A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.

Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

"GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

A quiet revolution has taken place in the conveyor belt industry, Man-made materials, improved production facilities, better splicing techniques and emphasis on repair and maintenance have all contributed substantially to lowering material handling costs for the mining industry, It wasn't too many years ago that the rubber industry had only cotton for a belt carcass and tree grown rubber for the protective cover. Then came the development of monofilament rayon. This material had desirable elongation and elastic properties and was the first synthetic fiber to be used in place of cotton. But wet strength and other limitations restricted its use, and the conveyor belt industry turned to nylon. Initially, nylon was considered suitable only for the cross threads or filler threads of a belt carcass. Then technical advancements in heat setting and fabric weave created a major change in belt construction. As a result of these advances the industry was able to take advantage of the full tension strength of nylon cord. Another breakthrough in the use of synthetics was the tremendous increase in adhesion resulting from a chemical bond, rather than the limited physical bond available with cotton. But the advantages of nylon had a more Car-reaching effect, We were able to design a two-ply nylon belt that did the work of a four- or five-ply cotton or rayon belt. A six-ply nylon belt now replaces a twelve-ply cotton elevator belt. Arid nylon resists moisture, acid and mildew, It also has excellent resistance to impact and can be produced with controlled elongation and elastic properties that work to great advantage in reduced-ply belt constructions.

"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

On June 14, 2023 Jay Dee Contractors’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) “Phoenix” holed through and completed mining the second drive of the I-75 Segment 3 Storage and Drainage Tunnel. Completion of the tunnel came only after overcoming several challenges, including a groundwater intrusion event which deposited thousands of cubic yards of wet ground material into the tunnel. This paper will discuss the events which delayed completion of the tunnel by over nine months, the risk management and construction approaches assumed by the Design-Build team during bid, several challenges faced by Design-Build teams when building stormwater resilience tunnels using traditional Department of Transportation standards, and recommendations for improving risk allocation and proposal documents for future similar Design-Build tunnel projects.

"The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

The adsorption of O-isopropyl-N-ethylthionocarbamate (IPETC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethoxycarbonylthionocarbamate (IBECTC) on chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite has been studied using UV and in-situ FTIR~ATR spectroscopy. Thionocarbamates were found -to adsorb strongly on chalcocite at pH 4-10, but consider-ably less on chalcopyrite and pyrite. The FTIR spectra show that the surface species of thiono-carbamates are bonded to metal atoms on the mineral surfaces. However, at high concentrations, IBECTC also forms physically-adsorbed species. Adsorption of these thionocarbamates cannot remove or prevent the formation of sulfoxy oxidation products on pyrite, unlike the case with the xanthate-pyrite system. This finding may account for the observed flotation selectivity of these reagents against pyrite. The spectroscopic information is compared with flotation test results.

Effective ground control in the gate entries, particularly in the tailgate travelways, is essential for safe longwall mining. Longwall pillars maintain gate entry stability and carry abutment loads. To answer the need for effective longwall pillar design, an empirical method called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was proposed several years ago. Some recent research at the Bureau of Mines has focused on the refinement and verification of the ALPS method. ALPS was originally developed from field studies in which multiple stressmeters were installed in longwall pillars and monitored during mining. Several new field studies have now been incorporated into the ALPS data base. The field measurements have&apos; been used to verify formulas for predicting abutment strength and pillar loads, and to develop an expression for the distribution of the abutment load.

A paradigm shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results can invoke questions such as how much was produced, at what cost, and was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as pre-eminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and a concentration on productivity have been an essential part of these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. This situation presents an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now night offer some interesting opportunities for the Future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today&apos;s work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work Force. The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is one approach to defining, capturing and transferring this expertise. The WCPM suggests a paradigm shift, moving from a focus on products (quantity) to a focus on the process (quality). It also involves a slight change in the process -- a different way to think and work. Of great importance, it entails a belief and a commitment to people within the organization; a commitment to collect simple (but interesting) data; exploration for insightful ways to plot and integrate that data; and finally the search for creative methods to reinvest that knowledge back into the organization, that is, back into the work force. As a way of thinking, the WCPM subordinates information about how much is produced daily or how many were injured over a year&apos;s time to concern and detail for how the individual&apos;s and the work crew&apos;s performance contribute toward meeting organizational goals. Drawing upon the expertise within members of that work crew to address and solve operational problems is one approach for meeting organizational goals. This everyday focus on how we work is hypothesized by the WCPM to make the difference between a good section supervisor and the average one; an exemplar continuous-miner operator and the run-of-the-mill one; a mining crew that produces consistently high quantities, but, inadvertently, degrades the production of other units. The WCPM permits objective and reliable performance data to be collected. This data then can be used to define variability within tasks of work crew members; to relate observed variability to a cost consequence; and to more meaningfully analyze performance through the integration of traditional analytical tools, such as the production simulator, CONSIM, with a recommended behavioral approach, the WCPM. Basis for engineering test Most equipment selections and purchases involve a field trial test of the system. Technology is routinely bench tested at the manufacturer&apos;s facility, government agencies and the mine site. The WCPM suggests a similar, but more practical, method for testing the performance of a work system -a test for how technology is used (by people) at the work site. It implies learning from veteran mining personnel that have gone well "beyond the book." This approach to learning and to integrating training with everyday work life can help answer questions such as: What constitutes desirable perfor¬mance as, for examples, a shuttle-car operator, a miner operator or a bulldozer operator; what characterizes exem¬plary performance within the context of the work system, the technology and the work crew; how can investments in the worker he linked to measurable results within the organiza¬tion? This paper explores these questions and makes recom¬mendations for enhancing the cost-linkages between invest¬ments in people and the mine&apos;s monthly cost sheets.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

