The never-ending quest for gold-bearing ore deposits is a primary industry in Canada, employing people of widely differing expertise. The exploration models for gold deposits are generally geologically complex and the targets have relatively small cross-sectional areas. These problems are compounded in Canada by the minimal outcrop exposure in most mineral provinces and the high percentage of water-covered areas. Naturally the chances of successfully delineating an economic gold deposit are very much greater if all parties involved can act as a team of explorationists constantly confemng amongst themselves particularly as the applicable disciplines generally overlap and complement each other. Three case histories (see Figure 1) are presented to illustrate this philosophy with emphasis placed on the role of the geophysicist in translating the exploration model as defined by the geologist into physically measurable parameters and identifying target areas with similar characteristics. The Conwest-Miminiska property in Ontario is a grassroots exploration play. Additional ore reserves needed to be delineated on the Salmita property in the Northwest Territories. At Laura Lake, near Chapais, Quebec geophysical methods were employed to trace thin high-grade mineral intersections under deep overburden and severe cultural interference.

This paper outlines the chance constrained binary integer program developed by the author in his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, New York, 1973. The optimum planning of a mining program involves the determination of a production schedule which maximizes the net present value of the mining property. The actual mining process has an inherent stochastic and discrete nature. In particular, the demand for the mined product and the grade of the mineralized material in the ore are the two most important stochastic mining variables. The decision to mine or not to mine any block of a mining property is a binary integer variable. This paper outlines the formulation of pit production scheduling problem as a chance constrained binary integer program. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are nonlinear in binary variables which have subsequently been linearized. The planned objective is to meet with a stipulated high degree of reliability, all the random demands as they materialize with a random supply of the commodity being marketed as determined by the eventuating random grade values of the exposed ore blocks and the mining system's production constraints such that the discounted total production costs over the entire planning horizon are minimized or the profits maximized. The emerging surface of the mine in each scheduling period is determined by the values taken by the binary decision variable associated with each block of material in each scheduling period.

Introduction Many solids processes that look feasible on paper or even in pilot studies become disasters in full scale. Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale be- cause of larger solids contact pressures, thermal shocks, or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full-scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. Fortunately, proper applications of solids flow principals and solids flow properties measurement at full scale conditions can anticipate the problems and thus provide an accurate basis for full-scale design or existing plant modifications. Solids flow properties The basic solids flow property definitions are given in Table 1 (Johanson, 1966, 1976, 1978, 1985). In this section, the author will discuss each property and its potential for creating full-scale pilot plants. Unconfined yield strength The unconfined yield strength of a bulk solid determines the tendency for cohesive hangups of the solids in the process and is effected by the time at rest, chemical reactions, temperature, liquid content, solids size consist, and phase changes of solids or fluids involved in the process. One of the common mistakes is to consider the solids condition only at the beginning and the end of the process. For example, consider the direct reduction of iron ore. The feed solids are free-flowing, hard lump ore or pellets. The end result is a hard, free-flowing reduced sponge iron lump or pellet. One might conclude that the process involves free-flowing lumps. This conclusion may seem reasonable based on laboratory studies oreven pilot plant studies where solids contact pressures are very low. Unfortunately, during the reduction reactions at high temperatures, the rock or pellets soften and, with solids contact pressures associated with the full-scale plant, may fuse together, thus providing a possible solids hangup in the moving bed reactor not evident in the low pressure pilot scale. Fig. 1 shows some typical unconfined yield strength measurements for pellets as a function of solids contact pressure at various times at rest. Note at low consolidation pressures, generally associated with laboratory or pilot plant studies, the pellets show no strength unless held at rest for an extended time. This will produce a very free-flowing condition in pilot plants that will not exist in the full size reactor.

In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.

