The authors are to be complimented on their timely study of solution-hardening effects in a bcc metal. Unfortunately there are some misleading aspects of the paper that should be discussed and clarified which is the purpose of this letter. In particular the writer is concerned about the allusions to rate theory of deformation that are inferred by the authors. This position is taken on the basis first of the "weaker" temperature dependence of the yield and flow stresses of the alloy relative to pure niobium and second of the strong temperature dependence of the Young's modulus of elasticity. It is by now well-recognized that any collection of data points used to determine a flow-stress temperature-dependence relationship must be established under isostructural conditions, i.e., similar or identical sessile and mobile dislocation densities and arrangements. Admittedly this is a formidable experimental undertaking and not what would be expected in an exploratory investigation of the present kind. As an alternative to the former one can consider, however, the temperature dependence of flow stresses at comparable strains. In the present study the authors have elected to use the lower yield stress and ultimate strengths to exhibit the temperature dependence of their alloys except for the data points taken at liquid nitrogen temperature. Here they have used the proportional limit for the yield stress and the fracture stress for the ultimate strength. This seems to be an unrealistic choice particularly in view of the fact that this temperature is below the duc tile-brittle transition region for the alloy and no supporting data points were obtained between -55" and -196°C. If the authors' data in Fig. 2 are extrapolated and data points selected at a constant strain, for example a strain of 0.01, the reader can quickly verify that a temperature dependence exactly paralleling that of pure niobium is obtained.

INTRODUCTION The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent. I. Description of the Clinton Ores and Associated Rocks. The Clinton rocks in Stone valley comprise (1) thick layers of deep-red shale, (2) layers of reddish-gray shale interspersed with beds of sandstone and thin beds of extremely fossiliferous limestone, and (3) yellowish-gray shales alternating with thin layers of olive-colored shales. These layers of shale are all very thin and are at no point massive.' A bed of gray-white sandstone varying in thickness from 12 to 30 ft. occurs in the upper portions of the Clinton shales. This is called the ore sandstone, a name given to it by Rogers and adopted also by the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. It is the surest guide to the presence of the iron-ore bed, which lies below its lower edges at distances varying from 10 to 20 ft. This ore sandstone, in the valley, lies generally at very low inclinations, but often is locally subjected to considerable changes in dip. At its outcrop this ore sandstone weathers very easily and yields a rather sparse crop of stone, composed of dirty, iron-stained boulders. Upon the roads these boulders are quite well rounded, and bear fragments of crinoid stems and other fossil forms. The ore sandstone exhibits at many points evidences of former movements in this very great thickness of the shales, and as it is the only stratum in this series competent to transmit and record stresses due to structural movements, its evidence is of considerable importance in determining the occurrence of movements in times past.

The remarkable phenomena exhibited by the aluminum alloy known as duralumin were discovered during the years 1903-1911 by A. Wilm1,2 and have been described by him and by others. 3 4 5 6 The unusual feature of this alloy is the fact, as was shown by Wilm, that it can be hardened quite appreciably by quenching from temperatures below its melting point followed by aging at ordinary temperatures, which consists merely f allowing the material to stand at these temperatures. The hardness is not produced by the quenching alone but increases during the period of aging, which may be from one to three days. Cohn3, 5 gives data showing the increase of hardness of duralumin during aging, after quenching in water from about 450° C. Upon annealing, the alloy so hardened by aging is softened exactly as is hardened steel. The composition of this alloy usually varies within the following limits: Copper, 3 to 4.5 per cent.; magnesium, 0.4 to 1.0 per cent.; manganese, 0 to 0.7 per cent.; aluminum, balance; iron (as impurities), 0.4 to 1 per cent.; silicon, 0.3 to 0.6 per cent. Its density is about 2.85. It is used only in the forged or rolled condition. This alloy has been produced for some years commercially and is in demand for the fabrication of parts for which both lightness and strength are required, such as for aircraft. Its tensile strength will average 50,000 to 60,000 lb. per. sq. in. (3515 to 4218, kg. per sq. cm.) after appropriate heat treatment, such as that described by Wilm.

THE proportions of manganese and carbon in manganese steel are familiar to all, because manganese-steel castings have been well known for a decade or more in this country. The same alloy has now become a commercial product in the wrought state, and, as not only rails and bars are rolled daily but a great variety of forged and otherwise fabricated shapes are appearing, it may be interesting to mark the progress and, perhaps, to look a little closely into the nature of this important material of engineering.

