Investigations of the Zr-Pt system, by metallography, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction, determined the phase relationshifis from 0 to 50 at. pct Pt. Phase fields in the Pt-~ich region were outlined, and three intermetallics (ZrPt, Zr2Pt, and ZrPtd were located. A eutectic between Zr and Zr2Pt, and a eutectoid veaction between Zr and a Zr + Zr2Pt, were established. The maximum solubility of Pt in P Zr was approximately 13.5 wt pct, as opposed to less than 1 wt pct solubility in a Zr. EARLIER work on the Zr-Pt system was limited to an X-ray study on the intermetallic compound, ZrPt3, by H. J. Wallbaum,1 It was reported that ZrPt3 existed at 86.52 wt pct Pt, and had a hexagonal structure, isomorphous with TiNi3. Wallbaum's data revealed the following structural particulars: a = 5.633A, c = 9.21A, and c/a = 1.635A. Other studies allied to Zr-Pt alloys concerned only 1) Pt-rich alloys (0.05 to 5.0 pct Zr) for corrosion resistance,2 2) a Zr-base alloy with 5 pct Pt and 0.124 pct C for oxidation resistance,3 and 3) electroclad-ding of Zr with Pt for in-pile corrosion resistance of Zr to uranyl sulphate. 4 Metallographic, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction techniques were applied to accurately resolve the phase relationships in the 0 to 50 at. pct (68.2 wt pct) Pt region, and to outline the phase fields in the Pt-rich area. Three intermediate phases: Zr2Pt, ZrPt, and ZrPt3, were also established by the same methods. PROCEDURE Melting stock for this program was of the highest purity obtainable. The Zr was iodide crystal bar with a low hafnium content of about 0.05 wt pct (Westinghouse "Grade 3"). The as-received Zr was treated to remove the surface film of corrosion product that resulted from a standard autoclave grade designation test. Next, the bars were processed to yield material suitable for arc melting and free of contaminants. Sheet platinum metal (Baker and Co. "Grade 2") was used for alloying additions. This material con-

IN the preceding chapter on thermochemistry and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases and in the following chapter on fuel combustion the main emphasis is placed on the equilibrium or "static" conditions. This equilibrium viewpoint is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or paths followed between initial and final states. The questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling its operation, and also in understanding its limitations. Any treatment of kinetic factors in the open hearth such as is attempted here and in Chapter 22 must at present be largely qualitative and incomplete. We are only beginning to get quantitative data on rates of reaction and diffusion at high temperatures, as indicated in Chapter 15. Empirical data in the literature on furnace operating rates do not help much to illuminate the details of gas-flow patterns and the complexities of heat flow in the many parts of the furnace system. This chapter is intended to give the reader an introduction to the problems of the flow of gases through the furnace system and the flow of heat in this system. An adequate discussion would require several times the space available here; it is possible here only to outline a few fundamentals and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow peculiar to the open hearth. Several good general treatments of these subjects may be found in the literature (see references at the end of the chapter). For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance. They are also important to the operation of the process, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system. The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

A phenomenological theory for a one-dimensional unstable miscible displacement similar in type to the Buckley-Leverett model but including the effects of mixing is proposed An equation giving the fractional flow of pure solvent through an oil phase containing dissolved solvent is derived including the effects of gravity and nonbomogeneities. Numer ical integration of the resulting pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations gives volumes of dissolved and undissolved solvent as functions of space and time. Parameters in the model which characterize mixing due to dispersion were determined from experimental data; the parmeters correlated with viscosity ratio. The results indicate that the rate of dispersive mixing is proportional to volumetric flow rate Incorporated into our equations were Koval's heterogeneity factor H. which characterizes mixing due to channeling. This allowed satisfactory predictions of displacement behavior observed in horizontal floods in nonhomo-geneous cores; but in most cases the values of H which we used were considerably larger than those used by Koval. INTRODUCTION It has been shownl,2,3 that for favorable viscosity ratios, the diffusion equation with convection satisfactorily describes the behavior of a miscible displacement in a porous media. Numerous attempts to develop a satisfactory mathematical description for the case of unfavorable viscosity ratio have been reported, but they have met with only partial success. These attempts, which are reviewed by oval! have taken two approaches: (1) development of a flow model akin to the Buckley-Leverett approach for immiscible displacement neglecting the effects of mixing5,6 and (2) simultaneous application of Darcy's Law for flow and the diffusion equation with a convection term for mass transfer.7,8,9 We set out to construct a mathematical model of Type 1 including, though, the effects of mixing. Based upon a set of hypotheses, we derived a pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations which describe in a one-dimensional system the combined effects of flow and mixing. To work with these equations it was necessary to develop a fractional flow formula. The combined system was integrated numerically using the method of characteristics. In our equations the mixing process is characterized by four parameters. Three of these, labeled ß, P1 and P2, account for dispersive type mixing. The fourth is the heterogeneity factor H, proposed by Koval to account for channeling due to nonhomogeneities in the porous media. Values of the parameters which would cause agreement between theory and experiment were determined by trial-and-error for miscible floods conducted in horizontal cores of both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials. Calculations were also performed for vertical floods in homogeneous cores. The purpose of this paper is (1) to present the details of the mathematical analysis, (2) to present the results of the calculations, (3) to consider what light the results shed on the mixing process in an unstable miscible displacement, and (4) to provide a firmer foundation for the correlation technique developed by Koval for predicting the behavior of unstable miscible floods. