"Due to certain advantages in (semi-)Autogenous-Ball mill circuits in most of the high-throughput ore grinding units of mineral processing plants, much attention is paid to optimize the mill performance. Despite the maturity of the grinding mill mechanical design, there had been made less attention to the efficiency of the grinding media in the past. In this research, the possibility of establishing a relationship between liner/lifter wear rate and variations in the composition of the iron ore (from Chadormalu mine) is investigated.Measurements and determination of liner/lifter wear rates and patterns concluded in recognition of critical liner segments exposed to much abrasion during the ore grinding. After metallurgical analysis of liner materials and correlation of wear rate with the ore composition, the homogeneity in the metallurgical microstructure of the alloyed steel (such as the uniform distribution and amounts of the constituent phases) was determined as the most influential factor in the response of the liner/lifter to the variations in the ore composition. Magnetite with greater abrasion index than hematite, in finer particles, is responsible for additional abrasion of liners; hematite with greater work index exists in the mill with larger particle sizes, thus it could produce wear on liner parts with less tolerance to impact as is the situation for martensitic steels.INTRODUCTIONThe mineralization in Chadormalu plutonic iron ore deposit is consisted of mostly magnetite, hematite, martite, apatite, quartz and carbonates. The average composition of the ore is presented in Table 1. In the processing circuit, the gyratory crushed ore reduced to 30 cm would finally be the feed to three similar 32’ semi-autogenous mills in parallel processing lines. The pulp in the mill would have the characteristics mentioned in Table 2. The quality of the mill output has its direct effect on the downstream processes either physically or chemically (e.g. in cycloning or flotation respectively). In order to take advantage of optimum performance for these circuits, a close control of the ore grinding conditions is necessary; because any shortages in throughput, liner/lifter damage or changes in ore composition could bring the unexpected casualties. In this work, it has been attempted to find (possibly) a reasonable relationship between variations in ore characteristics together with liner quality and the amount of wear rate in different liner/lifter segments of a semi-autigenous mill. Liner/lifter segments are supplied by three different domestic steel making companies. The alloy structure of the liners/lifters is made up of pearlitic chromoly steel."

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

"The Cresson gold deposit is located in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. The deposit is composed of volcanic intrusive rocks and volcanogenic sediments where gold mineralization is associated with veins and cavities within a diatremal breccia.The purpose of the current study was to:1. Determine the penetration potential of the Cripple Creek Breccia.2. Assess the relationship between penetration and gold recovery within the Breccia.Two methods were applied using a cyanide solution containing ultraviolet sensitive dye to elucidate pathways of penetration within the rock. The first involved stagnant soaking of twoinch square pieces within the solution. The second method involved column leaching of ~100kg of Breccia crushed to P80 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Samples were selected at specified intervals to capture the penetration progress of the solution. Photomicrographs and image analysis were utilized to illustrate and quantify the degree of penetration.Results indicated that the maximum penetration for the Cripple Creek Breccia (85 to 97%) due to a porous and permeable groundmass, containing large non-porous lapilli fragments. In addition, ~90% of leachable gold was recovered with only ~50% rock penetration.INTRODUCTIONDye penetration studies were first developed at SGS-Lakefield Research for the purpose of determining the fluid penetration amenability of differing rock types. The method was to place a large rock or drill core in a pan with 1 to 2 inches of a pre-mixed, water based fluorescent dye. The sample was sequentially cut after prescribed time periods to reveal a fresh surface. The cut surface was photographed under long wave ultraviolet light, and the same piece returned to the dye and allowed to sit until the next prescribed cutting."

Whole-structure and mid-wall responses of 33 non-traditional structures to surface coal mine blasting were characterized. Eighty-nine blasts were conducted at 11 mine sites throughout the U.S. to measure blastgenerated dynamic response of structures typically found in the proximity of surface coal mining. Structures selected for this study include log-type, manufactured (single- and double-wide trailers), “mine camp”-type, adobe, and stone. Traditional acoustic microphones, t&axial (ground) and single component (structure) velocity transducers were used to record airblast, ground motions, and structures response time histories with a common time base. Wall crack displacement gages were used to record static and dynamic movement of existing drywall cracks. The relative responses of selected “atypical” structures to blast vibrations and nonblasting causes of structural stress, including natural forces, environmental effects, and human habitation, are compared. The purpose of this study is to document and compare vibration characteristics of structures that were not included in previous studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others in establishing the widely adopted safe level blast vibration criteria in the U.S. An important objective of this study is to outline an evaluation process including structure uniqueness relative to cracking susceptibility.

