The Mt Lyell copper mine in western Tasmania has discharged acid drainage (AD) into the Queen and King Rivers and Macquarie Harbour for over a century. Presently, dissolved copper loads of about 1000 tonnes per annum and dissolved aluminium loads of >2000 tonnes per annum are contained in the AD, which is derived from underground workings (~60 per cent) and historic waste rock dumps (~40 per cent). Flows vary from about 100 L/s during dry periods, to >400 L/s during the wet winter. The site is presently operated by Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) who are not responsible for the acid drainage generated from the mine site. Although western Tasmania is famous for its mining history, tourism and aquaculture have emerged as the new industries on the West Coast, with a major tourism railway (the Abt) recently opened along the banks of the Queen and King Rivers. The emergence of these industries in a æclean greenÆ Tasmania has resulted in a strong community and government push to remediate the acid drainage. Remediation investigations and efforts at Mt Lyell were initiated by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (DPIWE), previously known as DELM, in 1995, and have included the quantification of environmental impacts arising from the AD, and the investigation and costing of potential remediation options. A primary focus of the work has been to identify cost-neutral options which recover metals from the AD in a saleable form to help defray on going treatment costs. This paper summarises these activities in generally a chronological order, highlighting findings of the program that are potentially applicable to other acid drainage sites.

INAP was formed in 1998 by a number of major mining companies, with a view to sharing acid rock drainage knowledge and experience, and to coordinate global research on the management of sulfidic mine wastes. INAP is now moving to further strengthen its global role by networking with regional organisations that are active in the area of ARD, including MEND 3/NEDEM 3 in Canada, the ADTI in the USA and ACMER in Australia. The INAP-Regional Organisation partnership will be formally launched at the 6th ICARD.

Although AustraliaÆs coal mining industry is currently experiencing a pleasing period of price relief, long-term trends toward lower real prices will surely continue. Higher price levels attract expansion by existing operators and market entrance by new operators. History clearly demonstrates the relentless long-term march toward ever lower real prices. Therefore, the need for economic returns applies constant pressure to improve productivity. To be sustained, high productivity requires a systematic response based on a solid understanding of critical productivity determinants. The most powerful determinant of productivity is now widely understood to be workplace culture. Culture largely comprises a combination of behaviours, symbols and attitudes. This paper will examine and review scienceÆs latest discoveries in human behaviour. It will provide a proven, practical framework for understanding behaviour and applying this knowledge. Significantly, it will highlight why conventional approaches toward improving productivity often provide disappointing economic returns. The modern understanding of behaviour factors will cover coal face operations. More importantly, because executive and managerial levels in coal mining have significantly greater impact on industry and mine productivity the paper will concentrate on leadership. Particular emphasis will be placed on use of modern systems and in particular use of what are by far the most powerful drivers of behaviours û measurement, analysis and reporting systems. The paper and presentation will show how conventional systems rooted in antiquated American legislation from the early 1900s stifle productivity improvement and drive suboptimal and even counterproductive behaviours. These commonly used systems will be compared with accurate and effective modern methods for assessing performance to improve productivity. These principles are proven in all industries and effective application in mining will be highlighted. Actual results will be used to demonstrate practical approaches successfully applied in both metal and coal mining in Australia and overseas.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. The Cadia mine has shifted from an open pit operation to the Cadia East underground panel cave. The resulting increase in milled tonnes, more competent ore and the decrease in fines production through shifting to panel caving were predicted to require an increase of over 25 per cent in installed power. This expansion was accomplished via the installation of secondary and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing of the ore, with the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill receiving a combination of primary, secondary and HPGR crushed feed. This design, criteria and rationale for selection was presented at the SAG Conference 2011. Reliable evaluation of in situ stress is an important phase in the analysis and design of underground excavations, particularly for evaluating the stability of underground structures to prevent failure or collapse. A technique for the estimation of the full stress tensor based on acoustic emission (the Kaiser effect) is being developed and trialed at the WA School of Mines. The result obtained compare well with the standard over-coring method. The advantages of the technique are that it is relatively cheap, non-time consuming and is applicable to in situ stress measurements at depth in remote regions.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. Owing to the deterioration of iron ore, the Al2O3 concentration in iron ore increases, and thus it is important to investigate the effect of increment in Al2O3 concentration on the microstructures of iron ore sinters. During the sintering process, a melt is present in the sinter for only a few minutes, and therefore the microstructure of the sinter doesn’t reach thermodynamic equilibrium. Nevertheless, the formation process of the microstructures can be interpreted and predicted to some extent from the equilibrium phase diagram. This study investigated the liquidus isotherm in the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3- 5 mass% Al2O3 system at 1240°C in air and the phase equilibria of silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (denoted by SFCA) and SFCA-I by XRD (X-ray diffraction analysis) and electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA). The following results were obtained: 1. The ferrite melt region with a high Fe2O3 concentration shifts to the lower Fe2O3 side than the liquidus isotherm in the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 system. 2. The compositional region of SFCA extends in the CaOꞏ3Fe2O3-4CaOꞏ3SiO2 direction than the silico-ferrite of calcium (denoted by SFC) composition region with a 0 mass% Al2O3. 3. SFCA-I is observed in the present system, which suggests that the increment in the Al2O3 concentration contributes to the stability of SFCA-I. These results imply that an increment in Al2O3 concentration in iron ore leads to a decrement in the volume fraction of the bonding phase and that the fraction of the SFCA phase increases, and those of 2CaOꞏSiO2 and slag phases decrease in the bonging phase. The SFCA-I phase is also precipitated from the slag with an Al2O3 concentration around 5 mass%.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. In this paper, the Australian thick coal seam underground mining potential is highlighted and the characteristics are investigated by analysing a thick seam database. It is clear that thick coal seam resources should be mined with a high recovery, productive, efficient as well as a safe and reliable mining method. Longwall Top-Coal Caving (LTCC) is the most recent thick coal seam mining method which has been developed and extensively used in China for the last ten years. The successful applications indicate that this method has a very high recovery and productivity rate and less development cost in comparison with any other thick coal seam mining method. One of the aims of the current study is to seek potential for the application of LTCC as a thick seam mining method in Australia. In this paper, preliminary results of investigation on Australian thickseam potential are given and results of data analysis for potential LTCC seams in Australia are described. The outcome of this study shows a great promise for the application of LTCC in Australian coal industry.

The mining licence for the Macraes gold mine places emphasis on the progressive rehabilitation of the land to a state compatible with the landscape and environment that existed prior to mining activities taking place. The shallow soils and hostility of the environment dictate that choices of plant species should focus on persistence rather than high productivity, choices that are made easier by observing the vegetation patterns that have developed naturally within the area, by recontouring landforms to integrate with the surrounding countryside and the use of appropriate plants and establishment techniques.