Natural acid drainage is generated from pyritic rock underlying 17 percent of the upper Alamosa River basin. About one-third of these acid producing rocks have nil carbonate buffering capacity; there the streams carry significant acid plus dissolved Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn. In part of the basin, aquatic life is limited by the natural acid drainage. In the four miles where the Alamosa flows through pyritic rock the river grows toxic to trout. Inhospitable conditions continue downstream for at least another four miles. The waters become refreshed, naturally, through metal dilution, metal oxide and hydroxide precipitation, and acid neutralization. Water quality fluctuates in seasonal cycles. Dissolved metals and acid, which are generated year-round by weathering, are stored over winter in the unsaturated zone in the retained water and in soluble metal- sulfate minerals that form by evaporation of acid-metal waters. Seasonal discharge variations cause metal concentrations and pH to shift in the trunk stream; the acid drainage source streams, however, shift only slightly by season. In early spring, metal concentrations and metal loads increase as metals and acid are flushed from the unsaturated zones by melting snow. Peak metal loads occur at this time, and precede peak flow by up to two months. Other metal load peaks occur during peak flow and monsoon flow, even though metal concentrations are diluted at that time by precipitation. In late spring and thereafter, discharge of neutral pH water wanes, so trunk stream pH falls and metal concentrations return to previous high levels. Metal concentrations appear to be low from November through January when dilution from precipitation is lowest, but rise in February to near peak yearly concentrations. In years with high monsoonal flows, metal-laden waters apparently flush from the unsaturated zone and metal concentrations remain low from about October through January. In years with low monsoonal flows, however, metal concentrations in October and November at least are higher.

The simplest natural ventilation cycle is similar to a Joule or Brayton cycle. This comprises two reversible adiabatic processes in the shafts and constant pressure processes underground and on surface. The thermal efficiency of such a cycle is given by the temperature increase in the downcast shaft divided by the absolute temperature of the air at the bottom of the downcast shaft, and is independent of the temperature increase underground. This efficiency is comparable to the Carnot efficiency, which is the greatest possible value between constant temperature reservoirs, source and sink. Two variations of the Joule cycle are investigated, using numerous work examples. In the first, dry air is used as the working substance, a fan is provided at the top of the upcast shaft, and various mass rates of flow are used with frictionless shafts and a constant resistance value in the horizontal mine workings. The lost work less the fan work gives the natural ventilation work, and this divided by the enthalpy increase in the workings gives the thermal efficiency. The thermal efficiency increases dramatically with mass rate of flow, although the enthalpy increase remains constant. This appears to violate the second law of thermodynamics, since the frictionless case has a Carnot efficiency. When the lost work is added to the enthalpy increase, however, the efficiency decreases slightly from the Carnot value, to conform with the second law. This increase in efficiency with mass rate of flow is often referred to as the reheat effect, although the air is not heated. The second investigation is similar to the first, except that the air entering the downcast shaft contains a small amount of water vapor, and there is evaporation in the mine workings only, until the air entering the upcast shaft is saturated. There is, of course, condensation in the upcast shaft. In this case, it is not possible to calculate the Carnot efficiency, but the thermal efficiency is 20 to 40% of the similar dry air values. This decrease is much more than can be accounted for by the larger value of specific heat for water vapor. In addition, the natural ventilation work is almost constant with increased mass rate of flow, and the thermal efficiency based on heat addition tends to decrease. The thermal efficiency based on heat and lost work decreases in conformity with the second law. The reasons for the differences in behavior between dry and moist air are not readily apparent.

