Many firms in the minerals industry are facing enormous capital-equipment requirements for existing operations, planned expansion programs, pollution control systems, etc. Yet, because of existing economic conditions, mining companies find it increasingly difficult to obtain reasonable financing for the acquisition of large, high-cost capital equipment. One way of obtaining the use of mining and other major pieces of high-cost capital equipment is through leasing. The popularity of this approach is evidenced by the growing number of leasing companies, equipment manufacturers, and financial institutions now offering this service to their customers. Indeed, leasing has become a billion-dollar industry, and many commercial banks have developed sizeable portfolios in this area. "Should we buy or lease?" This question eventually comes up whenever a mining company needs additional major capital assets. Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

THE 123d meeting of the Institute was held in New York Feb. 14 to 17, 1921. The total registration was 1199, as compared with 1138 at the New York meeting in 1920. The weather was a strange and welcome contrast to that of last year, when New York was buried under six feet of snow as the result of the fiercest blizzard in its history. This year there was no snow, and the weather was said to be much more like an Arizona winter than New York. A complete program of the Technical Sessions is on p. 9. The discussions of the papers presented will be published in pamphlet form as soon as possible and will be noted in MINING AND METALLURGY in the usual way.

HEAT Treatment at 1500' F of a mild steel containing 0.1 pct C, in an atmosphere which is oxidizing to both carbon and iron, results in the progressive oxidation of the metal surface with little or no change in the carbon content of the underlying metal. Further heat treatment of the scaled metal in either a neutral atmosphere or in a vacuum may or may not result in the decarburization of the metal depending upon the physical nature of the scale. It is apparent that if a continuous layer of oxide is present on the steel surface, the reaction OScale + Cmetal Cogas cannot progress since the SO formed gas would be unable to leave the oxide/metal interface. Thus, in order for the reaction to progress, the oxide must be cracked or porous. Vacuum heat treatment at 1500" F of samples with a thick continuous oxide scale showed no decarburization of the steel. However, when cracks were introduced mechanically into the scale prior to the vacuum heat treatment notable decarburization of the metal resulted and a structure as shown by Fig. 1 obtained, i.e., reduction of the crack walls to ferrite. With reference to the diagram of Fig. 2, it would appear that a mechanism of the following type takes place. Carbon atoms arriving at an oxide/metal/void interface, such as 'A', Fig. 2(a), can combine with oxygen atoms from the scale and leave the reaction site as Cogas thereby reducing the oxide to metal. On a greatly magnified scale, Fig. 2(b),this will appear as a ferrite projection along the crack wall. Carbon atoms entering this projection can react with oxygen atoms at point 'C', which is a new interface, and so on leading to a progressive growth of the ferrite along the crack wall and to the surface, Figs. 2 (c) and 1. It would appear that the only means by which thickening of the ferrite film can take place is by a diffusion of oxygen through the ferrite film to react with carbon at the newly formed ferrite/ void interface. Since the diffusion rate of carbon is reportedly much greater than that of oxygen, and since there is a low probability factor of oxygen and carbon atoms arriving simultaneously at the same site on the ferritehoid interface, there will be a tendency for more rapid lengthening than thickening of the ferrite layer, as is observed.

WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.

Secondary Twinning. - When there is reason to believe that the twinning has been produced subsequently to the original formation of the crystal, or crystalline mass, as, for example, by pressure, it is said to be secondary. Thus the calcite grains of a crystalline limestone often show such secondary twinning lamella?. The same are occasionally observed (Ilc, 001) in pyroxene crystals. Further, the polysynthetic twinning of the triclinic feldspars is often secondary in origin. This subject is further discussed on a later page, where it is also explained that in certain cases twinning may be produced artificially in a crystal individual - e.g., in calcite (see Art. 282).

