The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. Free cyanide has been successfully determined in ground and surface water by isolation using a microdiffusion technique followed by a pyridine-barbituric acid photometric finish. The determinable free cyanide includes hydrocyanic acid, ionic cyanide, and the cyanide of weak complexes such as cadmium, lead, manganese, and zinc cyanide. Complexes of copper, iron, nickel, and silver are sufficiently strong so the dissociation into free cyanide does not occur at the microdiffusion pH 7. Cyanate, sulfide, and thiocyanate do not interfere. Samples containing as little as 0.005 mg/L are successfully analyzed. The relative standard deviation is <10%. Samples stored at pH >I2 in the dark are stable at least three weeks.

The social ecology of surface mining in urban areas is illustrated by a case study of a recent application for the opening of a new gravel pit in the city of Guelph, including the design of a progressive extraction-rehabilitation sequence for the property, investigation of the ecological impact of the proposed operation, history of the application procedure for a zoning change and the relationship of the operating plan to provincial legislation controlling surface mining.

Utilization of both slag and its heat for hot slag is a great challenge for iron and steel industry. Many methods of hot slag modification for directly converting hot slag into value-added materials were researched in recent years, and waste heat of hot slag could thereby be transformed into inner energy or chemical energy of the materials. In this paper, an experiment of converting hot slag directly into glass ceramics by hot slag modification method was conducted. A cooled modifiers mainly composed of fly ash were firstly heated though a cyclone furnace and then fell into a molten bath to mix with hot steel slag. Half of hot slag was used as raw materials and accordingly about half energy consumption, about 5MJ/kg for melting raw materials was saved in the process compared with that of traditional producing method. Frit quenched from the modified hot slag had a higher basicity of 0.6-0.7 than traditional frits in order to reduce the needed amount of cold modifiers and accordingly utilize more hot slag and its waste heat. Glass ceramics were further prepared from the frit and a heat treatment of one-stage method is more suiter to such frit than that of two-stage method. The glass-ceramics with basicity of 0.6 and heat-treated by one stage method had the best performance with bending strength of 146.46 MPa, Vickers hardness of 6.79 GPa, water absorption rate of below 2% and shrinkage rate of around 10%.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement process must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes in order to pursue better results over time. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators, such as P80 and fines percentage.

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall bits are responsible for breaking into and chip-ping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations have found that a large number of longwall bits are always working under various degrees of wear. Reduction of the bit wear could be realized by using better designed longwall bits and properly selected shearer operating parameters. A computer program has been developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters are the information required by the program. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

The recently opened Hera Au-Pb-Zn-Ag mine in central New South Wales has provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the calculation of sulfide ore mineralogy using normative methods. Normative mineralogy applies a set of sequential rules based on the species likely to be present to assign the chemical components of a sample to their respective mineral components. The dominant sulfide mineral assemblage present at Hera is galena, iron-bearing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. A normative technique for estimating the relative abundance of each of these species from drill hole, grade control and metallurgical assay data sets has been developed. This includes a process for deriving a gangue iron value and differentiating pyrrhotite from pyrite using sulfur/iron ratios. A calculated total sulfide volume value has been utilised at the mine to improve interpretation of lode boundaries. Normative drill hole values have also been used for domaining within the orebody, with large scale mineralogical trends evident. Dry bulk density (BD) values calculated using a normative species-weighted method show good correlation with measured BD values (R2 = 0.895) and are a significant improvement on the Pb+Zn+Cu regression method (R2 = 0.646) previously used. Application of these calculations to identify errors in assay databases is demonstrated, with specific reference to the data set for the nearby Nymagee copper deposit. Validation of block model grades is also explored and a method to improve resource estimates using direct normative mineral interpolation is proposed. The integration of the normative data into the production and metallurgical data sets at Hera is described and the relationship of the normative minerals to other economic elements such as gold and silver is discussed.CITATION:McKinnon, A R, 2017. A hydrometallurgical process is described for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates. The process is based on a cupric chloride leach, the concentrate having first been "activated" by heating it with sulphur at a temperature near 400°C. This activation process converts most of the iron of the chalcopyrite to pyrite, which is insoluble in the cupric chloride leachant. The copper is converted to the mineral idaite, which dissolves readily in hot cupric chloride: at 106°C, 98% of the copper is extracted in a three-stage countercurrent leach, the leaching tirqe being 1 hour per stage. The sulphur of the chalcopyrite appears as elemental sulphur, which is recycled for the activation of further concentrate, the final leach residue consisting of pyrite, plus the gangue present in the original concentrate. The copper extracted can be recovered by electrowinning, using a diaphragm cell. Current efficiency (one-electron basis) is about 70% but the cell voltage is only about 1 V, so that power consumption is three times lower than for the conventional sulphate electrowinning process. The leachant is simultaneously regenerated in the anode compartment. The behaviour of minor elements in the concentrate has also been studied.

