"The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered mafic intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendriticpegmatitic mafic pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and magmatic breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to 100/0 within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that affected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd:Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Several factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic interaction with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion.The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Complex, U.S.A.) in terms of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economic concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginaltype POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

"INTRODUCTIONWhile this paper deals specifically with potential coal use at the Cold Lake Project of Esso Resources Canada Limited, a majority of the technical aspects of coal conversion could apply to any oil field and industrial boilers or stearn generators. In 1962, Imperial Oil Limited's production arm (the forerunner of Esso Resources), began examining methods of extracting bitumen from a 50 m thick layer of oil sand buried 450 m below the surface in the Cold Lake area. Almost two decades of research followed to develop an in situ oil sands recovery technology that made commercial production feasible.A $13 billion mega project that would have produced 22 000 m3/d (141 000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil (160 000 bpd of bitumen) was shelved in 1981, and ultimately replaced by a phased development strategy, involving smaller production units, to bring blended bitumen production on stream as markets and prices permit.The first two phases came into production in 1985. There are currently a total of six phases in production with four more in the construction stage. Each phase has 130to 140production wells (initially) and a central plant with water treatment, crude treatment and stearn generating facilities capable of producing 150 m3/d (9500 bpd of raw bitumen). The stearn generation section for each phase consists of three 180millionBtulhour oil fieldsteam generators.In its natural state, the bitumen is too thick to be recovered using conventional oil recovery techniques. At the Cold Lake Project, bitumen is recovered by a method called cyclic stearn stimulation. Water is pumped to the central plant where it is treated and heated to produce high pressure, high temperature steam. During the steam cycle, this steam is transported in insulated pipelines to the wells for injection into the oil sand formation. This cycle lasts from 30 to 50 days, heating the formation and causing the bitumen to flow. Following an initial flowback period, a surface based artificial lift system pumps the heated liquid bitumen, mixed with water and gas, out of the well and back to the central plant. The water and gas are separated from the bitumen, with the gas being used to provide some of the fuel for the stearn generators and the water being treated and recycled. Approximately 5% of the water cannot be recycled and is disposed of by injection into deep formations . The bitumen is blended with a diluent and shipped by pipeline to market."

Solvent-coated air bubbles in the Air-Assisted Solvent Extraction (AASX) process achieve the dual role of high solvent specific surface area and ease of phase separation. The thickness of the solvent film is of fundamental interest but difficult to measure directly in the process itself. As an approach interferometry (in the UV-vis region) was used to measure the time dependent thickness of a film formed by blowing an air bubble in kerosene-based solvents. The film was stabilized by the presence of 1.5 ppm silicone oil, as employed in AASX. The film appears to comprise two layers; an outer "free" layer of almost constant thickness and an inner "bound" layer which decreased in thickness with time. The bound layer is considered relevant to AASX. For a 20 mm diameter bubble blown in LIX/kerosene solvent the initial thickness was ~ 3 um which decreased over 10 minutes to a final rupture thickness of 500 nm. The bound layer thickness and time to rupture decreased with decreasing bubble size. Correspondence to prior indirect estimates of solvent layer thickness is examined.

