Since becoming a public company in October 2005, Neptune Minerals has continued to advance its primary aims. Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

The main characteristics of the 2545 km Tonga-Kermadec subduction system are the subduction of the Pacific Plate and its sedimentary cover in the Tonga-Kermadec trench and the extension and rifting of the lithosphere behind the active island arc in the Lau basin - Havre Trough back-arc systems. The subduction of the Louisville Seamount chain at 25.6°S affects the tectonic and volcanic system and separates the island arc into the Tonga arc and the Kermadec arc, respectively. To the west, a Miocene island arc is represented by the Lau-Colville ridge. The crustal extension between the Lau-Colville and the Tonga-Kermadec ridge started at about 6 Ma, and induced their separation and the onset of the southward rifting since about 5 Ma. Characteristics of the Tonga-Kermadec arc system include (i) the fourthfold decrease of the subduction rate from 24 cm/a in northern Tonga to 6 cm/a in the southern Kermadec trench, mainly north of 23.5°S; (ii) the development from fast spreading in the Lau basin (16 cm/a) to slow rifting (2 cm/a) in the southern Havre Trough with the transition from spreading to rifting at 23.5°S; (iii) variations in the composition and the volume of the subducting sediments and rocks (detritus from the Samoan hotspot at the northern Tonga arc; the aseismic Louisville ridge at the southern Tonga arc; increasing terrigenous sediments from New Zealand at the southern Kermadec arc); (iv) a number of active volcanic centers younger than 1 Ma and characterized by significant shallow submarine hydrothermal systems.

The increased interest on deep water minerals resources is a challenge for both mining and oil industry. The exploration and production of oceans minerals require a synergy between of different technologies. While mining industry is leading the dredging and processing part of the system, oil industry is contributing through development of ore lifting technology based on existing subsea knowledge. The paper presents an overview, based on published projects around the world, of different approaches to marine mining. Several exploration techniques and offshore production systems were already designed and assessed, all of them with apparently positive results. Exploration phase is well advanced and in continuous expansion allowing the discovery of increasing resources around the world of different nature but production can be considered to be in an early stage. Different from onshore mining, subsea operations require a closer cooperation with international and local authorities to preserve as much as possible the environment. There are still many uncertainties at respect and all the exploration process must be carefully evaluated to allow subsea mining to develop in a sustainable manner. Technically, mining at seabed was already demonstrated and the process is based on three main components, namely seafloor mining tools, riser and lifting system and production vessel support. This layout is based on the concept that ore must be disaggregated at seafloor first, transported to surface in form of slurry that must be dewatered before loading to be transported to processing plants onshore. The challenges are rising because the environment and safety must be taken into consideration as a priority when evaluating the efficiency of the system. The most critical challenges regarding the production operations, especially in deep water are the deep-sea excavation process, the transport of large slurry volumes, the slurry abrasivity, the power supply management and the subsea

The northern Izu-Ogasawara Arc is characterized by an abundant distribution of submarine calderas along the volcanic front to the back-arc rift zones. In many of these calderas hydrothermal activities are observed. Among these calderas, hydrothermal ore deposits with economically feasible quality and amounts are hosted at two calderas, the Myojin Knoll Caldera and Beyonnaise Knoll Caldera. We conducted two research cruises in 2005 and 2006 to investigate further hydrothermal activities and ore deposits in these calderas and to complete the geological and geophysical mapping in the area. We discovered a strong signature of hydrothermal activity in the Myojin-sho Caldera using AUV capabilities. Newly obtained geological and geophysical data clarified the relationship between back-arc rifting tectonics and hydrothermal activities in the area. Five calderas (two of them newly found) and numerous (>200) volcanoes are mapped in the area. Complete SeaBeam coverage showed a distinct feature of the back-arc rifting activity and its relationship to the submarine calderas on the volcanic front. The back-arc rift zones composed of four segments separated by E-W trending volcanic ridges. Three of the calderas are located in the rift zone and are heavily deformed by the rift normal faulting that typically trend NNW-SSE. As the Beyonnaise Caldera is located in a swarm of faulting zones at the eastern end of the back-arc rift, the formation of the hydrothermal ore deposits found in the Beyonnaise Caldera are apparently affected by these faulting activities. Newly found submarine calderas are located in the rifting zone and are heavily faulted.