The Pima mine, 39,000 ton per day copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The mine is in a sequence of Paelozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-northeast and dipping southeasterly intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian(?) dolo¬mites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to talc-silicate skarn, marble and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic(?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydro¬thermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units, lithic arenite, arkose, and inter¬bedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar and quartz, with or without sericite and chlorite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west post mineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. Two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Mineralization is predominantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are lens important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

Evans Industries, Inc., a management coal consultant and company was assigned to evaluate National Steel Company&apos;s coal properties in Knott and Floyd Counties, Kentucky. The results of evaluation showed large reserves of good quality, high volatile metallurgical coal contained in the Elkhorn coal beds and resulted in the formation of Beaver Creek Consolidated Coal Company. Based on results of the exploration and feasibility work, the decision was to install a coal nine, preparation plant and related facilities having a production capacity of one&apos; and three quarter million tons per year with Evans Industries acting as Beaver Creek&apos;s management company. The recoverable tonnage assigned to the Stinson Mine is approximately forty-five million tons. This paper discusses the general arrangement of storage, conveying, loading, refuse disposal facilities and the flow sheet of the preparation plant developed by engineers of Heyl & Patterson, Inc., and Evans Industries, Inc., with emphasis on practical flexibility, sulfur reduction in all circuits, and high product yield with the minimum amount of selective mining, Three and one-half miles of railroad have been built by the Chesepeake & Ohio Railroad to service this mine.

About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco&apos;s Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco&apos;s own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco&apos;s Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company&apos;s Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world&apos;s great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco&apos;s smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco&apos;s major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world&apos;s needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska&apos;s largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska&apos;s North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will