"Phosphorus in iron ores is considered as a deleterious component to iron making reflecting in cold shortness of the produced steel. The present study investigates the phosphorus migration pattern resulting from thermal treatment of an oolitic-type iron concentrate with and without additives. To this end focused mineralogical and microscopic observations were performed. The results have shown that roasting with alkaline additive drives phosphorus outside the hematite hosting mineral, however it remains evenly distributed inside the volume of the oolites. It penetrates inside the newly formed cementing phases of Al- Na-Si-Fe-type and also fills the interstices between the crystals. Other than phosphorus, aluminum, calcium and iron tend also to migrate towards the amorphous-type cementing phase. Finally, the possibilities for P removal by means of magnetic separation and acid leaching of the roasted concentrate were evaluated. The obtained final product presents a standard iron concentrate suitable for steelmaking with its phosphorous being dropped from 0.71% to 0.05% and iron grade of a nearly 66% being reached. INTRODUCTIONSignificant proven reserves of iron ores are still not exploitable due to lack of an economically viable and efficient technology for removal of phosphorus. Among them are the oolitic iron ores with high phosphorus which are estimated to nearly 377 billion tons (Hernandez et al., 2012). Phosphorus is a deleterious component giving a cold shortness to steel and often is penalized if exceeding 0.07%. Most of the high-P iron ores are considered refractory since phosphorus is finely disseminated and is evenly met as phosphate groups inclusions inside the limonite structure. Studies on inclusion of phosphorus in artificially synthesized goethite have shown that it is adsorbed as [HPO4]2- groups bridging the adjacent iron ions (Parfit et al., 1975). The high-phos iron ore originating from Lisakovsk deposit, Kazakhstan presents a similar mineralogical issue because the quantity of P, met as solid solution, is substantially higher than the one in P-containing minerals. A potential reason for that is the ore body formation process from the slow deposition of iron-rich precipitates together with clastic erosional sediments in rivers. There is significant quartz and clays inside and around the oolites. The deposit contains about 1.7 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves at 35–41% iron and 1.1 billion tons of inferred ore have been delineated possessing nearly the same chemical composition (Golubovskaya, 2003; Kokal et al., 2003)."

"Flotation of fine (< 10 µm) minerals is a challenge exacerbated by the emerging practice of fine grinding flotation feed to better liberate targeted minerals; however, the ability of conventional flotation cells to float liberated fines remains questionable. The Gold Ore solution using Mach reactors was tested at Mintek, South Africa, and showed an ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor, a projected recovery improvement of 4% for the Mach-reactor case, and final concentrate grade twice that of conventional flotation. Theory, pilot plant results, and key aspects of plant design, supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning, are discussed.RÉSUMÉ Le procédé de flottation de minerais fins (< 10 µm) pose de grandes difficultés, lesquelles sont aggravées par la pratique émergente de l’alimentation du circuit de flottation avec des mailles de broyage très fines pour mieux libérer les minéraux ciblés ; la capacité des cellules de flottation classiques à flotter les fines de minerais libérées reste cependant discutable. La solution proposée par la société Gold Ore, qui utilise des réacteurs Mach, a été testée à Mintek, en Afrique du Sud ; elle affichait une augmentation d’environ 180 % du facteur kfast développé par M. Kelsall dans son modèle de flottation, une amélioration prévue de la récupération de 4 % dans le cas du réacteur Mach, et une teneur finale des concentrés deux fois plus importante que celle obtenue avec la flottation classique. Evaluating the economic viability as well as the sustainability of the Circular Economy (CE) system requires a deep understanding of the distribution of all elements, compounds, alloys, materials etc. in flows. In this paper, the circularity of the copper value chain, including primary and secondary processing, is rigorously evaluated. The studied system comprises the metallic copper production from primary sources (from mineral to metal), copper-containing commodity production (copper is mixed with other metals) and copper recycling through secondary smelting to close the loop. This is linked to photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. A simulation model of this system is created using HSC Sim, considering more than 30 elements (and its various compounds), 180 unit operations and 800 flows. From the mass and energy balances obtained through the simulation, an exergy analysis is conducted to evaluate the resource consumption from a second law (entropy) perspective. Additionally, these results are complemented through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the recovery of technology elements and by-products is discussed, while quantifying the losses through the value chain. Through the digitalization of the complete system, a better CAPEX and OPEX understanding of the metal recovery and losses can be obtained, as well as the associated resource consumption and environmental impacts. New flowsheets and technologies can be evaluated. Several scenarios show how the resource consumption and the environmental impacts are affected by the recovery of different materials to produce different products. INTRODUCTION A key challenge of the circular economy (CE) is the linkage and optimization of both resource and energy efficiency of the (renewable) energy infrastructure and the resource cycle depicted by Figure 1 simultaneously. In addition, the CE requires the linkage of all stakeholders as shown by Figure 1. This has been discussed in some detail by Reuter and Bartie (2019) and Reuter et al. (2019). Copper and all its associated technology elements is one of the key enabling metals that is an economical copper colored thread through CE society (Reuter & Kojo, 2014). The Metal Wheel (Figure 2) shows the linkage of and recovery of various elements associated with copper and other carrier metals. This reveals that copper acts as an important carrier metal because of its properties i.e. the wealth of technology elements it carries from geological ores, but also its capacity to act as solvent of valuable elements and thence a key closer of various complexly connected element and material cycles when these technology elements are released during copper refining. The same applies to all other carrier metals of modern CE society as shown for example recently in a lead policy brief (Blanpain, Reuter & Malfliet, 2019).

