This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

he selection of mill design parameters to suit the applica­tion requirements can result in quite different operating parame­ters for each generic type of application, even though the basic mechanical layout of the mills may remain similar. The selection of the type and size of grinding media is very important to efficient and cost-effective operation, and to ensuring that the milled product achieves the required properties. Accordingly, the grinding media selection is seen as an integral part of the mill design. Consideration of the requirement for classification is important in order to achieve the optimum mill and circuit performance. This can lead to the circuit feed not being classified for a steady feed with minimal slimes and a low size reduction ratio. Feed containing on-size particles would be deslimed by open circuit classification. Closed circuit classification is performed where the feed fluctuates. The rheological characteris­tics of the circuit feed slurry can have an influence on mill performance, and needs to be allowed for. A common misconception frequently encountered is the belief that "a mill is just a mill". This is not the case with stirred types of mills, since the operating parameters selected for the mill can have a large effect on the product characteristics. For example, horizontal shaft high speed stirred mills have a com­pletely different grinding action to vertical shaft low to medium speed stirred mills, which results in large differences between the surface area produced at a given product size (Liddell, 1986). Hence, it can be misleading to apply test results or design procedures obtained from one type of mill to other types for scale-up. The Metprotech stirred mill, as applied in the mining and minerals industries, is a low to medium speed vertical shaft mill. The basic design has been discussed previously (Liddell, 1989). Currently, the largest mills that have been manufactured have an installed power of 400 kW. The largest chamber volume at this power is 6000 litres, containing IO t of grinding media. It is intended that the installed power will increase up to lMW as applications requiring larger sizes arise.

Oil-field brines have been collected and analyzed from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks in the Mississippi Salt Dome Basin, from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks, southwestern Arkansas, and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks, southern Michigan. All of these brines are genetically related to evaporites and appear to be brines expelled from halite-bearing rocks, presumably during compaction. The brines in rocks closest to the halite-bearing rocks are uniformly low in lead and zinc suggesting that the metals in metal-rich brines are not acquired within evaporite sequences. The metals in metal- rich brines in Mississippi and in Russia appear to be derived from red beds and may have been originally associated with ferric iron oxyhydroxides. Reduction of these compounds by migrating hydrocarbons appears to release lead and zinc to the associated brines accompanied by the fomation of authigenic ankerite.

This approach will allow the nation to continue to use low-cost fossil fuel feedstocks during the early decades of the 21st century. The new approach is called Vision 21. The overall goal is to effectively eliminate, at competitive costs, environmental concerns associated with the use of fossil fuels for producing electricity and transportation fuels. The key to productive computer usage is system software integration with full compatibility among individual components. The majority of software developers in our industry are still in the process of perfecting individual components. As a result, exchange and validation of data between disciplines becomes an arduous process. We at Morrison Knudsen Engineers, Inc. (MKE) have integrated an entire system, allowing exploration, geology, modeling, mine planning, and operation modules to work as a single, complete system with direct exchange and validation of data. The importance of integration to both developers and users of today's mining soft- ware is becoming increasingly apparent as we, an industry, move toward growth and enhancement of the technology of ore reserve acquisition, evaluation, and management. It is also important to understand the present state of integration and where it is leading US. Not long ago, another industry passed through the same stages we are now setting up for the mining industry. The stereo industry began with a few individual components, the record player, tape recorder, and radio. People were able to play records, listen to the radio and record conversations and music only through microphones on their tape recorders. Soon, one enterprising individual discovered he could tape sound directly from the radio or record player by capturing audio output from the speaker wires. Interfaces and patch cords were developed, providing a means to transfer audio information between components with not only little loss of sound quality, but also the elimination of back- ground noise. The industry took another step forward with the introduction of "integrated" stereo, where the components were packaged in one cabinet with shared resources. This reduced overall cost which paved the way for better quality. Today's stereos are now so well integrated that many of the components share data and resources from the same manufacturer, designed to work together for almost perfect data transfer between any of the components. The result is better sound, convenience, and reduced cost. This is the ultimate goal for integration. Any system development passes through these same steps on the road to total interaction. Initially, the components are designed, tested, and marketed individually, often by separate companies. As the users become familiar with the components, the need arises for an automatic interface between the components. This is necessary to cut down on error during data transfer and to eliminate the redundant work required to enter results from one component into the next component in the system. As a result, interfaces must then be developed to aid in this data transfer. After data transfer is accomplished, the next step is resource sharing. Resource sharing is careful design and engineering by either cooperative, individual manufacturers or one firm taking on the task to produce a single package product. Design and resource sharing leads to lower overall cost, while still providing component capability with options to grow as the user grows. The mining software industry has been working to develop some very high quality component software and has indeed accomplished this task in every aspect of the mining industry. However, realizing the importance of integration, some companies with limited individual resources have started working together to interface their individual components. Other firms have undertaken the project of developing complete, integrated systems.

