The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. The work reported in this paper is part of an MSc research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

The prototype and test results of the instrument for quick determination of incombustible content in deposited dust as a protection against coal dust explosion propagation are presented. Presently existing methods do not permit to obtain quick information about incombustible content, needed for the proper protection of workings. As the operating principle for the e instrument the dependence of reflection of infrared radiation intensity on incombustible content in the sample is chosen. The construction is based on the modern electronics. The measurement will be done at the sampling site. The range of the instrument is 0-100% of incombustible, direct reading, autonomous supply, weight no more than 0.5 kg, and is intrinsically safe according to EN Standards. During the Conference the instrument will be commercialized.

To date, Anglo Research has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in the AMIRA P9 (AMIRA International Limited), to develop comminution and flotation models for several Anglo Base Metals and, to a lesser degree, Anglo Platinum flotation plants. Plant optimization is thus achieved through steady-state sampling, model-fitting and simulation using the JK SimMet and JK SimFloat software packages. The surveys can vary depending on the needs of the plant/client. The survey can therefore include as little as a single piece of equipment, an entire milling/flotation circuit, or a complete circuit from primary comminution to final flotation concentrate (i.e. the ?integrated survey?). The presence of the AR team on-site usually precipitates in face-value observations that can lead to initial improvements. This stems from the knowledge-sharing on best practice that exists in parallel with the surveys. Numerous (reasonable) changes can then be simulated, thus indicating the optimization step most likely to result in the best efficiency improvements. The simulations can include changes in the flowsheet, ore characteristics, mill loads, grinding media size, change in grind, flotation residence time, air hold-up and several more. Plant surveys can result in process changes that provide the plant with either: higher plant tonnage, improved plant grind, additional flotation recovery and/or improved product grade. The additional benefit of performing an integrated plant survey is that the effects of an optimization change in the comminution circuit can be simulated using the flotation model. This paper describes a number of case studies where individual and integrated plant surveys were conducted by AR for Anglo Base Metals.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

Various theories proposed to account for microbial corrosion are reviewed as a background to a better understanding of this type of corrosion in iron-based alloys. Experimental evidence is presented to show that even stainless-steel alloys are prone to microbial attack by sulphate-reducing bacteria. The corrosive attack by the bacteria is due primarily to the hydrogen sulphide that is produced as part of their metabolic processes.

A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. The method is applicable to any type of mineral deposit, the only requirement being that the orebody should be represented accurately by a block model.

PREFACE During the past year, the Council of the SAIMM undertook a major strategic-planning exercise to review all its current activities, and to redefine its scope and objectives in the light of changing circumstances. The following are the four main concerns that prompted Council to take stock of the situation. (1) Over the past five years, the SAIMM has become heavily involved in a variety of new activities. (There are many examples, of which the expansion in book publications and the establishment of physical metallurgy as a third major discipline with its own colloquia and schools are perhaps the most important.) While these new activities have considerably broadened the SAIMM's scope, they have resulted in a significant increase in the day-to-day workload of the President, Office Bearers, and Council members, and of the secretarial staff based at Kelvin House.

The multi-reef area of Cooke 3 Shaft provides a unique mining challenge on account of the very thin middlings between the pay bands and the marginal values of the reef. It is uneconomic or impractical, because of the excessive heights, to mine the middlings using conventional stoping methods. The development of suitable mining methods is discussed with particular emphasis on the control of water inflow and the policy of not jeopardizing or sterilizing other reef horizons by the mining method implemented. No definite solution is currently available, but with the aid of instrumentation, computer analyses and mechanized mining equipment, the mine continues to attempt to maximize extraction and profits.

This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

The effect of microstructure on the deformation and fracture properties of 3CR12 steel was investigated at different strain rates in the temperature range -196 to 200°C. The yield stress of the as-received steel, showing a banded dual-phase microstructure, was much lower than that of the flake-like dual-phase microstructure produced by heat treatment. The heat treatment also resulted in an increase in the volume fraction of martensite. The fracture toughness of the as-received 3CR12, on the other hand, was significantly higher than that of the heat-treated material. These changes in both yield stress and fracture toughness were attributed to the effect of microstructural parameters on the constraints imposed on the deformation and subsequent failure of the ferritic phase in the as received and heat-treated steels. The exceptionally low resistance to crack extension in a plane parallel to the roiling plane of the as-received material was ascribed to the delamination process, which is typical for controlled-rolled steels. The yield stress and fracture toughness were found to depend on temperature and strain rate. The appearances of the fracture surfaces were found to be consistent with the mechanical properties.

"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Whereas traditional estimation techniques are interpolative, within the Witwatersrand the estimation is primarily extrapolative, with the majority of the data being sourced from the mined-out areas. This significant challenge to estimation resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation and evaluation."

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

Details of the technologies are provided and they include chlorination, roasting, bacterial and pressure leaching, leaching gold with thiosulphate and thiocyanate, N2Tech flotation, HPGR treatment of hard and abrasive ores and, finally, the use of Hydro-Jex technology for improving gold recovery from heaps.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. A study was initiated and solutions implemented to address the root causes of a 30%?40% lower than predicted product yield achieved at a Mpumalanga coal mine. A holistic MRTM approach, which focused on improving exploration, geological sampling and analysis, geological modelling, planning, mining, and beneficiation practices, was used. The study indicated that deviations in the planned versus actual yields at the DMS plant were caused mainly by incorrect geological yield predictions, high and variable levels of dilution, and near-dense material, as well as the textural properties of the ore. The objective of the investigation is to optimize the truck and shovel operations for pre-stripping at New Vaal Colliery by introducing campaign mining. The aim of campaign mining is to improve the efficiency of the loading, hauling, dumping, and maintenance operations which are critical to the success of truck and shovel operations. The current loading (single-sided loading method), hauling, and dumping operations at New Vaal Colliery were found to be inefficient. Time studies were used as a major indicator to highlight the inefficiency of the truck and shovel operations, and it is recommended that an improved loading configuration, hauling, and dumping operations be implemented by using campaign mining. It is also recommended that a service truck be used to maintain the pre-stripping fleet in order to reduce travelling times to the main workshop. As expected, the improved operating conditions will lead to an increase in pre-stripping production.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

[ ] Great Basin Gold Ltd. (GBG) owns the Hollister Mine and operates it through the wholly owned subsidiary Rodeo Creek Gold, Inc. The property is located in northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend gold belt within the historic Ivanhoe Mining District. The mine is located on the western edge of the Northern Nevada Rift, a major north-northwest trending structural zone that has localized middle Miocene volcanic rocks and numerous epithermal gold deposits. The precious metal deposits are low-sulfidation epithermal systems characterized by banded quartz veins with electrum and silver selenides. The Hollister Mine will employ the selective underground mining method of cut and fill. This will be combined with split shooting (resuing mining method) to optimize recovery and reduce dilution. The focus of mining will be on extraction of ?ounces? from the narrow-veins rather than trying to maximize tons. The initial drifts will be excavated along the strike of the vein and then capped with a substantial concrete sill pillar. Back stoping with hand held drills will be used to selectively mine the vein. The stopes will be backfilled with waste rock material. With every lift, an 18 inch concrete cap will be poured onto the backfill waste rock to prevent gold values from being lost into the fill. Targeted ore production rate will be over 400 tons per day. With current ore reserves, project life is estimated to be around eight years; however, Hollister geologists view the site as one of the most prospective systems for bonanza vein deposits in Nevada. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.