In recent years the requirement for high carbon ferro-manganese (HCFeMn), which is the key product of our company, has increased due to bullish demand for steel products. In our Tokushima works, we have 2 closed types of electric furnaces (1F and 2F), with which we are manufacturing HCFeMn. In order to meet the increase in demand, we made various modifications to these furnaces and we tried to increase the furnace operating loads. Especially for 1F, we deepened the furnace. In this paper, we report the results of this modification. The operational situations of the above-mentioned two furnaces are different because they have different individual profiles. As for 1F prior to modification, the depth of the furnace was one meter shallower than2F, because 1F was designed for the manufacturing of SiMn. On the other hand, our Tokushima works specialized in HCFeMn 14 years ago. However, the profile of 1F was not optimized for HCFeMn. In comparison to 2F, 1F was more difficult to stabilize due to the smaller tolerance for the adjustment of the electrode length, the metal / slag level, and the coke-mixing ratio. We deepened 1F by 770mm by disposing of the furnace rolling mechanism. We consequently achieved a 10% increase in production capacity. This meant the operating load was enhanced from 24.5MW to 27MW, the furnace became more stable and the tapping speed of both metal and slag increased, all which made the tapping easier than before.

This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from recent empirical studies of the relationship between mine safety and characteristics of miners, mine management, and mining companies. The review is based on literature published in the United States during the period from 1976 to 1988. In addition to summarizing the empirical findings, this report discusses the implications and limitations of these studies, and gives recommendations for improving mine safety. An annotated bibliography section appears in the appendix.

This article deals with an investigation into the specification and use of appropriate seating systems to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure in typical vehicles used in the SA mining industry. The EU Directive EU/44/2002 to be legislated in 2005 in European countries, provides legal and economic motivation for this project. The criteria for seat selection can be condensed to the requirements in the directive, which mandates an action level of 0.5 m/s2and a vibration exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 for an equivalent 8-hour daily exposure period. As part of this study six suspension seats, which the manufacturers claim satisfy the requirements in ISO 70966, were tested to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck. Six test subjects, three ?light? and three ?heavy? as specified in ISO 70966, were used to estimate the seat transmissibility functions in the vertical direction of the six different suspension seats. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory with two excitation levels of 1 m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5?30 Hz frequency range, as well as one spectrum approximating the EM5 spectral class. SEAT values were calculated for road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. A set of seat selection guidelines that can be followed by vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, procurement officers and and the technical staff on a mine is proposed in this article. It is recommended that additional studies of the use and operating conditions of seating systems in the SA industry, as well as an epidemiological survey be commissioned to gather additional information on this subject. The paper presents a design case study for a four-story correction facility addition in south Boston, Massachusetts, supported on friction piles driven into the Boston Blue Clay. 356 mm (14-in.) square prestressed-precast (PSPC) concrete piles were selected as they were found more effective and economical. A static load test was performed where the pile was brought to "failure". The load test data were evaluated to estimate the Ultimate Pile Capacity as well as the Ultimate Unit Skin Friction (Adhesion) to serve as a design tool for friction pile projects in the south Boston Area.

Sm-Co alloy is a kind of magnetic material with high power and has been applied in modern industry widely. In this study, the wet chemical co-precipitation was developed for synthesis of the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor. The thermodynamic analysis of the studied system was done to clarify the solution behavior theoretically based on the thermodynamic equilibrium and simultaneous equilibrium. Then, the experiments were done to address the various effects on the wet chemical process, including solution pH, reactant concentration, dispersant, reaction temperature and time, etc. It is found that by precise control of the process, the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor was synthesized with fine crystallization and special size & size distribution.

T HE theory of hardening by heat treatment was, as usual, the most actively discussed phase of metal working theory and in spite of the fact that it is now ten years since the dispersion theory was proposed by Messrs. Merica, Waltenberg, and Scott, it still retains a dominating influence. It is being increasingly recognized. however, that in its simplest form, that is, the purely mechanical effect of very fine crystallites distributed through a groundmass, it is distinctly in- adequate. To explain the observed facts we are obliged to assume some well-defined intermediate stage between supercooled solid solution and conglomerate, however fine be the particles of the latter. This intermediate has been inferred by Gaylor and Preston to be "the rejection of the atoms of the dissolved metal from the lattice of the solid solution accompanied by the possible formation of molecules."' Perhaps this may well be designated as the formation of supersaturated solid solution. Some very definite evidence of such an inter- mediate stage has been found in the hardening of steel where it appears that the very hard martensite may be considered as a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron. The X-ray spectrometry of drastically quenched steel shows a tetragonal lattice whose parameter changes by tempering at 100" until it coincides with the cubic lattice of iron.? The same gradual change of the tetragonal to the cubic lattice has been observed by Sekito when esamining layers on increasing depth below the surface of a quenched carbon steel.

