This paper describes the circuit simulations based on SPICE of the SDI Electronic Detonator System at the system level. SDI is launching the Electronic Detonator System with a robust serial protocol exhibiting great ease in field usability and deployment. Programmable delay time with increment of 1 ms up to 10s is possible. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 detonators can be utilized. This system was analyzed using SPICE simulations and an Excel-based firing model spreadsheet. The effects of wire diameter, resistivity, detonator leakage characteristics, blasting array topology (lumped, linearly distributed or branched) were simulated using the firing model. Such spreadsheet is instrumental in determining the blasting topology of any given detonator number and bus wire diameter or resistivity. Initial simulation results were interactively coupled back into making the serial protocol more robust during typical mining conditions.

"Recently, an effort was made to calibrate the Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma (RHT) material model to reproducethe behavior of granite under impact and explosive loading conditions. The study concluded that the materialmodel captured the phenomenon of compressional damage in granite due to such loading conditionsfairly well. The present work uses hydrodynamic modeling with the calibrated RHT model to estimate thefines generated around a blasthole. This can improve the calibration of different size-distribution empiricalmodels and enhance the prediction of fines."

This paper will discuss the mechanisms of potential damage from close-in construction blasting, concentrating on two mechanisms: elastic ground vibrations and non-elastic (permanent) ground deformations. The latter will be shown to be the most dangerous for close-in blasting. With respect to elastic ground vibrations, discussion will center on the differences in vibration frequencies and impacts between typical close-in construction blasting and typical mine and quarry blasts, and how using vibration criteria derived for residential structures near mines can lead to very conservative criteria for close-in construction blasting. The effects of high frequency vibrations seen in close-in blasting will be commented on. Factors affecting the magnitude of ground motions will be discussed. Simple, practical techniques will be presented to minimize the potential for damage from close-in blasting, by minimizing the potential for rock block movement or ground heave. Case histories will be presented to illustrate some of the techniques discussed, and give examples of successful close-in blasting projects.

This report discusses measurement techniques utilized in and trend results obtained from research on delay blasting malfunctions in underground coal shots at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Charge malfunctions occur during delay blasting in underground or surface mines, rendering the explosive operations more hazardous and less productive. Modern instrumentation techniques reveal several types of reduced charge performance, resulting from cross-hole interactions. Two receptor (wave-target) charge malfunctions were detected in fourteen shots that were undeniable. There were other receptor charges that exhibited under-performance by registering out-of-tolerance or noticeably reduced detonation rates. Delay blasting generates tremendous shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave the surrounding stratum and unfortunately damage remaining unfired charges. This report contains two graphs, representing roughly 1% of total records, that show donor (wave-source) charge shock waves and rift (reaction-to-heave) compressions. These debilitating wave impacts precipitate modes of reduced charge performance ranging from weak detonations or misfires to sympathetic detonations. As recognized from previous research, impaired charges react poorly, perform less useful work, and yield fumes with atypical higher toxicity.

Lowering of quarry energy consumption participates to answer both environmental and financial issues. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry. Within this global quarry project, blast design, as the first link in the chain, has to be optimized in order to satisfy requirements of downstream operations. The authors have been developing and implementing an operational methodology using continuous field measurements and field adaptation methods for blast design. It drives the drilling and blasting work, aiming at a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Based upon actual local conditions (rock-mass assessment, face geometry, borehole deviations, etc.), blast patterns are optimized through a specific hole-by-hole blast design software. It provides a better and more consistent energy distribution, to achieve a better rock fragmentation, while avoiding explosive overconsumption. The software also calculates total energy inputs and the drilling and blasting contribution to Greenhouse Effect. Coupled with methodical fieldwork and variable density explosives, it has been leading to a real reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As the project is now reaching its final stage, demonstrations were conducted in various quarries around Europe. Several simulations were carried out and compared to the site data, in order to propose enhancements for the different phases (extraction, loading, hauling, crushing and transport) while bearing in mind the environmental impact of the quarry. This blasting methodology allows to assess the carbon footprint of drilling and blasting in conjunction with the downstream operations, thus to evaluate the global carbon footprint of quarrying. This project involved the removal of the top of an old water supply reservoir tank for the City of Lead, SD by explosives. The general contract called for the removal of the concrete top without damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. The option of a rock hammer was eliminated, due to the possibility of an unpredictable collapse damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. Different blasting options were discussed between the primary contractor and the blasting contractor, along with the pros and cons of each. The primary contractor settled on the option of drilling the structure for blasting versus using shaped charges

This paper describes the technology and methods deployed in the continuous autonomous remote monitoring of cracks in interior and exterior walls of a residence near a limestone quarry. The objective is to quantitatively compare crack response due to blast-induced ground motion to that induced by diurnal temperature changes, weather fronts, occupant activity, and other phenomena. The remote monitoring and communication technology developed to obtain and disseminate crack response data for this study may provide the means to mitigate the effect of public concerns about potential impacts of ground vibrations inherent in construction and production of raw materials; it is critical to address these concerns because subsequent litigation may result in delays and increased costs.

