"Surface subsidence caused by underground room-and-pillar mining operations and by solution mining operations have been studied separately but never in combination. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Using Salt_Subsid, a subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute, and ArcGIS, Esri's mapping platform, researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. Project backgroundFMC Minerals has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, WY, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 488 m (1,600 ft). Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed.The location from which the trona is removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations are important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found between surface subsidence measurements and the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find relationships between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured surface subsidence and solution mining production using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI, Clarks Summit, PA) to estimate the location, size and shape of the solution mining cavern. This study would determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by secondary solution mining activities. The subsidence and production data sets used in this study were collected over a seven-year period from 2008 through 2014."

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

Steel slag is an industrial byproduct of steelmaking that is mainly composed of calcium, iron, silicon and magnesium. In addition, depending on the different raw materials entering the furnace, steel slag contains a certain amount of vanadium that is the main source of vanadium production, accounting for 69 percent of the species of the total vanadium raw material [1]. From experience, the production of one ton of steel will generate 1.0 to 1.5 tons of steel slag [2]. However, the utilization efficiency of steel slag is less than 30 percent, and a large amount of steel slag is identified as waste and stacked in tailings. The random stacking of steel slag not only wastes large amounts of limited steel and land resources but also exerts pressure on the environment [3], making it imperative to research the effective utilization of steel slag and recycling of metal resources.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as Laser Scanning (LiDAR) and Photogrammetry surveying devices have finally become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely (safely), rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing, so this paper specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. INTRODUCTION Point Clouds The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations, and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Figure 1). LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device. Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3-D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles, and even in a mobile backpack shown in Figure 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds”, but this paper does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility. Technology In the past few years point cloud acquisition device prices have dropped significantly, devices have become lighter, smaller and easier to operate, and processing and utilizing the data has also become faster and easier. Device size improvements include mobile backpacks (Figure 2) and handheld mobile LiDAR (CISRO, 2014), allowing mobile scanning in tight spaces both above and below ground or inside and outside of man-made structures. Airborne data acquisition options have expanded dramatically with the spread of UAS technology as seen in Figure 3 (Hexagon Geosystems, 2015). Once UAS usage regulations are sorted out, these versatile machines will be everywhere, offering high resolution coordinate scans, imagery and other remote sensing. While backpacks and handhelds allow access to tight quarters, UAS permit rapid data capture from narrow to broad areas with multiple perspectives reducing data “shadows.”"

A major design feature to consider from the initial pioneering works until reaching full mine production of icy regolith at the South Pole of Moon will be the ramp. This will allow the access of equipment and personnel in and out of the excavation area. Although most of the requirements considered when designing a ramp on the Earth are similar, the fact of working in low gravity, with zero atmosphere, the potential exposure to high radiation, extreme temperature levels and drastic changes of illumination, from intense light to total darkness, are new factors to be included. Transversal sections are obtained according to the progression sequence of the production levels, with changes in length, gradient, friction factor of the terrain and curvature when required by the location characteristics and the specification of the equipment utilized. A MATLAB script was developed to calculate all the variables, in order to obtain 3D generated surfaces from the range of possible profiles.

High-value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals, are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners and other places where such materials are processed. A study by Gastrow (2001) determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold was stolen from South African mines and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered (Gastrow 2001). Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.

In recent years, metal-producing companies have increased their investment in automation and technological innovation, embracing new opportunities to enable transformational change. Transformation to a digital plant can fundamentally revolutionize how industrial complexes operate. The abundant and growing quantity of real-time data and events collected in the grinding and flotation circuits in a mineral processing plant can be used to solve operational issues and optimize plant performance. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real time. The strategy for increasing the value of instrumentation in current plants is reviewed. An optimal Gaudin size distribution model provides augmented information from traditional sensors to find the optimal grind cut size to reduce metal losses in the flotation circuits. Sensors in flotation circuits enable an estimate of the recovery and determination of the optimal froth depth and aeration using an air hold up flotation model. A strategy of classifying data for on-line generation of insights to using operational intelligence tools is described. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous mineral processing is presented.

The question "what constituents should be determined?" is one that defies a simple answer, because earth scientist being what you are, the rock and mineral analyst will eventually be called upon to determine about three quarters of the elements in the periodic table. The concentrations of these analyses will range from as low as 1 ppb to 100% of the material being analyzed. The most important thing to remember about a quantitative analytical result is that it can only be an estimate of the concentration of the analyte present. A measure of the reliability of that estimate is given by statistically derived statements of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. When evaluating your data an understanding of precision and accuracy are of paramount importance. Precision is the measure of agreement between replicate values while the accuracy of a determination is the concordance between it and the true value. There is no quarantee, however, that a precise answer is an accurate one. The numerical difference between the two values is the error. When evaluating your data, the repeats analyzed with your samples will identify the precision and control standards of U.S.G.S. or Canadian Certified Materials quality will identify the accuracy. The main problem is this data is routinely withheld from the report, or was it ever included in the analysis of your samples?