he destruction of free cyanide on a Co3O4 doped carbon felt was studied. The experiments were done with an eiectrochemical filter press cell on dilute alkaline solutions containing 250 mg/l NaCN. No chloride ions were added to the solutions. The cobalt oxide protects the felt against corrosion and has a catalytic effect on the degradation of the cyanide. This kind of electrode allows working with current density as high as 1200 Aim without any visible degradation of the felt. The most interesting results were obtained with a current density of 400 Aim&apos; at which the cyanide concentration can be lowered to 5 mg/l with a current efficiency of more than 70 % and a specific energy consumption of about 10 kWh/ kg CN.

High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Cretaceous age. major camps that are described in detail in this Volume.

An account is given of investigations into the application of two neutron methods to the on-line analysis of slurries. One deals with the application of the neutron moisture gauge principle to the determination of the water content of iron oxide slurries, and the other with the application of gamma radiation from thermal-neutron-capture to the determination of the composition of aqueous slurries of iron oxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide and sulphur. Linear relationships were found between the composition of the slurry and the neutron count-rate in the first study, and between the slurry composition and the prompt-gamma-ray count-rate in the second study. A mathematical relationship has also been developed which relates changes in the prompt-gamma-ray counts from hydrogen to changes in slurry composition.

This is a Guide Specification designed to assist in the development of project specifications for soil nail excavation support and earth retention systems. This Model Specification is based on generally accepted industry standards but may require modification by the specification writer to accommodate unusual and/or unforeseen site and subsurface conditions and the particular circumstances of the project. Care must be taken to avoid internal inconsistencies. It contains language allowing for a Contractor-Designed Soil Nail Wall, which would be removed if the design is provided by the Owner (e.g. See Sections 1.2 and 4.1).

"ON NOVEMBER 15th, 1950, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys announced the discovery of vermiculite near Perth, Ontario. The announcement followed nearly a month of study to determine so far as possible the potentialities of the deposit and quality of the material from surface indications. The mineral was identified by the writer in the field among samples submitted by Mr. Arthur Powers of Stanleyville or, September 22nd, 1950. Within a week of the announcement, mining rights to properties covering a major portion of the deposit had been acquired by commercial interests.Hitherto, Canada has had to import her entire requirements of vermiculite. Prospects of .a domestic supply gave promise of considerable benefit to many industries, particularly the building industry, and to the consumer public. Should the deposit •prove large enough there was also the possibility of exporting to centres in the United States.Field and laboratory studies were continued at the Mines Branch during the winter of 1950-51 as opportunity occurred. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of these •preliminary investigations, to attempt to present the Stanleyville occurrence in its proper perspective with regard to similar occurrences elsewhere, and to review the salient features of the vermiculite industry.Properties and UsesVermiculite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. In appearance it resembles mica, having the same micaceous cleavage, but it differs from that mineral in being very soft, pliable, and inelastic. Colours range from black through dark olive-green and brown to almost colourless."

