Fly ash is a by-product generated by the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. Its disposal is a major environmental concern for these power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, a substantial quantity remains unutilized. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in the micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in the micropelletization process without affecting the quality of the micropellets. The mechanisms of both the binders are discussed. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly-ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. Silica and alumina are the major constituents present in fly ash along with lime. In the presence of water, the alumino-silicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bonds, which hold the particles together. Use of fly ash as alternative binder for bentonite has cost benefits besides providing a better utilization option for fly ash.

The Doe Run Company (Doe Run), a global supplier of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrates, and lead metal alloys, installed an enterprise expert control system— termed as Digital One—on the company’s Pb, Cu and Zn circuits at its Buick Mill in December 2022. Digital One was developed with Metso and deploys Metso’s product, VisioFroth™. This automated system is now running and optimizing the flotation processes for all three circuits (Pb, Zn and Cu), all plant air and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC). In addition, Digital One also controls a second, newly built, modern flotation reagent system. Digital One also paves the way for automation and expert control of the entire mill, integrating grinding, thickening and filtration. Digital One is digitally immersed in a universal distributed control system (DCS); therefore, today’s mineral processing plants may be upgraded to it or designed around it. This presentation will explore the plant design and operation of this technology at the Doe Run Buick Mill.

This paper discusses the longwalling practices used at the San. Francisco Mine of Compania Minera Autlan in Mexico, in. the mining of a sedimentary, manganese deposit. Bethlehem. Steel Company is a part owner of this property. The San. Francisco Mine is located approximately 580 miles west of Mexico City, on the outskirts of the town of Autlan, in the State of Jalisco. The ore is shipped from the port of Manzanillo 120 miles southwest of Autlan. The mining method is a variation of the longwall retreat system, using friction. props that, until recently, had been used only in coal mining operations of Europe and the United States. However, due to the structure of the ore body and the modified longwall system that is practiced, there exists some unusual variations, such as: .1) friction props set by a mechanical two-step lifting device, 2) drilling and blasting, against the friction props, 3) a highly fractured and undulating, volcanic tuff roof; 4) displacement faults-up to 5 meters, and 5) a relatively stable, irregular floor.

This paper describes the importance of mine ventilation and air conditioning in the operation of a nuclear waste repository. It discusses the impact of ventilation on determining the number and size of shafts and access drifts to and within a repository horizon. The paper also describes the need to maintain separate ventilation systems for waste emplacement and construction operations. The requirement to have filtration capabilities for exhaust air from waste emplacement areas is discussed. Because radioactive high level waste will induce high temperatures in the emplacement drifts, the ability to cool an emplacement drift for re-entry requirements is important. The paper discusses strategies to cool an emplacement drift and the possibility of using continuous airflow to control temperatures in these drifts.

Surface subsidence process due to underground coal mining often has the potential to cause problems to buried pipelines. In this paper, a technique for assessing the stress level on a subsidence-affected pipeline is introduced. The main contributors for the stresses on the pipelines are identified. Mitigation techniques for reducing the stress on the pipeline have been proposed and successfully tested.

The mining industry is under immense pressure to not only meet increasing demand for minerals, but to do so in an environmentally safe and sustainable manner. Growth in electric vehicles, battery storage, renewable energy infrastructure and data centers to power artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an unprecedented demand for minerals such as copper, lithium, rare earth elements and others. The need for these minerals for national defense has only increased the pressure on the mining industry. Increased geopolitical tensions between the United States, China and Russia has added a sense of urgency as supply chains have become a focal point for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Defense (DOD) and other government agencies. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that copper demand is expected to grow by 50 percent by 2040 while demand for lithium could increase eight-fold by 2040 and demand for nickel and cobalt could double. The challenges to meet the increased demand include technological, workforce, exploration and environmental issues. From Feb. 22-26, the global mining industry will converge on Salt Lake City, UT for the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo where these challenges and others will be addressed by some of the leading minds in the industry. Aluminosilicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash, in presence of water, undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bond which holds the particles together. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in micropelletization without affecting the quality of micropellets.