What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it's easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don't have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you're going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you're attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I'm straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It's a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don't get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I'm estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.

Water-jet-assisted cutting involves the use of a mechanical cutting bit in combination with a high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip. Such a jet can offer benefits in terms of improved cutting, reduced dust and fines, and improved bit wear. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with the British National Coal Board, has researched the use of water-jet-assisted cutting on roadheaders. After several engineering design problems were overcome, this program led to the successful underground testing of these roadheaders. Today, more than 60 water-jet-assisted roadheaders are in operation around the world and numerous others are on order. This paper details the evolution of these machines and the benefits to be gained by their use.

In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.

The first International Conference on Ground Control in Mining opened with the topic of pillar design. Two classic papers were presented, one by Bieniwski and the other by Wilson. Unfortunately, the two methods were so radically different from each other that it was nearly impossible to reconcile them. Adding to the confusion were the many other pillar strength formulas (such as the Salamon-Munro, the Holland-Gaddy, and the Obert-Duvall, just to name a few) that were also available. Little wonder that discussions of pillar design in those days often ended with anguished cries of ?but which formula is the right one?? The past 25 years have seen substantial progress in the science of coal pillar design. Indeed, one testament to the improvement is the relative scarcity of papers on the topic at recent Conferences. Two factors have been largely responsible for the progress that has been made. The first has been the collection of large data bases of actual case histories of pillar performance in a variety of settings, from shallow room-and-pillar mines through deep cover longwalls. These have made possible the development of empirical design procedures that are closely linked to real world experience. The second important factor is the development of sophisticated computer models that can accurately simulate pillar behavior and roof/pillar/floor interactions. Together, these two lines of research have led to a new understanding of pillar mechanics that identifies three modes of pillar failure: ? Sudden, massive collapse, accompanied by airblast, for slender pillars (width/height<4) ? Squeezing, or slow, non-violent failure, for most room and pillar applications (4<w/h<10) ? Entry failure or bumps for deep cover and longwall applications (w/h>10) It is particularly satisfying that the insights gained from numerical models broadly support those obtained from the empirical studies. While far less controversial than in the past, pillar design problems continue to arise. One recent example is pillar design for highwall mining. NIOSH has just released a software package, called ARMPS-HWM, which employs a number of modern pillar design concepts. Since highwall mining web pillars are long and slender, the greatest danger is that of a sudden collapse. ARMPS-HWM suggests two possible prevention strategies, one which concentrates on the SF of the webs, and the other which creates a ?pressure arch? using properly sized barrier pillars. The paper will close with a discussion of some current needs in coal pillar design, including: ? Updating older empirical methods, such as ALPS, where changes in technology (new types of roof support, more demanding ventilation requirements, faster retreat rates) may have made some of the original case histories obsolete. ? Methods for determining site-specific coal strengths, focusing on bedding plane strength and other factors that may effect confinement, as input for both empirical and numerical design. ? Improved methods for evaluating coal pillar performance for environmental issues, such as surface subsidence and hydrologic impacts, which consider such factors as depth, w/h ratio, water immersion/drainage, and time dependent seam strength.

