Trail blasters for the National Park Service (NPS) live and work in remote mountain terrain throughout the western states, where any support or resupply may be sporadic and ditlicult and mountain weather affects every activity. Mechanical “aids” are the pick, shovel, rock-bar, wheelbarrow, and a Pionjar or Cobra dritl. The blaster is usually faced with an extraordinary range of work, t?om delay blasts in weathered rock using driiole depths of 18” (46cm) to as little as 4” (1 Ocm), through reducing boulders and talus fields to useable tread, blasting stumps, snags and log-jams, to the explosive disintegration and casting of animal czcasses. One day he/she might provide a 500cf (14 cu meter) anchor excavation for a suspension bridge, the next day directionally fall 60” (1.5m) diameter snags in a camp area, and the following day blast a 3-foot-wide (1 meter) tread bench across a steep bedrock slope. To be effective, the blaster must design each and every blast around desired end result, crew and public safety, maximizing effective use of limited quantities of explosive, and the minimnation of environmental effects. Since almost all drillhole blasting occurs in the weathered zone of the rock, blasting is more the art than the science of judging rock density, hardness, cohesion and prefracturing, and selecting explosives, drill and delay patterns, and loading techniques responsive to those conditions. For these reasons the NPS issues its own Blaster’s License, with a basic requirement of at least 40 hours of NPS blaster training and 3 years of supervised Blaster in-Training experience. The focus of this pre-license requirement is on safety and using explosives as a precision tool, versus just “blowing things up”.

Maintaining a continuous mining process during thunderstorms is one of the primary challenges in Peru's open-pit mines. Safety protocols necessitate the establishment of exclusion zones to minimize the risks of unplanned detonations. During such conditions, loading and hauling equipment must be relocated or, in the worst case, halted, directly affecting productivity (t/h). Implementing a wireless initiation system mitigates the risk of unplanned detonations during electrical storms by eliminating the use of electrical cables that are susceptible to electrical discharge. This study documents the implementation of this system in a copper mine located over 3,500 meters above sea level in Peru, where electrical storms between December and March necessitate modifications to blasting schedules and limit the number of drills fired per event. Through a test using wireless detonators, a key performance indicator (KPI) was established to ensure safe and continuous operation during thunderstorms. The results were significant: 20 blasts were successfully executed, firing approximately 5,000 holes and moving around 10 million tons of material, all without safety incidents or critical operational deviations, achieving zero misfires and no scheduled blast suspensions. Shovels SH001 (ore) and SH002 (waste) continued to operate together for an additional 100 hours continuously during thunderstorms, generating a potential saving of USD 3.3 million by continuously sending ore to the plant during the testing period under stormy conditions. Additionally, the blasting initiation time was reduced by 25%, eliminating two activities that involved the use of surface connection cables. This reduction led to over 150 hours of decreased personnel exposure to interactions with vehicles and environmental hazards such as dust and noise. Furthermore, the number of holes fired in a single event increased by 50%, enhancing the blast tonnage capacity and reducing equipment stops due to evacuation and reentry from two to one.

In the modern world of demolition safety is paramount and unnecessary or unquantifiable risks are not accepted (FasterCapital, 2024) and all risks must be kept As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) (BSI, 2017). This principle has led to a huge reduction in deaths in the last 50 years and the statistics continue to improve although this is starting to plateau (Beal, 2007). Under normal circumstances, this is now simply part of the normal way work is done and systems are in place to ensure both safety and economic profits are assured. What happens when the environment is less controlled and risks are unknown, such as after a natural disaster, war, an accident or a stand-up from a failed demolition attempt? A dangerous structure cannot responsibly be left alone with a fence around it so some action must be taken, but how can this be done safely and responsibly? An incident in Didcot, England in which half of a power station’s boiler house being prepared for an explosive demolition collapsed suddenly, killing four men in 2016 provides a useful case study of how technology, creativity and planning can be used to conduct complex demolition fully remotely to avoid any further risk to life.