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The problem is to construct a mathematical model which describes in one dimension the observed behavior in an unstable miscible displacement. The approach is phenomenological in that the equations are based on assumptions which violate certain physical precepts known to apply to the displacement phenomenon. However, the assumptions do allow us to account mathematically for the more essential phenomena. The work is of value if we can quantitatively predict experimental results which heretofore could not be predicted, even though the synthetic nature of the model belies complete explanation of the observations. We assume that the system is comprised of two contiguous flowing phases. One phase, which we call free solvent, has the properties of pure solvent. INTRODUCTION The stratified deposits of the coal measures are strongly laminated and exhibit a high degree of anisotropy. The stronger rocks in the sequence possess joints and shear planes, the coal itself has a closely spaced cleat pattern, and the softer rocks are capable of flowage. To calculate the general distribution of stress in such a medium by analytical means based on the theories of elasticity is difficult, and has not yet been satisfactorily achieved. Nevertheless, some estimate is required to aid the design of supporting pillars and permit the correct siting of main roadways. This is important when laying out districts for longwall extraction, particularly if the results of previous experience are not available in the area to be exploited. Although elastic stress analyses, including finite element analysis, may not be very appropriate, the basic equilibrium conditions will apply. These, combined with logical deductions based on observed fact, can be used to give appropriate solutions which experience has shown to be capable of giving acceptable results in the design of pillars associated with longwall workings. Constancy of cover load is one of the fundamental equilibrium conditions. When mining below ground, the cover is not removed, therefore the average vertical load after mining must equal the initial cover load. If mining produces a local decrease in load in any particular area, it must be balanced by an equivalent increase in load nearby. Bending moments in the strata above are capable of compensating for the turning moments which this redistribution of load may produce, and the existence of a "rear abutment", much discussed between 1950 and 1960, is not an essential equilibrium requirement. If the distribution of vertical stress is plotted three-dimensionally, then the load on any small element of area 6S will be o.6S, where o is the average stress. This also represents the volume of the "stress envelope" which lies above 6s. By making the individual areas very small and summing together, it is possible to show that the total load on any particular area can be found by calculating the volume of the stress distribution envelope which lies above it. A similar consideration applies to the stress distribution in a two-dimensional situation. If the stress distribution curve is drawn, then the area below any portion will represent the load per unit depth of section. For example, Figure 1 represents the possible stress distribution across a caved waste and associated ribside. If AW is the load deficiency [ ] These loads must balance, therefore area AW = AS, and if one can be deduced, the other will then be known. Attempts have been made to measure stress distributions in the ribside and in the waste. Stress meters in soft rocks such as the coal measures have not proved very effective. Those based on the measurement of strain have experienced difficulty in strata capable of flowage, high modulus stress meters suffer from cross sensitivity, and overcoming to obtain absolute stress is almost impossible. Load measuring instruments left in the waste have also proved largely ineffective, mainly as a result of the difficulties of protecting the leads in a caving environment. Certain logical deductions, however, can be made about the conditions in the waste. CONDITIONS IN THE WASTE Over the area of the waste the surface trough which develops is remarkably consistent, despite the geological variations which occur from coalfield to coalfield. In Britain, an accuracy of 210% is claimed for subsidence prediction based on width of extraction and depth of cover (National Coal Board, 1975). The subsidence in the USA is more variable (Adamek and Jeran, 1981), particularly with respect to the point of inflexion, but the same general pattern occurs. At the shallower depths the somewhat harder roof strata involved in the caving in the USA may suffer less compaction, giving reduced values of subsidence. THE binary aluminum-silicon alloys have certain characteristic advantages which are now well known, and these alloys have come into considerable use during the past several years.1 Their field of application has been limited to a certain extent, however, by their low yield point and hardness, low endurance limit, and relatively poor machining characteristics. These properties are improved by the addition of copper, and the ternary aluminum-silicon-copper alloys constitute an important class. The addition of copper decreases the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-silicon alloys and increases specific gravity. Magnesium is a hardening addition which seems to have relatively little effect on corrosion resistance, and which, of course, reduces specific gravity. The object of the work described in this paper was the development of alloys and heat treatments for the production of sand castings and permanent-mold castings having substantially all the advantages of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys together with mechanical properties improved to a degree permitting wider application.