In a recent issue of the Mining Congress Journal, J. L. Gilliland discussed the relationship of air quality criteria, standards, and regu¬lations (1). As he pointed out, The Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged with issuing "Air Quality Criteria" which are statements concerning the concentration-effects relationship of an air pollutant. These "criteria" provide the states with a basis for their air quality "standards," which may lead in turn to emission "regulations." He further cites a list of major factors described by the National Air Pollution Control Administration, which must be considered in developing criteria. These are: properties of pollution; responses; measurement methods; exposure parameters; and characteristics of receptors. Although we briefly discuss the first two items, the principal concern of this paper is with the third item, the methods of measurements. In attempting to define responses, it has proven surprisingly difficult to establish a clear-cut cause-effect relationship between air pollutants and impairment of health. It is perhaps not too surprising that the ecological approach currently in fashion seems to be a much more powerful tool in defining cause-effects relationships. Without belaboring the point, we would like to point out that establishing such cause-effect relationships have tremendous legal and financial implications e.g., consider the possible establishment of such a relationship between pollution and inadvertent weather modification.

The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column bioleaching as a means of recovering manganese from a domestic low-grade oxide ore. Manganese was solubilized from the ore using indigenous heterotrophic microorganisms and molasses as the nutrient source. The effects of medium flow rate, molasses concentration, and frequency of medium replacement on the rate of manganese extraction were examined. Results showed that flow rates between 0.4 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction, while an increase in the total amount of molasses applied during leaching directly affected the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions of more than 90% were achieved in 12 weeks of bioleaching in column tests using 500 g charges of ore. Sugar utilization by the microorganisms and formation of organic acid metabolites were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two methods were evaluated to recover manganese from the sugar- depleted bioleaching medium: (1) adsorption onto weak cation exchange resin, followed by stripping and precipitation techniques; and (2) direct precipitation of the manganese as MnCO, using ammonium carbonate. Both recovery methods removed at least 95% of the solubilized manganese from the medium as a carbonate salt. The stripped molasses medium was replenished with fresh molasses and recycled back through the bioleach column, successfully leaching more manganese.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple- hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosive charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g.,velocity, attenuation, single-hole input pulse), or by back-calculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties encountered are backcalculating individual input pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shorn to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included, improved input pulse determination and propagation laws, and more detailed verifications with field results are required in order to make the program more directly applicable to practical situations.

Some basic terms used in cost management and accounting include: - Cost. A sacrifice made to acquire goods or services, measured by the price paid. Technically, the sacrifice is called a cost until the benefits from the goods or services have expired, at which time the sacrifice is called an expense. In this text, the terms "cost" and "expense" are used interchangeably. - Revenue. An increase in the value of the firm resulting from the sales of goods and services. - Income. The excess of revenues over costs for a specified period. The term is often used with modifiers to indicate specific quantities on an income statement (e.g., pretax income; net income). - Activity. A measure of production work. Traditionally, physical production volume (tons of ore or units of product) has been used as the measure of activity. Other measures include direct labor hours, equipment operating hours, and quantity of materials or supplies consumed. - Responsibility center. A segment of an organization that is responsible for a specified set of activities. In mining, individual operating divisions can be treated as responsibility centers, known as profit or cost centers. Departments within a division are generally treated as cost centers. - Cost center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of cost. - Profit center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of profit (revenues and costs).

INTRODUCTION Pincock, Allen & Bolt, Inc. (PAH) has developed a series of cost models for Western U.S. Gold Mines. The models indicate the economic potential of developing gold properties at various production rates and ore grades. Various combinations of mining and processing methods are also analyzed. The conclusions shown in this paper are taken from PAH's 600 page study titled, "Capital and Operating Cost Models for Western U.S. Gold Mines." PAH decided to develop the cost manual as a result of our perception of the industry's need for such a document. It was our impression that exploration development decisions were being made on the basis of limited economic information. PAH has compiled a substantial database on unit cost information. That database and the engineering capabilities of the firm allowed us to develop a reasonably detailed analysis of capital and operating costs and overall development economics. The study has developed a series of algorithms for underground and open pit mining, processing, G&A, and infrastructure costs. The capital and operating cost data served as a basis for performing after tax discounted cash flow analysis for the various development alternatives. For the base case scenarios, a 15% DCFROR was assumed and the required ore grade was back calculated using the computer. The ore grade versus production rate graphs summarize the economics of developing gold projects in the Western U.S.
