Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

The Bureau of Mines is concerned with extracting minerals from residual geothermal brines after their heat content and some demineralized water have been recovered. This literature study is based on a survey of the literature and discussions with individuals knowledgeable on various aspects of the subject. This report examines the potential of the domestic geothermal mineral resources, considers the technical problems involved, and outlines possible effects on the environment from reservoir fluid withdrawal and reinjection. Geothermal resources in the Western United States were extensively explored during the 1960's. Limited development operations included exploratory drilling and operating wells producing hot brine, separating steam for experimental electric power generation, and recovering minerals in solar evaporation ponds or in extraction plants. Interest in the recovery of minerals and salts from geothermal fluids waned because of corrosion and scaling problems and low or no market value of the mineral products. Most of these problems can be controlled with existing technology and careful planning of processes and equipment. Extracting geothermal minerals is technically feasible, but the problems of low or no market value for major mineral products, and insufficient amounts of more valuably major products, make mineral recovery uneconomical at present.

From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

"Online elemental analysis is the basis of optimal flotation control in mineral concentrator plants. Traditionally XRF analyzers have been used as the online analysis method. However, online XRF analyzers struggle to measure elements below calcium in atomic number (Z=20). For many processes lighter element assays would be beneficial to improve control of grade and recovery. Processes where elements below Ca are required include P, Mg and Si in phosphate concentrators, Si, Mg and Al in iron concentrators, and S and C in gold concentrators. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) based elemental analysis can readily be applied to these processes. LIBS is based on generating plasma in the slurry sample by a high energy laser and analysis of the plasma by optical emission spectroscopy. Capabilities of a new Courier® 8 analyzer based in LIBS technology are demonstrated for elemental analysis starting from lithium (Z=3). Results of a plant installation in a sulfide gold concentrator provide a good agreement with the analyzer and laboratory assays.IntroductionEffective process control can be regarded as one of the fastest paying investments for a mineral processing plant. Process optimization in flotation circuits requires constant feedback of the process state. If only manual laboratory samples are available, this optimization becomes difficult due to the long delay between taking the sample and acquiring the laboratory result. If the element grades are available in online basis, the operator or automatic process control system can make corrective actions in real time.Online X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzers have been in use at concentrators for decades. The XRF analyzers can provide a fast, accurate and precise analysis from slurry streams. However, the drawback of XRF analyzers is their lack of capability to measure elements below Ca (Z=20) in atomic number. The low energy X-rays of the low atomic number elements get absorbed by water in the sample, protective window of the analyzer, or air between the sample and spectrometer."

CORRECTLY speaking, iron ore is limited to any naturally occurring rock from which iron may be extracted at a profit, but in practice the term is frequently used to indicate borderline material or inaccessible material that may in the future become commercially profitable. This distinction is much more than quibbling about terminology. When a layman hears that there are about 45 billion tons of iron ore in the world he naturally thinks that sounds like quite a bit of rock, and what is the use of worrying about the depletion of so plentiful a material. He does not realize, nor does he stop to analyze. why iron ore in Europe and Japan may carry no more than 30 per cent iron while tremendous quantities of 50-60 per cent iron ore in Brazil are not exploited. To people in the iron industry the answer is obvious: the Brazilian material is inaccessible, and there is no suitable fuel near-by. In places closer to home, submarginal ore in considerable quantity contains undesired impurities, such as sulphur, phosphorus, or titanium.

Block or panel caving technology is far removed from that of the top slicing and block caving of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The rapid mechanisation and expansion of these methods in the late twentieth century was as much a result of the change of the technology of the unit operations of development, ground support, drilling and blasting and transport as it was of the advances in geotechnical understanding and practice. The small footprint gravity and scraper block caving mines with boundary weakening, rail transport and shaft hoisting of the early to mid-twentieth century have been replaced by massive high lift panel caves using preconditioning of the ore, large load-haul-dump units, adjacent crushers and conveyors to surface. The technology changes in the unit operations are described and the drivers for these changes examined.CITATION:Weston, A J, 2016. The paper describes the advanced grinding control system implemented at Newmont Ahafo gold mine, Ghana in 2009 and 2010. It shows how the different components of the Advanced Process Control (APC) system cooperate for increasing plant performance. The SABC circuit processes hard rock from different pits mixed with a variable proportion of oxides. The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness. The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock? rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill? system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase. The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsator-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig.5/ Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this type of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

