A corrosion-resistant lining is, quite often, selected on the merits of its corrosion resistance only. This paper demonstrates the effects of temperature, pressure, weather, design aspects and variances of physical properties within the scope of the generic designation of a corrosion-resistant material or materials. The base for the study is a rubber- and brick-lined steel vessel, with unchanged chemical conditions. Graphs and sketches illustrate the various effects of physical influences on the selected lining specifications.

"The purpose of this paper is to describe the types of instrumentation used at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Mine to monitor the"" effects of mining. The aim of the monitoring program is to establish parameters to achieve a maximum ore recovery with minimum dilut ion in a safe environment.The copper-zinc Ruttan Mine is in northwestern Manitoba, approximately 760 km from Winnipeg (Fig . I) . Production commenced in 1973 from the open pit at the rate of 10,000 tons per day. Pit bottom lies 58 metres above the first mine level. Underground development has overlapped with open-pit mining throughout. The open pit was phased out in the latter part of 1980.Underground production began in early 1979. The mining method employed in the first lift is sub-level blasthole open stoping with delayed hydraulic filling. Large-diameter (6.5-in.) holes are being drilled in the crop stope area and are also planned for some other areas for vertical retreat mining into a slot. GeologyThe orebody consists of numerous sulphide lenses of variable size, geometry and geology . The lenses occur within volcanoclastic host rocks which exhibit a strong variability in intensity and type of alteration and structural characteristics. Stope design and sequencing were based on these complex geological factors."

"The concept of employing a project management team to coordinate all aspects of the construction of a new resource development has gained wide acceptance. This team can be formed from within the staff of large mining companies or contracted from major engineering firms and consultants. The mandate of the project managers usually terminates on successful startup of the operation. For frontier mineral developments in the Canadian Arctic or in the developing countries, startup and the initial year of operation represents the period in which the project is most vulnerable to technical, political and managerial problems. A complete change of the management team or the retention of the construction project managers and the resulting cost combined with the breakdown of organizational accountability within the operating staff .are unnecessary management problems.Independent project management services provide the commitment necessary to sustain the continuity of management through all project phases. Efficiency and the ability to make decisions quickly are characteristics of the many successful small mining companies. These qualities are necessary in the project management group, which will be responsible for up to 90% of the preproduction costs.Continuous project management in the construction and operational phases of a mineral development are common in the iron ore industry, but remain anomalous in the base metal, energy mineral and industrial mineral fields.The Nanisivik project on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic is used to illustrate the advantages of total project management through construction and operation.Total project management has further potential for foreign interests and financial and utility organizations desirous of participating in the Canadian mining industry, but with no direct involvement in the construction or operating management. Participation agreements in the operating phase of a project can be negotiated to have management fees related to both the production and the profits of the enterprise."

"Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining operates a uranium mine at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The project consists of one open pit and one underground mining operation along with a full-scale milling installation.The underground stoping operations are of the narrow vein type and are done between two levels 50 m apart. The mining method is undercut with concrete backfilling. Cuts are 3.5 m in height and can be as narrow as 1.4 m in width.Stoping operations are mechanized utilizing a CT-500E electric Microscoop marketed in Canada by Teledyne. The machine is only 85 cm in width and does all the mucking in stopes. Ore passes are provided in stope roughly every 40 m to 50 m.This paper describes the utilization of the CT-500E Microscoop in the company's underground operations and provides performance data related to the experience.IntroductionThe Amok Ltd ./Cluff Mining operation is located in the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan. The project started in 1980 with open pit mining and milling operations. In 1983, an underground mining operation began production . Today, the Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining installation produces 800 tonnes of uranium per year , which originates from both the open pit and the underground mine at about the same proportion."

This paper describes the latest results in research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. This research delivers enabling technologies that are essential in achieving increased roadway development rates as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. Details are presented on technical developments and results of large-scale above-ground experiments conducted under field-realistic conditions. These experiments demonstrate the performance of the ?self-steering? capability which will enable a continuous miner (CM) to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the CM in real-time. Test results of a high performance navigation system utilising vehicle motion aiding technologies are presented. This system combines high performance inertial sensors, and custom-developed radar to achieve a navigation-grade guidance system. Comprehensive performance evaluation has been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform operating autonomously through a typical roadway development mining pattern with a total path length of 2700 m and mission duration of 112 min. Results from this evaluation demonstrate that the sustained accuracy of the navigation system exceeds the original project expectations and is well suited to the requirements for this underground mining application. There are presently no known alternative methods for providing a practical and accurate three-dimensional guidance solution in this application. This achievement represents a significant milestone in delivering a step change improvement in underground coal mining roadway development.