T HE OPEN FORUM on this subject called by Mr. Hoover at the recent meeting of the Institute' brought out a large number of very able papers, and a very full discussion of all the problems involved. The criticisms of the bituminous industry were: 1. That it was over-developed with the possible output nearly 50 per cent. in excess of the present requirements; that during the summer there were plenty of cars and no orders, and during the winter there were plenty of orders but no cars. 2. That the mines were not properly developed from an engineering standpoint, and that the recovery of the coal varies from 50 per cent. to 95 per cent. 3. That this industry, employing over 600,000 men, could, if running full time, release 100,000 men for other work. 4. That the studies made by the engineers of the Fuel Administration showed that the cost of production increased with a loss of time and that with a 50 per cent. operation the increase in cost was about 40 per cent.

The lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word 'metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chry-sos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " chrouts " and " chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first not.ions of the reduction of metallic ores, by

It is safe to assert that in cities generally, the fuel of the future for all domestic, as well as for most manufacturing and metallurgical purposes, will be gaseous fuel. The immense advantages which gas possesses in facility and cheapness of distribution, cleanliness, and economy of manipulation, and the facilities which it offers for utilizing in almost all cases a much higher percentage of the total quantity of heat produced, than it is possible to do with any kind of solid fuel, are facts which will vastly more than compensate for the comparatively small loss of heating power, which will be found necessary in the turning of the solid fuel into gas upon a large scale, and which, in the bpinion of the writer, will, at no distant day, command attention, and will ultimately result in a revolution in our use of fuel. The employment of gaseous fuel upon a scale of any considerable magnitude, has hitherto been almost entirely confined to the utilization of the waste gases of the iron smelting furnace for heating the blast, and the rapidly increasing use, for certain metallurgical pur-

ThE exact type of fluid flow which occurs in a solidifying ingot is important in determining subsequent grain structure. This has been shown in studies of natural Convection" and of forced stirring or other disturbances of the melt."16 We shall explicitly argue that a complement to the existing natural flow in an ingot should be more effective than other types of flow in promoting the columnar-to-equiaxed transition. The ultimate effects of fluid flow upon structure is one of the topics of solidification that we have investigated in the alloy system Pb-Sb, under conditions simulating casting. In Fig. 1, the essential features of a bidirectional growth apparatus are shown; horizontal freezing from water-cooled faces within a low-thermal-conductivity lavite boat is a reasonable simulation of an ingot section. Details such as the furnace and thermocouples are omitted in order to show the location of four permanent. magnets, each with a pole separation of 21 in. providing a central field of about 1000 Gauss. When coupled with a dc current imposed through appropriate connections made at the cooled faces, a flow of fluid is produced as shown schematically. This technique described by Pfann and ~orsi" is ideal for our purpose since the flow indicated is the same as that we observe to occur naturally in this system. Components of 99.999 pct purity were used for study and all due precautions were taken in alloy preparation to avoid contaminants. Sections of the specimens were taken to ensure results representative of the interior as well as the surface of specimens. All proportions of equiaxed and columnar regions were measured by tracing the etched grain structures onto graph paper and simply counting squares. Four alloys were examined at superheats of 40" * 5°C and 100" * 9°C. Preliminary tests had shown that no appreciable enhancement of structure was obtained with magnetic field alone, so that this condition is not reported; it should nevertheless be noted that other configurations of magnetic field will reduce convection and thus enhance columnar growth.'8 For the tests reported the magnetic field was applied to a specimen by bringing the four preassembled magnets to a position 2 mm from an outer tube immediately after the ingot was poured. The dc current of 30 amps passed through the sample throughout the entire solidification cycle, resulting in a power dissipation of 9 w per sq cm of interface. This may be compared to the evolution of latent heat of approximately 18 w per sq cm. Table I contains the results of this experiment in terms of the total area ratio, equiaxed/columnar grains, as