The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. Over 20 full-scale seals were constructed in the Bureau's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 0.14 MPa or greater. A discussion on the experimental procedure, construction techniques, and the explosion and air-leakage test results is presented. Four types of construction material were used during this seal testing program: solid-concrete-blocks, low-density foam blocks, cementitious foam, and wood blocks. Only one of the solid-concrete block designs using a mortared thick wall survived the explosion and air-leakage tests. Most of the low-density foam block and cementitious foam seal designs were judged to meet the requirements to be considered a coal mine seal. One of the wood block convergence seal designs failed explosion testing. Based, in part, on these research findings, several alternative seal design constructions using low-density foam blocks, cementitious foam, or wood have been approved by MSHA for use in coal mines.

Mine shafts that are used as primary ventilation routes are different in their airflow characteristics to other subsurface openings because of the aerodynamic effects of guide rails, buntons, pipes, cables, ropes, and shape, size and velocity of conveyances. As many shafts contribute heavily to the overall resistance of a mine ventilation circuit, it is important to be able to predict the resistance of a planned shaft with reasonable accuracy. This paper describes part of a study on the ventilation characteristics of hoisting shafts, conducted for the Basalt (Nuclear) Waste Isolation Program (BWIP). Methods of quantifying each of the four components of shaft resistance are developed; namely the shaft walls, fittings (buntons, pipes, etc.), the skips or conveyances, including the dynamic effects of their motion, and shaft stations. Practical guidance is given on ways of reducing the shaft resistance. The paper concludes by giving a step by step procedure for the ventilation aspects involved in the design of combined hoisting/ventilation shafts.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

A methodology to detect the presence and monitor the stability of shallow cavities is presented in this paper. The approach incorporates surface-wave seismic and acoustic emission/microseismic (AEIMS) techniques. Application of tomography to the seismic data is made to enhance the ability to locate cavities. Zonal and hit-sequence location techniques are introduced into AE/MS monitoring schemes. These source location techniques simplify the analytical procedure yet still provide sufficient information regarding the region of AE/MS activity. The concept of unique velocity data for conventional, least-squares, source location routines is discussed. A hypothetical case utilizing the algorithm is presented. The method described has been successful based on preliminary studies. Areas of current and future research are identified.

Progress in computer control of flotation circuits has developed parallel with advances in reliability of on-stream X-ray analysis (Cooper, 1976). Attainment of acceptable results with X-ray fluorescence analysis over the past ten years has led to application of computer control in more than 30 concentrators. Gains in applying flotation control also have given incentive to improving measurement and control devices for other essential functions in control systems. At the same time, advancing technology has made available computer systems having characteristics practical and economical for the physical environments of concentrators and ore processing plants. Benefits from flotation control have centered on increased efficiency in mineral separations, derived by stabilizing circuit operation subject to changing ore characteristics. The gains have been most evident in processing complex ores for multiple concentrate products. In many cases, particularly when coupled with grinding control, the economic results from on-line control have been substantial compared to investments in monitoring and control equipment.