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

Oklahoma is the only; state in the nation that is currently producing iodine. The iodine is extracted from iodine-rich natural brines being pumped from deep wells drilled into Pennsylvanian sandstones in the Anadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma. Woodward Iodine Corp., started in 1977, was the first plant in the United States built for iodine recovery since the 1930s. At present, three companies are operating four iodine-producing facilities in northwestern Oklahoma. The combined production of these facilities, 1,321,000 kg in 1997, is about 26% of the U.S. annual consumption. Iodine is present in concentrations ranging from less than 100 ppm (parts per million) to as much as 1,560 ppm in brines in various Paleozoic strata in the subsurface of northwestern Oklahoma; these concentrations are exceptionally high, and are well above those of any other known brines in the world. Strata with the highest iodine content in the area (Mississippian limestones) have low permeabilities, and thus would yield only small amounts of brine. On the other hand, the lower Morrow sandstones (Lower Pennsylvanian) have a relatively high permeability and are capable of yielding large quantities of brine that average 300-350 ppm iodine. The Morrow brine reservoir was deposited in shallow-water-marine and intertidal-shelf environments and now is buried 6,000-10,000 ft below the land surface. Production is localized to Morrow channel deposits confined to an Early Pennsylvanian paleovalley that is 1-2 mi wide, is about 70 mi long, and is referred to informally as the "Woodward trench." All three companies are producing iodine-rich brines from Morrow sandstones in three different parts of the Woodward paleovalley, and one of the companies also is extracting iodine from oil-field brines coming from several petroleum reservoirs near Dover, about 80 mi east of Woodward. The basic extraction method employed by Woodward Iodine Corp. was used in Louisiana and California operations in the late 1920s. This method is commonly called the air-stripping process. Lower Morrow brine containing dissolved sodium iodide is pumped to the plant through a series of pipelines, where by-product natural gas is separated and processed. The brine is then acidified and subsequently oxidized with chlorine to convert the iodide to iodine. The iodine is air stripped and reabsorbed with sulfur dioxide and water, converting it to hydriodic acid, or process liquor. The process liquor is then processed, using chlorine once again, to crystallize the iodine as a solid. This is then melted and frozen to form a solid product, which is packaged in 110-lb (50-kg) drums and shipped to end users throughout the world.

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). Rod and ball mills were scaled up on the basis of the Bond Work Index. A two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuit was designed on the basis of pilot plant test results. The Wing Hill Garnet Deposit, located near Rangeley, Maine, forsed through assimilation of Early Paleozoic metasediments by an intrusive Devonian gabbro. The resulting ore body is exceptionally large and high-grade, consisting of 50-70% almandine garnet. Following open-pit quarrying, the ore is trucked to Industrial Garnet Extractives' mill in West Paris for final processing. Two grades of abrasive are produced - a pure, premium grade INDUSTRIAL GARNET and the Lower grade co-product IGE UTILITY GRIT, both of which are available in a variety of sizes. INDUSTRIAL GARNET is marketed world- wide into a diverse marketplace including both loose grain and bonded applications.

The preparation of aggregates is a form of mineral processing which has been taken for granted for many years, mostly because of its lack of glamour when compared to the winning of metallic minerals from their ores. Many of the processes and equipment now used in the metallic mineral processing industries originated in the more prosaic preparation of aggregates. 'Their adaptation to metallurgical processes has led to developments both in their design, and in their use. Modern practice, has been so exacting in its demands that, in many cases, this improved technology is finding new applications in the very industry in which it originated the mineral aggregate industry, The low cost requirements, large tonnage capacities and complex specifications which govern the acceptability of its products have node modern aggregate processing a much different art than it was one or two generations ago. The basic conditions which govern the type and quality of mineral aggregates were presented in an addendum to a paper given at the San Francisco Meeting in 1959 by one of the authors.