Subsea mineral deposit exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 17°S in December 2009 ~ January 2010 (09IR Leg01 and 09IR Leg02) and December 2010~ January 2011 (10IR Leg01, 10IR Leg02, and 10IR Leg03). Final goal of the expedition for the first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system is to define seafloor massive sulfide ore bodies through searching the active hydrothermal vents nearby spreading centers as well as to elucidate the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area where no systematic survey have been operated before by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks. The preliminary result of topographical interpretations of bathymetry clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineaments of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which is triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Ocean core complex are favor for hydrothermal fluid path because of the long-lived faults. In further exploration, more detailed examination, including systematic CTD casting and tows, need to narrow down actual venting site around ocean core complex. Magnetic field survey is able to estimate the location of hydrothermal vents with the properties that high temperature of hydrothermal fluids over Curie-point can cause thermal demagnetization. In magnetization intensity map, most of low magnetization zones are located at the nodal point over the ridge axis and the ocean core complex.

Diamonds were discovered on the coast of Namibia in 1907 but it was not until 1962 that the first gems were produced from offshore by a barge employing an airlift. Geophysical surveys and a sampling program were initiated and an understanding of the diamond distribution was gained. Several vessels, some with multiple airlifts, were used until the early 1970's. Some spectacular production results were achieved, but generally the systems failed to retrieve the gravels efficiently from beneath the overburden and off the bedrock. Various companies continued working with mixed outcomes until the mid-1980's, when new regulations were enacted by the authorities. The local Southern sea conditions dictate the present mining methods which are now applied over several hundred kilometers of the west coast. In shallow waters divers operate from small vessels, suctioning the diamondiferous gravels to surface with gravel pumps. In water depths of up to 50 m airlifts of various designs continue to be utilized with recovery plants installed on the vessels. Beyond 100 m depths a remote controlled, tracked, vehicle is used, together with a large drill mounted on swell compensator. Each system is deployed from a separate ocean-going vessel. Production of diamonds from the offshore is rising rapidly, with expectations of further increases. The coastline is likely to be the scene of new developments in marine mining techniques.

During the last few years autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology has evolved from concept demonstrators towards commercial products. The driving forces are the move for energy exploitation towards deeper waters, naval applications and the Internet driven need for more intercontinental underwater communication cables. Other applications emerging for the future will be within environmental research and monitoring and deepwater exploration. Deepwater developments beyond the continental shelf will require the same level of survey data quality and intervention access as established for shallow water. The potential for cost savings is two folds. Firstly, there is a reduction in the survey cost it self and secondly there is a considerable cost saving by avoiding over design of subsea installations due to lack of sufficient documentation of the field. In this scenario, there is an increasing understanding that underwater robotics and in particular AUVs will play an important role in future survey and subsea engineering work. The AUV as a free swimming underwater survey sensor carrier has several advantages compared to cable controlled ROV?s and deep towed systems: The paper prepared for the ?Underwater Mining Institute 2003? on Jeju Island, Korea will focus on the HUGIN AUV concept and field results to date.

The City of Honolulu mines sand from nearshore deposits for beach maintenance. The suction dredging operation creates a discharge plume which is carried by currents and other motions until it settles out of the water column. The dispersion of such a plume is influenced by distribution of particle size, as well as site dynamics. Interest in dispersion characteristics stem$ from concern about possible deleterious influences of such a plume on the nearshore environment. The behavior of such plumes has been modeled by Brandsma and Divoky (1976), as well as others. This study is an attempt to calibrate a plume model (modified from Brandsma and Divoky's model by Wang), using concentration, turbidity, and fluid velocity measurements of a small plume taken under field conditions. This calibrated model could then be used to predict dispersion characteristics of a much larger plume. Sand suction-dredged at a depth of 12m with a four-inch pipe and discharged at midwater was used to create a test plume closely simulating the conditions found during regular mining operations. Water samples containing suspended material were taken at varying distances from the discharge, from which concentrations were measured in the lab. Transmitted natural light measurements were used to provide estimates of turbidity. Current velocities were measured using current meters, as well as drogue-following methods. These data were then used to help estimate the vertical diffusion coefficient in the model.

