from 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig. 1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig.2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91 %, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from 1990 to 1996.

The 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone has been widely used as a personal sampler for size selective sampling of particles within the respirable range (Dp < 10 gm). Because of their inertia, the particles are unable to follow the swirling flow (outer vortex) within the cyclone. The particles migrate to the bottom of the cyclone, depending on their size, and get trapped into the inner vortex which leads to an eventual blow-off from the top of the cyclone. By measuring the size distribution of the particles in the free stream and in the collected sample, the aspiration efficiency of the cyclone can be calculated. Velocity difference between the free stream and sampling velocity. Inlet orientation, particle impaction and deposition, particle inertia and free stream turbulence result in the departure of the aspiration efficiency from unity and this, in turn, leads to inlet bias. Although the effect of inlet bias on sampling efficiency has been investigated in past, the results lack detailed information and show only some general trend. In this effort, a systematic, in-depth experimental work on the effect of inlet bias on the sampling efficiency has been undertaken using non-intrusive Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and impactors.

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter&apos;s presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

The Rio Blanco massive hydraulic fracturing demonstration has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Atomic Energy Commission, and a group of 15 industry participants. CER Geonuclear Corp. has been retained as program manager to evaluate the stimulation effects of very long fractures, suitably propped open in thick sections containing multiple intervals of low-permeability gas-bearing sands. The zone of interest for this demonstration includes Fort Union and Mesaverde sands from about 5,800 to 8,.200 feet deep in Rio Blanco County, Colo., about 1 mile from the site of the May 1973 triple nuclear detonation aimed at stimulating production from the same reservoirs. Drilling the test well and evaluating the reservoir prior to fracturing was funded by Government participants; fracturing and production testing will be funded by industry. The test well has row been completed at a total depth of 8,170 feet, and data obtained from logs, cores, production and drill-stem tests indicate reservoir conditions to be less favorable for gas production than anticipated. Structural position is lower than expected, resulting in higher water saturation than was determined for the same sands at the nuclear fracturing location. The lower sands of the Fort Union sequence appear to have higher shale content than has been encountered in other wells in the area. Despite the likelihood that gas productivity will be undesirably low following stimulation, the industry participants decided to proceed with the stimulation program with the thought that the resulting data would be useful. The success of the stimulation test probably will have to be judged by production increase rather than by production volume.

One phase of the research and development work on synthetic liquid fuels conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va. in cooperation with West Virginia University deals with the purification of synthesis gas.2/ Most of the experimental studies on gas purification have been directed toward the removal of organic sulfur from gas, either catalytically or by adsorption with activated carbon. An important part of the purification program has been the development of suitable analytical methods for determining organic sulfur compounds. As the total sulfur content, organic and inorganic, of purified synthesis gas should not exceed 0.1 grain per 100 cubic feet, the need for accurate analytical methods is apparent. It is also apparent that such methods must be rapid if one wishes to evaluate various processes for removing sulfur from gas. The organic sulfur found in most gas produced from coal is usually present as carbon disulfide, carbon oxysulfide, methyl and ethyl mercaptans, and thiophene, with the exception of thiophene, the remaining organic sulfur compounds respond similarly to catalytic treatment and can be removed effectively. Not only does thiophene resist most catalytic treatment, but it poisons some catalysts, rendering them ineffective in removing the other forms of organic sulfur.

Coal has been transported by belt conveyors in mines for many years; however, only since the beginning of the general mechanization period have complete transportation system of this type been employed. Aside from my complete belt-conveyor transportation systems, belt conveyors are frequently used in conjunction with other transportation. Many early installations, for the most part, were made without standards as a guide. As a result, some States have outlined certain requirements based more or less on experience following mine fires. Correlation of these regulations should result in more uniformity in connection with standardization of regulations. The National Electrical manufacturers Association has published standards for mining-belt-conveyor installations2/ that should be helpful to the coal-mining industry generally. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2F3/ requires certain controls for permissible-belt- conveyor drives, and similar requirements are listed in Bureau of Mines bulletin 514.4/ Committees of the American Mining Congress have prepared much valuable information concerning operation of belt conveyors, and a subcommittee on fire-resistant belting has been active. 5/

