Geotechnical investigations for the Mid-City Extension of the Los Angeles Metro revealed high concentrations of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas as well as methane. Testing techniques employed to determine the extent of gasses, and to identify potential treatment measures, included gas sampling with cone penetrometers and soil-gas extraction with air injection testing. A gas reservoir model was developed to predict inflows into excavations. Other studies included a hazard evaluation and a general data search for other H2S occurrences and geologic conditions that could facilitate the accumulation of H2S. The paper describes the investigations and proposed design and construction alternatives.

INTRODUCTION In the region of Zurich several of the Swiss Interstate Highways meet and have to be linked to form a continuous network. The subalpine glacial topography with hills, ridges and lakes requires the construction of many tunnels (Figure 1). The Milchbuck Tunnel forms part of the inner arterial highway system of the city of Zurich. It passes underneath the ridge separating the Limmat and Glatt valleys. In its final configuration the tunnel will consist of two parallel three-lane tunnels (Figure 2). For the time being only one tunnel is constructed. This tunnel will be operated with two outbound (climbing) lanes and a single inbound (descending) lane (Figure 3). The owner, the Canton of Zurich, awarded the contract for the construction to a joint venture with the following three contractors: Locher & Cie AG (leader), Prader AG, A. Brunner's Erben, all located in Zurich. The actual freezing was performed by subcontractor Philipp Holzmann AG, Mannheim, West Germany. Electrowatt Engineering Services Ltd, Zurich, was design engineer and performed the construction supervision.

Formally, a mathematical model could be defined as: A set of equations whose solution will approximate the response of a physical process or system to a set of stimuli which appear as parameters in the equations. The purpose of a mathematical model is to permit the rationalization of experience to proceed by simulation rather than by physical experimentation. In the application of digital computer control to an industrial process, the mathematical model of the process (subsequently called the process model) is needed to calculate the present process performance from the measured variables and to predict the response of the process to a control change. Functionally, the cardinal element in process model development is a concise set of control objectives. These, besides implicitly defining the boundaries of the system to be modeled, will determine the accuracy demanded of the model its nature: dynamic or steady-state, and so forth, The objectives should explicitly define what process efficiencies, production rates, qualities are to lie within the scope of the computer control project, thereby providing a basis for simplifying assumptions in the development of the model. This requirement, a limited set of control objectives, is so often disregarded in formulating industrial control problems that its repetition can scarcely be avoided.

Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy carried out in real time has been applied to identify surface species formed during gold leaching in chloride and thiosulfate media. Chloride ion is adsorbed prior to the gold dissolution potential, but its coverage is significantly diminished at the beginning of leaching. A gold chloride band is again observed when dissolution is rapid, together with bands characteristic of AuC14- ions in solution. With thiosulfate, a thin gold sulfide layer is formed slowly in the potential region where leaching occurs. At higher potentials, thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfur and sulfate, both products being identified by Raman spectroscopy.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. 1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4). 1 - INTRODUCTION The Canadian Shield is well known as being among the older exposed areas of the earth's surface. Except for local zones, its extent from the Arctic to central North America is characterized by strong and durable crystalline rocks. It is generally regarded as highly competent for tunnelling and underground excavation and, as a result, many openings are excavated in it with minimal temporary support. If hydraulic efficiency is not a factor, tunnels do not usually require continuous concrete linings. A high percentage of the crystalline rocks of the Shield are of metamorphic origin and as such one of the dominant characteristics is their foliation. Zones of sheared or faulted rock are common in the Canadian Shield, particularly in association with foliation. These zones may be created during the late stages of the metamorphic process, leaving shear zones as an integral feature of foliated rock. As foliation is a preferred direction of weakness, deformation and rupture during subsequent tectonism may also create parallel shear zones. These "foliation shear zones", as described by Deere (1973), are an adverse feature of the otherwise durable rocks of the Canadian Shield. The zones may range from faults of major proportions to seams only a fraction of an inch thick. If fault gouge or alteration products exist in the zone the strength of the rock mass may be great1y reduced. As foliation is usually continuous, large unstable wedges of rock may be created if the opening is subparallel to the foliation. The effect on the construction of underground openings in terms of excavations, support and scheduling can be significant.

