal about 1840. After proper deliberation and after allowing due time for a consideration of all the implications, the Natal Government decided in 1881 (40 years after) to import an English expert to investigate and report on the discovery. Things then moved rapidly, and in what to a geologist is the remarkably short space of eight years, Natal collieries were producing at the rate of nearly 30,000 long tons per annum or 100 long tons per working day!

Kilembe is situated in the foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda. Precambrian stratiform copper de-posits are currently being mined at a rate of 90,000 tons per month. Complex ore structures and variable ground conditions have led to diverse mining methods in the past. New mining areas contain more shallow-dipping, highly contorted orebodies, in heavy ground. Cut-and-fill mining will be practised in the future. The geology, mining and milling are described.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

THE Brazeau river is a relatively short foothills stream in western Alberta and its drainage area is limited to approximately 2,400 square miles. It rises near the head of the North Saskatchewan river, about two-thirds of the way from Banff to Jasper, and is confluent with the North Saskatchewan at a point about 40 miles north of Rocky Mountain House. It is not the purpose of this paper to describe the geology of all of this area. Only the central portion, which lies east of the outer limestone ranges and takes in the outer folds of the foothills belt, will be dealt with. This area is shown on Figure 1. A small portion of the area described lies in the drainage basin of Pembina river, which flows into Athabaska river. The area to be discussed may conveniently be termed the 'Brazeau area', since Brazeau is the name of the river basin referred to above, of an out-lying limestone range, and of the only large settlement or community in the region, the mining town Brazeau. One of the first Factors of the fur trading post of Rocky Mountain House in the early years of the nineteenth century was Louis Brazeau. Coal mining during the past 25 years, and more recently exploratory drilling for oil, have brought the district into some prominence. The Brazeau area was visited by D. B. Dowling for the Geological Survey of Canada in 1906 and 1907 (1). His traverses and reports dealt mainly with the Kootenay coal deposits. It is doubtful if he traversed the outer foothills area with which the present paper deals. His reports on rich coal deposits in the Bighorn Basin area attracted commercial interests, and in 1908 large tracts were leased as coal lands. James McEvoy mapped and studied the coal seams in that year, and G. S. Malloch, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a complete survey of the whole of the Bighorn basin. His report (2), published by the Survey in 1911, describes the stratigraphical geology and names the formations. Further references to the geology of the district, mainly in relation to coal, are made by D. B. Dowling (3) and by J. S. Stewart ( 4). In the period between 1913 and 1920, the area was traversed by private interests in search of likely oil structures. A well was started in 1914 along the Saskatchewan river about 19 miles west of Rocky Mountain House, and drilling was undertaken by Imperial Oil, Limited, in 1921 at Coalspur.

ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. To address this problem, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is the roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that roof bolting machine operators would be exposed to, and it contributes significantly to the operators’ noise exposure. OMSHR has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. OMSHR and the Corry Rubber Corporation (CRC) have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and in turn reduces the noise exposure of roof bolter operators. This paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB.

One of the keys to success in process development is incremental scale-up, allowing for potential problems to be identified and rectified. The ISASMELT™top submerged lance (TSL) process was developed to maturity using this method by Mount Isa Mines, now owned by Glencore. Commercialization only occurred once the process had been proven on each scale and as a result the ISASMELT™ technology now operates successfully around the world. An important parameter in the evolution of the technology has been the furnace campaign life. The initial commercial scale furnaces had minimal water-cooling. Although this led to shorter campaign lives, an extended development program resulted in the achievement of four-year campaign lives, without any water cooling. In tandem to the refractory designs Glencore Technology, supplier of the TSL technology, has progressed cooled copper lining designs for application to both the ISASMELT™ and ISACONVERT™ furnaces allowing for ultimate flexibility in the lining choice. This allows each ISASMELT™ operating site to minimize their overall life-cycle costs by balancing their campaign life with lining costs, energy inputs, and other shutdown requirements.

