IN most human endeavors a knowledge of the terrain is essential to the effective carrying out of projects, but no line of work is more dependent on maps than theoretical and applied geology. Maps of a kind do exist for all of the area of the United States, but most of them are crude affairs and of little use in engineering, planning, and scientific research. Topographic mapping in the United States was initiated on a national scale by the U. S. Geological Survey and the organizations that were merged in its creation to make base maps for geologists. Their work could not be effectively done then and cannot be effectively done now without maps that accurately delineate the earth's surface. The distribution of the rock masses that contain valuable mineral bodies, or that by their intrusion brought them into existence, is the first step in a study of the mineral resources of the nation. This work requires three-dimensional maps, that is, topographic maps on which the land forms are shown by contours.

THE year 1930 resembled the preceding one in the coal industry in continuing the era of falling prices and 'of the abandonment of unprofitable mines. Practically all coal prices fell, and in the steam sizes during the last half of the year this was particularly true, due to the small industrial demand. No new mines of any size were opened in the bituminous coal industry, but there was a steady increase in the number of cleaning plants of all kinds built in all fields. It is estimated that at least nine million tons per year were added to the previous total of washed coal. The largest washing plant started during the year was that of the Buckeye Coal Co., at Nemacolin, Pa., with a capacity of 650 tons per hour. Fig. 1 shows - the mixing-bin, conveyor galleries, washing-plant and skip hoist, and Fig. 2 the 120-ft. Dorr thickener for collecting the 48-mesh material from the wash water. Dryers are used for drying the steam coal product. The following statement by J. R. Campbell shows the effect of cleaning on Pittsburgh coal in Greene County: "With the advent of the 650-t.p.h. efficient washing plant in Greene County at the Nemacolin mine of the Buckeye Coal Co., it has undoubtedly been demonstrated that the potential coking-metallurgical coals of the county can be brought within the pale of the highest grade high-volatile coals for steel manufacture. A few months' operation indicates that 9% per cent ash in the raw coal can be easily reduced to under 7 per cent ash in the washed coal and the sulfur from 1.60 per cent in the run of mine to 1.20 per cent sulfur in the washed coal.

IN THE past, we have, perhaps, been somewhat careless in our furnace practice, in the use of high-grade material, lowering the production costs through demanding high-grade ores, increasing the size of units, and eliminating heat losses by collecting and returning unused heat to our furnaces. Further economies would seem to be possible through keeping out of the furnace those materials that appear to serve no useful purpose and carry with them heat that should be used in reduction operations. In the manufacture of pig iron, about three tons of inert nitrogen pass through the furnace for each ton of iron produced. This nitrogen serves no useful purpose in the chemical actions involved, but when discharged into the atmosphere it carries away a considerable quantity of heat. Can not this loss be eliminated, at least in part, through the use of more oxygen in the blast? Many metallurgical chemists, during the past 20 years, have stated that they thought it can and have urged that the plan be tried. Others have expressed doubt, not being able to visualize how more oxygen could be used in present practice; they have regarded it as impracticable, without trying to conceive of an entirely new practice based on a new reagent. That more experimental work has not been done is due to the fact that no cheap oxygen has been available, but the committee believes that there is strong reason to expect that, should a demand exist, 99 per cent. oxygen may be made at a cost not to exceed $3 per ton. The theoretical studies of the committee have indicated such marked economy by using oxygenated air in various operations that its members strongly recommend experimental work to verify the anticipated economies. The committee has developed plans for experimentally determining the effects of oxygen-enriched air on the operation of an iron, blast furnace. A furnace with a height of 30 ft. has been built and it is recommended that the plans be put in, effect as the first step in the research.