In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

"In our work, the preparation technique of high pure manganese sulfate directly from low-grade rhodochrosite ore (MnCO3) was studied and improved intensively, including the effective leaching process and the short purifying process. Based on the same ion effect, the repeated leaching of rhodochrosite with sulfuric acid is proposed to improve the solubility of Mn2+ and inhibit the dissolution of the impurities Ca2+ and Mg2+. Moreover, the repeated leaching process could make full use of rhodochrosite and lower the dosage of sulfuric acidas raw material. With the aid of theoretical calculation, Ba(OH)2 was chose to adjust the pH value of manganese sulfate solution, and BaF2 to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+completely in the process of purifying. The results demonstrate that the extraction ratio and the recovery ratio of manganese reached 94.3% and 92.7%, respectively, which shows the prospect of industrial application. In manganese sulfate production, the heavy metal impurities have been decreased to less than 1ppm. Moreover, the content of calcium, magnesium and sodium has been decreased to less than 20ppm, which meets the standards of high pure reagent for energy and electronic materials. Our study enlightens an approach to the sustainable application of low-grade rhodochrosite.Introduction Low-grade manganese carbonate ores (=14%) becomes gradually the main resources for exploitation and applications in China according to national mineral resources survey (Tan et al 2004 and Singh et al 2017). Therefore, the electrolytic deposition technique of rhodochrosite faces great challenges including low electrolysis efficiency, high-resource input and high-pollution discharge (Fu et al 2010, Michelis et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013). Recently, more and more amount of manganese series with high or super high purity such as MnSO4, MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO is demanded with the development of energy and electronic materials. Due to low-grade ores containing multiple elements such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, conventional preparation of manganese sulphate with high purity from electrolytic product is characterized by long production-cycle and high-energy consumption (Subrat et al 2011, Mpho et al 2013). By contrast, hydrometallurgical method combined with thermal decomposition, hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processes has been widely studied because of its high efficiency, low consumption and low cost (Chen et al 2008). But the key problem in direct preparation of manganese series form low-grade rhodochrosite is to remove completely the multiple impurities such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium (Liu et al 2014). So it is urgent to develop a sustainable alternative approach with character of short process, high efficiency and environmental friendly."

INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

Hardpans developing in tailings storage facilities (TSF) in Australia have been investigated in relation to Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) generation. This research had three main aims. Firstly it was to obtain an understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of tailings residues which support the in-situ formation of cemented layers and hardpans. Secondly it was to examine how effective hardpans are at reducing ARD generation, and thirdly it was to investigate the promotion of hardpan formation to inhibit ARD and pollutant generation. This paper presents the data collected during investigations into the effectiveness of hardpans to reduce ARD generation. Three basic types of hardpans have been identified and examined: laterally extensive surface hardpans, laterally extensive cemented layers; and laterally discontinuous hardpans developing in locations of seepage. Their mineralogy, morphology, lateral extent, depth and rate of formation are dictated by sulfide and gangue mineralogy and content, milling and depositional techniques of the tailings and the climate. As the sulfides oxidise, acid and heavy metals are generated, while gangue mineral degradation is enhanced, adding to elemental loads. These liberated ions are then available for precipitation of secondary mineral cements through concentration during evaporation. In TSFs where hardpan development is restricted by mineralogy, grain size or climate, hardpan formation can be enhanced in seepage zones (eg. seepage from waste rock dumps) where tailings are exposed to seepage waters laden with heavy metals and sulfate. The effectiveness of hardpans in the inhibition of ARD generation is dependent on reducing oxygen diffusion and water infiltration into the underlying tailings. A reduction in water infiltration will diminish the transport of contaminants developed during sulfide oxidation and subsequent reactions. Water and gas movement through the hardpans at the CSA (Cu, Zn, Pb) and Elura (Pb, Zn, Ag) mines has been investigated. Permeability tests indicate the hardpans have reduced the infiltration rates by 10 to 100 times that of the fresh tailings. Oxygen diffusion rates were calculated and were shown to be up to 1000 times lower in hardpans than in fresh tailings. Such decreases are explained by persistent elevated 'degrees of saturation' within the hardpans. These conditions were verified using a conceptual model of sulfide oxidation reactions, which allowed comparisons of diffusion coefficients with modelled and observed depths of oxidation within the tailings impoundments.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the U. S. coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise in the future as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations. INTRODUCTION Face ignitions are a concern for many U. S. longwalls and will continue to be until better control technology can be developed or until reliable and accurate knowledge can be provided as to when an explosive concentration is present. Figure 1 shows the number of reported U. S. underground longwall ignitions from 1980 to 1990. The number of longwall panels have remained relatively constant over this time period with 89 reported in 1980, compared to 96 in 1990. In spite of technological improvements in mining over the past decade, no significant reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions has occurred. One factor contributing to this is that the U. S. coal industry is mining gassier seams causing methane liberation rates on the average to be higher (Trevits, 1991; Grau, 1987). Another factor is the development and implementation of more reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems that are generating higher production rates and higher methane liberation rates. Additionally, the average panel width in 1991 was 714 ft; a 44 pct increase from 1980 when faces averaged a width of 495 ft (Merritt, 1992). Increases in panel width also impact total face methane emissions. [ ] There have been substantial advances in control technology in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In some mines, efforts to drain methane in advance of mining have proven effective, but geological conditions often preclude this approach (McCall, 1984; Ely, 1989). In other cases, ventilation air quantities of over 100,000 ft3/min and face velocities of over 1,000 ft/min have been implemented on longwall panels. Other operations have implemented anti-ignition spray systems which use water sprays behind each cutting bit to quench the hot streaks created from cutting noncoal materials (Courtney, 1990). Other control techniques, such as the modified shearer clearer system and ventilated drum, have been used to increase the amount of turbulence and ventilation around the cutting drums, thus reducing methane levels (Cecala, 1986; Divers, 1987).