Elemental titanium has become famous as a space age metal, because of its high strength/ weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. However, the major use is in the form of titanium dioxide pigment, which because of its whiteness, high refractive index, and resulting light-scattering ability, is unequaled for whitening paints, paper, rubber, plastics, and other materials. A relatively minor use is in welding rod coatings, in the form of the mineral rutile. United States consumption of titanium dioxide in concentrates for these applications in 1982 was as follows: pigments, 630,000 st; titanium metal, 31,000 st; and welding rod coatings, 5,000 st. The only commercially important titanium ore minerals at the present time are ilmenite and its alteration products, and rutile. Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1790, as a white oxide which he recovered from menaccanite, a variety of ilmenite occurring as a black sand near Falmouth, Cornwall. Barksdale (1966) stated that the fundamental chemical reactions on which the present day titanium industry is based were known before 1800, although it was not until 1918 that these pigments were available commercially on the American market. Pings (1972) outlined the early history of the titanium industry in the United States, referring to the work of Guise (1964) and others: Mining of titanium minerals in the United States began sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Small quantities of rutile were also produced during that time in North Carolina and Georgia. In 1901 rutile was mined from a deposit near Roseland, VA, and was used in making titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Ilmenite in the deposit was produced as a separate item in 1913, and rutile and ilmenite were obtained from this deposit through 1921. The mining of titanium bearing beach sands began in 1916 near Mineral City and Pablo Beach, FL, for the purpose of making titanium tetrachloride to be used in tracer bullets, flares, and smokescreens. The titanium pigment industry was founded in 1918. By 1928 a large part of the domestic production of rutile, ilmenite, and zircon came from Florida. However production ceased in 1929 in Florida with the mining of newly discovered deposits in Virginia which were mined until 1968. The discovery of new deposits in Florida, and the development of better mining and concentrating methods for low-grade sands, led to a return of activities in this area. The large deposits near Tahawus, NY. were brought into production in 1942 by National Lead Co. (now NL Industries, Inc.), and by 1949 this company was the leading producer of ilmenite in the world. In 1948 the extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The large Trail Ridge sand deposit in Florida was discovered by E. THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yavapi County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending-about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level.

BARITE probably was first mined in the United States in 1845, when a small deposit was operated in Prince William County, Virginia1. The next state to produce barite was Missouri, and according to Weigel2, mining began about 1860. Virginia was the leading producer during the early period of barite mining, but by 1893, Missouri was producing almost an equal amount3. From this date, Virginia, although not the leading producer, furnished large quantities of crude barite until oper-ations gradually declined about 1907. Since 1910, there has been only one producer in Virginia. It is not known when barite was discovered in each of the Virginia areas (Fig. 1), but it is reliably reported that mining on a commercial scale began in Campbell-Pittsylvania counties about 1874; Smyth County in 1877; and in the Russell-Tazewell area about 1890. Barite is widely distributed in Virginia, occurring in nineteen counties. The localities that contain material of some economic value have been grouped into six areas (Fig. 1), each designated by the county or counties in which the barite is found. As many of the smaller areas show a similarity in geologic occurrence, they will be considered in this paper as two major groups; namely, Appalachian Valley and Piedmont Province. The first group, which includes the barite deposits of Russell, Tazewell, Smyth, Botetourt and Roanoke counties, lies northwest of the Blue Ridge and its foothills and southeast of the Appalachian plateaus. The other group includes deposits from the Blue Ridge on the west to the western margin of the Coastal Plain, in Campbell, Pittsylvania, Bedford, Grayson, and Fauquier counties.

SINCE the beginning of .the year 1928 the senior authors and their associates have applied a series of procedures which makes possible the detailed study in situ of the formations traversed by a drill hole before the casing has been landed. They have given the name "electrical coring" to the ensemble of these processes, which now replace in a large measure the mechanical coring performed by the drillers, and permit the gathering of bottom-hole data hitherto unobtainable. Three years have elapsed since the technique and interpretation of these measurements emerged from the experimental stage and entered the field of industrial application on a large scale. The total length of drill holes so far surveyed by the authors and their associates, all over the world, amounts to several millions of feet. Practical and strongly built equipment has been evolved, which permits the examination in a short time of an open hole several thousand feet long. No comprehensive paper has yet been published discussing the essential principles of the processes applied and bringing into evidence their economic interest. This is the object of the present paper.1 Numerous examples of field work performed under varied geological conditions are given, constituting a concrete illustration of the services rendered by the new methods. The study in situ of the formations penetrated by a drill hole is based on the measurement of a given physical factor or parameter associated with these formations. Generally. the measurements are made syste-matically along the whole length of the open hole. The physical factors or parameters which are now utilized by us to this end are: (1) the resistivities of the rocks; (2) their porosity; (3) their electrical anisotropy; (4) their temperature; (5) the resistivity of the muds. This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

