A program of investigation of strategic and critical minerals began in 1940 to examine and develop tungsten occurrences in the western United States and Alaska. During the years in which the nation was at war, this work was given special impetus to stimulate domestic production. This report is a compilation of results of the tungsten investigations in Alaska supplemented by certain data made available by the Territorial Department of Mines and is designed to include in its scope descriptions of all known tungsten occurrences in the Territory. Two areas in Alaska warranted special investigation - one at Gilmore Dome, 16 miles northeast of Fairbanks, and the other in the Hyder District, at the head of Portland Canal. Three tungsten properties - the Stepovich, Colbert, and Yellow Pup - are at Gilmore Dome. The Stepovich property, referred to sometimes as the Cleary Hill tungsten deposit, was worked by the Cleary Hill Mines Co. from April 1942 until May 1944 and was first examined by Robert S. Sanford and Norman Ebbley, Jr., engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942. The Cleary Hill Mines Co. by that time had explored an 800-foot strike length of the ore zone with 10 bulldozer trenches and was sinking an inclined shaft on ore in the central portion of the explored zone. In January 1943, the senior author, in company with Ebbley and Harry C. Doheny, supervising engineer of R.F.C., examined the property. Preliminary work by the Bureau of Mines began in May 1945, but actual exploration did not commence until late in June and continued until the end of October 1943. The deposit was examined by John B. Mortie, Jr., and William C. Overstreet, of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1942, and this study was continued in 1943 by Frank Byors, who also assisted the Bureau’s engineers on geologic problems. A magnetometer survey of this area was undertaken in 1942 by Henry Joosting and Eskil Anderson, engineers of the Territorial Department of Mines, and was completed with Bureau of Mines assistance in 1943. During 1943 the Bureau completed exploratory projects on the Cleary Hill mine and adjacent Colbert prospect. The field work on the Colbert property was begun early in July 1945 and continued intermittently until the end of October 1943, when it was recessed because of subzero weather. During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines established (by means of a few surface trenches) continuity between the Colbert mineralized zone, high on the dome, and the Yellow Pup vein, the lowest known tungsten mineralization in the area. It is generally recognized that any extensive program to develop the area as a whole logically would be carried out from the lower horizon.

UNTIL a few years ago, geological mapping, the study of ore boulders, and different geophysical methods were the principal means used in the systematic search for mineral deposits covered by a layer of disintegration products or soil. These methods have been developed to a high stage of perfection as far as the geometrical definition of the conductor is considered. Use of geophysical methods in prospecting is based on the fact that an ore body differs from the country rock not only geologically but also in its physical properties. The general drawbacks and complications included in the use of geophysical methods are well known to everyone who has been using them, so need not be entered into here in detail. One of the more important ones is the fact that geophysical methods are unable to furnish information concerning the chemical composition of the ore bodies responsible for the indications. Further, the ores of many metals, such as silver, gold, beryllium, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, vanadium, antimony, chromium. molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and the platinum metals cannot be directly located by known geophysical methods, owing to lack of physical characteristics suitable for distinguishing them from the country rock. Thus it is quite natural that efforts have been made to develop direct methods for prospecting and locating ore bodies of the elements named. Known as chemical, biogeo-chemical, and geobotanical methods of prospecting, these have been much improved during recent years. A brief review of these methods and of some results obtained with them will be presented in the following, on the basis of available information and my own experience.

There is no doubt that the dominant future source of gold will be the so-called refractory ores, especially those with gold in a pyrite/arsenopyrite matrix. Minproc Engineers is taking an active role in establishing detailed design criteria for a number of apparently competing processes. This involves generating a detailed understanding of the metallurgy involved, systematic pilot plant testing, and the application of advanced engineering technologies. This presentation outlines the approach adopted by Minproc as well as the design criteria for several current projects.