Many in mining believe that the industry is slipping behind in public image, in public mineral education and, particularly, in mining's basic right to do business. It is critical to turn things around - to change the rules of the game soon - before mining loses any chance of recovery. In the industry's experience, there is a technique of project development and operation that can help gain ground on public opinion. Only recently has this technique had a name, and that is sustainable development. What is sustainable development? Sustainable development is broadly accepted and supported by the international business community. And significant thought and work has been devoted to the subject. Research into the topic was initially confusing because the definitions of sustainable development are written in terms the writer, and his or her constituency understands. To some, it refers to environmental protection. To others, it is about social responsibility. And to the developer, it is about economic benefit. Slowly a theme emerged from the research that seemed to be part of all the definitions. That theme has three parts. First, the development, whatever or wherever it is, must contribute economic value to the developer and the stakeholders of the development. Stakeholders in this context include employees, neighbors, residents of the surrounding area, citizens of the country, suppliers and all others affected by the development. Next, sustainable development must contribute environmental value. This means that at a very minimum it must be neutral and not cause irreparable damage. And last, and what is new for miners and most other businessmen, it must contribute real social value to the stakeholders. How to use the concept? With that three-part theme as a working definition, the mining industry must find ways to use that “the challenge is for an individual company to translate what sustainable development means for them. There is no one model..." Donald W. Gentry is president and chief executive officer of Polymet Mining and former professor emeritus of mining engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He added: "While simple to state, the concept is anything but simple to implement. Present trends indicate ... one wins the sustainable development argument by staking out the high ground early..." In other words, start using sustainable development principles at the beginning of the project. New ways of doing business The mining industry's challenge is to implement sus¬tainable development universally around the world. Paternalism as a way of doing business is dead and a new model of doing business is emerging. All types of businesses are learning to deal with the stakeholders of new developments. Mining cannot be an exception to these trends. To understand how the international mining business came to sustainable development, it is useful to look back a few years. For many North American mining engineers, there were few opportunities for foreign assignments from the 1960s to the 1980s. Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

