The attrition of activated carbon, and the loss of gold associated with it, is of significant economic importance to the operation of a CIP/CIL circuit The focus of this study was on activated carbon recovered from an elution circuit which was deemed too fine for reuse. Results of cyclosizer and laser particle size analysis identified that most of the carbon was contained in the larger size fraction suggesting formation by abrasion. Digestion and AAS analysis of the individual size fractions identified a disproportionate concentration of gold in the finer size fractions which was identified by scanning electron microscopy to be due to the presence of fine metallic gold formed as a result of the acid washing process. Attempts to strip the remaining gold using sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphide based solutions proved unsuccessful due to poor elution efficiencies and re adsorption of gold. Upgrading of the material by froth flotation was also investigated using various conventional flotation reagents which had some success in concentrating the free metallic gold, however, grade and/or recoveries were considered less than desirable. Greater success was ultimately found in the transfer of gold from the fine carbon material onto coarser virgin activated carbon using a caustic cyanide solution. Sodium sulphide, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride based solutions were also trialled but proved less successful owing to their inability to mobilise metallic gold or gold cyanide species. Repetition of the transfer process proved capable of stripping 97% of the gold contained on the carbon fines for abed volume ratio of 6:1.

This study investigated the effect of surface roughness on Schmidt rebound hardness (RL). Four different test surfaces of rock samples were studied: natural, ground, cut surfaces, and core samples. There was significant variability of standard deviation based on the RL on the natural surface, which indicated high roughness of the rock surface, whereas surface polishing caused a significant decrease in standard deviation. ISRM and ASTM methods were compared to estimate unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for different testing surfaces. RL obtained from the cut surface was found to be more reliable than those obtained from other testing surfaces for the prediction of UCS; however, regression and ANOVA analyses revealed that the ISRM method gave a more accurate UCS estimation of rocks with highly rough surfaces. It was also shown that RL values obtained from a cut surface were significantly higher than those obtained from core samples. Therefore, a comparison between RL values obtained from core samples and cut surfaces was made based on previous studies. This study statistically showed that estimated UCS values are not statistically significant if Schmidt rebound tests are not performed on similar surfaces. In addition, the mineral grain sizes of the studied rocks, different testing surfaces compared with those in literature, and standard deviation from RL are evaluated and discussed. The Schmidt hammer technique is a rapid, inexpensive, and straightforward method for estimating UCS for preliminary assessment; however, roughness of the surface should be eliminated if variations are shown in the surface rebound hardness.