"The paper provides the principle considerations for a novel vehicle class within the scope of the project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). The main idea for these ships is to create a highly modular building block system for the global layout. This building block system allows for a mission-dependent module assembly. For the purpose of deep sea mining for example, the range of tasks reaches from multipurpose transportation and exploration missions to supporting tasks in up to 5000 m depth, e.g. energy supply. Topics covered in this paper are related to potential missions for these vehicles, the modular layout and the structural layout of a separate block module. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the leading economic nations, Germany is in need of energy and raw materials. In the 21st century, marine resources are a prominent and promising alternative to land based resources. However, there are challenges that need to be considered. Rough and often poorly plannable weather conditions prevail distant to the marginal seas. Ice coverage makes offshore services inefficient and costly in Polar Regions. The average ocean depth of 3500m and the associated environment conditions cause difficulties in fulfilling tasks in the deep sea. The project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) [1] will enable more efficient solutions in order to accomplish undersea duties and services in harsh conditions.This joint project comprises workshares from Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the University of Rostock and the Technische Universität Berlin. The principle idea of the project is the conception of a novel vehicle class. With highly modular autonomous underwater vehicles, this class will be capable of undertaking a variety of different tasks. Classically engineered vehicle structures will be split into single basis modules which can be flexibly assembled with specialized mission modules to form potent systems for individual assignments. The group of basis modules consists of units for navigation, vehicle control, propulsion and energy generation via fuel cell technology. The potential reusability of system relevant modules leads to a significant cost reduction and to shortened development periods compared with conventional vehicle concepts. The integration of newly designed additional mission modules is possible with little effort and a separate commercialization of single modules is feasible."

ALTHOUGH Cerro de Pasco was well known since the early sixteen hundreds as one of the major silver districts of the Andes, its development on a modern scale did not occur until the first decade of the present century when a syndicate organized by James B. Haggin initiated the enterprise that eventually grew into the complex and widespread operations of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation. Options on a few claims in Cerro de Pasco that had been brought to New York in 1900 came to the attention of A. W. McCune, a mining man from Salt Lake City, who took them to Haggin and soon succeeded in interesting that creative mining financier in the possibilities of the district. James MacFarlane, an engineer well known to both Haggin and McCune, was sent to Peru early in 1901 to make the initial examinations which promptly led to acquisition of a substantial group of claims in the heart of the mineralized area. A syndicate to which Haggin turned over his rights was organized on Feb. 26, 1902 to provide the necessary funds. The original members were J. B. Haggin, who retained a 34 per cent interest, Edward H. Clark (for Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the widow of Haggin's old associate, George Hearst), H. McK. Twombly, H. C. Frick, D. O. Mills, and J.P. Morgan.

Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. This paper discusses the potential role of underground space and tunnelling in urban planning in Australia. The paper gives examples of the infrastructure and commercial applications of underground space which have been effectively used overseas but have been slow to be considered as a part of urban planning in Australia. In particular, the paper looks at underground quarrying and underground commercial development and their potential use in the urban environment. Existing sites and potential sites for quarrying and/or commercial use have been classified using a system developed by the author. Underground quarrying may provide some solutions for planning problems involving sand and aggregate supplies, waste disposal and other uses. Commercial development involving underground excavation may be accepted if the cost of underground commercial development can be shown to be equivalent to the cost of above ground development. The paper concludes that one role of the underground construction industry is to promote tunnelling and underground space amongst architects, town planners and planning decision-makers. The Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association (AUCTA) and the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) should be instrumental in actively promoting the use of underground space in society.