INTRODUCTION Although the mining method described in this chapter is locally designated "modified Mitchell," there are so many features which are characteristic of square sets that the designation "modified square set" would describe the method equally well. The method was developed as a result of local operating experience with various mining methods, observing operations in mines in the southwest where Mitchell stoping had been thoroughly developed, and an exhaustive study of min¬ing methods literature. Since 1941, modified Mitchell stopes have con¬tributed over 50% of the total stope production and were largely responsible for supporting production dur¬ing the war years and period of declining manpower and increasing costs. GEOLOGY The community of Gilman is situated on Battle Mountain at an elevation of 2743 m (9000 ft) in the Battle Mountain mining district, about 45 km (28 miles) by highway north of Leadville, CO. The sur¬rounding area, including the Mount of the Holy Cross and Eagle River Canyon, is noted for its beauty and recreational facilities, both summer and winter. Massive sulfide ore bodies of the limestone replace¬ment type occur as chimneys and mantas or as blankets in strata dipping 0.19 rad (11°) northeasterly. A chimney is shaped like an inverted cone with shale, quartzite, and porphyry caprocks forming its base. This relatively impervious capping apparently blocked rising ore constituents which formed the chimneys and mantas. At the apex or lower extremity of the chimneys, the ore follows small fractures and bedding planes in under¬lying quartzite. Dimensions of chimneys vary, ranging up to 61 m (200 ft) vertically and 76 m (250 ft) horizontally near capping. The manta or blanket ore bodies vary in vertical cross section from one hundred to several thousand feet. One such manta was developed from its outcrop to its chimney source approximately 610 m (2000 ft) downdip. Another manta of substantial cross section and length did not follow shale but extended updip with limestone capping from its source at a lower horizon. All chimneys, however, make up to the shale¬quartzite-porphyry capping. Chimney ore minerals are mainly pyrite and chalco¬pyrite with accessory copper and silver minerals, surrounded by, and in places overlain with, marmatite, pyrite, and galena. Manganosiderite extends into the ore. It may or may not be impregnated with sufficient marmatite and galena to be of commercial grade. Ore may be massive, coarsely crystalline, or sandy, some¬times rubbly. Generally speaking, chimney ore masses are incompetent and of variable grade. Caprock is heavy and caves readily. Manta ore minerals are mostly marmatite, pyrite, and galena associated with manganosiderite. Structural characteristics of the ore are similar to those found in chimneys and where the manta contact shale capping the ground is unusually heavy. However, the large manta with limestone capping mentioned previously consisted of a hard strong ore mass in fairly strong host rock. Commercial ore contacts are fairly regular in this manta but in others the ore waste contacts along the walls are irregular with shaly limestone pendants extend¬ing downward into the ore at capping. Dolomite sand is also quite frequently encountered along wall contacts and less frequently overhead. MINING METHODS Practically all stoping in the Gilman ore bodies has been carried on with timber and fill methods and the features which have been briefly described have dictated the choice. Although at the present time modified Mitchell and underhand square-set stopes account for the total production, considerable production has been obtained from alternate horizontal cut-and-fill stopes with Mitchell truss stopes in the pillars. This method was highly satisfactory in the hard manta ore body mentioned earlier and where ore excavations 11 m (35 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) long required no auxiliary timber support. INTRODUCTION Coal mine entry intersections are high-risk areas for roof falls due to inherently wide roof spans, excessive stress, and variable intersection shapes resulting from breakthrough misalignments. Statistics from underground coal mines reveal that a high percentage of injuries occurs from roof and rib falls in entry intersections (Peng, 1980). The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting a field research project to investigate failure modes surrounding underground coal mine entry intersections. The research objectives are to (1) develop a method to determine failure modes and stress-displacement relations around coal mine intersections and (2) develop engineering guidelines and empirical relationships for use in designing safer coal mine entry intersections. The basic approach to achieve the objectives is to instrument and monitor intersections before, during, and after intersection development in order to determine contributing parameters, such as in situ stresses, stress changes, strata movement, geology, physical properties, and mining sequence, that may influence the short- and long-term stability of the intersection and adjacent entries. This paper describes a rock mechanics instrumentation program, data analyses, and a comparison of two case studies conducted at two underground mines, designated as "A" and "B", in the Illinois Coal Basin. The instrumentation plans and data collected during development and long-term monitoring of four-way intersections and adjoining entries are presented. Data analyses of pre- and post-mining roof stress, pillar loading, strata movement, roof bolt loading, and geologic features are included. INTERSECTION FAILURE MECHANISM The region surrounding an entry intersection is characterized by different failure criteria than the region surrounding a single entry. Stresses induced during intersection development may result in a high incidence of roof and rib failures. Various numerical modeling techniques have been used to evaluate the failure modes surrounding intersections (Gercek, 1982; Chugh et al., 1975). Numerical modeling techniques include problems associated with the analysis of post-failure behavior, provision for different horizontal stresses (i.e., 01 f 021, and determination of inputs required for any non-elastic behavior. It seems likely that more sophisticated failure criteria, based on actual field data, are needed. The Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive instrumentation program to investigate actual intersection failure mechanisms and to provide an improved understanding of stresses and deflections using beam and plate theories. Beam theory is not applicable to analyzing intersections (Wright et al., 1964); however, it can be used to explain roof deflection and failure (shear and flexure) of adjacent entries and to provide an improved understanding of stress changes and displacements as the entries, crosscuts, and intersection are developed (Hanna et al., 1985). Beam theory may be used for entries when the roof length is twice the width. When the length is less than twice the width (as in intersections), the roof must be analyzed as a three-dimensional problem, and stress and deflection calculations are based on flat plate theory (Adler and Sun, 1976). The confined-core theory (Wilson, 1972) hypothesizes that within a typical pillar, two regions exist: a confined-core region where the horizontal confining pressure is uniform and approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and a yield zone where the vertical pressure increases from nearly zero at the rib to a pressure peak at the boundary of the yield zone. The strength of coal in the yield zone ranges from nearly zero at the rib to nearly full strength at the confined core. The vertical stress in the confined core decreases from maximum at the yield zone boundary to the overburden pressure some distance into the pillar. Excavation of the adjoining entries

