Kaolin clays from five different commercial deposits in Georgia were studied to understand the variations of zeta potential and related fundamental properties. The results suggest that higher negative zeta potential is related to exchangeable or soluble calcium ions in the clays.

In the selective flocculation process, polymers with specific functional groups can yield highly selective adsorption and, therefore, high separation efficiency. Selectivity in polymer adsorption may also be attained by specific additives that inhibit the adsorption of the flocculant on some solid surfaces but not on others. Generally, these additives have a different chemical nature than the flocculant. In this study, the lower molecular weight fraction of the flocculant was successfully evaluated as a site blocking agent, leading to higher separation efficiency than obtained otherwise.

Based on the criteria of maximum net present value per ton of reserves and on the optimum matching of some other essential parameters, a comprehensive optimization model of surface-mine production rate is developed using system- engineering approaches and using the theory of economy of scale. The Mine Injury Reporting System (MIRS) allows users to access accident and production data prepared by the Health and Safety Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the US Department of Labor for any particular state and to generate a simple, yet informative, report.

Earthquakes, underground impact pressures and rock bursts all produce acoustic emissions. The rate of these emissions can be used to describe rock instability. In this study, it was found that acoustic-emission rates obtained by simulating a twin sample (rock-rock) model could be used to indicate the acoustic-emission-rate characteristics during rock instability. A computer simulation and two case studies support this conclusion.

Preliminary test results at Occidental Research Corp.’s Irvine, CA, research facility indicate the viability of a new induced fluorescent sorting technique for preconcentration of limestone, coal, and oil shale. The patented “Oxylore”* process is a preconcentration stage that takes advantage of selective surface chemistry to label either ore or gangue particles with a fluorescent coating that can be detected by activation with ultraviolet light. The technology was originally developed by Ted Matthews (SME-AIME Fall Meeting, 1974, Preprint 74-B-328) and was acquired by Occidental in 1977. The firm has continued development of the process since its acquisition.

Limestone can be used effectively in treating acid mine water. Aside from a lower cost than for other treatment agents, limestone has the advantages of easy storage and effectiveness even when impure and in slack sizes. Limestone incorporated into waste piles in layers or as riprap can inhibit acid formation; limestone rubble packed in a mine entry offers promise in formation of a low-cost autogenous resilient seal.

The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned at Cyprus Sierrita in July 1995. This grinding roll is the world's biggest operating unit. It has a roll diameter of 2.4 meters and a face width of 1.4 meters. It is driven by two, 2250 KW (3,000 HP) motors. This paper will discuss the development of the grinding roll at Cyprus Sierrita and what it has done for comminution of Sierrita ore. Maintenance and operating performance will be discussed as well as testwork including size reduction, power input, work index, and throughput.

The metallurgical processes that are frequently applied today use strong solutions and are of alkaline, acidic, or organic nature. These play a very important part in recovery of values from many ores. These solutions are of such a chemical nature that they are generally corrosive, flammable, and contaminating. In most cases, they are highly dangerous to the environment. Within the extractive metallurgical industry, it is also very common to have to deal with the handling of contaminating solutions with a high content of cyanide, arsenic, mercury, lead, copper kerosene, acid and many other components whose temporary or permanent confinement within the process must be adequate and absolute.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. This paper presents the construction of the ventilation shaft for the single-tube, doublelane Kramer tunnel. The project is located in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million incl. VAT (US-Dollar 201 million), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for singletube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. For tunnel ventilation, an intermediate shaft has been designed with a depth of approximately 90 m (295 feet) and an inner diameter of 4.5 m (14.8 feet). All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The geological and hydrogeological conditions, the change in the profile (from round to square geometry), and also the shaft being located at a high elevation presented a demanding technical and logistical challenge. The site arrangement with the pit bank was located in a cut, the slopes of which had to be stabilized with shotcrete and soil nails. This excavation was carried out from the fall of 2020 to the beginning of 2021 because construction operations had to be completed outside the nesting period of protected birds.

In this paper, the author will discuss the need for and then explain the new CEMA standard for engineering of impact cradles. Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use feedstocks with higher Ti02 content and lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the world's Ti02 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37% to 54% Ti02. An industry growth rate of 25% in the next 10 years, combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower mining grades for rutile (95% P02) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55% to 90% P02), means that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite.

In Australia and America, encroachment by conflicting land uses, zoning restrictions, and the "not in my backyard" syndrome make it increasingly difficult to access high-quality aggregate resources located near the market areas. Attempts by government agencies in America to protect aggregate resources for future development have met with varying degrees of success. The State of Queensland, Australia, designates aggregate resource areas as Key Resource Areas, which protect the resource and the routes to transport the resource, provide a separation area from incompatible land uses, and indicate the likelihood that the area is free from conflicting social or environmental issues.