Many investigators have used the response of the "dimensionless aquifer" to a unit pressure drop or a unit fluid-withdrawal volume to calculate the performance of an aquifer in supplying water influx to an oil reservoir. In the past, these response functions have been calculated with the aid of the Laplace transform. With the advent of ultra highspeed digital computers, it becomes practical to solve for the response functions with finite-difference techniques. The computer method also permits extension of the dimensionless-aquifer concept to include the nonhomogeneous aquifer wherein the permeability and other properties vary as a function of the space co-ordinates. This paper gives results of calculating the response functions for a series of nonhomogeneous aquifers. Response functions are presented for both linear and radial aquifers whose thickness, permeability-viscosity ratio and porosity-compressibility vary. These functions are new and should prove useful to the petroleum engineer in analyzing the behavior of nonbomogeneous aquifers. Results are presented in the form of charts that can be easily used by the field engineer. INTRODUCTION Aquifers which surround many oil and gas reservoirs have the ability to supply water influx to such reservoirs as oil and gas are withdrawn. This water influx, called natural water drive, provides one of the most effective driving mechanisms for the production of oil and gas. In producing a reservoir, therefore, it behooves one to make the maximum use of natural water drive. To achieve the maximum use, the reservoir engineer must be able to predict the performance of an aquifer under a variety of production schemes that may be proposed for the reservoir. Unfortunately, the physical properties which dictate aquifer behavior often are known only within limits. Seldom do wells penetrate the porous strata of the aquifer. Even when they do, quantitative information regarding porosity, permeability and water compressibility is seldom available. It is known, however, that the water efflux from most aquifer systems is governed by a single, relatively simple, linear, partial differential equation. Also, the general physical location of the aquifer boundaries often are known. A technique originall proposed by Hurst1 and van Everdingen and Hurst2 has been found useful in analyzing reservoirs in this situation. The idea was later expanded by van Everdingen, Timmerman and McMahan3 to include the mathematical technique of least-squares fitting. This latter method will be referred to as the VTM method. The basic assumptions of the VTM method include the following. 1. The location of the physical boundaries of the aquifer are known. 2. The flow conditions at these physical bound-daries are also known. 3. The aquifer is homogeneous; e.g., thickness, permeability, water compressibility and porosity are constant throughout. In the VTM method, a material balance is made on the fluids entering and leaving the reservoir. In the balance equations, the water-influx term is represented as the product of the water influx from an arbitrarily-selected, dimensionless aquifer system times an unknown conversion number. This balance can be formed as many times as there are data points in the history of the reservoir. Each time, the conversion number can be evaluated. If the reservoir engineer has picked the correct dimensionless aquifer to represent the real aquifer, the conversion number remains constant for all balances that have been made over the history period. If such a situation occurs, the reservoir engineer can then predict the performance of the reservoir for any type of production scheme by using the function associated with that particular dimensionless system and the derived conversion number. FOR many years kettles used in the melting and refining of lead and other nonferrous metals and alloys have been made of cast iron. The logic of this probably lies in the fact that cast iron has been known as a material of construction for vessels of this type much longer than steel, and satisfactory fabrication from it has been more easily accomplished and better understood. As the capacity of lead refineries has increased, it has been only natural to increase the size of kettles. Today kettles of 150 to 250 tons are not uncommon. As the size of the kettles increased and better shapes were designed, the uniformity of material of construction became more important. Records kept over comparatively long periods of time have shown that the length of service of kettles has not been uniform. Many causes contribute to this and the importance of each has not yet been evaluated. Kettle design, kettle setting, method of firing and material of construction have been changed from time to time to obtain better service, but the variation in length of service is still great. A kettle may fail during the first few heats or may last through more than one thousand heats. The purpose of this article is not to present the conclusions of a finished piece of research on kettle manufacture and use, but to present a series of observations made over considerable time in the hope that others will publish data and that all may be correlated into a logical scheme which will result in better service and longer kettle life.

Minerals long have been important commodities in international trade. As an inevitable result, the governments of the world have employed a wide variety of programs that affect the flow of trade. Roughly speaking, we may distinguish between the desire of more developed countries (MDCs) like the United States, western Europe, and Japan to control imports of minerals and the concern of less developed countries (LDCs), like India, about exploiting and exporting their minerals. The terminology used to describe different countries and the classification of specific countries into groups is unsettled and often changing. The poorest countries have been characterized as backward, undeveloped, underdeveloped, and developing. The problem seems to be in selecting a term that is both accurate and polite. Less developed seems, for reasons outlined by Hagen [pp. 51-57], the most convenient term. The borderline between an LDC and an MDC is always open to dispute. Objective measures are difficult to develop because of deficiencies in basic data, and enormous conceptual problems arise in making valid comparisons from even good data [see Hagen, pp. 7-28]. Thus, policies of the MDCs can be evaluated chiefly by using a few basic arguments for protectionist attitudes towards international trade. In dealing with the LDCs, a more far-ranging evaluation that covers general economic policy goals, the role of foreign investment, and the indirect effects of trade is required. This duality breaks down when trying to deal with the depressed areas in an MDC; here the issues are more akin to those associated with problems in an LDC. Similarly, variants of arguments used in LDCs appear in debates about foreign investments in MDCs. The whole discussion of minerals in LDCs, moreover, has obvious implications for MDCs like Canada and Australia. They, too, must face problems about the best utilization of their resources. Gentlemen of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to-night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now possess. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it.