"At Teck-Corona Operating Corporation&apos;s David Bell Mine, a successful water quality management strategy has been established. This resulted from the development and application of process technology, allowing year round discharge of an effluent exceeding the chemical and biological standards set by the Ministry of Environment. This strategy aims at minimizing contaminant levels of effluents through optimization of reagent selection and reduction of effluent volumes through maximizing reclaim water usage. Concentrator and effluent treatment plant operating practices, process chemistry and the results of the water quality management strategy are reviewed.IntroductionThe David Bell Mine is located in the Hemlo gold camp 42 km east of Marathon, Ontario. The concentrator has a design throughput of 1000 tonnes per day. The processing of the run of mine ore ( - 15cm) involves the following unit operations: grinding in a semi-autogenous mill followed by a ball mill, thickening, pre-oxidation , cyanidation, and carbon-in-pulp gold recovery followed by electrowinning and refining.The David Bell Mine water quality management strategy is composed of the following items (Goodfellow and Meyer, 1991):• natural destruction of cyanide contained in the tailing water in a large shallow tailing pond ;• preliminary treatment of reclaim water in the grinding circuit for cyanide and heavy metal removal;• pre-oxidation of sulphide minerals in pipe reactors to reduce cyanide consumption using pure oxygen;• pH control in the grinding, pre-aeration and leach circuits to minimize the dissolution of stibnite while maximizing gold recovery; • close control of cyanide addition rates to the leach circuit to maintain the lowest possible levels;• a carbon column for gold recovery;• an effluent treatment plant for antimony and heavy metal removal; and• the use of final treated effluent for industrial water underground to minimize fresh water consumption."

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "The mining industry is adjusting its sights to take a shot at the rising level of non-profit taxes which threaten to handicap the industry &apos;s competitive advantage. In the case of this particular expedition, the industry evidentally has a strong ally - the country&apos;s mines ministers. It appears that an initiative is under way to assess the impact of non-profit taxes on mining in Canada as compared to other mining nations.IntroductionSeventy-five years ago, Canadians were unceremoniously introduced to something called income tax. Since then, income tax has been identified as the source of countless evils ranging from the common cold (attributed to stress) to the demise of the economy. Some years later, the provinces jumped on the bandwagon with their own income taxes, and later on with mining taxes. These profit-based taxes had some appeal to elected officials and to a segment of the populace. The onus of the taxes varied directly with the ability to pay (in theory, at least). Previously, the principal sources of government revenues had been property taxes and customs duties, which were viewed as possibly being somewhat regressive in nature.The mining industry has always had concerns about different aspects of income and mining taxes - the tax rate is too high or the depreciation rate is too low, and so on. Recently, though, the industry has turned its sights on the expanding array of taxes which are not based on profit, including payroll taxes, capital taxes, water taxes, sales taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes, environmental levies and user fees. The industry is seriously concerned that the rising level of non-pro fit-based taxes is not only hampering the industry &apos;s ability to reinvest in Canada, but is also placing Canada at a disadvantage in terms of trying to attract new investment capital."