During last year's AIME meeting in New Orleans, Deepak Malhotra and I were discussing some of the topics that would be presented in this Symposium. It seemed appropriate that along with papers on specific reagent and flocculant types, we should address research management aspects of new product development. This development is a long, arduous task that requires a significant technical and fiscal commitment by the chemical company and potential users. A flow chart depicting the research process is shown in Figure 1. The sequence of events are plotted on an undefined time line. Our experience has shown that it takes 3-5 years to complete a typical reagent development project. A new project starts with an idea of how to do something better. The ideas range from relatively simple product modifications to opportunities created by technological change. An example of this is the use of flocculants in tailings operations to close the water recycle loop. The change was brought about by the need to conserve water and comply with environmental statutes. The result was the development and wide-spread use of synthetic polymers to help in solid-liquid separation. More recently the ups and downs of oil prices have led to development of coal water slurries as an alternative to fuel oil. The slurries contain high levels of chemicals (up to 3%) to insure proper stability and burn characteristics. There are technical changes under way right now that may lead to ideas for other new products. One exciting source of new technology is the ability to manipulate genetic material of microbes to select for specific capabilities. This has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Biologically assisted leaching and removal of wastewater impurities are two possible end uses. I'm sure that there are many others. The ideas can originate anywhere and are often half-baked at first, but to lead to new products they must be refined to provide project definition and eventually a research plan. A chemical ,development project cannot be started without approval to commit the company's resources. The internal selling job is often very difficult. The company must see clear financial benefits in order to launch efforts that may not pay off for many years. It is critical to project the total market, profitability, eventual market share, and timing of introduction of the new product. There is much uncertainty in this and the research manager is often skating on thin ice to retain his credibility. Once we obtain support from upper management, the research team is assembled to start the project. The teams generally consist of organic chemists, research metallurgists, and technicians. They have access to analytical scientists and technicians for surface and analytical chemistry. The projects are often augmented by help from university staff and consultants. This is particularly true where there is a need to develop fundamental understanding of the technology in addition to synthesis of chemicals. The project now proceeds along two lines. First, there is an emphasis on understanding the prior art. Extensive literature and patent searches are undertaken to provide research leads and to keep from "reinventing the wheel" and infringing on someone else's patent. The scientists and technologists are qualified to conduct computer-assisted library searches. This process usually uncovers 80-90% of the relevant information. The remainder is very much harder to get and requires the help of professional library search staff with scientific backgrounds. Along with literature searching, the team begins synthesis of new compounds. These are screened by use of techniques such as microflotation or filtration in a Buchner funnel. The scientists are looking for the direction of response as they modify structural features . Inevitably, a large number of candidates reach the next stage, a laboratory bench test. At this point it is possible to set up a research plan and use project management techniques to monitor progress. The bench tests are conducted in larger equipment, usually requiring 100-1000 grams of test substrate. Typical laboratory flotation tests are run in Denver or Wemco cells.

This report focuses on the procedures required to review, prepare specifications, bid, and purchase a fully integrated computer system for utilization by engineering personnel in all phases of mine engineering. The presentation is based on the experiences encountered in 1984 in procuring an engineering computer system at The North American Coal Corporation's Western Divi- sion. A two-phase report detailing the purchasing process and subsequent utilization of the engineering computer system will be given. Special detail is also provided on the final system hardware and software setup.