China is the largest coal-producing country in the world, while the geological conditions of deep coal mining are extremely complicated with high ground stress, high gas pressure and low permeability, which results in the difficulty of gas drainage and aggravation of gas explosion and coal and gas outburst disasters. Co-extraction of coal and gas is an effective method to eliminate coalmine gas disasters and realise the safe exploitation of coal and efficient gas drainage at the same time. This concept is widely accepted by the main coal-producing countries around the world, while the concrete definition of co-extraction is vague and not unified, and there is little accurate theoretical support for co-extraction of coal and gas, which makes it hard to determine efficient gas drainage methods correspondingly according to the features of coal seams in a comprehensive and systematic way. Based on theoretical analysis, laboratory test and field observations, basic thoughts and specific definition of co-extraction of coal and gas were put forward after analysing the occurrence characteristics of coal seams in China. We obtained the mechanism of mining-enhanced permeability and established the corresponding theoretical model, which is the process of fracture network formation through opening recovery of the original fractures and new fractures produced by unloading damage. Based on the core idea of ‘mining-enhanced permeability’, engineering approaches of ‘unloading by boreholes drilling’ for the single coal seam and ‘unloading by protective seam mining’ for the coal seam group were proposed to realise safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas. Meanwhile, combined with engineering practice, we put forward the construction principle of coal exploitation and gas drainage system in different coal seam occurrence conditions. The above methods were applied successfully in the Tunlan coalmine in Shanxi Province and the Panyi coalmine in Anhui Province, which had established the ‘underground-surface united’ spatial gas drainage modes, and could ensure safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas in the outburst coalmines.CITATION:Cheng, Y-P, Wang, L, Liu, H-Y, Kong, S-L, Yang, Q-L, Zhu, J-T and Tu, Q-Y, 2015. In the traditional chlorination roasting-water leaching-solvent extraction process for the extraction of rubidium-bearing ore, Rb leaching from the ore and calcium removing from the leachate are conducted separately, and this results in the complicated process and high energy consumption. In order to integrate the Rb leaching and calcium removing processes, Rb-bearing polymetallic ore was firstly treated by chlorination roasting, it was then leached in a micro-reactor with raffinate, and the calcium ions in the leachate were removed in the reactor as carbonate precipitates by passing CO2 at certain pressure into the reactor. The effects of raffinate alkalinity, CO2 pressure, and CO2 reaction time on Rb leaching rate and calcium removing rate were investigated. The experimental results show that when Rb-bearing polymetallic ore was leached for 90 min by stirring with raffinate with 1.125-mol/L alkalinity, and the pulp was made to react with CO2 at 0.8 MPa for 15 min, the Rb leaching rate and calcium removing rate amounted to 92% and 98.2%, respectively. This integrated process including Rb leaching from Rb-bearing polymetallic ore and calcium removing from leachate could simplify the process for the extraction of Rb-bearing ore and increase its economic benefits.

Com a perspectiva do uso de aços API em ambientes sour service, o controle de inclusões e precipitados é essencial para bom desempenho. A precipitação de carbonetos e nitretos de Nb e Ti, assim como a formação do MnS foram analisados criticamente em aços de alta resistência e baixa liga – HSLA- com Mn entre 0,3 e 1,6%, Nb 0,02-0,1%, S 0,001-0,005% e Ti 0-0,02% em peso. Os valores da temperatura de precipitação do MnS, Nb(C,N) e Ti(C,N) foram obtidos por meio do software ThermoCalc™. A partir desses resultados, possíveis tendências da precipitação foram discutidas e relacionadas com a temperatura de não-recristalização, traçando um comparativo entre temperaturas de processo e precipitação. Três aços produzidos com a composição estudada atenderam os requisitos mecânicos de tração da norma API 5L X65M.

The following abstract of the minutes of the final Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, held Nov. 12, 1912, in the office of the Institute, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, is here presented for the information of the membership at large. On the announcement by the Secretary that there was a quorum present, President James F. Kemp called the meeting to order. The minutes of the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912, were read and approved. (Sec p. xi,Bulletin No. 71, November). Prof. Jos. W. Richards, in behalf of the Special Committee of the Board of Directors and the Council (Messrs. Richards, Kirchhoff, and Rand), withdrew the two proposed amendments to the Constitution offered by the said Committee at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912. (See Bulletin. No. 70, October, 1912, p. vi., and Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, p. 15.) Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws prepared by the Special Committee. Several members present discussed various sections of the proposed Constitution, and the Committee advised that the suggestions would he duly considered before submitting the final document, which would be duly presented and sent to the membership at large at least 30 days before the next Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. Professor Richards presented a resolution, seconded by Mr. Kirchhoff, making a change in the present Certificate of Incorporation, so that it would conform to the proposed changes in the Constitution and By-Laws; said resolution was unanimously adopted. Professor Richards presented another amendment to the Constitution, which had been purposely omitted from the printed list, but had been requested by many members, namely, the creation of a " Class of Fellows." This question was freely discussed at the Cleveland meeting (see Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, p. 1348), and in view of the diversity of opinion it was-decided to present it in separate form for separate action of the membership at large at the Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. In answer to question, the President announced that the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws presented by Messrs. Corning and Stone at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, Oct. 7, 1912, and published in Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, were still on record. Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the By-Laws, and several sections were discused by members present, but no action of record was taken. Mr. Charles F. Rand read a letter from Mr. L. K. Armstrong, Sec-retary of the Spokane Local Section of the Institute, referring to the proposed amendments to the Constitution, and he announced that many of Mr. Armstrong's suggestions were, in one form or another, already incorporated in the proposed amendments submitted by the Special Committee. A special vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Albert R. Ledoux for the valuable assistance rendered by him to the Special Committee in the preparation of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws.