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

"A USER'S VIEW OF CONVEYOR WEIGH SCALESThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited includes seven mines, three concentrators and a smelter. The flow of ore, concentrates, fuel and fluxes between and within these plants requires measurement for accounting and control. The design, installation and maintenance .of weighing systems falls within the responsibility of the Instrumentation Department of Falconbridge Nickel Mines thus al lowing a common approach to conveyor weighing problems and the benefit of a common spares supply. This paper gives a brief overview of the recent experience with conveyor scales within the Sudbury Operations and discusses the problem areas.GeneralThe best way to establish the total amount of material going to or from a process is with a bucket and a stop watch. Unfortunately the flowrates involved in mining plants make the buckets very large, but wherever it is feasible static weighing is the preferred method of determining total quantity. This applies particularly to batch systems, where the material can be brought to rest long enough to allow a very accurate weight determination. Any form of weighing in motion is susceptible to variations in the forces of the transporting system. A belt scale is affected by its position on the belt, idler alignment, support stiffness, variations in belt tension, material spills and build-up, and a host of other factors all of which require careful consideration in any installation.As with instrumentation applied to any system the plant should be designed to ensure that the best results can be obtained from the equipment. This means getting the scale supplier together with the conveyor supplier as early as possible in the designing of a new plant. Any corners cut in scale installation will be paid for later in poor results and/or increased maintenance."

"Second only to profitability (but not always), productivity is the most sought after measurement for any operation. Whether it is in mining, manufacturing, construction, etc. managers always strive to know how productive various plants are. Even the Federal Government publishes, on a monthly basis, the nation&apos;s factory productivity.Just what is productivity and how is it measured? This is an important topic that needs definition. There could be as many definitions as there are people who use it. In the mining industry, the problems of defining productivity would be analogous to the definition of equipment availability. Each mine uses its own definition to suit its needs. Webster&apos;s Dictionary primary definition for productivity is ""the quality or state of being productive,"" with productive defined as ""yielding or furnishing results"". This is a definition open to a broad spectrum of interpretation. A discussion of how productivity is currently used in the mining industry and an introduction to a potentially different approach to its measurement and meaning is outlined in this paper.Defining ProductivityTypically, mining companies track several productivity measurements. These are partial measurements and can include the following: tons per specific equipment class per hour, tons per man-hour, and tons per shift. None of these, however, track the over -all performance of an operation, that is, a unit of output per unit of input.For a mining operation, output can be defined as the ore for mill processing. Input includes the required components of production to get to the first step of processing.The Wesbter&apos;s Dictionary definition exposes a major fault with the popular conception of productivity. The critical issue of accountability is not addressed. Anyone can produce, but how effectively and efficiently are resources used? Quantifying an inclusive measurement is difficult. Statistics referring to an increase in productivity are often published. For example, the statement, ""gold productivity has increased by 10%"" has many potentially dangerous interpretations. One must ask, what does this statistic really mean? Did gold companies produce 10%” more gold? Were less manpower or equipment required to produce an equivalent amount of gold? Did ore grades increase resulting in more ounces of gold produced, etc. Obviously, production and productivity can have similar implied applications and meanings, but also two different, distinct meanings.To mitigate a problem like this, a standard needs to be developed within the mining industry. Because of varying ore grade, changing waste to ore ratios, different mining methods, etc. all of which have a direct impact on mining, development of a standard is difficult. Kendrick(1) discusses the use of Total Factor Productivity as a productivity measurement. Summarized, the total factor productivity measure is an indication of the change in efficiency in the use of basic labour and capital factors associated with an operation.This measurement has little meaning when calculated at a given point in time. It should be an on-going calculation, tracking an operation over a period of time, to evaluate trends. These trends can be used to determine if an operation&apos;s productivity is what it should be, and alert management to potential problems before they become major and adversely affect an operation."

Deformation structures after tensile and compression tests on Mg926Zn64Y alloy extruded at 250°C and 400°C are studied, in as-extruded and heat treated conditions. The icosahedral phase particles stimulate recrystallization during extrusion, resulting in fine grain size. Tensile and compression tests at room temperature show comparable yield strength, with a yield asymmetry ratio up to 0.98. c-type dislocations are observed in the grains near the submicron size icosahedral phase particles. The source of these dislocations is believed to be dissociation of <c+a> type non-basal dislocations. No dislocation pile-ups on icosahedral phase particles are found. {10 1 2} type twinning occurs in compression.

