The mining industry depends to a large extent on the availability of high performance equipment. For drilling this means a requirement for well engineered, reliable machines with mechanised handling and widespread utilisation of automatic control. Such machines enable performance optimisation of drilling operations and integration into a high productivity mining system. A review is presented of the current status of drilling technology as applied to the mining and minerals industry. This covers developments in: drill bit materials and design; drilling techniques; machine design; mechanisation; automation; and drilling control. It also covers the ways in which current and future mining methods and practices will influence the applications and demands placed on drilling activities. The probable impact of current research on the industry is discussed.

Mayer curves are used for process calculation in coal preparation. They can also be used to smooth washability data by fitting a hyperbola of particular properties to ash and yield, but to introduce the density variable an independent relationship with ash content must be adopted. When this ash-density relationship has a realistic form at low density, the implied form of the mass distribution function is unrealistic, suggesting that Mayer curves represented by a hyperbolic functional form are unsuited to coal washery calculations for low-density separations. Their use at higher densities is also uncertain. A similar conclusion can be anticipated when Mayer curves are used for other mineral systems.

Early computerised blast monitoring equipment consisted of a digital version of the existing analogue machines with, perhaps, a few enhancements. Many additional facilities have since been developed to enable the efficient collection of high quality data. These developments are examined with reference to digital sampling, triggering systems, the storage of complete recordings and signal processing. Recent advances have been made in the use of blast monitoring systems that comprise multiple blast monitoring locations with centralised control and data collection. Software has been developed to help record blast parameters and assess environmental effects. Computer databases have many advantages over their paper counterparts. Data can be easily retrieved and processed. The scaled distances used in the prediction and control of peak particle velocities can be calculated rapidly when the data are obtained directly from a database. Since the whole vibration signal can now be recorded, signal processing can be used to provide information such as signal length, dominant frequency and response spectra.

The calcine consists principally of ZnO and ZnFe2O4, which occur as banded and porous grains, together with lesser amounts of Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, sphalerite, quartz, PbSO4 and Fe2O3. Al is present in solid solution in most of the Fe-bearing phases and also as residual aluminosilicate minerals from the original concentrate. Si occurs mostly as Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and as residual silicate minerals. As is commonly found in the ZnFe2O4, Fe2O3 and Zn-Fe-Pb silicate phases. The major As carrier may be calcium arsenate particles less than 1 micrometre in size which are dispersed throughout the calcine. The neutral leach residue consists mainly of ZnFe2O4 and precipitated masses of iron gel-silica gel. Lesser amounts of ZnO, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, PbSO4, sphalerite, Pb-K-jarosite and basic zinc sulphate are also present. Al occurs in minor concentrations in most of the Fe-bearing phases and in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate. The residual aluminosilicates are also an important Al carrier. The major As carrier is the precipitated iron gel-silica gel phase, but some As is also present in the Zn-Fe-Pb silicate, ZnFe2O4 and Fe2O3 phases. Silicon is divided about equally between the iron gel-silica gel, Zn2SiO4, Zn-Fe-Pb silicate and residual silicate minerals. The weak acid leach residue is generally similar to the neutral leach residue except for its reduced content of ZnO and basic zinc sulphate.

The low concentration of diamond in workable deposits requires very large samples for grade estimation, and results, even then, may be erratic and difficult to interpret. Although the Poisson probability distribution cannot accurately describe the occurrence of diamond, it is suggested that it gives a better estimate of grade than conventional methods, even from single samples. Examples illustrate the simple calculation required.

(NH4)2SO4 can be used with success as a leachant to remove gypsum contained in celestite ores. The process, which is applied before flotation, provides an upgraded feed and problems related to the simultaneous flotation of CaCO3 and SrSO4 are reduced. The process is independent of the gypsum content of the feed so that each leaching stage decreases the gypsum content by almost 50%. The use of (NH4)2SO4 has an insignificant effect on the co-leaching of SrSO4 (0.45 wt.%) at each stage

The mineralisation is associated with a composite diorite to quartz monzonite stock of Permian to Triassic age that intrudes Devonian carbonate strata. In the intrusive rocks it is associated with potassic alteration and in the carbonate wall rocks it is hosted by prograde garnet-rich and retrograde epidote-rich skarn. Both porphyry and skarn mineralisation include disseminated and fracture-controlled mineralisation, the latter probably accounting for the major part of the contained minerals. Copper, gold, silver and zinc are strongly positively correlated within the mineralised zones, although there are small differences in metal ratios between the different ore types; molybdenum appears to be negatively correlated with copper and gold. Ore minerals include chalcopyrite, magnetite and pyrite in porphyry-type mineralisation and bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite and lesser haematite in skarn.

