Technical developments in the American petroleum industry as regards exploration, drilling, production, and transportation were characterized by many anomalous conditions during the half decade 1914-19. A review of the literature of that period discloses the striking fact that individual geologists, engineers, and other technologists were surprisingly well versed concerning the occurrence of natural hydrocarbons and methods of extracting them and were acquainted with many of the physical and chemical characteristics that influence the behavior of fluids in natural reservoirs. However, the industry as a whole knew little of the correct application of recognized fundamentals; indeed, judged by present standards certain expediencies of self-styled "practical' operators seem cumbersome, if not evidences of ignorance.

"Aeromagnetic data can be useful in helping to delineate structures and rock types in gold exploration. Magnetic anomalies associated with Archean volcanic belts in northeastern Ontario can be quickly and effectively analyzed in profile form with the use of model curves. The model curves help to locate contacts between strata. They also help to estimate the magnetite content of the rocks and their depth beneath overburden.An aeromagnetic map of part of Catharine Township, Ontario has been analyzed with the aid of model curves. Several magnetic rock types, potential fault zones and areas of relatively thick overburden were delineated.IntroductionIn any exploration program, a good understanding of the stratigraphy, rock types and structure enhances the possibility of success. For example, environments which host gold deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt may be characterized as follows (Jensen, 1980; Pyke, 1980):(I) They have major faults, especially as tectonic boundaries between volcanic piles which include mafic and ultramafic rocks and clastic sedimentary rocks or gneisses.(2) They have subvolcanic felsic intrusions.(3) They have extensive carbonitization, with or without carbonate and sulphide-facies iron formation.In all cases, delineation of structure and rock type should be a major objective in exploration. The analysis of magnetic data can be a useful tool in this task. This paper is presented with the purpose of describing the application of the magnetic method to gold exploration in Archean volcanic terrains.Magnetic AnalysisTotal-intensity magnetic contour maps can be used to discriminate rock units according to differences in magnetization. However, because of smoothing of texture resulting from the compilation procedure and the fact that survey lines are widely spaced, contours should not be directly used for quantitative analysis. A much more definitive means of magnetic analysis is provided by the use of the original profile or chart recordings. Model curves provide a basis for analyzing these profiles both accurately and rapidly."

The contemporary seismic response analysis of structures using a finite element analysis code requires six elastic spring constants to address the six degrees of freedom ground/foundation contribution to the response of a structure to earthquake shaking. However, the ground response is nothing but linear. Thus, it is critical to address the effect of the nonlinear ground response to the performance of structures under strong earthquakes. This study specifically addresses the effect of pile foundation on building vibration using finite element analyses. The effect of single pile was first investigated and the load was applied at the pile head using the single-degree-of-freedom load at a time, including three translational loads in the x, y and z directions and three moment loads about the three respective axes. In this study, the coupling effects between two or more different loads were not investigated. A load is increased monotonically to investigate the nonlinear behavior of pile under various loads. The Mohr-Coulomb model was used to represent concrete. To explore the effect of soil models on the nonlinear spring functions, the following constitutive models of soils were used: linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb model, Cap model, modified Cam-Clay model, and Duncan-Chang hyperbolic model.

Sustainable development is a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The topic is necessarily broad and complex, covering an entire spectrum of related areas, from geology to end-use products. The objective of this keynote address is to focus on the chemicals and chemistry aspects - especially research and technology transfer - in sustainable mineral processing. Chemicals came to play a critical role in mineral processing during the last century, and they will play an equally vital role in confronting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, particularly in the areas of greener chemicals, water efficiency and water resource management; waste reduction and remediation; minimising environmental impact, safety and health risks (meeting and exceeding the requirements of regulations); energy efficiency; and converting mineral resources into reserves. This keynote address argues that the current research framework is no longer adequate to serve the goals of sustainable mineral processing. The problems studied are often too narrowly defined or irrelevant, while the research efforts are fragmented and the methods and approach employed are often too reductionistic to produce useful knowledge. A new framework for research is needed. This address further argues that a new framework based on a holistic or systems approach can best tackle the challenges of sustainable mineral processing. Central tenets of this approach include a recognition that, in complex systems, the behaviour of the whole system is more than the sum of the individual contributions, and that interactions occur in real time, often in subtle and complex ways. The focus is thus on the behaviour of the whole system. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of the system through large-scale measurements should precede a study of parts or of idealised models of the complex system. The result will be a sound knowledgebase, better solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and improved technology transfer. Developing such a framework will pose a formidable challenge, requiring significant time and effort as well as a confluence of diverse specialties and strategic collaboration. Fortunately, recent developments in the context of reagent optimisation provide us with a prototype of a holistic approach. We can also draw upon methodological innovations in the biological sciences, where the critical need for a systems approach is well recognised and significant advances have been made.