The 25th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de-Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 10-14, 2001, in Arequipa, Peru. The biennual meeting, sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru), is designed to showcase the Peruvian mining industry and to ?promote progress in the national mining sector.? The convention consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. The technical sessions featured 80 papers selected from more than 200 papers submitted. The well-organized 2001 meeting was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. The meeting was held in conjunction with Exposición Technologica Minera (Extemin), a mining trade exhibition. The2001 Extemin had representatives from more than 400 companies in attendance. In addition to the many Peruvian companies present, the trade exhibition featured pavilions representing the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and Chile. Registration at the 2001 meeting was about 3,300, a conference record. The theme for the 2001 meeting was Mining: Society and Development. Mario Brescia was chairman of the organizing committee. He said in his opening remarks that ?this year?s meeting seeks to emphasize the commitment on the part of the [mining] companies to treat our natural resources responsibly, controlling any adverse impacts and giving priority to group benefits.? Consistent with this theme, many of the technical papers stressed environmental and social responsibility. Many successful examples of environ-mental and social responsibility on the part of the mining industry were presented in the technical sessions.

One of the prime examples of the versatility of the MARCONAFLO system, which is a body of technology comprising the means to handle, store, load, transport, discharge and reclaim mineral commodities in slurry form, is the direct application of this process to leaching ores. The initial approach was to provide a much improved materials handling system for the transport of copper ores; however, an extensive development program, inclusive of prototype and pilot plant tests, has established that a new leaching concept is possible with this system. Data are presented from the leaching operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant utilizing a copper-oxide ore, mainly chrysocolla. This pilot plant was designed to incorporate true countercurrent flow where the ore is actually in motion, as contrary to vat leaching operations, and the ore being successfully leached is fine crushed ore (3/8-inch x o), contrary to agitation leach circuits. Extractions in excess of 85% of the soluble values are common with only 15 hours of retention time in the MARCONAFLO leaching system.

The Government or Jamaica has just completed agreements with four of the five bauxite/alumina companies operating in Jamaica. These companies are Kaiser, Reynolds, Alcoa, and Alcan, and the Agreements came into effect on February 1, 1980. One of the results of these new Agreements is the Acquisition of all company-owned bauxite lands by the Government and the rationalization of bauxite reserves.

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

Effective maintenance planning is vital for coal mining operations, where haul truck fleets directly determine production continuity. This study presents a discrete event simulation (DES) model for evaluating maintenance strategies under multiple failure modes and their interdependencies. The model integrates corrective, periodic preventive, and opportunistic maintenance, dynamically updating equipment lifetimes through probabilistic time-betweenfailure and time-to-repair distributions. Applied to a fivetruck coal haulage fleet over a one-year horizon, results show that periodic preventive maintenance delivers the highest availability (76%) under unconstrained conditions, slightly outperforming corrective-only maintenance (75%). Opportunistic and integrated approaches performed worse (68% and 69%), reflecting redundancy from overlapping interventions. These findings suggest that structured preventive programs provide the most reliable outcomes when costs and resources are not limiting. The DES framework serves as a baseline for future models incorporating cost, spare parts logistics, and workforce availability, supporting robust maintenance planning in coal mining operations.

Selenium-rich metallurgical waste, also known commercially as “crude selenium,” is a byproduct of the copper (Cu) refining process. This by-product, contains ~ 90% selenium (Se), precious metals, platinum group metals (PGMs), and other critical elements. This study investigated the leaching efficiency of Se from the sludge under alkaline conditions using different oxidizing agents to enrich PGMs and precious metals in the leach solid residue. The effectiveness of each oxidizing agent during leaching was assessed and compared. Additionally, Eh-pH diagram for Se was established under specific experimental conditions and utilized to inform process optimization. Key variables, including leaching time, temperature, and oxidant concentration, were evaluated for their impact on the efficiency and the selectivity of the oxidative alkaline leaching process.