A computer model has been generated to evaluate speech intelligibility of individuals wearing conventional and electronic hearing protectors. For speakers talking at normal levels in noise levels of 65 db(Lp) or less, it was found that conventional hearing protectors significantly reduced speech intelligibility. Under the same conditions, electronic protectors provided scores equal to those for the unprotected individuals while providing protection from high noise levels. Therefore, electronic hearing protection is valuable in areas where high noise level is intermittent.

The meeting of the Institute at St. Louis brought together many members of the Women&apos;s Auxiliary, and Mrs. Philip N. Moore, who was nominated as the Director for the St. Louis Section, took the occasion formally to inaugurate the organization in that district. A meeting was held at the Planters Hotel, anti after discussion as to, the aims and objects of the. Auxiliary, officers were nominated for the&apos; Section; the meeting then adjourned for two days, to he resumed in Joplin.. Here a very successful meeting was held, at which the Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer were elected. A great deal of interest was arouse under the able directorship of Mrs. Moore the St. Louis Section is likely to become a large and active organization. The president of the Women&apos;s Auxiliary, in opening the meetings, told the ladies present of the inauguration of-the-Society in February, 1917, and of the work which had been accomplished up to date. She told how the Society devotes itself to patriotic and humanitarian work along lines acceptable and interesting to the Mining Engineer, standing always alongside and behind the men of the profession. The Central Welfare Committee of the organization has three Sub-Committees: Foreign Relief, Emergency, and Americanization, and under one or other of those heads most of the work of the&apos; Society has been done. Mr. Hoover was responsible for the inception of the Foreign Relief Committee, as its first work was the collection of funds for the supplementary meals for the Belgian Children. Under the energetic administration of Mrs. H. Knox, this sub-committee raised $12,100 in the period between the February meeting and the Declaration of war by the United States, when our government took over the entire duty of feeding starving Belgium. The organization of the Belgian Relief Committee, as it was styled, still remains, but the members are now asked to take up the question of relief in France. The President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings suggested at the St. Louis meetings that one way of working for the foreign relief alight be that all the members of the Auxiliary should, during the period of the war, forego all giving&apos; and receiving of Christmas presents, except those they have been accustomed to give to the poor or in charity, and those they would give to the men in the services of the United States; that the money usually spent on the Christmas gifts should be put into a fund to be sent abroad for the fatherless children of France, as a gift from the families of the Institute. A good deal of discussion followed this proposal, as some of the ladies felt that children should have their Christmas gifts as usual. The basic mining law of Netherland India is contained in N. I. Statute 1899 , No. 214 , as amended by N. I. Statute 1910 , No. 588 , and 1919 , No. 4 , which is quoted as the " Indian Mining Law, " the effective date of which was fixed as May 8 , 1907 , by proclamation dated October 12 , 1906. The Indian Mining Law was supplemented by Ordinance No. 38 , of 1930 , which was passed by the Volksraad on March 18 , 1930 , to become effective on October 1 , 1930 ( superseding an earlier ordinance entitled " Government Gazette , " 1906 , No. 434) . An important law with respect to American petroleum rights , Statute No. 23 , passed February 9 , 1928 , approving contracts between the Indian Government and the Netherland subsidiary of a large American oil company , is in the nature of a private law or of an enabling act ( see section of this paper entitled " Rights of Foreigners" ) . Statute 1930 , No. 348 , effective October 1 , 1930 , sets forth in minute detail conditions under which prospecting and mining permits may be granted. Statute 1930 , No. 341 , effective October 1 , 1930 , embodies the police regulations of the mining industry.

The most energy-intensive process in the mining industry is particle size reduction – comminution. The first phase of this process is blasting to fragment the rock from the initial Boussinesq’s halfspace size. Scientific literature demonstrates that the output of a blast in terms of fragment size distribution can be manipulated by varying the specific charge (powder factor) and charge distribution. This study focuses on the influence of blasting on the internal resistance of the blasted fragments; in particular the influence of the spatial distribution of charges. Small-scale blasts were performed on 14 marble blocks using different powder factors and charge distributions. Three control blocks were fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. The results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution. Opportunities for adjusting charge diameter and distribution in opencast blasts to improve the performancet of comminution circuits are discussed.
