The control of dust by water infusion, water spraying, and ventilation. 2. The sampling devices (tyndalloscope , konimeter , and BAT-I) and methods used to determine the dust concentrations in mines. 3. The systems of classifying hazardous and safe dust levels in mines. 4. The research facilities devoted to theoretical and applied work on mine dust and pneumoconiotic disease. Tile major research projects on dust and disease now underway in West Germany are outlined in an appendix.

The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

The junior and small-scale mining sectors in South Africa play an important role in the livelihoods of numerous communities. Mining presents an opportunity, in the post-1994 democratic era, for many individuals to obtain access to much required empowerment and socio-economic development. These sectors are, however, not without numerous characteristics that pose problems for operators, legislators, and other role-players. Mining is inherently risky, with operators experiencing frequent difficulties and challenges throughout the life of mine. Opportunity exists, and needs to be enhanced, for junior and small-scale prospects and operations to include technical risk assessment techniques in documentation presented in search for funding, and in optimizing monthly planning and longer-term functioning. The focus here is to explore how the risk management cycle may currently be applied to a mineral resource suitable for exploitation by the junior and small-scale mining sectors. No management process can create additional value in the ground, but various available mechanisms can go a long way to quantifying the inherent risk that exists, highlighting the need to manage the risks and hopefully allowing the entrepreneur access to the intrinsic opportunities of the emerging mining sector in South Africa.

A part of the East Bay Municipal Utility District?s Folsom South Canal Connection Project, 430 feet of raw water pipe was installed using micro tunneling beneath the Mokelumne River. The access shafts for this crossing were constructed 50 and 35 feet deep through very dense sands and soft sandstone and siltstone. High groundwater and the immediate source of recharge from the river required watertight shaft construction methods. The shaft contractor, Drill Tech of Antioch, CA, used a brand new Bauer cutter-soil mixing (CSM) rig to construct the large shafts. The structural concept is similar to secant piles, but instead of creating cylinders of soilcrete, the CSM rig creates interlocking rectangular panels. This technology has been used previously in Europe, Asia, and Canada, but this was the first project to use CSM technology in the United States. Cutter-soil mixing technology has other applications beyond shaft construction, including retaining wall construction and levee reinforcement.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy; is involved with laboratory and field experiments to assist in development of the Hot Dry Rock concept of geothermal energy. The field program consists of experiments in which hot rock of low permeability is hydraulically fractured between two wellbores. Water is circulated from one well to the other through the fractured hot rock. Our field experiments are designed to test reservoir engineering parameters such as heat-extraction rates, water-loss rates, flow characteristics including impedance and buoyancy, seismic activity, and fluid chemistry. Laboratory experiments were designed to provide information on the mineral-water reactivity encountered during the field program. Two experimental circulation systems tested the rates of dissolution and alteration during dynamic flow. SOlubil ity of rock in agitated systems was studied. Moreover, pure minerals, samples of the granodiorite from the actual reservoir, and Tijeras Canyon granite have been reacted with distilled water and various solutions of NaCl, NaOH, and Na.CO.. The results of these experimental systems are compared to the observations made in field experiments done within the hot dry rock reservoir at a depth of approxi-mately 3 km where the initial rock temperature was 150 to 200°C.

"Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. The market approach is applicable to all these types of non-producing mineral properties. Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage, but may be applicable to non-producing mineral properties with defined mineral reserves or mineral resources.The value of a non-producing mineral property depends on its perceived potential for the existence and discovery of an economic mineral deposit. The potential, in turn, depends on a number of factors which must be considered when choosing market comparables. These comparability factors include such items as geology, mineralization, stage of exploration and results, mineral resources, location and geography, and political jurisdiction. The date of the market comparables must be within a reasonable time period of the valuation date of the subject property. Although it is difficult to find good market comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions, these difficulties are compensated for by analyzing a number of transactions on similar properties to develop a range of values for the subject property.For valuation purposes, market comparables can be expressed in terms of total property value, value per unit area (e.g., $ per hectare), or value per unit of metal contained in mineral resources (e.g., $ per ounce of gold, or $ per pound of copper). The market comparable value can be used to estimate the value of the subject property by using the total property value, unit area value or contained metal value."