Along the Pacific West coast of Latin America there are several large operations of metal mining activities. To mention only a few: Chuquicamata in Northern Chile moving daily approximately one million t of copper ore and waste, Cerro Verde near Arequipa in Peru, or lanaccocia. Apart from the coal deposits in north-east Columbia it is mainly to deal with metal-mining, which has due to geographical reasons relatively high cash-cost. This sector of mining is traditionally severely depending on the world-market.There are reasons to believe that the world-market will remain on a low price level and some analysts predict that in general the price-level will continue on low basis for the next decade. The cash-cost factor becomes therefore even more important as it already is. The goldprice development during the year 1999 illuminates that market changes can quickly lead to a severe crisis which forces the shutdown of mines with cash-costs close to or above the present market price per ounce. The breakdown of the cash-cost shows, however, that there are ways to overcome even the crisis like it struck the low-grade open pit goldmines around the world. Especially hitherto the “Electronic Option” is the only solution as the possible reduction using advanced technology based on the application of electronic detonating systems and newly developed special ignition procedures. The electronic option will lead to tremendous cost reductions similar to the results of research operations Thiess Contractors, Brisbane, Australia have carried out in Australia in 1998 and 1999. The electronic option allows a comprehensive integration of side effects of the blasting process which in the past could not have been achieved so far. Electronic initiation can achieve secondary effects which have an additional and positive impact on the level of costs. Appropriate application can enhance the production of material which will reduce the primary crusher costs or even make a primary crusher operation obsolete.

On May 14, 2011 a chimney blast took place in Vienna, Austria. The blasting operation was part of the demolition works at a former railway fabrication. The demolition works on this ground were done under the leadership of the Austrian construction and demolition company PORR. In agreement with the civil organizations which were involved, the commander of the Regional Military Command of Vienna, Brigadier general Dr. Karl SCHMIDSEDER ordered a reserve force engineer company to demolish the chimney. The concrete planning of the chimney blasting was done by specialist Markus SEWALD who belongs to the HEERESTRUPPENSCHULE (combined armed force school) of the Austrian armed forces.

"Ammonium nitrate (AN) is commonly mixed with a wide variety of additives to produce specialty formulations. Two additives commonly utilized are sodium nitrate (SN) and sodium nitrite (SNi). Application of the nitrite is primarily limited to gassing of emulsions. The nitrate, however, is incorporated in a wide variety of formulations. The effect of both these materials on the thermal stability of AN was examined. Experiments initially utilized lab-scale testing methods (sub-milligram sample size), such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), with scale-up to cook-off analyses (16 g) eventually applied. Labscale testing indicated that the presence of SN and SNi (both at 5 wt%) produced no harmful effects on the thermal stability of AN. The cook-off results did not agree with those from the lab-scale analyses, with both SN and SNi creating tremendous thermal destabilization of AN. These effects were seen at additive levels as low as 0.1 wt%. When SNi was employed as the additive, cook-offs became violent enough to create explosions in the testing apparatus. Although SN did not create as spectacular a destabilization, it did lower cook-off temperatures to approximately the same level as SNi. The dangerous situation created by SN andSNi seemed to be limited to cook-offs conducted in sealed vessels. If the SN/AN or SNi/AN formulations were allowed to cook-off in vented vessels, the thermal destabilization of AN did not occur. These results seemed to indicate that even “trace” amounts of what might ordinarily be viewed as benign additives could create significant destabilization of AN-based explosives under proper circumstances. Conditions created by blocked pumps, or deep boreholes could well overlap those produced in sealed cook-off vessels. In addition to showing the hazards potentially created by “benign” additives, the study also stressed that experiments designed to evaluate thermal hazards must include duplication of field variables to the fullest extent possible. "

Explosive initiated afterblast dust explosions can occur in high sulfide ore mines when the flame generated by the detonating explosives ignites the sulfide dust produced from the blast, from previous blasting, or from other mining activities. The dust explosion can be a devastating, self-propagating fireball that will damage or consume any flammable object in its path. Damage to ventilation tubing is a frequent occurrence. These explosions also produce large quantities of sulfur dioxide and other noxious gases that can take several hours to clear from the mine. Thus, these occurrences can result in substantial losses in productivity to the mine.

"At Bulga Coal, the objectives of drilling and blasting are to maximise safety and to minimise the totalcost of mining. A recent audit of two overburden blasts established that the standard of drilling and blasting is excellent. No apparent hazards were identified. Laser profiling showed that highwall free faces are reasonably planar with some exceptions, thereby promoting uniform burden distances along front-row charges. However, in three isolated areas along one face, small burden distances existed. The mean and the standard deviation of errors in the collar positions of front-row blastholes was found to be 0.3 + 0.03 m. A borehole video camera was used to show that blastholes did not feature open bedding plane partings, cavities or damage produced by the blast in front of them."