P UBLZCLTY and engineers do not mix. In the very words of my subject, there is an apparent contradiction. In the past, publicity has been abhorrent to the engineer. It seems to be true that the engineer, because of his training or his background, has developed a state of mind which omits publicity. At any rate he has done a poor publicity job for himself. The average engineer is self-conscious; he ought to be class-conscious. If T should ask the men in this hall to get up one by one and tell who they are and what they have done, there would be an instinctive reaction in the mind of each man-a feeling that this was out of place. If I should ask each man to get up and tell something about his neighbor, I should find that each neighbor, once he got acquainted with the man next to him and understood what he was doing, would be as human and as generous-hearted in telling about his brother engineer as is any professional man.

Between 1986 and 1989, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U. S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center studied the highly-mineralized, 25,335-acre, Crack Canyon Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-028A), to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The 16-mi-long, 2-mi to 4-mi-wide stud/ area is on the southeast side of the San Rafael Swell, about 40 mi southwest of Green River, Emery County, southeast-central Utah. The study area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary beds. Uranium, the principle mineral resource, occurs in two formations. The principle uranium deposits are in mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate lenses in the 22-mi-long outcrop of the Triassic Chinle Formation which parallels and straddles the northwest boundary of the study area, Some small low-grade uranium occurrences and an extensive gypsum deposit are hosted by the Jurassic-age rocks that underlie the southeast part of the study area.

[This paper sets forth the burning characteristics of coke used as a domestic fuel as shown by work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and others. Coke is a truly smokeless solid fuel and is held in high regard for this quality. Ways are being found for making commercial coke from a wider range of cools than heretofore, and tale use of coke for domestic heating is increasing. Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. "IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

"This year’s DFI Outstanding Project Award is for the design and construction of the foundation scheme for the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In 1993, Gefyra, SA (a French/Greek consortium led by VINCI of Paris, France) was awarded a €750 million ($1billion+ USD) Concession Contract to design, build, fi nance, operate and maintain a three-span cable-stayed suspension bridge connecting the Peloponnese, Greece’s southernmost peninsula, with the mainland across the Gulf of Corinth. The contract extends over a 42-year period, 7 years for design and construction and 35 years for operation. The project was fi nanced through a combination of public funds, private equity and bank loans. Alternative foundation concepts that were considered included traditional driven piles, deeply embedded caissons and soil improvement. PROJECT CHALLENGESThe extreme technical challenges faced included:??Weak foundation soils composed of soft alluvial deposits consisting of interbedded layers of granular and cohesive materials with thin layers and lenses of gravel and liquefi able sand pockets; rock is believed to be at a depth of 1,000 m (3,500 ft) or more.??A very deep seabed exceeding 60 m (200 ft).??The requirement to withstand the collision of 180,000-ton tankers traveling at 16 knots.??Maximum wind forces of 250 km/hour (155 mi/hour).??Design seismic forces corresponding to Richter magnitudes of 7.0+ with peak ground accelerations of 0.48 g at seabed.??Design tectonic movements of 2 m (7 ft) in any direction between any two adjacent bridge pier foundations/pylons.Considering subsurface conditions and local seismicity and water depths, foundation design and construction methods were the key drivers for this project. In large part, the success of the project is owed to the unprecedented partnering and collaboration between all partners involved fostered under the leadership of Jean Paul Teyssandier and Gilles De Maublanc of VINCI Group (France) who served as lead Concessionaire and General Contractor. The joint venture’s lead Greek partners were Elliniki Technodomiki/AKTOR and J&P/AVAX. Alain Pecker of Geodynamique et Structure (France) served as lead Geotechnical Consultant/ Designer while Buckland and Taylor (Canada) served as Design Checkers with Ralph Peck and Ricardo Dobry (U.S.) as Special Advisors on foundation issues, Langan International/Langan Engineering and Environmental Services P.C. (George E. Leventis, Gregory Biesiadecki and Diane Fiorelli) served as Technical Advisor on geotechnical, geodynamic and foundation/marine construction issues."