As a result of the dramatic growth of Edmonton, Alberta during the past decade and the rapidly increasing price of natural gas, Edmonton Power has received provincial government approval to construct and operate an 8O0-megawatt- capacity coal-fired thermal generating station at Genesee, about 50 km southwest of Edmonton. The power plant will consist of two 400-megawatt steam-driven thermal generators, with provision in the future for two or more additional units. The coal will be hauled by truck from the nearby three-million-tonnes- per-year strip mine, with economically recoverable reserves exceeding two hundred million tonnes. Edmonton Power controls a major part of the coal leases in the area, and is working with other lease holders in developing the most efficient mining plan. A natural depression was selected as the site for the 600-hectare cooling pond to provide water for the power plant. Edmonton Power is working closely with the people in the area to ensure that their rights and concerns are communicated and recognized by all parties.

The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world's vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. On the other extreme, high-speed steels made via the powder metallurgy route show superior performance with vanadium additions as high as 6 or 8 percent. Vanadium is used as a cost-effective alloying addition in steels for high-temperature service, fully alloyed heat-treatable steels, new dual-phase steels for automotive components, rail steels, etc., to mention only a few applications. Vanadium is also an established essential addition for titanium alloys. The morphology of environmentally assisted cracks in stressed pipeline steel has been investigated, For a dilute and neutral solution (NS4) simulating ground water in contact with the steel, semi-elliptical cracks grow faster on the surface (2c) than in the depth (a), hence, the aspect ratio (a/c) decreases, This is explained using a deterministic concept since corrosion is dominant and the primary constraint is the conservation of charge, By contrast, when mechanistic conditions prevail, significant growth occurs in the depth, When underloads are imposed in the loading history, temporary accelerations in crack growth occur because corrosion rather than mechanical effects become dominant.

"The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has recently initiated several incentive programs to encourage and facilitate the development of new mines in northwestern Ontario. Some are privatized out to consultants and contractors. The status of three of these programs will be reviewed in this paper.IntroductionOne of the main objectives of the Mineral Resources Group of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources is to encourage and assist mineral exploration and the development of new mines in the Province. Programs to accomplish this objective are largely carried out through two Branches in the main office (in Toronto), the Mineral Resources Branch and the Ontario Geological Survey, and also a number of regional field offices scattered across Ontario.The function of the Mineral Resources Branch is to identify and administer effective policies that will ensure maximum benefits to the Province from mineral resource extraction.One of the most important factors in ensuring effective exploration in the Province is the availability of a good geosciences data base from which to work. It is the responsibility of the Ontario Geological Survey to develop and continually update this data base, providing, to both the public and private sector, an inventory and analysis of the geology and mineral deposits of the Province.The main functions of the regional field offices are to provide technical data and advice to exploration companies and prospectors, to encourage and assist exploration, and to provide information and general assistance to producing and developing properties to facilitate resource development and extraction. This is accomplished through the offices of the mineral resource coordinators and resident geologists. In northwestern Ontario, these field offices are located at Thunder Bay, Kenora, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.To accomplish their objectives, the Ontario Geological Survey and the regional field offices carry out regular, ongoing geoscience and other mineral resource programs, under their base funding."

Numerous schemes have been proposed in the past to evaluate the shear strength of rock discontinuities based on in situ and laboratory testing. Due to scale effects, in situ testing is the most reliable way to assess the shear strength parameters. However, practical reasons often impede this kind of testing. This is unfortunate because advances in theoretical rock mechanics are still dependant on qualitative experimental works. This paper presents a mobile high capacity shear apparatus developed for in situ direct shear testing of discontinuities along with testing methodology. The apparatus has the advantage of being simple, although of high capacity, and can be moved to different site locations for other tests. The in situ test was performed on a natural rock outcrop of schist with subvertical schistosity. A concrete block 50 x 50 cm with a base layer of high strength mortar was cast on the rock surface. Prior to the test, the concrete block was lifted and repositioned to have an unbonded joint but with interlocking asperities. The shear load was applied perpendicularly to the schistosity direction. The test was conducted in a constant normal load (CNL) condition. Both normal and shear loads were applied manually. The instrumentation consisted of two load cells for shear and normal loading, eight displacement laser extensometers for shear, normal, and lateral displacements and fourteen acoustic emission sensors for monitoring evolution of asperities’ degradation during the test. The friction angle obtained is 72° for the peak and 58° for the residual. The high values of friction angle indicates that first-order roughness and good interlocking of the joint surfaces can result in high shear strength parameter values in a rock generally regarded to have low values.

