Years ago, personal computers (PC) were pricey devices destined for who knows where in the process industry. Now their use runs the gamut from low end data acquisition systems to high performance windows into the process area. Their applications range from CAD, CAM, CIM, and CAE to factory floor scheduling, process planning QC, facility management, cell control, and publishing. This discussion traces the evolution of a zinc plant's control automation program beginning with a PC as an operator interface and migrating to higher level work stations. Included in this paper will be a discussion of an Open Industrial System and the role PCs have played in this facility.

From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

Model enhanced Expert control has been implemented at the Newmont Lone Tree mill grinding plant as well as rule based Expert control for flotation and thickening circuits. The project has been successful in producing benefits but more importantly has contributed to an ongoing effort for continuous process improvement. This paper discusses how the control at Lone Tree has evolved and the part that Expert control has played in the overall improvements made. Specific examples of how the advanced control has integrated with instrumentation and stabilizing control are given and illustrations of how it has been effective in defining limitations and bottlenecks in the process or process control areas are provided.

The decade of the 1990s promises to be one of increasing internationalization for domestic minerals producers as they scramble to enhance relative positions in highly competitive, international minerals markets. This "international mining rush" is fueled by developing countries seeking international investment capital to explore for, develop and exploit sizable mineral endowments in an attempt to support the increasingly popular, but expensive, wave of democracy and selfdetermination sweeping the world. This "fuel" typically takes the form of revised mining codes and, often, lucrative investment incentives. These incentives include favorable tax rates, royalty provisions, relaxation of import/ export constraints, depreciation schedules, profit repatriation and other variables that can positively impact mineral investment decision making. Concomitantly, in their attempts to address real and perceived short- and long-term woes associated with enhancing competitive positions internationally, many domestic explorers and producers are attracted to the prospect of finding high-grade deposits in relatively virgin areas. Combined with the investment incentives provided by foreign governments, these high-grade deposits promise lucrative potential returns from projects having short payback periods. Classic examples of this mutual desire to intensify international mining efforts by domestic producers are illustrated by activity levels in countries like Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela in Latin America and, more recently, in Eastern Europe and select locations in the former Soviet Union. As US corporations scurry to send fact-finding, technical, evaluation and financial teams to these presently popular locations, one area of the world has received little attention - Subsaharan Africa. Specifically, the country of Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) deserves more attention than it appears to be receiving from North American mining companies.

Mexico City's growth has encourage development of underworks to meet drainage and transport requirements. Deep Drainage System has been constructed through a complex tunnel network, 108 km in total, varying from 30 to 12 m in depth and 6.24 or 4.00 m in diameter. Wide range of stability conditions presented in soils has forced the use of several tunnelling methods, going from the manual procedure by the use of pneumatic tools, to slurry shields, or open face shields, with the aid of or without compressed air. For transport, subway tunnels have been excavated in very compact silty sands, 9.15 and 9.51 m in diameter, with the use of open shields one of which was designed by Mexican engineers as a prototype machine. This paper tries to describe evolution of tunnelling methods used in Mexico City during last 20 years.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT While Holmes & Narver is better known in other fields, the company has been active in many phases of underground excavation for over twenty years. In the 1950's, H&N participated in design and construction of nearly twenty miles of waste disposal tunnels in Southern California. As Architect-Engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission, we had design and management responsibility for many miles of tunnels and for thousands of feet of exploration and big hole drilling, from coast to coast in the States, and for gas well completions and exploration drilling for the Navy and the National Science Foundation from Pt. Barrow to Byrd Station in Antarctica. In my ten years with the company, we contributed to the development of big hole drilling techniques at a number of sites and analyzed the capability of boring machines for many of the tunnel projects. A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the Nevada database with a special emphasis on Nevada underground gold mines.

Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

For centuries tunnellers have made use of the experience of miners. In West German coalmining tunnellers have returned the impulses in recent years by giving the miners valuable stimuli with the result that a technology has evolved which benefits drill and blast heading, opens the door to TBM heading and has developed special measures for difficult strata conditions in deep coal mines. WHAT DO THESE ROCK HEADINGS LOOK LIKE? The main roadways dealt with in this paper have crosssections of 20 to 40 m2, big enough to allow the massive airflows needed to aircondition the mines. Because of the difficult strata conditions they have to be supported: in shotfired headings mainly with multi-element arches, in TBM headings with rings of 6 to 6.5 m diameter. In West German coalmining the majority of rock headings are blasted. The proportion of rock headings driven by TBM was 11 % in 1980 and 16 % in 1981, a rising trend expected to continue. Drill and blast headings Drill and blast headings are normally equipped with two or three-boom electro-hydraulic jumbos, electro-hydraulic crawler-mounted loaders with 1.2 m3 shovel capacity, a movable working platform and both chain and belt conveyors for dirt clearance to the minecar loading point. Fans and air-condition plant complete the equipment. Spacing between arches is usually 0.8 m. Investment for this type of mechanisation works out at around 1.3 m DM.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. Two- and three-dimensional groundwater flow models for dewatering in an opencast mine are presented. The models focus on solving special problems using numerical simulations of the opencast mine. These special problems include the drying up of the aquifer, the movement of the model boundary and the prediction of the residual head. These models are used to describe the decline of groumdwater levels in the Yuanbaoshan Opencast Coal Mine and its neighboring area during the drainage period. The simulated values agree very well with the field data. There have been several successful examples of numerical simulation for predicting the mine dewatering rate in an opencast mine. However, The hydrogeological conditions for the Yuanbaoshan Opencast Coal Mine are rather complex, and the total average flow rate is very high at 4.676 x 105 m3/d (1.65 x 107 cu ft/day). In this paper, a two-dimensional groundwater flow model in a large area is developed to solve the problems mentioned above by simulating regional drawdowns of the groundwater level during the drainage period, and a three-dimensional flow model is developed to simulate the residual head near the open-pit bench.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the preparation of high-quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition for the design of polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed. Based on this review it is clear that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces require further systematic study. Specifically, efforts should be made to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral-filler surfaces in greater detail. Also, the effects of mineral-surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena need specific investigation. It is expected that an improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing chemical explosive excavation as a construction technique for use on Civil Works projects. Large chemical charges are being used in multiple charge arrays in a variety of media and topographic situations to achieve actual construction projects. The target is the development of chemical and nuclear explosive excavation as an accepted cost-competitive construction technique. Military research using explosive excavation is also being conducted to apply this technique to military engineering for combat purposes and to military construction. The information gained from both the civil and military research is integrated into the overall development of explosive excavation. This research and development work is being conducted under the auspices of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Explosive Excavation Research Laboratory (EERL) located at Livermore, California. This organization was formed in 1962 as the Nuclear Cratering Group (NCG) to carry out the Corps of Engineers (OCE) portion of a joint agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to develop nuclear explosives for construction purposes. The AEC, through the Plowshare Division of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at Livermore, California, has been responsible for developing nuclear explosives, conducting nuclear cratering experiments, developing nuclear safety information, and developing methods for predicting the shape of the craters. One possible alternative for the disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is to use it as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation in stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48% and the peak stress could be decreased by about 58%. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to the stability of backfilled highwall adits.

A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. It makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery data to gravity recoverable gold (GRG) to predict overall recovery. The methodology is designed for gravity circuits located in the circulating load of secondary grinding mills. Gold liberation is estimated by processing a sample of representative ore with a laboratory Knelson Concentrator (LKC) in three successive steps, each at a finer grind than the previous one. Breakage behaviour is represented by a matrix H, which redistributes GRG in the feed of the secondary mill in the various size classes of its discharge. Provision is also made to account for gold overgrinding, which decreases the overall amount of GRG. Classification, pre-concentration and recovery data are estimated from plant performance, and are represented by the diagonal matrices C, P and R. The methodology is demonstrated with case studies of greenfield, retrofit and optimization applications.

Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environmentally unacceptable. Bioreductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high extractions of silver and molybdenum. When baseline, three-day, cyanide bottle-roll tests were conducted on manganiferous-oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bioreduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A followup cyanide bottle-roll test yielded an additional 8.5 % silver dissolution, for a total extraction of 94.5%. Baseline, three-day, acid bottle-roll tests of the iron-oxide molybdenum ore Yielded 1.8% molybdenum. However, bioreduction solubilized 93.3% of the molybdenum into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% molybdenum was solubilized during the followup acid bottle-roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bioreductive bacteria resulted in higher extractions of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and molybdenum was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

This paper describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries. More detail can be found in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 9235 (Gallagher et al. 1990).

Technological innovation in the minerals industry must be driven by the need to improve performance according to social, as well as environmental, safety, efficiency and production criteria. This paper outlines the possibilities and rationale for incorporating constructive technology assessment into technology research and development within the CSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship (MDU). The paper develops a process of Social License in Design that attempts to address the future social challenges and opportunities of a technology during development by utilising forecasting techniques and accounting for the perspectives and values of decision makers and likely stakeholders. Interviews with senior technologists and social scientists within MDU reveal the institutional context into which the Social License in Design process is to be situated and highlight key factors that may inhibit or enhance its uptake.