In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

"The “Jameson Cell” flotation cell was developed at Mount Isa Mines in the late 1980’s to address deficiencies in our flotation column installations. Early base metal installations had a variable record. The test work and trials showed they made an improvement metallurgically when operated correctly, but performance of the early installations was hindered by a range of operational and maintenance issues. The installations needed to be more robust, and we needed a better understanding of how to successfully integrate the cells into the plant flow sheet.During the 1990’s, Jameson Cells had great success in coal fines flotation and organic removal in SXEW applications, and became the standard in these applications in Australia. These installations improved the cell design and materials of construction and the cell flow sheet design, to make it low wear with self-regulating control, producing good performance with little operator input.These improvements have enabled a fresh look at the use of Jameson Cells in base metals. Recent new installations have shown significant benefits in “hybrid” circuits, that combine the best features of both Jameson Cells and conventional flotation cells, achieving better overall circuit performance in a smaller footprint than either technology could do by itself.Case studies of successful base metal applications are discussed, using size-by-size mineralogical performance to explain the improved circuit performance. The new methods of flow sheet test work design are also described."

THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... "The outlook for supplying the world's metal needs in the next twenty-five years is good, although in several cases basic costs are likely to increase with rising demand. Metal prices calculated at a constant dollar from 1900 to the present show that for nickel, copper, silver, lead, zinc and tin, prices -and presumably production costs -fell from 1900 to the early 1930s. Since then, they have generally risen, apparently reflecting some depletion in relation to demand. This tendency has been accentuated since the post-World War II adoption of managed, full-employment, growth economics, which have resulted in a sharp escalation in world demand for metals. (Abandonment of such policies, apparently now under consideration in North America, would, of course, affect the pre-dictions of this paper.) Nevertheless, metal prices generally are still below those prevailing in 1900. Exploration potential exists for disseminated ores of many metals still thought of as characteristic of lode and vein deposits. These include uranium, silver, gold, tin and nickel and, to a lesser extent, lead and zinc. Considering the discovery potential for some principal metals in relation to expected demand and prices, I would tend to rate them as follows: molybdenum, zinc, lead, uranium, silver, gold, tin, nickel and copper."

On the 2nd of June 2007 SELI S.p.A. started the excavation of Beles Tailrace Tunnel (Ethiopia). The new 8,07 m diameter DS Universal TBM utilized for the tunnel excavation was manufactured by SELI S.p.A. and allowed the installation of 30 cm thick concrete lining, contemporaneously with the excavation of 7,200 m of tunnel. The greatest part of the tunnel alignment was excavated in hard and sound basal-tic rocks. The paper describes the main steps of the tunnelling operations which led to a remarkably rapid excavation, with a peak production of 36 m / day and a final break-through achieved 46 days ahead of the contractual deadline. Furthermore the paper describes the work and logistic organization that was set up to efficiently perform the mechanized excavation in the very remote area of the project.

"Research was performed to assess the feasibility of barrier membrane substances, for use within mining or associated high risk environments, in restricting the diffusion transport of radon gas. Specific tests were conducted, both within laboratory and in situ environments, to determine radon gas concentration ratios across a barrier of interest and emanation rate variation resulting from application of such materials. Several materials have been demonstrated to be effective in restricting the emanation of radon gas into initially radon-free environments. One liquid material shows particularly good promise upon consideration of ideal radon barrier criteria.IntroductionIt has long been known (I.2.3) that inhalation of the short-lived, alpha particle-emitting daughters of radon gas can result in irradiation of lung tissue with the potential for causing lung cancer. Control measures are necessary to maintain concentrations of airborne contamination at a minimum to protect miner health and safety. Typical control practices in mines have been through the application of systematic ventilation and backfilling of excavated opening. As mines become deeper, however, and additional workings become exposed, increased ventilation capacity requirements are needed. As an alternative to other radiation control measures, the use of sealants to prevent radon migration from walls into mine atmospheres may provide a suitable engineering alternative."

Leaching experiments were carried out on a spent catalyst sample with a honeycomb structure, containing 47.5% Ti, 5.8% Mo, 2.7% Si, 2 035 ppm As, 52 ppm Pb and 8.8 ppm Hg. More than 93% of the Mo and As was removed by direct alkaline leaching after grinding to 80% -36 micrometres. The residue contained 0.3% Mo and 60 ppm As. To obtain a TiO2 matrix with 30 ppm As, acid leaching at controlled pH with 90 kg/t Al scrap was followed by oxidising alkaline leaching. Treatment of the direct alkaline leach solution or of the mixed solutions from the two-stage process involved two successive operations: purification by neutralisation with Al(OH)3 addition to raise the Al concentration to 4 g/l, and ion exchange on Amberlite IRA 94 S resin. Whatever the type of solution treated, elution with 200 g/l NH4OH solution gave an eluate of very high purity containing 164 g/l Mo, less than 70 mg/l V and less than 2 mg/l As

Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.

This bibliography contains 3,062 different citations to technical and scientific literature about helium and alpha-particles abstracted by 13 abstract service publications during 1963. Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

"As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action toward decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."