The introduction and application of paste backfill over the past two decades has resulted in substantial benefits being realised by many backfill reliant mining operations who have used this technology. Paste preparation over this time period has relied basically on mechanical dewatering approaches that have included the use of centrifuges, thickeners, and vacuum and pressure filtration. In large bulk mining operations, this method of paste preparation has usually involved the construction of big and complex surface plants to meet large tonnage demands. These large plants usually have attendant high capital, maintenance and operating costs. The application of paste backfill in narrow-vein mining requires more flexibility in terms of fill preparation, transportation and placement. The method of paste fill preparation should take into consideration low manufacturing and operating costs, ability to use existing facilities at mine sites, simplicity of operation and flexibility of preparing fill over a broad range of consistencies. This paper will review alternative paste fill preparation methods and indicate those that might be better suited to narrow-vein mining.

The morphology of environmentally assisted cracks in stressed pipeline steel has been investigated. For a dilute and neutral solution (NS4) simulating ground water in contact with the steel, semi-elliptical cracks grow faster on the surface (2c) than in the depth (a), hence, the aspect ratio (a/c) decreases. This is explained using a deterministic concept since corrosion is dominant and the primary constraint is the conservation of charge. By contrast, when mechanistic conditions prevail, significant growth occurs in the depth. When underloads are imposed in the loading history, temporary accelerations in crack growth occur because corrosion rather than mechanical effects become dominant.

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of woven continuous carbon/epoxy composite materials. The theoretical and physical concepts behind the experimental results are demonstrated in details. The influence of frequency, the overlapping angle between overlapped layers and the number of overlapped layers upon the EMI shielding of composite sheets are discussed. In this work, in particular, the epoxy layers are considered as dielectric apertures of the conducting carbon fiber slab for the interpretation of the experimental results. The experimental results, using ASTM standard D4935-89, indicate that the SE can reach values greater than 90 dB above 500 MHz.

Information on the elements contained in E-Waste is important from the viewpoint of recycling. We analyzed several components of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected from citizens. The distributions of the minor metals in WEEE were determined with elemental mapping and chemical analyses. The annual change in elemental composition was investigated by analyzing equipment manufactured in different years. The information will be of use for separation techniques required for future advanced recycling.

Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

"This paper presents basic chemistry and operating conditions for the hydrolysis of ferric chloride into solid hematite and gaseous hydrogen chloride, and shows how this unit operation can be applied in chloride hydrometallurgy to regenerate strong hydrochloric acid and reject iron without also rejecting valuable metals such as nickel, copper and cobalt. Two examples are used to illustrate the hydrolysis technology and compare it to existing technology. The first is the regeneration of spent steel pickling acid, comparing hydrolysis to conventional pyrohydrolysis. The second example is the processing of a hypothetical low grade nickel laterite, comparing the novel chloride hydrolysis route to conventional sulphate HPAL technology.INTRODUCTION Whilst, in many respects, the control and removal of dissolved iron from chloride leach solutions can resemble the manner in which it is done in sulphate systems, chloride chemistry additionally offers the ability to achieve the same objectives in different ways (Harris, 2014). Conventionally, iron is oxidised to its ferric state (if necessary) and then precipitated with a base, usually magnesia where the feed is a laterite and lime where it is a sulphide, since calcium will precipitate sulphate formed during leaching. One method for controlling iron is to form FeOOH, either ß-FeOOH (akaganéite), a-FeOOH (goethite), or a mixture thereof (Fillipou and Choi, 2002). However, if akaganéite is formed, the precipitate will contain a significant chloride component (as high as 7% Cl), leading to chloride losses and difficulty in satisfactorily disposing of the residue. Washing chloride from akaganéite is almost impossible due to the propensity of the solids to undergo peptization. The conventional approach requires the addition of a base, but it is based to some extent on controlled supersaturation precipitation (Demopoulos, 2009), which produces a more uniform and crystalline material and is far more attractive than, for example, the turboaeration process proposed by Great Central Mines in their chloride copper process (Raudsepp & Beattie, 1986)."