Tripoli and the related mineral commodities such as micro- crystalline silica have been mined for more than 100 years for their abrasive properties. Although abrasive and buffing compound markets are still very important, within the last 15 years the filler and extender markets in paint, plastics, rubber, adhesives, and sealants have increased substantially. Tripoli or microcrystalline silica consists almost entirely of very small quartz crystals, many less than one micrometer in length. Material mined from different districts differs in crystal shape, grain size, and texture of the rock, all of which influence markets. Most US deposits are now mined by surface methods, and both air floated and micronized products are marketed. Deposits of tripoli now mined in the United States occur in chert-bearing Paleozoic limestone in the central part of the country with producing districts in southern Illinois, central Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma. Although deposits within each district are confined to specific formations and extend laterally within those formations, individual bodies form minable deposits that are typically several hectares in areal extent. Tripoli is white to cream to rose and characterized by high porosity and ease of disaggregation. DEFINITIONS Tripoli In the United States, tripoli was first used to describe the fine-grained, easily disaggregated material from Seneca, MO, be- cause of its similarity to a rock from the Tripoli region of North Africa (Hovey, 1894). The North African rock is actually diatomaceous earth, a material that is similar in appearance to the rock from Seneca, but is of entirely different origin having formed by the accumulation of siliceous remains of microscopic marine or fresh- water animals. Tripoli is best defined as a very fine-grained, generally porous rock that consists of microcrystalline quartz, typically formed by the alteration of a chert-bearing limestone. Tripolite A term used to describe a rock from the vicinity of Tripoli in North Africa which is diatomaceous earth (Quirk and Bates, 1978) Microcrystalline Silica Microcrystalline silica is the same material as tripoli, but the distinction between the use of these two names is dictated largely by convention and markets. Material produced from southern I1linois deposits and used in white pigment and filler applications is generally referred to as microcrystalline silica, whereas that used in abrasive applications, both from the Illinois district and from other states, is commonly called tripoli. Amorphous Silica Amorphous silica, a term formerly used to describe the material produced from the deposits in southern Illinois, is now replaced by the term microcrystalline silica. Amorphous silica came into use when even optical methods for the identification of very fine- grained quartz were not widely available and the Illinois product, composed of quartz grains too small to be seen with the unaided eye, was thought to consist of amorphous silica. The Illinois material is clearly crystalline quartz, as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy (Fig. 1). Novaculite Although originally used to describe a rock suitable for the manufacture of whetstones, novaculite is now defined more generally " - as a homogeneous, mostly white or light colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a waxy or dull luster, and almost entirely composed of microcrystalline quartz" (Steuart et al., 1983). The more compact rock mined in central Arkansas from the Arkansas Novaculite is referred to as novaculite, whereas the more porous rock is referred to as tripoli. Rottenstone The commodity rottenstone is sometimes included within the general mineral commodity category of tripoli. Rottenstone is mined in Northumberland County in eastern Pennsvlvania and formed by the weathering of a siliceous shale of Devonian age (Faill, 1979, Berkheiser, private communication, 1991). This material is used as a filler and extender, but is apparently unlike tripoli both in origin and physical properties. Spiculite Spiculite is a rock consisting of siliceous sponge spicules having formed by the removal by solution of the carbonate matrix of a spicule-bearing limestone. Spiculite has been mined in Texas and, because it resembles tripoli in several aspects, is included in the discussion of deposits.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

Justifying refinery material handling equipment jointly involves economics and indirect benefits. The simple evaluation method is applicable when either retrofitting facilities or costing new metal refineries. The text includes points of interest regarding equipment selection as an additional guide. Although the copper industry was used as a basis, it is recognized that similarities in material handling may exist within the parallel electrolytic refining and winning of metals such as copper, nickel, lead, zinc, tin, and cobalt. The analysis of four major automatic systems, typically implemented in many tank houses, includes tabulated data plus a detailed description of additional benefits. General information regarding auxiliary material handling equipment and an overview are included for subject completeness. It is suggested that the quantitative and qualitative aspects presented may contribute to the basis for justification of automated material handling. The labor-oriented economics plus related intangible benefits described herein should provide incentives to modernize or replace manual operations where practical.

With the exception of reports on commercial deposits of kaolin, fuller's earth, and other specialty type clays, there is little published information on the extent, properties, and potential uses of the clay resources of Florida. Recent studies by the Florida Bureau of Geology in cooperation with the University of Florida and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have proven the existence of two extensive Miocene clay deposits, one in peninsular Pinellas County and the other in southeastern Charlotte County. Drilling and subsequent testing of the clays from these deposits indicate their potential for economic development. Both deposits consist of montmorillonite type clays, have an average thickness of 25 to 35 feet, and are overlain by unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments. Preliminary firing tests indicate that the clays from Pinellas County are a potential raw material for lightweight aggregate production. The clay has good bloating characteristics across an acceptable temperature range with a resultant aggregate density of less than 1.00 specific gravity. The clays from Charlotte County have poorer natural bloating characteristics but might well be used after treatment or with additives. The economic potential and locations of both deposits emphasize the need for locating similar clay resources in the state that might have economic potential so that land use planning and subsequent urbanization will not prohibit their development.