An unusual combination of ten new, deep (-100 m) coreholes and an extensive high-resolution seismic reflection network enables us to produce a detailed study of the phosphorite resources in the Tertiary strata of the Georgia continental shelf. These strata are mixtures of a terrigenous facies, notably quartz and clay along with minor amounts of other aluminosilicate minerals, and of a marine facies, notably phosphorite and carbonate. Phosphatic sediments occur throughout the cores, however the richest phosphorite beds are in the middle Miocene (Serravallian) sediment, where they constitute up to 70 percent of the sediment mass. Major zones of phosphate enrichment occur chiefly at major unconformity boundaries (tops of Oligocene, lower and middle Miocene, upper Miocene, and lower and upper Pliocene) and at prominent intrastratal reflectors representing minor unconformities within units. Phosphorite co-occurs with the clay minerals, especially palygorskite, but correlates inversely with carbonate and detrital quartz, indicating a low-energy depositional environment. The clay minerals present in these strata, which have an environmental consequence on recovery of the phosphorite, are varying concentrations of smectite, kaolinite, mica, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Phosphatic resources have been determined within only the Miocene strata. Sediment volume for this unit to the 100 m isobath on the continental shelf has been established using the high-resolution seismic reflection network that has been calibrated using the deep coreholes. Phosphorite grains larger than 0.1 mm average about 40% of the sediment. In turn, most of the remainder of the sediment in this size range is quartz, which is separable from phosphate grains using conventional flotation techniques. Our estimate is that 300 Gt of phosphorite lie within the Miocene strata of the Georgia continental shelf.

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 meters has been designed and implemented by the Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) of the University of Hawai'i. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, an ROV, the Pisces V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system, all aboard the 222- foot R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. All systems are operated from the stern of Ka'imikai with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multipurpose use of the ship for launch and recovery of the Pisces V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan or photo and video system operated at 10 meters above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate an ROV system. The garage/ROV system can also act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability. The ship is equipped with a SeaBeam and shallow penetration sediment profiling systems. This integrated system approach to deep ocean floor research will make it possible for HURL to carry out research pro- grams on seamount ocean resources and ocean chemistry and climate in Hawai'i and the equatorial Pacific.

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides. Plumes are subject to bottom currents which push them in preferred directions, just like smoke plumes in the atmosphere are subject to the vagaries of wind direction. India is dependent for 60% of its annual requirement of copper and the entire quantity of nickel and cobalt on imports from outside the country. Land-based resources are either too meager or of too low a concentration for economic exploitation. This has prompted the country to look to deep seabed re- sources for meeting its rising demand for these metals. The Ocean Policy of the Government of India announced in 1982 talks about the need to map and assess the availability of minerals in the deep sea and to develop necessary technologies for exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals. To be self-reliant such technologies would have to be largely developed, tested and operated indigenously. The adoption of the Law of the Sea Convention in 1982 gave a fillip to India's desire to get into the field of deep seabed mining. India applied for recognition as a Pioneer Investor in Ocean Mining in 1983 and received allotment of a mine site of 150,000 km2 in the Central Indian Ocean in August 1987. Simultaneously, the Government has taken up a programme of development of technologies for exploration of the mine site for resource assessment, environmental monitoring also to meet the commitments like relinquishment of 50% of the area to the Preparatory Commission. Technologies for exploitation of these seabed resource like the mining system, transportation and extractive metallurgy have also been taken up for development in various research institutes largely in the government sector. While India's objective in the long term is to meet the shortage of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese by the turn of the century, in the short term, the programme aims at application of the seabed mining technologies to meet the immediate needs of the country such as: a. Exploration for oil and natural gas. b. Exploration and exploitation of placer minerals and other deposits at shallow depth in India's EEZ.

Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

Co-rich hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are typical marine interface products of growth processes taking place on sediment-free substrate rocks on the seafloor. They grow very slowly and preferentially in water depths below the oxygen-minimum zone (OMZ) and have so far been found even in water depths of up to more than 5000 m, i.e. also below the calcite compensation depth (CCD); these deep ferromanganese crusts are particularly rich in Fe. It is assumed that the O2-minimum zone is the most important source layer of dissolved manganese, the decomposition of fecal pellets here also contributes to this Mn-budget. The process of hydrogenetic precipitation is basically an inorganic colloidal-chemical as well as a surface-chemical mechanism. Microbial mediations can be assumed, in particular since steps of redox-reactions are involved. The two main components of the hydrogenetic substance are hydrated d-MnO2 (vernadite) and x-ray amorphous Fe-oxyhydroxide, both of which are intimately intergrown with each other forming the extremely fine-grained hydrous oxidic material. In seawater, elements occur as dissolved hydrated ions or as inorganic as well as organic complexes which, in general, have either a positive or a negative surface charge depending on the pH of the respective marine environment. These complexes form hydrated colloids that interact with each other or with other dissolved hydrous metal ions. The main agent to oxidize the dissolved Mn2+ ions is oxygen, transported upwards from deeper water by turbulent eddy diffusion and turbulent rise processes at seamount slopes.