This paper presents an evaluation of the effect that the mineral feed characteristics have on the metallurgical performance in an industrial flotation circuit. Variables such as mineralogy, particle size, solid content and mineral grade were evaluated using a flotation simulator, which was previously developed and validated using industrial data from different concentrators. The metallurgical performance was evaluated not only from the point of view of recovery and concentrate grade, but also by analysing less common variables such as froth carrying rate, froth and collection recovery, water recovery and others. Then, new data from the industrial flotation circuit was used to complement this analysis and evaluate the simulator predictability by comparing simulated and measured data. The results allowed for the quantification of the significant effect that mineralogy and particle size have on recovery and/or concentrate grade. Therefore, the grinding stage and flotation cells design become important factors to avoid a significant loss in metallurgical performance when feed mineral characteristics change in an industrial operation. In this context, an evaluation of cells design and arrangement should be performed to compensate the loss in recovery and concentrate grade in order to find an optimal operating condition. Many minerals processing operations result in crushed rock being mixed with a liquid. Sometimes, the rock particles have to be dried before the next process begins and there may be a considerable distance between the equipment carrying out these processes. Bateman Engineered Technologies (BET) developed, patented and commercialized a method of simultaneous pneumatic conveying and drying. A joint project to assist with optimizing the process is under-way. Part of it is a numerical simulation of the process. The simulation is done using a dedicated program written in MATLAB, (commercial software which is widely used in engineering). It accounts for heat and mass transfer as well as particle transport. The main part of the program consists of a loop containing a series of equations which are evaluated sequentially. During any particular iteration, the properties are changed one at a time. Since the properties are changing relatively slowly, this method gives good results. The outputs of the simulation are consistent with the operational experience of BET’s engineers. The output is very comprehensive and all numerical. Since the program is currently being used for research purposes, flexibility is very important. Thus the output is converted into a spreadsheet file. Variations in the output quantities are displayed graphically using MS Excel. Some simulation could have been done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The advantages and disadvantages (technical, financial and skills requirements) of the two approaches for this particular type of simulation are compared briefly. The Tati Activox® Project will be the first full-scale implementation of the patented Activox® process (The Tati Activox® project was deferred in 2008. Please refer to the Norilsk Nickel press issue on the topic for more info). The process was developed by Norilsk Process Technology and has been tested on Tati mine sulphide concentrates in laboratory, pilot and demonstration plant scales and demonstrated its viability. There are inherent risks to the final scale-up of the process from the demo plant and one of them will be investigated in this paper. Compartment 1 is designed to leach approximately 77% of the total nickel leached. For this reason agitation requirements in the first compartment of the autoclave are reviewed. An attempt is made to minimize the process and mechanical risks associated in achieving oxygen mass transfer into the slurry solution. The agitator powers for oxygen mass transfer are calculated using empirical correlations and compared to demonstration plant testwork. The resulting gassed power per unit volume (P/V) is higher than most commercial autoclaves and raises uncertainty on the viability of using such high unit power inputs. Additionally, there is concern about the ability of the autoclave shell to withstand and support the higher loading of large agitators. An alternative solution to designing for the increased P/V is assessed in which the number of compartments within the autoclave is reduced from 5 to 4 by removing the compartment wall separating compartments 1 and 2. This results in an enlarged first compartment containing 3 agitators instead of 2. Therefore the compartment 1 oxygen demand is supplied through 3 agitators, which lowers the P/V per agitator. The reduction in the number of autoclave compartments raises the potential for short-circuiting the mean flow pattern by slurry particles. Short-circuiting and low velocity zones could result in a lower recovery of metal and localized hot spots, respectively. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was conducted to quantify these concerns and also to evaluate further design considerations. The results indicate that the proposed design change to 4 compartments affects short-circuiting. The impact of increased short-circuiting on the overall autoclave recoveries is not quantified, however; it is expected to be negligible based on testwork done in the Tati Demonstration Plant and similar modifications made to another operating autoclave. The CFD analysis also suggests that there will be no low velocity zones within the compartment.

Effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of chromite ores by M. L. YOUNG, B.Se. (Rand), M.Sc. (Rand) (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) The effective thermal conductivities in stagnant air of packed beds of fines, lumps, and indurated and pre-reduced pellets of two chromite ores with different chromium-to-iron ratios were determined in the temperature range 300 to I 100°C by the heat-sink technique. Packed beds of fines, whether of the size fraction between 20 and 65 mesh, between 65 and 100 mesh, or between 100 and 150 mesh, were found to have the same values of effective thermal conductivity. For one ore, the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh at tem peratures above 600"C were higher than those for finer particles. This difference is explained as being due to the increase in importance of radiation heat transfer, but no definite conclusions are reached about the relative contributions of conduction and radiation heat transfer to the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh. Two published models were used for the theoretical prediction of values for thermal conductivities of the indurated and pre-reduced pellets as well as of lump ore. The experimental and theoretical results were in good agreement in view of the uncertainties in the assumed values of emissivity and thermal conductivity of the chromite ore.

Manganese ores are the major source of manganese for the production of manganese ferroalloys. There is a gap in the knowledge of the decrepitation behaviour of manganese ores, which presents a problem in the operation of smelters. Decrepitation, which is the breakage of the ore particles upon heating, is an important quality parameter for these ores. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which South African manganese ores decrepitate during preheating in a rotary kiln. The effects of temperature, rotational speed, and particle size decrepitation were investigated. Manganese ores were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln at temperatures of 600, 800, and 1000°C, and rotational speeds of 3, 6, and 12 r/min. The size ranges were +6-20, +20-40, and +40-75 mm and the residence time was constant at 30 minutes. The decrepitation index (DI) is quantified as the ratio of the mass of <6 mm particles after pre-heating to the total mass of the sample. It was found that the DIs for all ores used were proportional to the temperature and the rotational speed and inversely proportional to the particle size range with temperature being the most important parameter. Ore A was the most susceptible to decrepitation followed by ore C and ore B; this was mainly to the decomposition of kutnohorite, the content of which was the highest in ore A and the lowest in ore B.