With the promising development of new technologies, automation in Drill and Blasting (D&B) is on the horizon. The data generated in all D&B activities, which is currently segregated, can be linked to become information and carry a logical meaning. This information can be used to identify critical activities and make decisions regarding corrective measures to accomplish the goals of D&B. Minera Caserones, supporting Alert2Gain (A2G), and Dyno Nobel, has been working on the development of a quality assurance and quality control (QAQC), system for the mine involving all D&B activities. The main variables in the model for D&B include data from the geology of the deposit, drilling, explosive products, and material loading, among others. To create the model, the mine is divided into blasting polygons. Those polygons are part of a block model. The block model is assembled following different rules, such as: • Block sizes of 4m x 4m x 15m, • Classification of the blocks to a particular blasting polygon using a geospatial intersection algorithm, • Algorithms connect all the pieces of data automatically with the minimum of human intervention and populate the block model, Because measuring data for each block is impossible, another set of rules and algorithms completes the model. Dyno Nobel generates an essential set of data for the QAQC system. Explosive truck loading rates and explosive products, among other data, are also included in the system. The system autogenerates reports every hour, and a summary of the results of each mining day (a mining shift of 12 hours) is distributed by email to all responsible persons to identify the critical tasks and then to make the proper adjustments to accomplish the goals of D&B. The information is updated every hour and available through a dashboard for easy and straightforward interpretation. This paper explains the conceptual details of the QAQC system implemented in Minera Caserones, how the data is aggregated automatically from the different sources, shows examples of the type of information in the dashboard, and presents a successful case where a deviation was detected, and the corrective measures that were implemented to keep the performance of the D&B activity. The paper finally discusses the next steps toward an autonomous D&B system based on new AI technologies, with minimum human intervention.

A European Directive on Identification & Traceability of explosives came into effect on the 4th of April 2008. This directive is intended to establish a harmonised system for the unique identification and traceability of all packaged explosives, detonators, reels of detonating cord and primers used in civil applications across the European Union. The directive must be adopted into the national legislation of each European Union member state by the 5th of April 2009 with compliance achieved throughout Europe by the 5th of April 2012. The requirements of the Directive apply to all explosives manufactured, used and imported into the European Union from 5th April 2012.

From 2007 to 2009, one North American Quarry and Construction Business experienced a series of flyrock incidents. In the spring of 2009, this business declared that the frequency and severity of Flyrock Incidents had reached an unacceptable level. A Flyrock Elimination Program was launched.

Emulsions have been developed for over forty years to become the most common water-resistant explosives used in the mining industry. An emulsion is a common commodity, with many examples in our day to day lives of one immiscible liquid dispersed in another. They have varying degrees of stability from a few seconds to years. What makes their application in explosives unique is twofold. They contain a high concentration of salts in the dispersed phase and also have a far larger volume of dispersed phase than continuous phase. The continuous phase contains at least 75% by weight of an oxidizer such as ammonium nitrate dissolved in water. The crystallization point of these solutions is often >60oC which means that the formation of the emulsion has to occur at an elevated temperature. Once the emulsion is cooled, its structure helps to prevent the formation of crystals in an otherwise unstable system. At room temperature there is a considerable potential for the small oxidizer droplets to crystallize which is countered by the strength of the oil layer and also the size of the emulsion droplet. If the emulsion droplet is too large then crystals can form which may lead to rapid deterioration of the emulsion and overall crystallization, accompanied by a temperature rise as the heat of crystallization is released from the emulsion. The size of the emulsion droplet is critical in preventing crystal growth and subsequent droplet coalescence and emulsion break down. One method of examining emulsions and understanding their structure is to use optical microscopy to measure droplet size and also emulsion deterioration from shearing, temperature cycling and when contaminants are introduced, such as detergents, different oil types, coating agents and dust particles. In the current context of heightened concerns with explosives security, there is significant interest in technological controls to improve security. It is important to be able to control what is fired, by whom, where and when. This paper describes research Orica has performed to investigate and test biometric systems to address the question of "by whom". The goal of this research is to incorporate the most suitable biometric system onto the 'blaster' unit of an electronic initiation system. This approach will ensure that only authorized personnel can initiate a blast involving electronic detonators. Requirements analysis: we initially explored many different biometric technologies to evaluate them against the requirements, including security, usability, ruggedness, size, form factor, privacy, and operational temperature range, This analysis identified chip based fingerprint sensors as the best candidate. Development of prototype units: in order to test the identified sensors, we modified standard, commercially-available, electronic blast initiation units ("blaster") to incorporate a fingerprint reader. Testing and evaluation: Biometric We conducted a biometric scenario evaluation in order to determine: 1) security level (measured by false accept rate (FAR)); 2) usability (measured by failure to enroll (FTE) and false reject rates (FRR)), and to 3) discover environment specific issues and challenges (such as temperature, humidity, dirt, or those related to the usage patterns of the user group). Tests were conducted at quarry sites in eastern Ontario, Canada. Results show rates of: FAR= 0%, FTE= 1.67%, FRR= 28.81%. Overall, these results suggest that this fingerprint biometric technology has a good level of usability in this application of electronic blast initiation control.