There is no doubt, if any existed, that the commercial minerals world has now moved into a new era of unprecedented challenges in the sourcing, mining, processing, trade and use of industrial minerals. Industrial (nonmetallic) minerals remain the often unsung workhorse of mineral commodities and specialist raw materials that frankly keep the world’s manufacturing industries ticking over, and everyday products we use in sound availability. They are also very much present among the so-called “critical minerals” necessary to advance cutting-edge developments in growing high-tech markets such as in energy transition: for example, lithium, rare earths, graphite and fluorspar. Indeed, in the United States during 2024, industrial minerals again accounted for the majority share of total sourcing, and, yes, geopolitics. The last few years have witnessed a series of geopolitical issues that have impacted and continue to impact international trade in industrial minerals. Above all, it has been the threat and implementation of recent trade tariffs between countries that have been most damaging in creating a potential trade war. mine production by value at $72.1 billion, or 54 percent, followed by metals, 25 percent, and coal, 21 percent, according to the latest data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

Recruiting and retaining students in the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important each year. With no undergraduate degree in explosives engineering currently available in the United States, it is from other industries and degree disciplines we must recruit. The 2014 annual ISEE conference saw the first anonymous online survey distributed to members of SEE student chapters of the International Society of Explosives Engineers. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, expectations of salary and current academic degrees. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry, and their current path to pursue this. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers for graduating students. The success for both student response rates and interest from the industry has allowed space for a yearly update of this survey. A second survey was distributed in 2015 and included international students. This paper provides the data from a third online survey distributed to all student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, globally. Understanding the main incentives for a student to accept a graduate position as an explosives engineer can help us, as an industry; position ourselves to remain competitive in recruiting against other major degree disciplines.

The last detailed lint of permissible units was published as Technical Paper 4294/. All of the blasting units of that list have become obsolete or have boon modified as covered by extensions of the original approvals.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) presents considerable occupational health hazards in large-opening underground mines (LOUM). Previous studies have primarily focused on single-factor ventilation optimization, while this study innovatively integrates booster fan configurations and loading truck placements utilizing a coupled CFD turbulence– particle tracing model. Three distinct ventilation scenarios were simulated to evaluate their effects on DPM dispersion and dilution efficiency. Results indicate that dual booster fans substantially enhance airflow distribution, increasing air exchange efficiency; The migration pathways of DPM closely align with airflow trajectories, and air turbulence is the predominant factor influencing particle behavior within LOUM; Loading truck placement critically influences local DPM accumulation; Airflow effectiveness diminishes markedly with distance from booster fans, causing stagnation at distant working faces. The coupled CFD approach accurately captured airflow–particle interactions, offering valuable insights for optimizing mine ventilation strategies and effectively mitigating miners’ exposure to DPM.

"Engitec developed the EZINEX® Technology some years ago to recover zinc from oxidized secondary sources. This process works at neutral pH and can take into solution any kind of metal, but iron is rejected and remains in the leach residue. Engitec has also developed the FLUOBORATE System, which is able to recover lead and copper from relevant concentrates. Some iron is leached into solution, but it is controlled through a solution purification bleed treatment. In this paper, we present the two above mentioned technologies. They are very different with regards to the chemical environments and the methods used to control the build-up of iron in solution, but both systems are suitable to treat iron bearing feeds.INTRODUCTIONIn the design of hydrometallurgical processes, the most important issues are the water balance, the filtration and the control of impurities. This is particularly important when the process includes an electrowinning unit. Iron has been one of the most problematic elements to remove, especially in acidic environments.Engitec Technologies has developed several hydrometallurgical processes divided in two different electrolyte lines: the Fluoborate Technology for the recovery of lead and copper from primary and secondary sources and the Ammonium Chloride System based on a chloride electrolyte for the recovery of different non-ferrous metals, among which zinc and lead are the most important. In both cases, iron is present in the feed and needs to be eliminated from the solution. It is not a problem for the quality of the metal produced, but when present in solution, it consumes the basic electrolyte reducing its free concentration which is very important both for both the leaching and electrowinning unit operations. Both process systems are very peculiar, the fluoborate case being much more intriguing."