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

This paper presents data collected from full-scale plants in order to verify the predictions of a new simulator of CIP or CL operations. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the simulator predictions. The simulator is able to predict the effects of many of the complex operating phenomena in GIP and CL plants that previous simulation techniques could not describe. This is illustrated by predictions of how factors, such as the manner of carbon transfer, concurrent leaching, and gold loading on eluted carbon, can affect the performance of an adsorption plant.

High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

South Africa has produced more than a third of the total gold mined throughout history and remains a major although, until recently, no longer the largest producer of gold. South African gold production peaked in 1970 with an output of 1 000 t, a major component of the western world?s gold production, with the development of the country?s economy having been based largely on this mineral wealth. The costs and difficulties of increasingly deep-level mining, coupled with increasing labour costs and the low gold price until relatively recently, have seen production fall steadily since then, with the closure of many mines including those of the Central Rand Goldfield in the mid seventies. Thus in 1998, only 464 t were produced, with 342 tons being produced in 2004. In 2006, 275 tons of gold were produced and after more than 100 years was the last year as the world?s largest gold producer. In 2008 gold production was 221 tons, making South Africa the third largest gold producer after China (292 t) and the USA (234 t). Gold production would have been lower if it had not been for massive tailings dam retreatment operations that started in the late seventies, including in the Central Rand Goldfield. Mining of a remaining deep and lower grade shallow resources has now also become a major focus and has recently lead to a rebirth of reef mining on the Central Rand Goldfield.

The inaccurately drilled blastholes from the planned locations cause changes in the spatial distribution of explosive energy; some areas of the blast may receive a surplus of explosive energy, while others see a reduction. This results in less uniform fragmentation, reduces the efficiency of mining operations and increases costs. Additionally, it can lead to slope stability issues, flyrock, and uneven benches. To mitigate these problems, this study attempts to reduce differences in the explosive energy distribution (EED) through an optimization approach that adjusts the height of explosive columns in blastholes. Two optimization algorithms, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Tabu Search (TS), are tested. The latter is preferred for its local search neighbourhood strategy that gives superior computation times. Applications on different blast patterns result in improvements of 0.53–1.54%, or 2.14–3.94% when only the affected blocks are considered.

SYNOPSIS The feasibility of rejection of nitrogen from stack gas by recycling of top-gas with cold-blast 95 to 98 per cent oxygen is assessed. It is concluded that nitrogen could be removed to a level below 3 per cent of the stack-gas using recycled cleaned cold top-gas and 95 to 98 per cent oxygen produced by a single-column air separation plant with liquid-air reflux instead of liquid nigroten reflux. The partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the stack-gas could be doubled without top pressure and the deposition of carbon and reduction of iron oxides by the stack gas could be markedly increased. It is concluded that rate of stock descent could be doubled compared with present-day practice and an iron make of 4400 kg/m 2 of hearth area/hour may be attainable with a working volume of 129 m2/m hearth diameter by this method. Oxygen consumption is estimated at possibly 280 m2 (0.4 t)/t iron made and carbon consumption at possibly 280 kg/t iron. Power consumption for oxygen including auxiliaries is estimated at 304 kWH/t 100 per cent oxygen as 95 to 98 per cent gas. The air separation cycle due to Schuftan is discussed in some detail, and the components of a 1 600 metric ton/day separation plant are briefly discussed. The paper is a theoretical essay.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. So, some new methods were developed, such as catalytically oxidizing technology of NOx to allow subsequent recovery of gold. Keywords: nitric acid; pretreatment; refractory gold

In this study we explore the use of a novel numerical modelling approach to study the effect of pillar reinforcement on pillar stability. Case studies in the literature indicate that tendons, strapping of the pillars, and shotcrete or thin spray-on liners are commonly used to reinforce pillars. No clear methodology exists to select the type of support or to design the capacity of the support required, however. This has led to ongoing collapses in some mines in spite of heavy support being used to reinforce unstable pillars. A limit equilibrium model with confinement on the edge of the pillar was used to simulate the interaction of the support with the failing pillar. The model correctly predicts that an increase in confinement will lead to a decrease in the extent of pillar failure. As the displacement discontinuity boundary element method allows for the efficient solution of largescale bord-and-pillar layouts, the effect of pillar confinement can now be studied on a mine-wide scale. Accurate calibration of the limit equilibrium model is, however, required before this method can be used for the design of effective pillar support.
