But she said, "Doug, don't worry. I've asked Mary Korpi to present the paper. We're both short, blond, and wear glasses. Nobody will know." [laughter] Mary, I caught it right away. You ladies can't fool us. Debbie, who wrote the paper, has spent almost her entire career in operations. She is currently metallurgical manager of Rayrock Mines in Valmy, Nevada. Mary Korpi is also a real operator (that doesn't sound right). She has been responsible for a number of operating areas at Newmont's Nevada operations, and she is currently taking a break from operations as manager of public relations/employee communications for Newmont Gold in Carlin. MARY KORPI: They told us this year at Newmont that we were going to have to work twice as hard. I had no idea it meant I would have to work for another company, too. Over the years, and many times in association with work for mid- to small-size mining companies, there have been two areas that seem to have been the focus of cost savings when looking at new facilities or new processes.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension to Woolwich Arsenal provides a much-needed public transport link to this area of London. The project includes construction of 5.3mID running tunnels under the River Thames, in ground conditions that proved challenging for the Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project also includes cut and cover tunnel approaches, an underground station, and an emergency shaft on the bank of the river. Major challenges have included tunneling under sensitive infrastructure, and working adjacent to existing operational railways at Woolwich Arsenal. This paper will describe the design and construction of the project and how these challenges were overcome.

The condition-based monitoring system is an important innovation for reducing the downtime of costly, heavy earth- moving machinery (HEMM). Vibration severity measurements were made on the HEMM located at the Gevra Project, the largest coal opencast project in India. Whenever the vibration severity levels exceeded the permissible limits, necessary actions were taken to replace the defective parts of the ma- chine. The systematic vibration monitoring of 120-t (132-st) dumpers, followed by corrective measures led to a substantial increase in component life (8.18% for an 445E Dressor and 28.44% for an MK-30 Unit Rig). The associated costs (including spareparts) were reduced by 21.55% and 25.74%, respectively. Because of the reduced downtime, savings for these two dumpers over the period from March 26 to June 25,1998, were of the order of Rs.26.47 (US$0.649) million.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

The phosphate fertilizer industry is at present based mainly on the use of sulfuric acid. This technology results in the generation of large amounts of radioactive gypsum that represents disposal and environmental problems. Also it involves the use of expensive reactors for acidification that necessitates the frequent replacing the damaged agitators. Applying hydrometallurgical techniques such as in-situ, heap, or vat leaching to phosphate processing could solve these problems. In this case, however, nitric acid must be used and dicalcium phosphate (40% P2O5) may be obtained as a final product. It is insoluble in water but soluble in citric acid and is an excellent fertilizer. This technology does not interfere with uranium recovery if desired. In addition it permits the recovery of rare earths which are otherwise lost in the gypsum.

The United States Antarctic Program (USAP), through its principal support contractor Raytheon Polar Services Co. (RPSC), has recently completed a three-year project comprising nearly 936 m (3,071 ft) of undersnow utility tunnels at Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole, Antarctica. The tunnel serves the new station facilities that are currently under construction. It houses the piping that conveys fresh water from current and future water well sites, as well as waste water to repositories in abandoned wells. The undersnow tunnels permit year-round access for system operations and maintenance. The network of tunnels is entirely unlined and unsupported. And, for the most part, it maintains a rectangular cross section of 1.8-m-wide x 3-m-high (6 x 10 ft).The tunnel runs from 6 to 14 m (18 to 45 ft) below the surface. Eight 1-m- (3.3-ft-) diam raises bored from the surface serve the network as emergency escapeways.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

The Manapouri Power Station is an underground hydro-electric station located in the South Island of New Zealand, and was constructed in the 1960s. Between 1997and 2002, a second 10m diameter tailrace tunnel was constructed to increase the out-put and to improve the overall hydraulic efficiency and output of the station. A critical economic and project approval consideration for the second tunnel was the outage time required for the breakthrough into the power station. The power station is in part dedicated to providing power to an aluminum smelter with the balance to the National Grid, and apart from the physical problems associated with providing an alter-native power supply to the smelter, the loss of generation revenue and supply risk were significant issues. Innovative planning reduced the planned outage time from several months to21 days, and the breakthrough was eventually achieved in 11 days as a result of additional value engineering measures implemented during construction. This paper describes the engineering optimization that took place during the planning stages of the project and later during construction, as well as describing the construction methodology used.

CORESafety ‘One of the best’Launched by NMA in 2011 and moving forward ever since, CORESafety is driving continuous improvement in safety and health performance among participating industry companies by shifting from a command-andcontrol regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model (Fig. 1).Considered an exemplary safety and health management system, NMA’s CORESafety system helps mining operators change their approach to safety and health management by enhancing the safety and health culture throughout their organizations. Although it is challenging to consistently and completely control all the factors and variables occurring in daily mining operations, experience has shown that applying systematic controls to as many variables as possible is the most successful approach for improvement in mining safety and health.When embarking upon the development of the CORESafety framework, NMA’s leadership set an ambitious goal to eliminate fatalities and reduce the injury rate 50 percent in five years, or the “0-50-5” goal. While the goal has not been met yet, the steady progress has been extraordinary with fatalities among participating companies dropping 45 percent during the period 2011-2015 (Fig. 2). Data also demonstrate that, as participating companies increase their level of implementation, total injury rates have also declined (Fig. 3).In a September 2015 interview with NMA, Penn State University mining engineering Professor Jeffrey Kohler praised CORESafety as “an inspired and timely program that brings together key elements to achieve safety and health goals.”"

"This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. Use of design/build for new starts was unheard of and most of the projects were smaller in nature in order to allow the methodology to be tested. The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

The application and use of steel fibre reinforced concrete in precast tunnel lining design is a growing trend due to its advantages in performance over plain concrete, and ease of manufacture compared to traditionally reinforced concrete. However, the design process and performance characteristics of the material are poorly served by current codes and standards. This paper provides some basic design guidance for segmental linings, and compares the material properties for the different material options. A typical example is considered to compare the possible results of lining arrangement and thicknesses for a plain, reinforced, and fibre reinforced design solution.