a function of the field interactions, solute concentrations, and superheats employed. The total structure of the ingot is seen to be most influenced when both the field and current are applied simultaneously; when current acts separately, little effect may be noted in spite of the heat supplied. In addition, the change in structure from the no field-no current case to the field-current condition is more pronounced at the higher superheat, and the higher the concentration of antimony. An example of the grain refinement, as well as the increased equiaxed zone, is shown in Fig. 2. It is now important to prove that there is indeed an increase in fluid flow due to the presence of the field-current interaction; this is done by temperature measurements in the liquid metal. Up to the present time few attempts have been made to produce hard nonmagnetic materials by heat treatment of austenitic steels. The usual result has been to cause them to pass into the martensitic stage, thus destroying to a great extent the typical austenitic properties, since this involves a transition of a portion of the iron from a face-centered to a body-centered type of atomic arrangement. High-strength nonmagnetic materials such as might be provided by properly hardening austenite are required in the electrical industry for different machine parts. In Europe nonmagnetic retainer rings for restraining the end-turns of the rotor windings in turbo-alternators have been developed as a special application of high-strength austenite. In testing1 a 28,000-kva. three-phase Siemens turbogenerator running at 3000 r.p.m. at full load current, the losses in the short-circuit test were 450 kw. for the magnetic ring and 286 kw. for the nonmagnetic, and the difference should be attributable to the magnetic ring. The differences in temperatures during the same test are given in Table 1 and these show the advantage of a nonmagnetic over a magnetic retainer ring. Hardening in this case was obtained by cold working, such as hammering, rolling or some means for stretching the steel while at a temperature near 500" C. THE investigation of aluminum alloy systems prior to 1923 was severely handicapped by the low purity of the best aluminum available. However, by that time, the electrolytic purification of aluminum had been developed by the Aluminum Company of America,(1)? and in May, 1923, there was initiated, under the direction of E. H. Dix, Jr.,(2) a program for the investigation of the aluminum-alloy systems using the purest electrolytically refined aluminum. Up to the present time 15 papers (a) have been published, most of which are on the binary aluminum systems. Work is now in progress on the ternary systems, and it seems probable that most of the future work will be on ternary systems. Therefore this survey of the binary aluminum systems investigated up to the present time (the sixteenth paper of the series) concludes the first phase of this program. Certain qualitative relations between corresponding portions of the various binary diagrams as well as between different parts of the same diagram were noted some time ago by R. S. Archer.(4) In the present . paper these relations and others are considered quantitatively by the application of well-known thermodynamic equations or by newly discovered empirical relations No attempt will be made here to present the history of the develop-ment of the thermodynamic equations defining equilibrium or their application to metallic systems, although a list of references is given at the end of this paper for those who are interested in this phase of the

IT IS to be. read in Western newspapers that Hon. S. S. Arentz who introduced H. R. 7736, 'has repudiated it, that certain mining men in Utah and Nevada say that they will fight it "until hell freezes over." It is to be read in more temperate expressions that "the eminent engineers who drafted the bill exhibited a woeful misunderstanding of Western sentiment and opinion." Furthermore, it is averred that there is no need for revising the mining laws, that we have got along pretty well under the existing laws, etc. Such statements are so surprising in view of, the facts of record that it is hard to believe that the oppon-ents of the bill, who make them, are well informed, or that they represent general opinion. It will be useful therefore to review the record of the case. Our GOOD OLD MINING LAWS We have indeed got on well in our mining industry, but that has not been by virtue; of our good old mining laws. Rather has it been in spite of them. Ever since the Richmond-Eureka case in the '70s there has been litigation arising from them. Early in the '80s the apex law was discarded by common consent in Leadville, and it has been ignored in every district of flat-lying ore deposits ever since. The great mines of the present time are the porphyry copper deposits. At Bingham, Ely, Ray, Chino, Miami, Clifton and Ajo the apex law is simply inapplicable. A law that is inapplicable to the modern conditions of mining may be an old law, but it can not properly be characterized as a "good" law. For such reasons, and many others of weight, there has been a demand for revision of the mining laws; dat-ing ,back at least three decades. President Roosevelt appointed a commission to advise respecting the question, said commission comprising. Dr. James Douglas (chairman), John Hays Hammond, D: M. Barringer, Walter B: Devereux, and William B. Mather. This committee was unanimous on the following points:

ABSTRACT investigations in recent years have shown that rock wettability can exert a profound influence on the displacement of oil by water from oil producing reservoirs. Core analyses frequently show oil recoveries from preferentially water-wet rock to be significantly greater than those from preferentially oil-wet rock. Thus, an accurate prediction of water-drive or waterflood oil recovery is dependent on the evaluation of reservoir rock wettability. Laboratory and field studies have been undertaken to examine and develop methods which may be used to measure rock wettahililiy, to investigate factors which may alter the wettability of reservoir rock, and to determine the wettability of specific reservoirs. It has been found that measurement of the rate and volume of spontaneous imbibition of the wet-ting phase by a rock is a reliable and reproducible test for semi-quantitarive determination of preferential rock wettability. Laboratory tests have shown that the wettability of reservoir rock may depend on both the crude oil composition and the rock type. Field and laboratory tests have indicated that coring flulids and core handling techniques can cause significant changes in the wettability of rock surfaces. However, a few fluids, brine in particular, appear not to affect core wettability and may be used when coring to determine reservoir wettability. Core handling and packing procedures have been developed which preserve core wettability during storage and laboratory testing. The wetfability characteristics of six reservoirs have been evaluated by wettabilify tests performed in the field on fresh cores cut with brine or special water-base muds. The tests indicated that all six reservoirs are water wet; however, the de-gree differed from one reservoir to another. INTRODUCTION Although surface properties of reservoir rock and interfacial characteristics of rock, crude oil, and water systems have been discussed for many years, the full significance of these properties to the production of oil is still in the process of evaluation. It is known, however, that one surface characteristic—preferential wettability of the reservoir rock—-is of paramount importance when the reservoir is being produced by water-flood or water-drive mechanisms. The importance of rock wettability has been pointed out by several authors'.',%* who have found that pref- erentially water-wet cores flood more efficiently than oil-wet cores; that is, more oil is recovered from water-wet cores in the early flooding stages than from oil-wet cores. Other authors'," indicate that waterflood oil recovery from cores of intermediate wettability may be greater than that from either strongly water-wet or strongly oil-wet cores. These recent investigations emphasize that the true wettability of a reservoir must be known before the performance of waterflood or water-drive reservoirs can be accurately evaluated. When reservoir wettability is to be determined by core analysis, precautions must be taken to maintain the original wettability which can be altered readily during coring5 nd testing.' In the coring operation the core may be partially or completely penetrated by the drilling fluid which, if it contains surface active materials, may drastically change the wettability of the core. Also, improper core handling during stcrage and testing may change its wettability because of evaporation of fluids or exposure to oxygen or surface active contaminants. One purpose of this paper is to discuss methods for obtaining, preserving, and testing cores without altering their original wettability. In addition, the results of wettability tests on fresh and preserved cores from six reservoirs are presented where special precautions were taken to obtain samples without altering their wettability during the coring operation.

This was announced at a meeting of the Executive Board of the Council held at the Cosmos Club in Washington on Sept. 30. Dean Cooley assumes office at once. The new head of organized engineering is a past president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and has a long record of distinguished service in education, under the government and in private capacities. He was born in Canandaigua, N. Y., March 28, 1855, and was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1878. With his classmate, Dr. Ira N. Hollis, he was ordered to the U.S.S. "Quinnebaug," then fitting out at the Norfolk Navy Yard preparatory to a cruise in the Mediterranean.