Near-optimum parameters were determined by the Bureau of Mines for vapor deposition of rhenium on heated copper substrates by hydrogen reduction of rhenium hexafluoride (ReF6). High-purity deposits of nearly 90-percent theo¬retical density were obtained with the reaction chamber at 250° C, with an H2 to ReF6 volume ratio of 25 to 1, and with an ReF6 flow rate of 5 grams per hour. Some rhenium deposited as a loose, black powder. When the established near-optimum parameters were carefully followed, this could be minimized but never completely avoided. Varying the reaction chamber pressure, both above and below atmospheric, yielded excessive quantities of rhenium powder. Deposition efficiencies, based on only the coherent metal, ranged between 70 and 75 percent. Massive deposits contained only spectrographic traces of impurities. The average microhardness (Knoop, 100-gram load) of vapor-deposited rhenium was 907. Limited research on the deposition of rhenium-tungsten alloys by reduction of the mixed hexafluorides produced deposits in which linear composition gradients were pronounced; this nonhomogeneity was attributed to the wide variation in optimum hydrogen-reduction temperatures of the two hexafluorides (250° C for ReF6 and 550° C for WF6). Using deposition temperatures between 250° and 550° C did not eliminate the composition variations.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. To provide a means for rapidly evaluating proposed mine layouts in order to avoid potential hazards while minimizing loss of coal. The Approach: Development of a computer program that will compute many possible mine layouts by changing the mine plan until the arrangement giving minimal hazards with optimum extraction is found. How It Works: The Hazard Evasion Program for Mine Planning, developed by the Bureau&apos;s Denver (Colo.) Mining Research Center, tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on the criteria of maximum safety for workers with minimum abandoned coal), limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme. The program is applicable for room and pillar or longwall mining, for oil and gas well hazards, and for other hazards that can be described mathematically such as channel sands, potential bad roof areas, faulting, voids, or water pockets.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a field test for detecting the presence of columbium in a variety of minerals containing the clement. The test consists of fusing the mineral or rock powder with potassium pyrosulfate in a porcelain crucible, digesting the melt with hot dilute hydrochloric acid to release the columbium oxide (Cb205), and subsequently reducing the columbium oxide to a lower oxide by adding tin, which gives a blue color to the contents of the crucible. The method will detect 1 percent of contained columbium oxide (Cb205) in a mineral sample provided no tungsten is present. If a mineral containing appreciable titanium is test,-!d in the same manner, the solution in the crucible becomes violet. In the presence of columbium, titanium at first causes a violet coloration of the solution, which after a few minutes is masked by the stronger blue of the reduced columbium oxide. Although tantalum oxide (Ta205) does not interfere with the columbium test, tungsten gives a blue color that is indistinguishable from the color obtained with columbium. A simple method is available to detect the presence of columbium in the absence of tungsten, but when the presence of tungsten is suspected, the sample must be subjected to somewhat more elaborate chemical tests to determine the presence or absence of columbium. Although these latter tests can be made in the field, several steps are involved that arc best performed in the laboratory with simple equipment.

Are the safety rules in your work place effective? Do supervisors enforce them as they should? Do supervisors abide by these rules? Safety rules are an important aspect of many company safety programs, particularly if employees must work in an intrinsically hazardous environment such as a coal mine. However, for various reasons, supervisors sometimes fail to enforce safety rules (Arvey & Jones, 1985; Hartshorn, 1998). This paper presents some findings obtained from interviews with coal miners about why supervisors sometimes fail to enforce an important mine safety rule. It also contains a few suggestions addressing what could be done to help supervisors perform this job function more effectively.

Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state regulatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

Are you afraid of the dark? Of course not, at least not since you were about six years old, anyway. But early man was - afraid of the dark, and he had good reason to be. Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven&apos;t been seen in mining country for some time now; but it&apos;s st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can&apos;t see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

The work reported here was undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to investigate new methods of preparing high-purity metal. Tungsten hexachloride was prepared by direct chlorination of scrap tungsten metal and by treating tungstic oxide with carbon and chlorine. The resulting tungsten hexachloride was purified by distillation and reduced win: sodium, magnesium, or hydrogen. The metal prepared by these techniques was at very high purity after arc melting but of variable quality prior to arc meIting. Metal recovery ranged from about 40 to 90 percent of theoretical values, It was found possible to deposit a smooth, dense coating of high-purity tungsten on the inside of a heated tube by vapor-phase reduction of tungsten hexachloride at reduced pressure.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

The petroleum sector continued to dominate Ecuador&apos;s economic activity in 1978, accounting for nearly 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of total export earnings. In 1978, a more flexible petroleum export price was adopted which permitted an expansion of foreign market opportunities. During 1979, Ecuador took advantage of disruptions in the world petroleum supply and renegotiated existing export contracts to accomodate the rapidly escalating world market price. Petroleum sales on the spot market were maximized, and prices reached unprecedented levels. By taking royalty payments in-kind, Ecuador increased its volume of petroleum available for term and spot sales. Although the volume remained about the same as in 1978, the total value of 1979 petroleum exports increased to about $920 million, reflecting a 76% increase over the $523 million received for 1978 crude oil exports. Concerned about its steadily decreasing petroleum reserves (recently estimated at about 1.1 billion barrels), rapidly increasing and heavily subsidized domestic consumption, and the prospect of having to import substantial amounts of petroleum by 1983, Ecuador announced plane which it anticipates will double reserves within the next 5 years. The Government plans to spend $1 billion over the 5-year period. Plans include drilling 325 exploration and development wells and establishment of a secondary recovery program for the Sachs and shushufindi fields. Some exploration wells are expected to reach a depth of 17,000 feet. It is thought that substantial reserves exist in the southeast Amazon region. Late in 1979, it was announced that some 10 million hectares will be available for exploration tenders-probably in blocks of about 200,000 hectares each-in the Amazon jungle of the Orients and in the coastal and offshore regions. The Government planned to commission a private, independent analysis of Ecuador&apos;s petroleum reserves that would also include recommendations on efficient production levels.