The development of new processes has to follow "best practice" rules in order to be technically and economically as efficient as possible. However, innovations, new process routes and new rules are continuously emerging to minimize financial risk and maximize environmental compliance. Process simulation, which offers a complete overview of the flowsheet, makes it possible to cope with this new challenge-minimizing waste production and water consumption. Furthermore, simulation provides an estimate, at the early stage, of the cost of alternative technical routes. Four examples involving biotechnological circuits are presented, both at the design and commissioning stages.

A historical background of the development of automated material balance packages is presented including a summary of currently available packages and a description of the present work at the Mineral Resources Research Center of the University of Minnesota. A brief mathematical statement of the problem is given and solution techniques discussed. The problems and difficulties normally associated with material balances, both hand calculated and computer calculated are described. Several aspects of the available material balance packages as related to the "user/computer" interface are evaluated in detail. Elements of the material balance packages that affect the solutions are examined and the relative performance of the main packages on specialized problems presented. Finally, areas associated with automated material balances that require further work before computer packages can be widely used in industry are outlined.

In this paper, we present an a posteriori validation of a heap leaching analytical model using sensitivity analysis. The model is suitable to represent the process of heap leaching of solid reactants from porous pellets and is based on a combination of the leaching kinetics at two levels: particle and heap. The validation is simple, and a sensitivity analysis can easily be performed. The simplicity of the analysis provides insight into the control and optimization of the heap leaching process without strong mathematical complexities. The model and the corresponding sensitivity analysis include the effects of heap height, particle sizes, flow rates and several operation-design variables. Using a case study, we discuss the importance of model validation based on sensitivity analysis. We also comment on several choices for optimizing the process. We had three goals in this work: a posteriori validation, highlighting the importance of model validation and providing insight into optimization choices. We can conclude that the model has good internal logic and there are no extra variables; i.e., all of the variables in the model are necessary.

In the mining industry and in new and expanding fields, such as electronics, nucleonics, and astronautics, a new type of manager has evolved. The name most generally used is project manager. His business is to create a product and the principal means through which he accomplishes this is project management. In this chapter, new information is the product of the project manager; as such the products, for which the computer methods described throughout this volume are designed, fall in the domain of project management. It has been the author's experience that project management is the management tool to effectively direct the information technology function within an organization. The purpose of this chapter is to describe project management and to identify and present a solution to the problems associated with project management in the development and application of computer methods in a minerals environment. Specifically, the problems to be addressed will center around: (1) recognition of the need for project management in terms of business-environmental factors and product characteristics, (2) formulation of a method of operation in terms of organization and implementation, and (3) application of project management to the minerals industry.

An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

Reclaimed mine sites have been evaluated so that the public, industry, and land planners may recognize there are innovative designs available for consideration and use. People tend to see cropland, range, and road cuts as a necessary part of their everyday life, not as disturbed areas despite their high visibility. Mining also generates a disturbed landscape, unfortunately one that many consider waste until reclaimed by human beings. The development of mining provides an economic base and use of a natural resource to improve the quality of human life. Equally important is a sensitivity to the geologic origin and natural pattern of the land. Wisely shaping our environment requires a design plan and product that responds to a site's physiography, ecology, function, artistic form, and public perception. An examination of selected sites for their landscape design suggested nine approaches for mining reclamation. The oldest design approach around is nature itself. Humans may sometimes do more damage going into an area in the attempt to repair it. Given enough geologic time, a small-site area, and stable adjacent ecosystems, disturbed areas recover without mankind's input. Visual screens and buffer zones conceal the facility in a camouflage approach. Typically, earth berms, fences, and plantings are used to disguise the mining facility. Restoration approaches the best land use as restoring to its original condition. Rehabilitation targets social or economic benefits by reusing the site for public amenities, most often in urban centers with large populations. A mitigation approach attempts to protect the environment and return mined areas to use with scientific input. The reuse of cement, building rubble, and macadam meets only about 10% of the demand for aggregate. Recognizing the limited supply of mineral resources and encouraging recycling efforts are steps in a renewable resource approach. An educative design approach effectively communicates mining information through outreach, land stewardship, and community service. Mine sites used for art show a celebration of beauty and experience-abstract geology. The last design approach combines art and science in a human-nature ecosystem termed integration. With environmental concerns, an operating or reclaimed mine site can no longer be considered isolated from its surroundings. Site analysis of mine works needs to go beyond site-specific information and relate to the regional context of the greater landscape. Understanding design approach can turn undesirable features (mines and pits) into something perceived as desirable by the public.