The adsorption mechanism of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) on mercury in potassium fluoride solutions at natural, near neutral pH was investigated. Difler-ential capacity combined with electrocapillary measurements on a dropping mercury electrode were found to provide a sensitive and reliable approach. A shift in the electro capillary maximum (or the point-of-zero-charge) towards positive polarization of the surface due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion for mercury surfaces. The amine was shown to adsorb competitively with potassium ion on mercury. Through correlation of the adsorption density of the amine, calculated from the thermodynamic analyses of the electrocapillary curves, and of the diflerential capacity curves, the adsorbed state and the orientation of the amine at the interface were considered. The similarities and the differences in the adsorption behavior of the amine on mercury and on such ionic solids as quartz, silver sulfide, and silver iodide were evaluated. With the promise of flotation providing a cheap and large-scale process for the upgrading of low-grade ores and magnetic concentrates, the iron ore industry has made a sustained search over the years for a flotation reagent of general applicability and high selectivity. Having shelves full of commercial reagents already on hand and anticipating more, both the users and the suppliers are in need of an experimental approach sensitive enough to differentiate the individual characteristics in each group of reagents. Therefore, the adsorption behavior of various flotation reagents on mineral surfaces from aqueous solutions has been a subject of much investigation. The current view of adsorption based on the electrical double-layer theory is formulated on the assumption that certain ions in solution act as potential-determining ions. In much of the work reported in the literature on long cores. true connate water value, probably have not been obtained because of insufficient flow of 011 to attain equilibrium. A -.satisfactory method for establishing connate water in long cores has been developed in which oil flow is maintained until no additiona1 water is displaced. INTRODUCTION Long cores have been used by sev-erals investigators in an effort to evaluate the efficiency of oil recovery for various producing schemes. The effects of many variables such as rate of displacement. pressure drop, volume of displacing medium, gas-oil ratio, inter-facial tension, and others have been investigated, and the merits of gas drive have been compared with water drive. In the older experiments no connate water was used. but in the more recent stndies the philosophy of the experiment calls for a core containing oil and connate water (irreducible water) as the starting point of the experiment. The method generally used to establish this condition in long cores involves dynamic' displacement wherein one or more phases are forced through the core. flow being maintained at a constant rate or at a constant pressure until a steady state is reached wherein there is no change of saturation with time. It is one purpose of this paper to point out that in much of the work reported in the literature true connate water values probably have not been obtained. The reason for this failure is pointed out. and a method for obtaining more reliable connate water values on long cores is presented. It is impossible at this time to completely evaluate the effect on the conclusions in the earlier papers resulting from the failure to obtain true connate water in the long cores, but some data are presented which indicate that serious errors may he present in many cases. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Cores cut front outcrop sandstones (Strawn. Torpedo, and Elgin sandstones) with permeabilities of the order of 300 md were used. The major experiments were made with a core 18-in. long and 2-in. in diameter. Cores of the same diameter but only 12-in. long were used in a few tests? and in some work a core I-in. in diameter and 11-in. long was used. These materials were all somewhat bentonitic. 'To reduce the effect of such constituents, one of the cores (Torpedo No. 10) on which the most work was performed was acid extracted at the start of the experiment. Brine containing 50,000 ppm chloride and naphtha (Stoddard's Solvent) were used as the water and oil phases, respectively. The core was mounted in a rubber sleeve which forms the inner lining of a brass cylinder. In this arrangement2 the rubber sleeve is forced against the core by applying pressure to water in the annular space between the rubber sleeve and the brass cylinder wall. The core is therefore sealed in rubber so that all fluids introduced at the input end of the core flow through the core. With this equipment the core may be easily removed for inspection and analysis. Also, other cores may be introduced for study with no extra time for preparation such as is required when plastic mounting is used. When pressure or conductivity measurements are desired at intermediate points along tile length of the core, the brass cylinder comprising the outer jacket of the core holder is cut into section, of the desired length. Each section is then made up as an individual unit with its own rubber sleeve (see Fig. 1). The individual units are then butted up against a ring of plastic or other insulating material which carries an electrical contact for resistivity measurements and an opening which can be used for the measurements of fluid pressures. The individual units are forced tightly against the plastic ring separators and held in place with several tie rods. Inlet and outlet end butts of the same diameter as the core and several inches in length are provided to control the introduction and withdrawal of fluids and to complete the arrangement for sealing the core within the rubber sleeve. Fluid flow is maintained either by applying pressure to the liquid confined in a reservoir or by the use of a gear pump. The latter is preferable where continuous flow at a moderate rate over a long time interval is desired since a small volume of liquid can be readily recirculated using filters to prevent plugging of the core. A proper consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. Manufacture of Wrought Iron The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man's needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today's scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort's invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture.