The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

To benefit two endangered fish species, waterfowl and other wildlife, and water quality in the lake and downstream, the decision was made to remove levees that had been in place since the 1950s. Because the levee material was mainly dredged up lake bottom peat, it was decided to pare down the sites chosen for breaching with dozers and trackhoes. This material was spread out onsite instead of expensive removal by dumping elsewhere. Because of the instability of the final pared down levees and the lake level being at a ten-year low, it was decided to use explosives to breach four of the sites. After over five months of earthmoving and two weeks of loading holes, the levees were detonated the day before Halloween, 2007. Somehow pumpkins showed up to be part of the explosive activities.

INTRODUCTION SOONER or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and. conduct of the development work must be governed to some extent by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. Some time ago, when the price of gasoline suddenly rose in a rather spectacular manner, the writer was one of the U. S. Geological Survey geologists called upon to help to estimate the quantity of oil that could be obtained in the United States, for the fear had become widespread that perhaps the rate of increase in the price of gasoline was a measure of the rate of depletion of the supply of petroleum. A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

"In a study of the chemistry and pathology of chronic benzene poisoning, which was conducted cooperatively by the United. States Bureau of Mines, the Barrett Co., and the producers of benzene, it was necessary to make quantitative determinatious of the abzorption, distribution, and: fate of benzene in the organism. Although methods for determining benzene in relatively large amounts were available no satisfactory method was found for removing and determining the small amounts that are present in the tissues or excretions after exposure to conditions which ultimately cause chronic poisoning. This no doubt accounts for the lack of information in the literature on this particular phase of benzene poisoning.The writers have found in work that will be described in a subsequent publication that the amounts of benzene present in the tissues and excretions under conditions of exposure which produce chronic benzene poisoning arc of the order of a fraction to a few milligrams per 100 grams of tissue. This report describes a method developed and found satisfactory for these determina¬tions.RÉSUMÉ OF PERVIOUS METHODSA method for the determination of benzene in tissue was developed by Joachimoglu. 5 In the Joachimoglu procedure the ground organs are mixed with water and acidified with diluted sulphuzic acid, and the benzene is distilled into a receiver containing carbon tetrachloride. The benzene is nitrated in the carbon tetrachloride, the carbon tetrachloride evaporated, the acid mix¬ture neutralized, and the dinitrobenzene extracted with ether. After removal of the ether the dinitrobeuzene is determined gravimetrically. Joachimoglu reports that this method is about 55 to 60 percent quantitative."

Ten small and intermediate-sized [11 GJ/hr to 264 GJ/hr (10,000 lb/hr steam to 250,000 lb/hr steam)] coal-fired boilers in the upper Midwest have each been tested on both a bituminous eastern coal and a subbituminous western coal. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting western subbituminous coal for eastern bituminous coal as a means of reducing the SO x emissions from this class of boiler and to demonstrate the feasibility of greatly expanded western coal utilization as a means of reducing the use of oil and gas. The scope of this study was such that the representative boiler types were tested on both eastern and western coal for a period of time sufficient to completely characterize their individual emission and operational characteristics.

"Exercising control over the physical environment of flotation as a step towards process optimization is the driving force for characterizing gas dispersion in flotation cells, a subject of considerable research and still not fully understood. From an operational standpoint, however, there are just a few variables that can be manipulated to manage gas dispersion on a cell-to-cell basis, the most important being gas rate (superficial gas velocity Jg). Measurements in eight plants demonstrate there is often no strategy for distribution of gas to cells in a bank, i.e., there is no particular Jg profile. Two exercises where Jg profiles were set allowed metallurgical performance to be manipulated and an optimum Jg profile to be selected. To facilitate setting Jg profiles, a multi-unit device based on McGill Jg sensor technology is introduced. Possible directions for gas dispersion management are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe earliest patents regarding the flotation process ignored the importance of air and in certain cases, steps were taken to eliminate bubbles from the system (Nelson and Smit, 2005). Rickard (1916) described a keen metallurgist who observed better than expected performance and hypothesized that entrained air was enhancing the process. Within a few years of this observation, the basic concept of modern froth flotation was developed whereby air is dispersed into slurry to induce bubble particle contact.As research into flotation advanced, the link between performance and the flow-rate of air entering the cell was established. In the first volume of the International Journal of Mineral Processing, Harris (1974) described the importance of airflow-rate and derived parameters such as the superficial gas velocity (then called the superficial airflow velocity) as being important parameters for cell design and scale-up. Mehrotra and Kapur (1974) presented research suggesting that the rate of flotation was strongly correlated to the aeration rate. McKee et al. (1976) continued to demonstrate the importance of airflow-rate linking it to the entrainment rate of hydrophilic gangue material."