The basic study from which this paper was prepared was started as the result of the growing need throughout the world for increasing quantities of energy in all forms. Quite obviously, natural forms of energy that are readily available at low development cost are those in greatest demand. The underdeveloped countries — and particularly those having little or no petroleum resources — are the countries in which the most interest is being shown in the newer energy sources. One of the least expensive energy sources is natural geothermal steam.'-* Although this form of energy has been recognized for centuries, it has been only during the past 20 years that serious efforts have been made to harness it. Natural geothermal steam energy in Italy, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, and California is now being produced through wells to drive turbines and generate electricity. Further, active exploration for natural geothermal steam is being conducted in Hawaii, Fiji, Taiwan, Chile, Russia, Greece, and Katanga. It is surprising to find that most geothermal steam exploration is in the "steam seep" stage. That is, surface studies are made and exploratory wells are drilled in the general area of steam seeps. However, in the larger geothermal steam areas, there have been efforts to apply the most modern geological and reservoir engineering principles in order to define the reservoir parameters, particularly those relating to estimates of reserves and future productivity. This paper is concerned with the development of appropriate equations and techniques to facilitate these estimates. Production of natural steam or hot water presents problems different from those experienced in the production of oil and gas. For example, steam or hot water systems may be essentially single-component systems, while hydrocarbon systems are most frequently multicomponent fluid systems. Heat effects are much larger for water than for hydrocarbon systems; and the natural steam production may or may not be isothermal, while production of petroleum reservoirs is considered normally to be isothermal. Petroleum reservoir engineering principles may be applied to natural steam or hot water reservoirs if the inherent differences in the systems are considered. The basic considerations involved in geothermal steam reservoir engineering are: thermodynamics, physical and thermal properties of water, materials and energy balances, fluid influx, and performance matching and predicting. Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. The zinc deposits of the Balmat-Edwards Division of the St. Joseph Lead Company in northern New York State provide some 10 per cent of the domestic zinc produced annually within the United States. These complex ore deposits are contained within marbles of the Precambrian Grenville series, in a repetitive sequence of dolomites and silicated units. The Balmat ore bodies are localized at various intervals throughout some 1800 feet of the stratigraphic column on the northwest side of a band of gneiss that has continuity to the Edwards area, some 10 miles to the northeast. The Edwards ore bodies are located to the southeast of this gneiss. The marble formations are thought to have included repetitive intervals of marine sedimentation that provided mineralized source "beds" and were subsequently folded, flooded, and injected with melts at great depth and were sheared, recrystallized, and reconstituted. Detailed structural and stratigraphic studies throughout the northwestern Adirondacks, in the Balmat-Edwards district, and at each mine in particular indicate the close dependence of the ore deposits on the enveloping structure whether it be local, district-wide, or regional in scope. Primary folding has developed a northeast regional trend with northwest dips. Secondary folding has been developed by an almost horizontal northeast-southwest-oriented shear couple in the plane of the regional trend. The secondary folding has produced crossfolds that intersect the regional northeast trend and plunge north to northwest at various angles. The ore bodies are found within certain stratigraphic horizons where repeated alternation of competent and incompetent beds encouraged unusually complex folding. Analysis of individual mine structures indicates that the location of each deposit is controlled by structural crossing of primary and secondary folding. The ore bodies, which are tabular, lenticular, or pod-like in form, have features that suggest parallelism to true bedding or modified flow banding, developed by northeast-southwest shearing stresses related to the development of the crossfolds. The ore deposits in general follow both structural and recrystallization trends within the wall rocks. Mobilization of the pre-metamorphic ore minerals is believed to have involved a combination of plastic flow under stress and solution of the sphalerite, minor galena, and pyrite. The ore fluids are thought to have been guided by secondary shearing and microbrecciation into structurally prepared areas where reprecipitation took place. The presumed premetamorphic mineralization now exhibits epigenetic high-temperature features related to late-stage metamorphism.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past twenty-five (25) years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated by the Glen-Gery Corporation which is located in eastern Pennsylvania; the National Lime and Stone Company which is located at Carey Ohio; and Holston Defense Corporation which is located at Kingsport, Tennessee. There are, however, numerous operating gasifiers in other parts of the world. Recent events indicate that this situation is changing. The quantity of domestic natural gas available to the interstate market has been declining at the same time that demand for all forms of energy has been increasing. The current potential market for gas with a heating value ranging from 100 to 500 Btu per cubic feet has been estimated at sixteen (16) quads (16 x 1015 Btu) per year. This is expected to grow to twenty (20) quads by the year 2000.