New Mexico produced 39,751,868 bbl. of oil in 1941 and ranked seventh among the oil-producing states. Its 1941 production established an annual record, exceeding the 1940 record year by 854,498 bbl. The average daily production for the year was 108,909 bbl. The average daily non-marginal well allowable for New Mexico on Jan. I, 1941, was 36 bbl.; at the close of the year it was 43 bbl. The average daily pipe-linc runs were approximately 3 per cent less than the allocations of the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, which followed closely the recommendation of the United States Bureau of Mines in setting the daily outlet demand. The production in Lea County was 34,333,448 bbl.; Eddy County, 5,009,354 bbl.; and northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 406,306 barrels. The total number of completions in the state was 402, of which 301 were oil wells, 19 gas wells, and 82 dry holes. Drilling during 1941 was 68 per cent of 1940, and the ratio of dry holes to producers, I to 4, was the greatest since 1935. Of these dry holes 43 were drilled in proven fields and 39 were wildcats. One new oil field and one new gas field were discovered as a result of the 1941 wildcatting program. However, numerous extensions were made to the existing fields, which, although they were called extensions to proration areas, were in reality field discoveries, being on separate geologic structures. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County The Monument field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 6,973,808 bbl. It was closely followed by the Eunice field, with 6,644,181 bbl.; Vacuum field, with 4,800,608 bbl. and Hobbs, with 3,624,159 bbl. Hobbs field, however, still has the largest total recovery, this being 97,407,929 bbl. at the end of 1941. The new oil-field discovery in Lea County during 1941 was the Salt Lake field, T. 20 S., R. 33 E. The discovery well was Leonard-Welch State No. I, NW. NW. of sec. 18, T. 20 S., R. 33 E. This well was drilled to a total depth of 3103 ft. and was completed for an initial production of 250 bbl. per day pumping. The oil is 26" gravity and the producing horizon is in the San Andres limestone of Permian age. The discovery well was completed on June 22, 1941, and since that date four more producers have been completed, with no failures. The area is about 10 miles north-west of the Lynch pool, to which the oil from this field is being trucked because there is no pipe-line connection. The greatest drilling activity during 1947 was in the Maljamar field of western Lea County, with 62 completions, 59 being oil wells and 3 dry holes. The limits of this pool are now being defined on the north and south but to date have not been defined either to the east or west. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of green- sand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of green- sand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace- element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. The Birmingham district first produced steel from Alabama hematite ores in 1899. Since then, the district generally produced more than 6.0 million gross tons of ore a year to the late 1950's. Production has declined since then to an annual rate of about 1.5 million gross tons. Reserves calculated for the district are sufficient to last many years. Mining in the district is now confined to Woodward Iron Company's Vance and Pyne mines. The rocks exposed consist of about 15,000 feet of consolidated Paleozoic sediments with a thin veneer of unconsolidated Cretaceous sediments in the Vance area. The district is characterized by a distinctively parallel and subparallel, slightly arcuate series of faults and joint systems. In view of available information, it seems reasonable to conclude that the Birmingham red ores are of sedimentary origin, modified to a small extent by diagenetic replacement after original deposition.

The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition

THREE case histories from professions other than engineering will serve to introduce ideas basic to this discussion. Case (1) Date, about 1900. A young man, B. D. from a three-year graduate course in a prominent divinity school, was for two years a successful pastor of a small church; then friction over theological matters arose with a fundamentalist deacon of the "Bible belt" type. He resigned, returned to his university for a four-year medical course, interned for two more, and thereafter was successful and apparently happy as a physician. We may assume that he was converted in early adolescence and vowed himself to service as a minister. Acceptance of his announced career by parents, friends, and teachers plus his own determination confirmed his choice until illiberal criticism threatened his usefulness and he awoke to the fact that his inner needs were not along the direction in which inertia and his conscience had constrained him.

Further consideration is given to the application of the quadratic formalism to evaluate the thermodynamics of binary metallic solutions from experimental data. The use of the thermodynamic relation, in(r1/r2) dN2= 0, in the evaluation of activity data is discussed. The empirical correlations derived previously for enthalpies and entropies of solutions in Part II are shown to be predicted theoretically for a special case. The applicability of the quadratic formalism to the activity coefficients for binary organic solutions is demonstrated. DARKEN&apos; introduced a quadratic formalism describing the composition dependence of the activity coefficient in the terminal regions of binary metallic solutions. In a subsequent paper (Part II) Turkdogan and Darkeen2 extended this formalism to the enthalpy and excess entropy of binary metallic solutions, and showed that the available data for the activity coefficients and heats of mixing of many solid and liquid binary metallic solutions confirm reasonable applicability of the quadratic formalism. Much variation was noted, however, in the extent of the terminal regions from one system to another, commonly from about 10 to 70 at. pct. For the present purpose, equations derived previously need be given only for one of the terminal regions, e.g. region (I), 0 < N2 < N&apos;2: where subscripts 1 and 2 indicate quantities for components 1 and 2 and superscript ° the values at infinite dilution; other terms are: N = atom fraction, y = activity coefficient, = partial molar enthalpy of solution, ?HM = molar heat of solution, ?Sx = excess partial molar entropy, ?Sx = excess molar entropy. In the previous paper, these quantities were evaluated for many solid and liquid binary solutions, and two significant correlations were observed between these thermodynamic quantities pertaining to the terminal regions, thus [10] and [11] Combining Eqs. [9], [l0], and [ll] and rearranging gives a12 -a21 = 1.382R log rº2- 0.08(?S2xº- ?S1xº) [12] Since the second term involving entropies is small and Eqs. 1101 and [ll] are empirical relations, the above equation may be simplified to a12 = 2.74 log rº2 [13] Using the values of a&apos;s and y°&apos;s compiled in Parts I and 11, a12 - a21 is plotted against log(rº2/rº1) in Fig. 1; the line drawn has a slope of 2.74. For Hg-K at 300°C, log(yº2 /yº1)= —5.10, not shown in Fig. 1, and from correlation [13], a12 - a21 = -13.97; this is to be compared with -10.76 derived from the activity data (Part II).