Sealaska Corporation, the Alaska Native Regional Corporation of Southeastern Alaska, was organized under the laws of the state of Alaska pursuant to the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Large areas of Sealaska's 630,000-acre (250,000 hectare [ha]) fee subsurface holdings are underlain by carbonate, and while much of this material is assumed to be common variety limestone and lesser dolomite, at least two areas in the Silurian Heceta Limestone contain high-quality limestone at tidewater. This limestone has many potential commercial uses. On northern Prince of Wales Island, about 90 miles (144 km) north-northwest of Ketchikan, resource development at Sealaska's Calder deposit has established a reserve of 13 mil- lion short tons (st) (12 million metric tonnes [mt]) of carbon- ate rock containing an average of greater than 98 percent CaC03, approximately 0.5 percent MgO, less than 0.5 per- cent Si02, and approximately 0.15 percent Fe203, with insolubles averaging less than 0.5 percent and an average Hunter Brightness of 92.07 for the -150 mesh grind (with a bright- ness cutoff of 90). The deposit is open at depth and to the south. Ultimate reserves will likely be several times those currently established. In 1998, Sealaska began mining the Calder deposit, with about 100,000 st (90,000 mt) produced, and also completed a marine terminal one half-mile (800 m) from the deposit. The terminal can load ships up to 680 feet (200 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. 0 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. On Dall Island at Breezy Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Ketchikan, Sealaska has identified a limestone reserve in excess of 150 million st (135 million mt) that (based on 18 surface samples distributed evenly over about a section of land) contains about 98 percent CaC03, and less than 0.5 percent MgO, 0.5 percent Si02, and 0.15 percent Fe203. Brightness of the Breezy Bay carbonate is considerably less than at Calder. Five samples of brighter material from Breezy Bay returned brightness analyses in the high 80s and low 90s; average brightness is probably below the mid- 80s. Sealaska has also identified a deposit containing more than 19 million st (17 million mt) of similar rock near View Cove, a few miles south of Breezy Bay.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed, and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear-flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, mean particle size increased rapidly in the first 1-2 min of reaction; in the second stage, an equilibrium was set up between the rate of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear-flocculation to occur and was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier which kept conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

Froth flotation has been shown to be an effective method for reducing Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) of ponded or landfilled fly ash. Reduction of LOI is required for many fly ashes, particularly those produced from low-No, burners, in order to meet ASTM requirements for use as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. An additional ASTM requirement, fineness, is critical in determining end use applicability, and in many cases, classification of fly ash is necessary to produce an acceptable product. Hydraulic classification has been shown to be a simple, cost-effective method for classification of a variety of minerals including silica, phosphate, mica, coal, etc. and has shown to be similarly effective on fly ash. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification facilitate the production of a high quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active utility storage ponds and demonstrated that high quality, consistent pozzolan could be produced using APT's Fast Float? Technology. Along with the pozzolan, additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and a low sulfur, medium Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float? process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency; classification controls particle size distribution which is critical to achieving early strength, flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I. (Loss on Ignition) while dewatering controls the moisture content.