"This paper reviews the traditional mine accounting systems, including ""custodial accounting"" and unit costing, and then suggests that the use of flexible budgets represents a more suitable method of reporting costs in order to assist the mine manager in improving productivity. Examples of various applications are given to show that the result is a clear reporting structure.Custodial Accounting is Emphasized in Traditional SystemsTraditional mine accounting has been mainly concerned with the accuracy of financial reporting to ""head office"" for the use of the directors and the company's bankers and shareholders. This is often called custodial accounting and it represented the main purpose of accounting when first developed in Europe hundreds of years ago. This important development permitted the establishment of enterprises which were separated from their owners because they could rely on accurate financial reports of management's stewardship.As custodial accounting is fairly broad and historical in nature, it is often not very useful to the mine manager for ongoing monitoring of performance of mining, milling, maintenance, and other support and staff groups. In spite of the considerable investment in accounting staff and computer support, many accounting systems have not been upgraded so that they accurately reflect workplace performance on a weekly or monthly basis.Budgets are Often FixedMany mines today also still emphasize fixed budgets. Thus, the mine plan which is set in the fall of one year is converted to a monthly tonnage and detailed dollar budget for periods of up to sixteen months in the future. The only certainty in this plan is that actual events will differ; timing, mix of mining methods and production volumes will differ on a monthly basis.Unfortunately, the fixed budget has no capability to reflect these operational changes. It is frozen for the full year. The result is that actual results will inevitably be compared to an outdated target."

"Hydrometallurgy of copper ores typically involve acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). EW is the final purification stage in which a voltage is applied across two electrodes causing the copper ions to reduce and deposit on the cathode. Applied voltages are near 2 volts with current densities around 300 amps/m2. In this study, research was undertaken to decrease the energy consumed in the EW process. To do this, various cell designs were constructed and tested in which a membrane was used to separate the cathode and anode compartments with concentrated solution from SX serving as catholyte and raffinate from SX serving as anolyte. Therefore, copper in the concentrated solution would be deposited on the cathode while ferrous in the raffinate would be oxidized to ferric at the anode. Because it is assumed that ferric acid leaching is used, resulting ferric would be recycled to the leaching process. A positive side effect of the envisioned process would be the elimination of oxygen evolution at the anode and thus the prevention of acid-misting. After a cell design was selected, it was used to test a number of variables: flowrate, concentration, temperature, ion-exchange membrane, and applied voltage. Following experiments in which variable ranges were determined, statistical modeling was conducted using STATEASE software. Optimal results indicate the voltage can be decreased to 1.5-1.7 volts with current densities of 300-400 amps/m2. Significant reduction in the energy consumption was accomplished by reducing the applied voltage. Furthermore, current efficiencies and copper production rates was increased by application of the membrane.INTRODUCTIONLeaching of copper ores is achieved using mostly sulfuric acid. "The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

Mineralogical investigations in connection with gold metallurgy are usually performed to find the reason for poor recoveries by cyanidation or by other leaching techniques. Poor recoveries most commonly are obtained when (I) native gold is encapsulated in an insoluble mineral as "invisible gold"; (2) native gold is coated with a precipitate; (3) gold-bearing products are insoluble in cyanide solutions; (4) carbonaceous material in the ore adsorbs gold; and (5) associated minerals decompose and consume cyanide. Samples of refractory material quite often have low gold tenors. It is difficult to find the gold-bearing minerals in such samples with an optical microscope because the probability of finding trace minerals in samples is small. The probability decreases with decreasing grain size of the gold-bearing mineral and with decreas¬ing gold tenor of the sample. Techniques have been developed to increase the success rate of finding gold grains; some are (1) concentrating heavy minerals; (2) preparing special polished sections; (3) searching with an image analyzer; and (4) dissolving associate silicate and sulphide minerals.