Finely dispersed, primary sulphide mineralisation in the Cu-Fe sulphide zones of copper-bearing shale of the Polish part of the Permian Kupferschiefer is mainly present in the form of framboids and spherules. This type of mineralisation is especially well preserved in organic-rich shale, where it often dominates over a later diagenetic mineralisation that consists of large grains and veins. In microscopic observations special attention was paid to composite grains of copper and iron sulphides. The results suggest that the Cu-Fe and Cu sulphides precipitated in the Kupferschiefer sediment before pyritisation of the framboids had ceased and that they replaced metastable precursors of pyrite. The precipitation of copper sulphides could have been delayed owing to the formation of Cu-organic complexes.

The slags produced in copper smelting are largely composed of silica and ferrous oxide and may therefore be regarded as essentially ferrous silicates. A fair amount of information is available on the constitutions of the liquid slags used in copper smelting and, in this connection, the large volume of work being carried out on steelmaking slags should be helpful. Constitutional diagrams are available for most of the principal systems involved (SiO2-FeO; SiO2-FeO-Al2O 3; SiO2-FeO-CaO; SiO2-FeO- MgO; and SiO2-FeO-CaO-Al2O3) and these show that additions of Al2O3 and CaO reduce the freezing points of SiO2-FeO slags but that additions of MgO increase the freezing point. A certain amount of information is available on the thermodynamics of slags, but much further work on this subject is required. Modern theories of the constitution of liquid slags deny the existence of molecular compounds but consider that liquid slags are mixtures of various ions such as, Fe2+. O2- and SiO4(4-). Investigations of the dispersion of gold in soils and stream sediments associated with three gold deposits in Thailand indicate the existence of different geochemical dispersion patterns in the three areas, demonstrating the need for the adoption of a variety of exploration techniques. The three gold deposits which were investigated were the Phu Tham Phra-Phu Thong Daeng copper-gold prospect, the Doi Tung and the Huai Hin Lab gold prospects. Overall the investigations at the three localities demonstrate clearly that the chances of exploration success can be significantly enhanced if composite soil samples are analysed to ensure a more reliable estimation of the gold content in soils and if both the 63 micrometre fraction and the field-panned concentrates of stream sediments are analysed because of the variable grain size of the gold characterising different gold deposits and surface environments.

The Bin Yauri deposit in the Zuru schist belt of northwestern Nigeria is a vein-type quartz-sulphide-carbonate gold mineralisation hosted by a brittle fault zone. The occurrence of the mineralisation in a contact zone of a Pan-African granitoid was believed to be sufficient evidence of deposition from magmatic fluids. However, studies may now indicate a metamorphic source for the mineralising fluids. A study of rare earth element geochemsitry was used to investigate the nature of the fluid-rock processes involved and identify the sources of the auriferous mineralising fluids.

"A laboratory study was undertaken to determine the condensed equilibrium phase relations at 600°C in that portion of the quaternary Fe-Ni-Cu-S system which lies in the neighbourhood of the monosulphide solid solution (MSS). The study sought to determine to w hat extent copper affects the temperatures of stability and compositions of iron-nickel sulphides in bulk compositions similar to those of massive Fe-Ni-Cu ores. Experimental data, including stable phase assemblages and phase compositions, are presented.In the quaternary system at 600°C MSS forms stable phase assemblages with pentlandite, chalcopyrite solid solution, pyrite and vaesite. Over the range of bulk compositions displayed by natural ores copper as well as metal/sulphur ratio have a significant effect on the thermal stability of pyrite and pentlandite. Errors therefore accompany the widespread practice of ignoring copper or chalcopyrite when the mineralogical and compositional changes that have accompanied the initial cooling of primary magmatic sulphides or their subsequent homogenization during isochemical metamorphism are being deciphered. These errors are most significant for ores the bulk compositions of which lie tow ard the sulphur-deficient side of the cupriferous MSS. Temperatures as much as 300°C above the copper-absent value are possible for the interpreted upper stability limits of pentlandite in these ores.The experimental data show that up to 2.0 at% copper can occur in pentlandite stable at 600°C in a bulk composition equivalent to natural magmatic ores. This is equivalent to nearly 10 vol% chalcopyrite. Pentlandite contains more copper than coexisting MSS and the copper content of both phases increases with increasing iron."