A kinetic model for batch leaching of various metals with different lixiviants has been developed. Overall material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated with various types of heterogeneous reactions in place at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances have been identified analytically as well as numerically using a Runge-Kutta method. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using the rotating disc or powders have been discussed. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.

The efficient management of the distribution of goods and services is important throughout the minerals industry. From the scheduling of processing plant operations, to the routing of work crews in mines, to the planning of product development, vast amounts of time, energy, and money are wasted due to poor planning and scheduling. Thus, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating computational algorithms that can be used to minimize the economic losses related to scheduling and allocating resources. Although there is commercial software available for tackling many scheduling problems, there has been little relief provided for solving the difficult traveling salesman with time windows problem (TSTW). The TSTW problem is a "derivative" of the classic traveling salesman problem, and can be used to minimize the distance traveled by vehicles or personnel to visit all points on a tour, with the additional constraint that each point on the tour must be visited within a specified time window. This paper is a survey of published work in which genetic algorithms have been used to efficiently solve the traveling salesman problem and its more difficult derivative, the TSTW problem. A genetic algorithm is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural genetics, and has been used to solve a broad spectrum of engineering optimization problems. Results indicate that the versatility, searching power, and simplicity of genetic algorithms can be used to provide substantial improvement in the area of scheduling and resource allocation.

The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating drum reactor has been studied. The reactor includes horizontal paddles in the inner wall for lifting of the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested in the bioleaching of a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans strain (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at 50% pulp density with the drum operating at 0.5 -1.0 rpm Attempts of bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density in conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows to operate at much higher pulp densities than the conventional stirred tank reactor. This behavior is explained in terms of an improvement of the bacterial activity due to a better control of the attrition of the mineral particles.

Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man's first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today's world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner's side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.

After years of steadily declining employment and production, the U.S. coal industry is having a moment. In 2016, when Donald Trump was running for U.S. President, he cast a spotlight on coal mining in his campaign speeches, promising to end the “War on Coal.” Fast forward to 2025. On the first day of his second term, President Trump signed the National Energy Emergency Act, which emphasizes domestic energy production as a matter of national security and focuses on incentivizing domestic energy resources. Then on April 8, President Trump issued an executive order opening federal land to coal mining to reinvigorate “America’s beautiful clean coal industry.” As the nation seeks to identify reliable solutions to meet its ever-growing energy needs, the administration is going all in on proven, reliable and readily available natural resources, including coal. This means the coal industry is positioned to play a pivotal role in the administration’s stated energy policy, and highwall mining could be an integral factor in helping the industry optimize the extraction of ore to make the most of this moment. The White House noted in a statement that the United States’ “abundance of energy and natural resources … have historically powered our Nation’s economic prosperity” and vowed to remove regulations that have hindered developing these resources — regulations that resulted in job reductions and higher energy costs for U.S. consumers, while weakening national security. “There has been an increase in electricity prices in the United States of over 30 percent in the past four years,” said Rich Nolan, president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association (NMA). “This administration wants to focus on that, inflation and on increasing electricity availability to help lower the price over time by incentivizing energy policy. Coal is definitely a high priority for this administration.” Part of the White House’s strategy is to facilitate investment in coal-fired plants. The shift comes at a time when the reliance of coal-powered energy plants has been waning. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 7.5 GW of electrical capacity from coal-fired plants was retired in 2024, following the retirement of 22.3 GW of electric generating power the two years prior.