To keep it straight, we would probably employ the largest square drill stem compatible with the diameter of the hole. Ron Haxby: Is it common in drilling contracts to put in a vertical hole clause? Ferris Sainsbury: You can put in the vertical hole clause Ron Haxby: Does it cost more? Ferris Sainsbury: Normally, if the hole deviates, the driller can correct it with deflection wedges and will charge it back to you at cost, plus 10% or somewhere along that range Any drill hole has a tendency to go perpendicular to the dip, and there are times when stabilization systems are not successful in preventing the hole from turning into the dip of the formation. PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

T HE theory of hardening by heat treatment was, as usual, the most actively discussed phase of metal working theory and in spite of the fact that it is now ten years since the dispersion theory was proposed by Messrs. Merica, Waltenberg, and Scott, it still retains a dominating influence. It is being increasingly recognized. however, that in its simplest form, that is, the purely mechanical effect of very fine crystallites distributed through a groundmass, it is distinctly in- adequate. To explain the observed facts we are obliged to assume some well-defined intermediate stage between supercooled solid solution and conglomerate, however fine be the particles of the latter. This intermediate has been inferred by Gaylor and Preston to be "the rejection of the atoms of the dissolved metal from the lattice of the solid solution accompanied by the possible formation of molecules."' Perhaps this may well be designated as the formation of supersaturated solid solution. Some very definite evidence of such an inter- mediate stage has been found in the hardening of steel where it appears that the very hard martensite may be considered as a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron. The X-ray spectrometry of drastically quenched steel shows a tetragonal lattice whose parameter changes by tempering at 100" until it coincides with the cubic lattice of iron.? The same gradual change of the tetragonal to the cubic lattice has been observed by Sekito when esamining layers on increasing depth below the surface of a quenched carbon steel.

The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do no6 think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. Speaking and writing are similar mental acts, with a difference: the difference between eating food raw and eating it cooked. INTRODUCTION - DEFINITION & HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE While this symposium is concerned with comminution which, by definition, relates to all stages of size reduction of an ore body to a form suitable for mineral separation, the electrical drive aspect of the grinding section will receive most attention in contrast to the crushing, screening and materials handling elements of the process. The reason for this is that today's large mills, thirty feet diameter and upwards, present mechanical and electrical problems which require a degree of sophistication in their solution not previously required. The ability to satisfy these demands, so far as electrical technology is concerned, largely results from the development of semi-conductor devices. These can now handle typical electrical distribution power levels within remarkably s m all volumes and with high efficiency when compared with the motor-generator sets, mercury arc rectifiers, rotating amplifiers, magnetic amplifiers and vacuum tubes which were commonly used to provide speed and torque controls as recently as the early nineteen-sixties. The hardware available to the electrical engineer has changed dramatically whereby even the simplest control system formerly using hard-wired relays is now superseded by the program m able logic controller with its computer-like memory containing the sequence of operation, in other words, the software. Reverting now to the mineral process itself, it is assumed that the ore body has been mined using explosives and is delivered to the concentrating plant in its 'run of mine' form. The problem becomes one of reducing the material to a size which will permit an acceptable recovery of the mineral with the most economical use of energy. The size of 'run of mine' material will range from about minus five feet for high tonnage open pit operations to minus two feet for the smaller underground mine. The final reduction in size may range from minus ten mesh to minus two hundred mesh (exceptionally as fine as minus six hundred mesh) depending upon the concentration method and dissemination of the mineral values within the ore. There is no single circuit that satisfies all applications, but the pattern of metallurgical equipment use shown in Table 1 appears discernable from current practice, in general terms.

The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. The term (?EVA/VA)1/2 was regarded as a measure of the binding energy of the component A and was called the L&apos;solubility parameter" 8A. On this basis immiscibility occurs when 1/2(VA+VB)(bA-bBf > 2RT [2] Apparently, however, there were several inconsistencies in that according to Eq. [2] several systems known to be miscible in the liquid state were predicted as immiscible. MOTT&apos;S ANALYSIS ~ott&apos;" regards that the reason for the inconsistencies arising out of Hildebrand&apos;s equation was largely due to the electrochemical attraction between the two elements, not being considered. Hence, Eqs. [I] and [2] were modified by taking into account the electro-negativities of the two elements XA and XB, and Mott arrived at an equation for immiscibility, i(VA + VB)(6A - aB)2 - 23,Q60n(XA - XBf > 2RT [3j which can be written as i **&£*&* >&apos;*°™- &apos;• HI T being the melting point of the more refractory component of the system. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,&apos; and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure.