One of the Northwest Mining Association&apos;s guide-lines is: "If you always do what you&apos;ve always done, you&apos;ll always get what you&apos;ve always gotten." Another way of saying this is, simply, "when the road curves, don&apos;t refuse to turn." Our industry has been roundly criticized for living in the old political world, and, I believe, justifiably so. Until about 20 years ago, members of both houses of Congress deferred to specialists among their members for mining legislation. This was true for all public lands and natural resource issues, and were referred to as the mining bloc, or the timber bloc, or the ranching bloc. We felt safe, and to a large degree, were safe in the sense that western members of the US House of Representatives and of the US Senate understood the need for multiple use of public lands, and the need for the natural resources they supply. They also knew what it takes to stay in business and how to create the economic atmosphere that encourages private industry to find and provide the natural resources. Almost daily, members of our industry bemoan the destructive effects that current regulations, let alone new proposals, are having on American industry. And, there are some intriguing aspects for us to ponder. First, the specific complaint about the government is not regulation per se, but rather that the rules or policies don&apos;t make sense. We recognize that few understand our industry, but we have assumed that the government will rely on people experienced and knowledgeable in the area being brought under government controls. There was a time that this assumption was valid, but it is no longer true since we have entered the era of the professional regulator. Much like the MBA who believes that a professional manager can manage anywhere, the new breed of regulator sincerely believes that process is the key to developing effective regulations or programs. They reason the process virtually assures that all the pertinent facts will inevitably come to light and, after receiving appropriate considerations, will result in the proper decision being reached and implemented. Unfortunately, following the process also allows politics to play a new and greater role than ever before, since information based on what can only be called weird-science can now be presented to the professional regulator and accepted as fact. Regulators do not have the background to question the basic tenets of the conclusion being presented to them. To add insult to injury, testimony from people in the industry involved, intended to set the record straight, is too easily discounted as being merely self-serving. A second aspect is that the question of why the associations aren&apos;t doing more to stop poorly conceived legislative and regulatory proposals, or to counter the ever-increasing influence of the selfappointed public interest groups is being increasingly discussed. This is occurring despite the fact that there is a higher level of involvement and closer cooperation between the various associations than ever before. This raises a most important question: where are we going wrong? In the last 20 years or so, major changes have taken place. A new philosophy, taking advantage of the public&apos;s recognition of need to protect our environment, has swept through the nation, resulting in a whole new body of law enacted to assure environmental protection. We all acknowledge the need to prevent undue degradation during the course of mineral development, and we all consider ourselves to be responsible stewards of the land, because we live and work in the outdoors and know the importance of environmental protection. The changes in the federal statutes apply now to every aspect of mineral discovery, development, and production, and assure adequate reclamation of lands when we are done. Along with the positive changes, are a constant barrage of attempts to stop public land use, or stop mining, or stop any new economic development, ostensibly to "protect the environment," but often reflecting a hidden agenda of social reform. These types of extreme, irrational, and just plain impossible proposals are everyday occurrences, but we have not geared up to challenge all the proposals which could end mining. Instead, we did what we always had done. The road turned, but we didn&apos;t. And we wondered why those who had always protected mining weren&apos;t doing their job, and why we were having such limited success in reining in the regulators. TVA&apos;s involvement in air quality programs is perhaps a bit unique. The Tennessee Valley Authority was established in 1933 as a regional resource development agency and therefore must view clean air and clean water as essential resources for the overall development of the Tennessee Valley region. TVA operates certain resource development and production facilities, including power-generating facilities, which are potential air pollution sources. The remarks in this paper will be restricted to air pollution control technology at power-generating stations. Perspectives of Air Pollution Control The art of pollution control must be viewed from several perspectives: 1. It must be viewed in a time perspective--what is available now for air pollution control, what might be available in the near future, what are the likely technologies for the more distant future, and what the future trends in availability of resources might be. 2. Each air pollution abatement scheme must be viewed in the perspective of its total environmental consequences--not just its ability to clean up the air. The generation of electricity from coal produces waste gases, waste particulates, and waste heat. These wastes must be disposed of either in water, in air, or on land. If the polluting wastes are removed from the gas streams going into the air, then they must be disposed of either on land or in water or, hopefully, converted into a product which has some beneficial use. As an example, removal of S02 from stack gases could be more readily accomplished if one could dump waste sulfur products in water. He would solve an air pollution problem by creating a water pollution problem. 3. Techniques for air pollution control must be viewed in the perspective of regional, national, and world resources with their national security and economic implications. The power industry might reduce air pollution by switching generating plants to burning desulfurized fuel oil or natural gas.

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill.

Most fatalities in tunnel fires are caused by the spread of toxic smoke. Controlling the spread of smoke is crucial to provide a survivable environment for emergency egress. A properly designed and tuned feedback control loop is required to achieve a target flow that is slow enough to allow pedestrians to escape under different boundary conditions. Feedback control loops are also helpful in optimizing energy consumption under moving traffic conditions. A reliable feedback flow control system requires sophisticated engineering knowhow and experience, careful selection of instruments and controlled variables, and thoughtful implementation from design through field testing and commissioning.

Federal standards for refuge alternatives (RAs) mandate that they not exceed a Steadman apparent temperature (AT) of 95 °F (35 °C) at an assumed metabolic rate of 325 W, a limit that appears to be arbitrary. Occupants in an RA spend most of their time at rest (a metabolic rate less than 325 W), and thermal equilibrium can likely be maintained at an AT > 35 °C. The purpose of this study was to examine the upper limit of sustainable heat stress during 4- and 8-h exposures at rest. Five men underwent five 4-h trials (phase 1: AT range 39 to 49 °C, 90% rh) and five 8-h trials (phase 2: AT range 46 to 56 °C, 90% rh) in a semi-recumbent position. Descriptive statistics for gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), sweat rate, fluid intake, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), and changes in body mass are reported. Mean Tgi for all trials ranged from 36.9 to 37.3 °C, and mean HR for all trials ranged from 61 to 75 bpm. To determine the effects of increased heat exposure, differences in heat strain between 4- and 8-h trials were examined via repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). As AT increased, there were no significant changes in ΔTgi and ΔHR from 1 to 4 h in the 4-h and 8-h trials. During the 8-h trials, as AT increased, there was a difference in ΔTgi between 4 and 8 h. In conclusion, there was support for sustainable exposures resulting in no significant increase in physiological strain at an AT greater than 35 °C AT, with a sustainable limit (no increases in Tgi due to increases in AT) below 46 °C AT. Although the participants were not representative of coal miners, the results provide support for sustainable exposures greater than 35 °C AT at an average metabolic rate of 155 W.