This paper describes a graphical mini computer system called MPASS 2 (Mine Performance Analysis/Simulation) which has been designed to conduct analysis of underground room-and-pillar mining operations using both conventional and continuous mining methods. Dynamic, graphic displays of mine face machine activities are presented on the CRT screen to provide extensive visibility into underground mining activities. MPASS 2 consists of: an interactive inputting system that graphically creates a room-and-pillar mine and describes the mine when production is initiated; a time-step simulator that produces statistical summaries of shift activities and uses CRT screen graphics for accelerated-time display of machine activities and delays; a statistical analysis subsystem for analyzing mine performance data; an industrial engineering system that permits users to enter actual machine activity statistics and replay mine operations on the CRT screen; and a data management system to store historical performance information on mine characteristics and operations. MPASS 2 operates on a Hewlett-Packard 9845B mini computer with 450 K bytes of extended memory, and is written in H-P BASIC. It has been installed at Freeman-United Coal Mining Company in West Frankfort, Illinois and at the U. S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center. Applications include production system simulation, industrial engineering analysis, production scheduling, new equipment evaluations, and training.

High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

The Tripoli deposits in the southwest corner of Missouri In Newton County and the northeast corner of Oklahoma in Ottawa County, located in the vicinity of Seneca, Missouri, contains an unusual and peculiar form of silica which has not been found any other place in the world. Its outstanding characteristic is the physical structure of the individual particle, The particle structure of the Missouri-Oklahoma type Tripoli accounts for its market. It is a soft, friable, porous, double-refracting silica of the chalcedony variety, The particle is porous, has a fibrous structure, no sharp edges or comers, ad an average size of less than .01 millimeter, It varies from 90 to 98 per cent Si02 with less than 1 per cent free silica in the form of quartz, 24; has ignition loss of 1 per cent and fractional percentages of iron, alumina, lime, etc.

The pressure system of ventilation with large diameter bore holes has been very effective in the ventilation of two gaseous mines, the Olga No. 1 and No. 2 Mines in McDowell County, West Virginia. The No. 4 Pocahontas Coal Seam on the Olga property lies 580 feet below the valleys. The seam is very gaseous as well as dry and dusty, which makes good ventilation all the more essential. Irregular and often extensive areas of the coal seam have been replaced with impervious shales and sandstones in "Fault" or "Want" areas. The replacement materials have sealed the methane in the coal seam and thus increased the quantity of gas that must be handled as mining is done. Often the No. 5 Pocahontas Seam comes down to meet the No. 4 Seam at the Faults and considerable methane is sometimes released from the upper seam. The factors mentioned, together with the irregular and unpredictable lateral shape' of the faults, result in long narrow stringers of coal that are very gaseous and difficult to mine. So far as the Olga Coal Company is concerned, the most effective ventilation under the conditions outlined has been the use of large diameter bore holes with a pressure ventilation system. The ventilation of a mine can be accomplished in two fundamental ways. The mine atmosphere maybe reduced below atmospheric pressure by an exhaust fan; or it may be raised above atmospheric pressure by a pressure fan. In either case, the coursing of the air is so planned as to have the haulage and traveling ways on intake air. While the majority of the coal mines in the United States, no doubt, use the exhaust system of ventilation, there are several advantages of the pressure system which are extremely beneficial.

