A New Field for the Mining Industry A new field for the mining industry is in prospect. This is the recovery of the petroleum which has been left in the ground in the older oil fields whose yield has declined until they are no longer profitable to operate in the ordinary way. The fact that an oil field has reached the economic limit for operation by pumping does not necessarily 'mean that the oil has ? been exhausted. In many such cases not over one-fifth, or even one-tenth, of the total oil content of the field may have been taken out when this stage has been reached. This means that there exists a large reserve of oil which can be recovered by whatever process best takes advantage of the natural conditions under which the oil occurs. Mine drainage is one of the processes by which this oil may be recovered. Its relative importance will depend partly on the ingenuity and wide-awakeness of mining engineers, and on mining capital. The opportunity is undoubtedly at hand. In order that we may be in a position to judge the possible advantages of mining methods for the recovery of this oil, I have reviewed, on the following pages, the methods now in use, and have discussed the physical conditions of the reservoir rocks in which the oil is found, and the suitability of the various recovery processes, in use or proposed, in the light of these reservoir conditions.

Tyres account for 25-30 per cent of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines.Tyre operating costs can be substantially reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available.This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs.

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014. The Minister of Geology of the Soviet Union P.Ya. Antropov, recently visited China and claims that this country occupies one of the foremost places in the world in reserves of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, iron ore, coal, and phosphates. Occurrences of economic value of chromite, nickel, gold, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, and asbestos have also been reported. MINERAL RESOURCES Coal: The inferred reserves of coal are estimated at at 1,500 billion tons. A considerable part of the coal reserves is represented by coking coal, 80% of which is bituminous. Thicknesses of coal seams range up to 150 ft in the principal deposits located in northern and northeastern China. The total output of coal in 1958, 270 million tons, was produced by an army of 20 million people mainly in small mines operated by the agricultural communes. Surface and subsurface stabilization of mining-related wastes through revegetation depends upon the physical, chemical, and biological condition of the waste following mining. Mining disturbances can significantly alter the soil physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of a site, reducing or eliminating mycorrhizal fungi from the soil. Mycorrhizae are economically and ecologically important because they can alleviate environmental stresses caused by lack of proper soil condition and because they are vital to stabilization of mining waste by increasing plant survival and biomass through increased nutrient and water uptake. This report discusses some of the ecological factors that may affect mycorrhizae-plant associations on mining-related wastes and provides general information on mycorrhizae inoculation technology.

Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

In this Bureau of Mines study, an equation is derived for the limit burning velocity for divergent, spherical propagation from an ignition kernel of radius, r: (Su)e = ( ) . For flame propagation into a preexisting, stretching velocity gradient of magnitude dv/dx, the limit velocity is (Su)e = (a dv/dx)1/2. These formulations are shown to be equivalent to the fluid dynamic concepts of Damkoh1er, Kar10-vitz, and Markstein. Existing data for the b10woff limits of flames are shown to give excellent agreement with those concepts provided that proper account is taken of two dilution effects: composition dilution caused by entrainment and velocity gradient dilution caused by flow expansion. Approximate flow-field solutions are also derived for the unburned gas motion above an upward propagating, spherical flame kernel in buoyancy-induced flows. It is shown that;, the upward hemisphere propagates toward a stagnation plane in a counterflow configuration involving the balance between the combustion force, which accelerates the cold gas upward, and the buoyancy force that accelerates the cold gas downward. The position of the stagnation plane above the upward propagating hemisphere is related to the ratio of the buoyant velocity, vb, to the burning velocity, Suo Extinction of the upward propagating wave occurs by flame stretch in that counterflow configuration when n = Vb/Su begins to exceed the expansion ratio, Pu/Pb' and the wave is blown off by its own buoyancy-induced flow field.

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

He was promoted to First Lieutenant, but his commission did not reach him before his death. He was president of the Missouri Mining Association, Missouri School of Mines, for the year 1916-17.

In the fiscal years 1946 and 1947 the number of mine explosions decreased compared with the preceding years. However, the loss of life was so serious during the fiscal year 1947 the period when the Government administered bi- tuminous-coal and lignite mines that from April to June 1947 extraordinary measures were taken in mines then under Government possession to obtain com- pliance with provisions concerning rock dusting, ventilation, and blasting that had not been followed. The great loss of life in explosions during the fiscal year 1947 as compared with 1944, 1945, and 1946 is not easy to explain, but the necessity for maintaining adequate protection has been definitely demonstrated. Management, workers, and inspection agencies alike must keep the mines reasonably safe against explosions or allow them to lapse into a condition where chance is the principal protection against disaster. The at- tention given to protecting coal mines and the men employed in them against mine fires, following the disastrous fires in 1944 and 1945, has at least tem- porarily controlled this hazard loss of life from coal-mine fires was re- duced to 1 fatality in 1947. The number of fires was also less, and progress has been made in reducing the heavy losses in both life and property from un- derground coal-mine fires that occurred in the two years mentioned. Fatalities from mine explosions during the past 6 fiscal years, July 1942 to June 1947, totaled 674, and there were 149 explosions; during the preceding 6 years there were 655 fatalities in 132 explosions. The 6 fiscal years 1942- 47 cover the active period of Federal coal-mine inspection. During the fiscal year 1947, there were 154 fatalities from explosions compared with 58 during the fiscal year 1946, 64 in 1945, 94 in 1944, 152 in 1943, and 152 in 1942.