"Northgate Patino Mines produces a copper concentrate assaying 22% Cu. Moisture content of the product averages 12.5% H20 when dewatering with conventional vacuum disk filters. Recent smelter contracts reflect higher energy costs and increased moisutre penalty charges. This situation forced Northgate to investigate possible alternatives such as rotary dryers and pressure filtration. After laboratory testing, it was found that pressure filtration could economically meet the smelter's requirements. Pilot plant testing was then undertaken and confirmed the laboratory test results. Based on these findings, a model I.S.F. 1500 x 28/22 I.R. Lasta filter press was purchased.This paper describes the Copper Rand dewatering flowsheet the operation of the press and the economics of the process.IntroductionNorthgate Patino Inc. operates 2 und erground copper mines and a 3300 ton per day concentrator located in Chibougamau, Quebec, some 425 miles north of Montreal and 300 miles northeast of Noranda, Quebec.Copper concentrate is produced at a rate of 250 tons per day and trucked to a C.N. siding 10 miles from the mill site and then railed to the Noranda Smelter.Until early 1981, moisture content of the concentrate at 12.5070 was acceptable since smelter penalty charges were relatively low ($0.10 per ton per unit over 10070 moisutre). In January 1981, a new contract was signed in which the penalty was raised to $1.10 per ton per unit over 8070 . This and the increasing truck and rail costs justified the change-over from vacuum to pressure filtration . The Lasta I.S .F. 1500 x 28/22 was then purchased and installed, and operation of the plant started in December 1981."

Maintenance needs information about assets to optimize availability and production needs information about performance and consumption to maximize output. In considering both these needs together as, ?Asset Optimization?, the information systems that support them are critical. The theory of Asset Optimization derives from the Lean Manufacturing concepts developed by Toyota, but some changes are required to apply this to mining operations. In particular, mining operations require automated systems due to their geographic spread and they need a strong emphasis on capturing under-performance losses as well as delays and stoppages in production. Leading metal miners and coal miners alike have applied these systems to good effect in the last 10 years. The concepts developed initially in minerals processing plants are now being applied to the mines themsleves as well as the mining logistics chain. Production increases of 5?10% are achievable with the right implementation and consideration of the some key lessons learnt in the last 10 years. Putting these lessons into action is one key step in the goal of optimizing asset performance and thus utilizing the resource at lowest cost.

"A sample of flotation feed from Bakertalc Inc., High water, Quebec was subjected to flotation evaluation to improve the recovery of talc. A number of alternative frother/collectors and depressants as well as flotation parameters including pH, conditioning time, frother/collector concentration and pulp density were assessed. In addition, the possibility of using a size coarser than that currently employed for flotation (95% minus 50 um) was investigated.As far as possible, a laboratory duplication of the present circuit arrangement was folio wed so as to minimize the cost of any changes. The best results obtained were a concentrate analyzing 95.96% acid insol for a recovery of 65.98% after four stages of cleaning. With recirculation of cleaner tailings, the recovery would be higher.The possibility of using an alternative method, based on the natural ability of talc to float unaided by a frother/collector, was briefly explored with encouraging results.IntroductionBakertalc lnc ., located in the eastern townships at Highwater, Quebec, Is approximately 140 km east of Montreal near the Vermont, U.S. border. Originally called Baker Mining and Milling Co. Ltd., it has produced pulverized talc products since 1938(1 ), although records show that talc was mined in the area as early as 1871(2). Feed to the mill originally was obtained from local deposits, but since 1952 the van Reet mine near south Bolton, approximately 25 km from Highwater, has been the source of ore .In 1957 a Raymond high -side roller mill was installed which enabled production of a greater range of talc products and, in 1960, new crushing equipment and a dryer were added. Other additions to the mill were the introduction of wet magnetic separation, although this was later discontinued, and flotation to produce high-grade talc concentrates."

Shebandowan Mine presents a unique opportunity for the mining industry to demonstrate its willingness and ability to use electrical energy effectively. The mine is a typical 250D-ton/day operation supplied by a i5-MVA power transformer. it is a recent, up-to-date design and operates on a four-day/week, two-shift/day basis. The paper outlines an energy profile based on historical data. It accurately describes the individual and total energy input For: (1) production and non-productive junctions; (2) production and down-time periods; (3) peak and average activity levels; and (4) principal energy utilization equipment. A comparison is then made of production data to electrical data, and production and electrical data to design data. The paper concludes that energy management has an important benefit for the mining industry by assisting in maintaining a competitive operation through reduced costs and fewer production slow-downs in the event of energy shortages.