The ratio of neutralization potential (NP) to acid production (AP) ratio is often employed for predicting acidic discharges from waste rock dumps. The available NP was evaluated in laboratory studies of limestone dissolution in simulated acidic mine water. The available neutralization potential strongly depended on the particle size. Using limestone particles of 114" (6.4 mm) or greater, less than 20% of the total neutralization potential was exhausted at the onset of acid conditions. Apparently, the dissolution of limestone became mass transfer limited. Under mass transfer limitations, the rate of pyrite oxidation may exceed the rate of neutralization by buffering minerals. The implications concerning the controls on limestone dissolution were examined using a geochemical predictive model for sulphide mineral oxidation in waste rock. The results have shown that in case of heterogeneous waste rock piles the NP/AP ratio is a reliable indicator for short-tam predictions only. Kinetic data on the depletion rate of the neutralizing minerals and geochemical modelling suggest that waste rock environments with NP/AP ratios as high as 5.0 may turn acidic in the long term.

The development of a design equation for, and the testing of, a constant- flow airlift pump IS described. The predictions of the new airlift model agree with the results of experiments carried out using riser diameters between 0.025 and 0.300 m, submergence depths between 5 and 10 m, suspension densities between 1000 and 1650 kg/m3, and a solids dg of 70 to 100µm. The predictions o the model also agree with data from the literature for submergence depths that reached 130 m. This airlift model was employed to simulate the pulp flow through a series of tanks, each of which was fitted with an airlift pump to transfer the suspension to the next tank. Particular attention was paid to the riser diameter, submergence of the airlift pump, and control of the air supply to the airlift pump during the simulated operation of a series of tanks. The results of the simulation highlight some design parameters that could affect the efficiency and operation of a plant that employs airlift pumps to transfer suspensions.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates continues to be explored as the next generation of leaching processes to sustain existing Cu Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) operations as easily leachable ores become scarcer. The leach liquors produced, particularly from total pressure oxidation, contain elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, making solvent extraction processing more challenging. Addressing this challenge will require innovative processing techniques and continuous improvement to be successful in achieving satisfactory physical and metallurgical performance in the SX plant. The ability to efficiently process these feeds via SX plays an important role in the continued success of POX technology. Characteristics of a concentrate leach pregnant leach solution (PLS) are discussed, along with best practices that should be considered for processing by SX. Findings discussed in this paper will shed light on ways to reduce process risk and bring additional improvement to the industry with minimal change to the SX plant. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electro refining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges. The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile. The experience related to the current paper centers around Cu concentrate leaching performed by Freeport McMoRan (known as CLP). The patented process was developed as an alternative to smelting and refining in 1998. The technology applies to both molybdenum and copper concentrates. Commercial CLP research and development began with Phelps Dodge in 1999 to 2001. The first commercial plant was commissioned in 2003 at the Bagdad operation. Initial operating conditions of the Bagdad CLP were under high temperature conditions before converting in 2005 to medium temperature conditions. In 2007-2009, the CLP technology was commissioned in Morenci, operating medium temperature and high temperature lite conditions until shutting down due to the economic downturn. The Morenci CLP restarted operation in April 2015 due to acid production benefits for the Morenci leach operations. Renewed solvent extraction test work initiated well before restart and has been an ongoing focus for further SX plant optimization."

Numerous federal statutes passed by Congress in the last decade have made the coal mining industry more responsive to the environmental impact during all phases of the mining process. The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Shaft 18B-1 is the second shaft to be constructed as a part of contract C547A along the New York City water supply system Tunnel No. 3. More complex than Shaft 17B-1, this site has an additional 30 m (100 ft) of overburden for a total excavation depth of approximately 78 m (256 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and 145 m (475 feet) of gneiss bedrock to connect to the underlying Water Tunnel No. 3. round freeing was specied as the method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. An extensive supplemental geotechnical investigation (SGI) and frozen soil testing program was performed to develop the design of a temporary ground freezing system, consisting of over 7,315 m (24,000 ft or 4.5 miles) of drilling for the installation of 95 freeze pipes. At the start of shaft excavation, the upper sandy silts strata was found to have an unprecedented low thermal conductivity, leaving the frozen soil face approximately 0.6 to 1 m (2–3 ft) behind the cutline. The ground freezing earth support needed to be augmented with ring beams and liner plates to support this soil face and allow for the excavation to proceed and be completed safely.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.