A simplified conceptual model shows how the arc flank to arc fringe areas adjacent to ignimbritic centres form a prospective zone for natural zeolites. Large alkaline lakes that serve as the repository of voluminous ash-fall tuffaceous material provide the ideal chemical setting for pervasive alteration of silicic glass to zeolites. The unusually old age of the Escott deposit demonstrates that any silicic volcanic province that contains low-temperature, unmetamorphosed sequences is a potential zeolite exploration target and that age should not be used as a criterion to exclude potential areas. It has also been demonstrated that heulandite and mordenite, formed by diagenetic alteration of silicic glass, do not always change to analcite and albite through the ageing process

One of the current challenges in mining is managing increasingly competent rock conditions within the mine-to-plant value chain, particularly when working with marginal ore grades. This study presents a case from a Peruvian open-pit operation where the mine plan projected a significant increase in rock hardness, as measured by the Axb index (parameters derived from the JK drop weight test). In response, the Drill and Blast Technical Team made efforts to increase the powder factor by reducing drill spacing and increasing the explosive charge, employing high-energy explosives (3,090 kJ/kg). However, this adjustment presented a challenge in achieving the fragmentation required to meet the target throughput of 97,500 tons/day, resulting in a shortfall of approximately 8.7% under the base case scenario. To overcome this technical challenge, the use of locally engineered ultra high-energy explosives was proposed, offering adjustable energy levels ranging from 3,210 to 3,570 kJ/kg. This solution enhanced ore blending strategies, calibrated to specific Axb ranges. The results also suggest that microfractures generated by the energetic blasting designs contributed significantly to downstream improvements. These outcomes demonstrate the value of a fully integrated mine-to-plant strategy, aligning blasting parameters with downstream processing performance to maximize operational efficiency. This solution led to a 10% increase in process plant efficiency, a 16% reduction in specific energy consumption during primary crushing, and a 13% reduction in the SAG mill. Additionally, shovel productivity rose by 18%, and the dig rate improved by up to 35%. "The extractive metallurgy of gold ores is largely driven by their grade and mineralogy. The concentration of gold in the crust is extremely low and highly variable, resulting ore variability in many gold and copper-gold deposits. More importantly, gold in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface gold), making gold ore processing extremely challenging. Geometallurgy is a technique to document variability within an orebody and quantify and evaluate the impact of many factors including geology and mineralogy on grinding, flotation, leaching and metal recovery processes. The objective of gold geometallurgy is to reduce and minimize the technical risk in project evaluation, plant design, mine planning and production forecasting through geometallurgical modelling, representative sampling and subsequent systematic mineralogical and metallurgical testwork. Gold deportment study is a powerful tool in characterization of various gold ores. Effective and quantitative gold deportment results are critical and useful for predicting gold recovery and building geometallurgical models of gold ores. This paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and applications in gold processing, with a focus being on the ore characterization and gold deportment study.INTRODUCTION Geometallurgy is an inter-disciplinary approach which links the geological, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics to the metallurgical performance of an orebody. Combined with mine planning, it has been used in scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, process design and optimization of gold, copper-gold, copper-moly, nickel and iron projects among others (Williams & Richardson, 2004; Dobby, Bennett, Bulled, & Kosick, 2004; Bulled, 2007; Bulled, Leriche, Blake, Thompson, & Wilkie, 2009; Kormos, Sliwinski, Oliveira, & Hill, 2013; Muinonen, Sciortino, Korczak, & St-Jean, 2013; Leichliter & Larson, 2013; Leichliter, Jahoda, & Montoya, 2013; Hatton & Hatfield, 2013; Baumgartner et al., 2011, 2013; Hoal, Woodhead, & Smith, 2013; Zhou, 2013). The goal of a gold or copper-gold geometallurgical program is to characterize and understand the metallurgical variability of an orebody, such as comminution, gravity, flotation and cyanidation parameters and metal recoveries, and to build a geomet model which can be used to assist in mine planning and to predict the plant performance. In any geometallurgical program, representative sampling is the key to ensure the results of a geometallurgical study will reflect future performance once the plant is commissioned. Geometallurgy compliments, but does not replace, the traditional mineralogical and metallurgical approach during the development and operation of a gold or copper-gold project. Geometallurgy is a methodology for testwork design and a framework for mine planning. The first part of this paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and application in gold ore processing."

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

Mining explosions designed to move, bulk or fracture rock are often composed of a number of explosions arranged in a complex spatial and temporal pattern. The effects of the explosions are strongly dependent upon the design and implementation of this blasting pattern. This paper describes the collection, combination and visual display of multiple types of data from these explosions for the purposes of understanding the relationships between the blast design, implementation, and observations. Data sets consist of three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three-dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions studied include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture rocks and those that cast material.