As is readily apparent, the reliability of the early-stage costs estimated for any mining project are critical to the viability of that project. An estimate too high might leave a potentially profitable deposit undeveloped or worse yet, available to a competitor. One too low might waste investment dollars in a project not yet economically ripe. There are two aspects critical to any estimate: 1. The cost data used to represent the values of the wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment. 2. The design used to determine the engineering parameters upon which the above estimated values are based. Given that all of the information contained in Mining Cost Service is provided by suppliers, equipment manufacturers and mine operators, one wonders why there is any question as to the reliability of cost estimates developed using this information. Given that it is all actual (as opposed to statistically derived) data, where do the problems with estimate reliability lie and what is the impact of the data on that reliability? The following presents a series of analyses designed to assess the reliability of the cost estimating process. Both the actual cost data and the engineering parameters upon which they are based are examined in an attempt to quantify and understand the importance of each. While several sources of cost information are available (Means, Richardson, Primedia?s Equipment Watch, and individual suppliers and manufacturers), the following rely solely on data contained in InfoMine USA, Inc?s, Mining Cost Service and in its Sherpa Mine Cost Estimating Software.

Metal species in solid and liquid materials can be extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide containing a suitable ligand. This in situ chelation-supercritical fluid extraction technique offers, several advantages over conventional solvent extraction including minimization of organic liquid waste generation and exposure of personnel to organic vapors. One unique feature of this technique is that metal species can be removed from solid materials directly using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. Several ligand systems including dithiocarbamates, ß-diketones, organophosphorus reagents, and macrocyclic compounds have been tested for metal extraction in supercritical carbon dioxide. This novel extraction technique may have important applications for metal recovery and mineral processing.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

"The uninterrupted operation of a ventilation system is critical to ensure the mine meets its scheduled production and, as important, is vital to the health and safety of all personnel working underground. Those operating the mine ventilation system must have fundamental engineering training in the art of fluid dynamics and have a good comprehension and control of the mine ventilation network. Ventilation management by untrained and inexperienced personnel may result in serious consequences when the system becomes ineffective. This paper shares observations and experiences pertinent to the occurrence of upset conditions as a result of the improper design and operation of mine ventilation systems. A series of real life case studies are presented to describe disruptions to mine ventilation systems and the gradual deterioration of system operational efficiencies leading to eventual failure. Special focus is given to mistakes made and on the resulting serious consequences. The case studies also demonstrate how each upset condition was resolved, permitting the mines to safely resume production activities.INTRODUCTIONThe ventilation of operating mines is a continuously changing and evolving system; upset conditions will occasionally occur, but should be promptly resolved in order for the system to function properly, according to design, and in compliance.Those designing, managing or operating the mine ventilation system must have pertinent training and have a good understanding of fundamental ventilation concepts to be able to devise and implement engineering solutions to day-to-day challenges. Realistically, the operator must also have extensive practical experience and be able to effectively apply operating procedures, design criteria and ‘best practices’. They must be able to, on a daily basis, evaluate the mine ventilation system, determine and locate any problems, understand the causes of each problem, find a solution, and promptly and efficiently correct those problems.Ten case studies are presented to demonstrate how fundamental design or operational mistakes can lead to adverse conditions or to catastrophic consequences, how detailed on-site engineering assessments can be employed and how simple, low cost, engineering solutions can be implemented to successfully resolve the issues and return the ventilation system to compliance, permitting the mines to safely resume production activities."

"INTRODUCTION The wartime demand for iron ore and alloy steel on the west coast revived interest in iron reserves in western United States and Alaska. Magnetite was known to have been the most abundant metallic mineral at some of the old copper mines on Prince of Wales Island. In the summer of 1942, the Bureau of Mines began a program of preliminary investigation followed by core-drilling two magnetite deposits on the island.The Poor Man iron deposit on Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska, was examined in August 1942 by Robert L. Thorne, associate mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, and John C. Reed and B. N. Goddard, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey in September 1942 the area was mapped geologically and a magnetic survey was made by the Geological Survey. In October and November 1942, a more thorough preliminary examination, which included cleaning out and sampling old adits and trenches, was made by thesenior author, Robert L. Thorne, and Aner W. Erickson, engineers of the Bureau. J. G. Shepherd, a consultant of the Bureau, spent two weeks in March and April 1943 investigating the Poor Man and other deposits on Kasaan Peninsula. Core drilling was completed in June 1943.L. A. Warner, of the Geological Survey, examined all cores and interpreted structural data revealed by the drilling."