Determination of the final pit limits of an open pit copper mine is a problem that has far reaching effects on the life, profitability and operation of a mine. The solution to this problem requires that all of the significant variables affecting the final pit limits be considered together with corporate objectives as the guiding principle. This paper discusses the use of these variables and how they should be applied to plan the future of a mine. The objectives of a final pit plan; are determination of the extent and location of ore reserves, the allowable stripping to be accomplished to uncover the ore, the final pit surface intercept, final pit topography and the contained metal values in both ore and waste. The objectives of the plan must be consistent with corporate objectives as they pertain to profit, future investment in the mine, return on investment, alternative investments, conservation and perpetuation of the corporate entity. The subject will be treated in three parts: economic considerations, effect of leaching and pit design technique. At the outset, it is assumed; that the extent of and metal values in the mineralized area to be considered have been reasonably defined by development drilling and sampling.

Self-supporting, open stoping underground mining methods are some of the earliest, starting with the prehistoric flint mines of Europe and the Egyptian gold mines of Nubia in the time of the pharaohs. When the early miner created an opening, it had to be inherently stable and self-supporting to enable him to continue. Therefore, as mining progressed beyond simple gophering, self-supported open stoping methods were devised to meet the needs of individual ore bodies. Timber for support appears in mines as early as 1000 BC, but this was for no more than local ground control. The ingenuity of mining engineers through history has so refined open stoping methods that today they produce more tonnage than any other mining system. Self-supported open stoping finds its application in moderate to strong rocks that exhibit little jointing or fiagmentation. Good back, hanging wall, and footwall conditions that require no more than incidental support are an essential part of these mining methods. Open stoping methods find applications in all inclinations of ore body from flat to vertical, and where ore movement may be either mechanical or under the influence of gravity. Table 18.0.1 demonstrates the range of ore bodies suitable for open stoping, with particular reference to their dip and the deposit thickness. Most of the flat-dipping applications use ore pillars for overall support and ground control that may be recovered under some conditions after completion of normal stoping practices. In steeper ore bodies, rib, crown, and sill pillars used to block out the ore may be recovered subsequent to the completion of stoping. Open stopes are frequently filled to facilitate pillar recovery. Two of the methods, vertical crater retreat (VCR) and shrinkage stoping, utilize fragmented ore for temporary support in the stopes. In these two cases, the stope is not strictly open until after drawdown.

In the summer of 1957,9 the University of California sponsored a World Conference on Prestressed Concrete in San Francisco to which were invited a number of Soviet engineers. While attending the conference, these engineers in turn asked the University to form a delegation of American engineers to visit the Soviet Union the following year for the purpose of studying Soviet advances in concrete technology. A six man delegation was formed, and the dates of the Russian tour fixed for May 10th through May 21st, 1958. Before arriving in the Soviet Union, the American Delegation attended the Third International Congress on Prestressed Concrete in Berlin. While there, we noticed that the delegation from the U. S. S. R. used displays and showed motion pictures of many construction projects which we later were shown in Moscow. Our delegation left East Berlin by Russian aircraft on May 11th, and arrived in Moscow that afternoon. We were met by our Russian engineer hosts from The Academy of Construction' and Architecture who made all subsequent arrangements for our itinerary. This Academy has no counterpart in the United States. It. does 40 per cent of all engineering-and scientific work in the building construction field and coordinates 60 per cent of that done by other Soviet agencies. Due to the prestige of the Academy in Russian affairs, our delegation was able to obtain a surprisingly broad picture of construction activities in Moscow and Leningrad in just ten days time

Fluorescence, radioluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence in TLD 100 and 700 are discussed and compared. The energy budget in thermoluminescent material is presented in general terms. Results of measurements of radioluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence in LiF:Mg irradiated with [a] radiation, using simple facilities, are presented. The calculated energy budget in the exposed chips using [a] radiation is compared to published data using [y] irradiation.

Copper and nickel are extracted from their elemental state, complex sulfides, ores, and other materials such as scrap by leaching them with a solution containing halogen salts - bromine/bromide, and/or iodide/iodine, oxygen and sodium or potassium nitrate. This US patented process is extremely effective yielding 98% recovery in15 minutes for the treatment of chalcopyrite and pentlandite in an autoclave at a temperature of 100°C - 150°C.