The decomposition of the Ni-Zn eutectoid at 56 wt pct Zn was studied by isothermal transformation. Its progress was followed by metallographic, hardness, and X-ray diffraction methods. Three transformation products were found: lamellar pearlite at high temperatures; an intermediate temperature structure; and martensite at the lower temperaCures. No transition structu,ves were found. THE decomposition of the Ni-Zn eutectoid at 56 wt pct Zn was stuadied as part of a long-range program of study on the eutectoid transformation in alloy systems which do not have one or more components which exhibit allotropy. Available information on the Ni-Zn eutectoid transformation is limited to that presented in connection with the determination of the phase dilagram. No systematic studies of the eutectoid were found in the literature, alkhough the microstructures of the Ni-Zn eutectoid were reported by Tamuru.3 X-ray diffraction data exist for the ß, ß1, y , and y1 phases.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The eutectoid alloy was prepared from "A" nickel shot and Bunker Hill super-purity zinc (99.998 pct).

THE object of a technical paper is to communicate new technical knowledge, the paper being the vehicle of communication and the existence of new knowledge its reason for being. It follows that the development of information worthy of communication, the criterion being novelty, is prerequisite to exercising the privilege of communication. The act of communication is achieved when the reader perceives the nature of the new knowledge, i.e., when he understands it. A paper achieving this objective is an acceptable technical paper. Development of new knowledge has as one of its purposes the increase of the existing state of knowledge and the enjoyment of the benefits derived therefrom. Technical knowledge is a collection of facts so ordered as to make apparent, relations existing between the facts. When the interrelations have been exposed the facts have been interpreted or explained Three broad, overlapping categories of technical papers may be recognized: papers consisting of (a) a report of facts, (b) an explanation of facts, or (c) a combination of a report and an interpretation. Ideally a technical paper should belong to one of the last two categories but current practice is to accept papers belonging to any of the three categories. Based on a small sample drawn from the scientific and engineering literature, the relative frequency of the three types is a: b: c:: 20:1:14. If the sample be limited to engineering literature, the ratios become a:c::2:1; type (b) being nonexistent. This large departure from the ideal is a consequent of the

AS BOTH South Africa and diamond mining are unfamiliar subjects it seems best that on such an occasion as this I should endeavor to reflect the atmosphere of the place and to picture the mines from an industrial rather than from a technical standpoint and, because of long absence, my remarks must necessarily be sketchy and in some particulars not up to date. The preferable route to South Africa is via England, direct steamers from America being inferior as to service and effecting no saving of time. The newer boats are of about 20,000 tons capacity and very comfortable. Seventeen days are required for the voyage and only one stop is made-that at the island of Madiera, three days out. SECONDARY copper1 has &come more or less of a bugbear generally. What is its influence is often the subject of heated argument. The inedapable fact usually quoted is that since in 1929 primary production of copper in the United States was 1,026,348 tons and secondary production was 626,550 tons, there- fore, 0.6 lb. of secondary is produced for every pound of primary, and "How can you get around that?" The matter seems very plain, now that I have reached my conclusions, but they are the result of much laborious study and research. I shall show that&apos; the production of secondary copper is not 0.6 per lb. of primary, in spite of statistical appearances; that the production of secondary is a function of primary production rather than of price; that secondary production has &apos;only a sub-. ordinate influence on the price of copper and then only in abnormal times; that there is not an accumulating reservoir of secondary from which the country is some- time to be drowned in copper, as is believed by some, or a reservoir from which we are going to draw much needed and more or less inexhaustible stores in the future, as is believed by others; and finally, that the United States always produces more copper than it uses and exports the surplus. These are all controversial points, and for that reason and to anticipate argument I have set forth my reasoning in considerable detail.

OTHERS here are far better qualified than I to discuss some of the specific proposals for government regulation of the oil industry. I shall make no attempt to carry oil to Oklahoma. The question of public control, however, is inherent in other branches of the mineral industry in varying degrees, and my comments will be directed mainly toward some of the trends affecting the mineral industry as a whole, as a background for your more specific consideration of oil legislation. A proud American tradition has been the insistence on freedom of competition, on equality of economic opportunity, on a policy of laissez faire. Nowhere has this principle been given wider application than in the mineral industry. The mineral field has been open to all comers, and the job of mineral exploitation has naturally attracted daring and independent spirits. The laws governing conditions of discovery and development, as well as the anti- trust laws, have been devised to foster the spirit of private initiative. The result has been the building of a mineral industry on a scale never before approximated anywhere in the world. The impetus thus gained, the methods, the technique, the financial resources, have been projected be- yond our boundaries and have made the American mineral industry the purveyor to the world for many essential commodities and first in the exploitation of the world&apos;s minerals. Our habits of individual self-reliance and success are deeply ingrained, and there is hardly an individual in the entire mineral field who does not instinctively recoil fro111 the extension of collective control, whether public or private.

I. INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.&apos; There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G., A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. II. THE FIRST, OR COARSEST, SECTION OF THE FIELD. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a. definite ratio.
