A Bureau of Mines geologic study of Pennsylvanian and Permian coalbeds in southwestern Pennsylvania was undertaken to determine the effects of coalbed geology and petrology on in situ coalbed gas contents. Data were obtained from 18 coreholes from parts of four 7.5 ' quadrangles in southwestern Washington and northwestern Greene Counties, and from a single corehole in Westmoreland County. A total of 88 samples from 24 coalbeds were collected for direct-method testing to determine gas content. The samples were also analyzed for petrographic composition, chemical composition, and vitrinite reflectance values. Corehole information was used to generate isopach maps and geologic cross sections useful in data interpretation. Results of the investigation show that coalbed gas content is related to vitrinite reflectance, but not to petrographic composition. Gas contents are also influenced by other geologic factors such as roof rock lithology and competency, and location with respect to local fold structure.

This experiment investigated the effects of different machine mounted area lighting technologies on visual performance. The primary objective was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the lighting technologies based on the visual performance of thirty-six human subjects in a simulated underground mine environment. Incandescent (Incand), fluorescent (Fluor), and light-emitting diode (LED) technologies were used to create four lighting combinations. Visual performance was quantified for the detection of movement in the peripheral field of view and the identification of ground hazards. Measurements were made of the speed [response time measured in milliseconds (ms)], the accuracy (the number of targets and objects missed), and the subjective discomfort rating of the glare experienced for each lighting combination. A secondary objective explored the effects of aging on visual performance. The results indicate that lighting combinations which consisted of LED area lights significantly improved visual performance for the detection of hazards found in the peripheral field of view, as well as those found on the ground. They furthermore, indicate that age plays a significant role in visual performance.

Use of digital computers makes possible a more efficient and complete analysis of data from a mineral deposit . This computer program was written and used during an investigation into the efficiency of methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore , wherein it was necessary to make repeated computations involving different combinations of data . (a) Moisture. - Moisture, "as fired," is specifically significant in pulverized-coal firing because of its effect upon the continuity of raw-coal feed to the pulverizer, pulverizer capacity, flame stability, and speed of ignition. The extraneous moisture content is a rough index of potential difficulties in unloading and maintaining the flow of raw coal to the pulverizer and of pulverized coal to the furnace, with the troubles increasing geometrically as the percentage increases. Sticking or other stoppage of coal flow at any point between the bunker and the furnace is especially serious with pulverized-coal firing because there is danger of immediate loss of output. Where moisture is a problem, the designer must exercise great care in the design of coal-handling and preparation apparatus.

In 1904 the Government began a series of fuel-testing investiga- tions at its fuel-testing plant at St. Louis, Mo. These investigations, which were placed under the supervision of the United States Geo- logical Survey, included chemical analyses, steaming tests, gas- producer tests, briquetting tests, coking tests, and washing tests of samples collected from the various coal fields of the country. The specific purpose of the investigations was to analyze and test the coals and lignites in the United States, in order to deternime their fuel values and the most efficient methods of utilizing them for different purposes. Part of the fuel-testing plant, including the briquetting equipment, was moved to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, and the fuel-testing investiga- tions were made one of the divisions of the technologic branch of the Geological Survey. In 1908, after the close of the Jamestown Exposition, most of the fuel-testing equipment was removed to its present location at the Pittsburgh experiment station, Fortieth and Butler Streets, Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1910, an act of Congress, effective July 1, established the Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior and authorized the transfer to this bureau of the fuel-testing investigations that had been carried on by the technologic branch. Bulletins presenting the results of various inquiries and investiga- tions relating to briquetting have been published by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. As the supply of some of these bulletins is exhausted, the Bureau of Mines has decided, instead of reprinting them, to publish the more important facts they contain

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clarion County, Pa. Of the 15 samples collected, 1 was of metallurgical quality as received, 4 could be sufficiently upgraded to provide acceptable products, and the remaining 10 samples could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because their sulfur contents could not be lowered to meet the standard. For steam or power generation, 1 sample was of low sulfur content as received, 1 sample could be upgraded to low sulfur content, and 10 samples could be upgraded to medium sulfur content. The original sulfur content of the remaining three samples can be appreciably reduced by removal of the sink 1.58 specific gravity material; however, these coals would be classified as medium sulfur coals both before and after removal of the sink material.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the principles of support-rock interaction, based on structural matrix methods which permit mathematical formulation of the problem and computer solution. The principles are given under two main sections: the first discusses the idealization of the tunnel support structural system for matrix analysis; the latter discusses the analysis procedures necessary for carrying out the solution. A general frame matrix computer program and a medium-size computer should be sufficient for carrying out the procedures involved. The example problem consists of a circular tunnel support which is subjected to a uniformly distributed vertical load, Three wall thickness-radius ratios are studied in combination with four support-rock modulus ratios. This problem illustrates the main procedures of the support-rock interaction analysis involved, and examination of the results reveals the influence of the relative rigidities of the support and the rock.

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft3 plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium over the temperature range -5° to 80° C and at pressures to 800 atmospheres. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the runs were fitted to a fourth degree polynomial equation of state in the pressure and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 was used. All data for a particular isotherm were treated simultaneously. A temperature function was found to represent the parameters B and C. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are believed to be accurate to better than 0.05 percent.

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described. A comprehensive bibliography covering all aspects of trapped miner, through-the-earth electromagnetic location and communications systems is appended.

"INTRODUCTION Scheelite occurring in tactite at the Black Rock tungsten mine, near Benton in Mono County, Calif., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as part of their search for additional sources of supply of strategic minerals authorized under the Strategic Materials Act. 3/4/The work accomplished by the Bureau, and the assays of samples taken are described in this manuscript. The ore found aided materially in prolonging the operating life of the mine during the recent national emergency, supplying much-needed tungsten for war use. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigations of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more efficient utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report describes the preparation characteristics of the most significant coal beds in Wise County, Va. It is one in a series of reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Wise County produced approximately 6,600,000 tons of coal in 1955, of which about 2,110,000 tons was cleaned mechanically. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that 1,341 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

The Bureau of Mines has sampled microstructure of low-pressure flat flames by mass spectrometer for normal methane-oxygen-argon and for methane-oxygen-argon-bromotrifluoromethane flames. The physical and chemical phenomena, and the method of analysis of mole fraction data to evaluate net reaction rates are here considered in detail. Included is a computer program listing with output on one flame. Chemical species considered are CH4 , CO, CO2, H, H20, OH, Ar, H2, O2 , O, H2CO, CH3 , CF3Br, HF, HBr, Br, CH3Br, HCO, F2CO, CH2 CF2 , H02.

"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. The Bureau of Mines investigated a series of Fe-Al-Mo alloys strengthened by ZrC (zirconium carbide) precipitates as chromium-free substitutes for stainless steels. Melting and fabrication methods were devised, and the effects of minor additions of columbium (niobium) and cerium on the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance were determined. Zirconium carbides could not be con-trolled reliably to produce fine precipitate dispersions. A more reliable carbide strengthening mechanism is required if the high-temperature strengths of types 304 and 316 stainless steels are to be duplicated. Workability and oxidation resistance of the alloy series were excellent.