For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

The field of industrial minerals is concerned with both sieve size and distribution of sub-sieve particles. A great deal of work has been reported on the techniques designed to provide information of this work. The term sub-sieve is here considered to include particular material that will pass a 325-mesh testing sieve. Plant men require rapid, precise and simple testing techniques that are, if possible, inexpensive with respect to equipment and manpower. A number of particle-size procedures have been developed, based on the Stokes equation for streamline movement of a particle of diam D, moving at velocity V through a liquid of viscosity n. 1 Particles are considered to be rigid, smooth spheres, completely dispersed at low concentration and moving at low velocity through the suspending medium with no slippage between particle and liquid. In particle size determinations the particle moves either from natural gravitational forces or those provided by centrifugal means. The diagram of Fig. 1 shows a spherical particle of density S and diam D moving downward at velocity L/T (or V) through a liquid of density So and viscosity n. Reviewer: R. H. Eric This edition is organized in twenty-three chapters, and contains exactly 500 pages including three appendices and an index. The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

In this study, the general case of semi-batch precipitation of nickel hydroxide, Ni(OH)2, is modelled. In practical terms, this precipitation may occur at high ionic strengths, and therefore the model for solution chemistry requires a thermodynamic model that is applicable for these non-ideal systems. The activity coefficient model used is the ELEC-NRTL. The simulation of the solution chemistry is performed using AspenPlusTM, which is a steady-state process simulation program. This allows for rigorous evaluation of the solution speciation, and hence the degree of supersaturation which dictates the precipitation kinetics. The solution chemistry provides the basis for predicting the formation of solids. The model consists of a solution chemistry part and a solids formation part. The inputs to the model include the initial concentrations of the streams entering the reactor, kinetic parameters for the precipitation processes, and a particle size distribution obtained from experiments. The solids formation part of the model employs the method of moments for the evaluation of the population balance. The population balance accounts for total particle number, and the formation and increase in size of particles across the entire particle size range. This balance requires kinetic parameters for the processes of nucleation, growth and agglomeration. Using optimization routines inherent in AspenPlusTM, parameters for the rate of nucleation, growth and agglomeration may be extracted from experimental particle size distributions. These are then used in the model to extrapolate to other conditions. Once an understanding of the kinetics of the precipitation processes is gained, the model provides a predictive tool for optimization of these kinetics, in order to increase the overall particle size and therefore improve solid-liquid separation. The work is deemed to be significant as it sheds some light on solids formation processes involved in precipitation?including nucleation, growth and aggregation?and develops a predictive modelling tool applicable to solutions of high ionic strength. We argue that this dewatering of suspensions is affected significantly by particle size distribution and surface properties of the solids formed by precipitation. This modelling tool should facilitate the design of solids formation processes where downstream dewatering is enhanced.

"Arsenic enters the Mount Isa copper circuit in the form of arsenic rich minerals in concentrates from both the Mount Isa and Ernest Henry copper mines. Arsenic is a volatile metal, and will partition in the copper smelter between smelter off gases, slag and anode. Most of the volatile arsenic will report to Isasmelt Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) or Waste Heat Boiler dusts where it will form a re-circulating load within the smelter. ESP dust is produced at a rate of 15,000 - 20,000 t/y and is currently removed from the precipitator and leached in the new ESP Dust Recovery Plant to separate copper and arsenic from the ESP dust. This paper describes the laboratory test works of ESP dust leaching, neutralisation and cementation processes. The planttrial, commissioning and operation have been presented as well.1. IntroductionThe flue dusts generated in the process of copper smelting contain appreciable amounts of copper and other valuable metals including precious metals. These flue dusts also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic trioxide where arsenic occurs in the ore body. The copper smelters processing concentrates generate residuals, such as ESP dust, containing arsenic trioxide. ESP dust contains impurities such as arsenic and bismuth which are harmful to the copper refining process if they report to anode. These impurities are fumed off in the smelting process and report to the dust as arsenic and bismuth oxides.The content of arsenic in the feed of Mount Isa copper smelter is about 0.1 % to 0.4%. Arsenic is a volatile metal, and will partition in the copper smelter between off gases and anode. Most of the volatile arsenic reports to Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) and Waste Heat Boiler dusts where it will form a re-circulating load within Mount Isa Copper Smelter. Unless arsenic is bled from the smelter circuit, it will build up to a point where both anode quality and smelter hygiene are adversely impacted."