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

It is nearly impossible to reshoot underwater, so a bad shot causes tremendous problems. Accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the most frequent causes of blasting accidents in U.S. mining and to examine trends in blasting accidents. This accident analysis is an update of a similar blasting accident study conducted by the Bureau and published in 1983. The analysis shows that there has been a recent reduction in mine blasting accidents: The annual average number of nonfatal injuries has decreased from 107 for 1978-81 to 46 for 1982-85. The annual average number of fatal injuries was reduced from 11.3 to 5.0 during that time.

Peak particle velocity (PPV) and distance measurements from a single-charge blast test conducted by Swedish researchers in iron ore at the Kiruna Mine in northern Sweden are presented. They are used along with theoretical PPVs calculated using an equation based on hydrodynamics to determine a damage distance range caused by a single charge. This equation, which relates PPV to explosive properties, charge geometry, and distance from a charge, was then applied to a charge of different geometry that was used in drift rounds. A comparison between calculated and measured PPVs suggests that the stoping holes likely damage the easer hole locations, and the easer holes produce damage to the perimeter hole locations. The practical effect is that typical damage limit predictions based on measurements conducted in fresh or undamaged rock are conservative. This suggests that even when perimeter control is not exercised in drifting (i.e., the perimeter holes are fully loaded), the resulting damage may be less than normally expected due to the wave damping effect of the pre-damaged rock. Due to the damping effect, poor perimeter blasting practices are somewhat self correcting. However, it must be strongly emphasized that well-engineered blast designs with perimeter control are highly beneficial in relation to both economic and safety aspects.

Rio Tinto’s Colowyo Coal Mine produces 2.1 million tons per year in northwest Colorado. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven coal seams ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Coal recovery in the 6 foot thick high grade C-seam has recently been challenged due to large variations in the pitch and roll of the seam. As well, some coal damage was seen due to an increased thickness of the overburden consisting of a hard sandstone channel.

Blasting-induced vibrations can be predicted with high precision, allowing for the optimization of sequence design, delay timing, and charge configurations to minimize their indirect impact on rock masses. This optimization leads to a reduction in peak particle velocity (PPV) and dominant frequency at monitoring points. However, a crucial aspect of slope safety is estimating the degree to which vibrations influence stability through numerical modeling of the dynamic response. Slope stability is closely linked to rock mass strength, the predominant failure mechanism based on discontinuity orientation relative to the slope face, and the pre-existing stability conditions before dynamic alterations occur. Blocks, wedges, and planar failures tend to slide under lower vibration levels and are more susceptible to resonance, particularly in fractured and low-strength rock masses. To evaluate the interaction between rock mass and vibrations, photogrammetry and artificial intelligence were employed to identify discontinuity families at vibration monitoring sites. This data facilitated the development of artificial discontinuity networks (DFN), which replicated a discontinuous medium within a numerical finite element model. The input signal was recorded at the slope base using triaxial geophones and incorporated into a discontinuous numerical model. The output signal was estimated through finite element analysis and subsequently compared with geophone measurements taken at the same location. Based on real-world output signals, damping parameters and the model’s natural frequency were adjusted to align both frequency spectra. Using the calibrated parameters, vibration records from various blasting projects at different distances were applied as input signals until slope failure was induced, thereby defining maximum allowable vibration limits in terms of PPV and frequency at the monitoring point. This approach provided a framework for optimizing sequence designs, charge configurations, and delay timings to enhance slope safety and prevent failure due to blasting-induced vibrations.

Windows-based automated blast loading systems have long being conceptualised and never really taken off in the surface mining sector. However, with the introduction a windows-based automated blast loading and reporting system onto the Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMU’s) at Debswana Diamond Company operations in Botswana in August 2004, a project to automate blast loading (charging) and reporting ensued. This work was pioneered over three phases at Debswana’s Jwaneng Diamond Mine by African Explosives (Botswana) (Pty) Limited as part of the African Explosives Limited’s (AEL) integrated-mining (i-mining) concept. The first phase of the project involved the blast reporting system, at which time an average amount of explosives were loaded into all blastholes and all blast loading information was saved to a Microsoft Access 2000 database on the MMU computer. The second phase of the project, which ran until the end of the second quarter of 2008, involved manual blast plan loading and reporting system using flash disks, and the third phase which was installed and commissioned in the third quarter of 2008 and is currently operational at Debswana’s Jwaneng Mine, involves the automated blast loading and reporting system via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). This system is now routinely used to achieve operational and mining efficiency goals at the mine with respect to blasthole charging and blasting, and this paper briefly summarizes the status of this project at Jwaneng Diamond Mine where this technology is currently being monitored and also illustrates the positive mining impact that this innovation brings to the mining operation, both from an economic and efficiency perspective.

The Manassas Quarry is a large industrial stone quarry in Northern Virginia owned and operated by Vulcan Materials Company. The quarry experienced instability in a portion of the north wall, which included toppling failure in a metasediment and movement on a major fault zone. It was necessary to take remedial measures to stabilize the wall and create good quality final pit walls.