"Due to recent coal bursts in Australian coalmines, research of coal bursts has attracted intensive interest from mining researchers and engineers worldwide. Previous research has shown that the sudden drop of fractal dimension may be a precursor of catastrophic failure of rock. This paper examines the fractal characteristics of temporal-spatial distribution of acoustic emission signals released during the compression loading process of coal. This research suggests the possibility of coal burst forecasting based on acoustic emission data. The concept and calculation equation of fractal dimension is introduced in this paper. Additionally, uniaxial compression experiments of Australian coal samples are conducted, and the acoustic emission waveform and 3D location are recorded simultaneously by eight sensors Express-8 AE monitoring equipment in the loading process. The experimental results indicate that the continued slowdown of fractal dimension in time sequence can be used as a precursory signal of coal sample brittle failure. The fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of acoustic emission events decreases with the evolution of coal fracturing.INTRODUCTIONCoal bursts refer to the catastrophic failure of overstressed coal subject to the dynamic and static loads. In recent years, coal bursts have occurred in major coal mining countries and this phenomenon has attracted the research interests of international mining and geotechnical scholars. A total of five coal burst accidents happened in Australian coalmines since 2014. On October 20, 2018, a coal burst occurred at Longyun Coalmine in China’s Shandong province, which led to 21 fatalities. Unfortunately, even after decades of research, it seems neither more accurate forecasting methods nor comprehensive controlling measures put forward by researchers have solved the problems posed by coal bursts.As an instantons energy releasing process, coal bursts are always associated with energy dissipation in the forms of acoustic emission, micro seismicity, and electromagnetic radiation (Yamada, Masuda, and Mizutani, 1989). It is believed by many researchers that the frequency–magnitude relationship of micro seismicity induced by rock failure satisfies Gutenberg-Richer relationship as well (Feng et al., 2017). Hence, based on the principal and theory of earthquake source locating, micro-seismicity monitoring equipment has been adopted in many coalmines to locate seismic event origins associated with coal and rock failure in an attempt to better forecast coal and rock bursts. Although many parameters such as b value (parameter of Gutenberg and Richter’s law) (Lu et al., 2015) have been adopted as indicators of risk, the forecasting of coal bursts is still of low accuracy. The same is true with earthquake prediction, as it remains as a worldwide problem even after decades of research and practice. Acoustic emission (AE) methods are now widely adopted to detect rock failure processes under an applied stress for application predicting the abrupt failure of rock in the laboratory (Li et al., 2017). Previous studies have found that significant overlap exists between research regarding AE and micro seismicity with respect to generation process (both are concerned with the generation and propagation of elastic wave) and event origin location, as geophysical signals of both are same (Lockner, 1993). That is, the frequency–magnitude relationship and early-warning indicators found by AE research in the laboratory have a potential applicability to in-field micro seismic monitoring of coal bursts. Through experimental study, Feng and Seto found that the temporal distribution of acoustic emission counts of rock have distinct fractal structures during load-increase processes (Feng and Seto, 1999). Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. "The Similkameen Mining Company property is situated about 9 1/2 miles south and west of Princeton B.C. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, mining is presently taking place in the Ingerbelle pit. At 15,000 tpd of 0.50% Cu ore the Ingerbelle pit is sufficient for about 8 years. Another 8 years ore supply is available from the old Granby workings of the Copper Mountain property which operated from 1927 to 1957.The pit operations commenced in late 1970 with the concentrator starting in March 1972. Designed and built by Bechtel Corporation under the supervision of Newmont the concentrator's design was based on single-stage crushing and single-stage modified autogenous grinding. The modification was installation of a crusher to crush the critical size build-up. The description of the operation follows.CRUSHERThe primary crusher is an open pocket Allis-Chalmers. 54"" x 74"" gyratory. The basic closed side setting is 8"". The crusher is fed from one side with 100 ton Electra-haul trucks. The crusher pocket discharges to a 96"" wide conveyor belt, then to a 48"" conveyor system including a stacker belt. The crushed product is piled on a stockpile with a capacity of about 30,000 live tons. This stockpile feeds the concentrator."

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus, others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in tile world industry. &nbsp; It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations. &nbsp; Almost all offshore jurisdictions were considered to be high risk compared to the safety of home - I recall the extreme difficulty I encountered in the mid 1980s in endeavouring to persuade a Board to joint venture into an attractive gold opportunity in South East Asia. &nbsp; One of the problems inhibiting the offshore development of the Australian mining industry was that some mining companies had had unfortunate experiences offshore. Others had heard of those who had had unfortunate experiences offshore and, as such, &apos;offshore&apos; gained a bad name and the more risk averse boards and. management of the time simply put the whole idea into the &apos;too hard&apos; basket.

Thermophysical properties of silicate melts are strongly structure dependent. It is well known that the viscosities of slags increase with increasing the degree of polymerization of silicate anions. Even the thermodynamic properties of slags are dependent on the types of species and the population of the same in the melt. Thus, a link between the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of silicate melts is logically expected. The present paper elucidates the salient features of Darken?s excess stability approach to the Gibbs energies of solutions as applied to the viscosities of silicate melts. It is demonstrated, that the second derivatives of the viscosities of binary silicate melts with respect to composition indicate a maxima corresponding to the existence of stable compounds in these systems. The concept was successfully applied to the following systems: Al2O3-SiO2, CaO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, MgO-SiO2and MnO-SiO2. In all the cases, the second derivative plots of viscosities with respect to composition showed peaks corresponding to the metasilicates. The second derivatives of the activation energies of viscous flow with respect to temperature has earlier been shown to reflect the formation of associates/embryos in the homogeneous silicate melts, indicating the readiness of the melt to separate a solid phase. Thermodynamic coupling of thermal diffusivities in the case of the system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2from the laser-flash measurements of these slags as a function of temperature are examined as part of the present study. Densities are estimated from integral molar enthalpies in the case of silicate systems and the results are presented.
