In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

Dean Roscoe Pound, of Harvard Law School, in addressing the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division on Feb. 22, 1934, said, "When you are able to work out a program that is mechanically feasible, that is economicaIly advisable, and which seems in your judgment, which is just as good as that of anyone, to be politically wise, you will not have very much trouble in the end in inducing the courts of today to find that it is legally sound." The purpose of this paper is to show: first, legal conditions necessary to promote conservation and stabilization; and second, to suggest operating procedure when those legal conditions are established. The proposal is mechanically feasible and economically advisable. A growing public understanding should make it politically wise. The disappointing progress in the development of conservation and stabilization can be attributed to the lack of two legal concepts as integral parts of oil and gas law; i.e., (1) a practical substitute for the capture rule, (2) collective ownership control for the individual oil and gas pool. When these two concepts are established on an equitable basis, conservation and stabilization procedure will become a comparatively simple process, more or less automatic in its adaptation and operation. Establishing these concepts is the function of the law-making agencies and might well be left to them for discussion except that the mechanical processes that give them form and substance must first be developed by the engineer. A Substitute for the Capture Rule Much has been written on these subjects, but the most concrete statement that has come to the attention of this writer is the following from an article by Charles G. Haglund in the Kentucky Law Journal of May, 1934: The Oxford1 case is not only authority for the proposition that it is competent for the legislature to modify the old property law of capture with respect to oil and gas but that it may also delegate such authority to a subordinate body.

It was not for the purpose of asserting any superior knowledge or authority, but simply of clearing up, in greater detail, some points casually mentioned in Mr. Scott's able paper, that the writer entered, some two years ago, into the discussion which that paper initiated. In such matters there is always room for differences of judgment, as well as for additional data, which may modify or complete the conclusions even of the best authorities. Those who are immersed in the duties of practical administration or work in the field, and who, being remote from the great scientific national libraries, are obliged to rely on their private collections, and to supplement them by their recollections of earlier studies, labor under special disadvantages in such a discussion; and it must be to the scientific and engineering world a matter for gratitude that Mr. Lyman has been willing to give the benefit of his advantages in this respect. Mr. Lyman would, however, doubtless at once disclaim the conclusion that his masterly summary constitutes " the last word " on this subject, and welcome further evidence, comment and criticism, such as the various contributors may continue to offer. This, therefore, is the motive, and must be the excuse, of the introduction by the writer of the following observations. 1 Raw coal from Truax-Traer Coal Co.'s Burning Star Slope mine, Jackson County, Ill., is brought to the surface by the new 42-in. slope belt haulage conveyor at the rate of 850 tph. The loading system shown above employs four storage tracks, two tail tracks for loading, and four 25-hp hoists, operating in pairs, and coupled to two dolly cars to move the trains of cars through the tipple. The system has a capacity for loading 1800 tph. One operator is needed to load on each of two shifts. A third man working for a few hours on night shift sets up for the morning cycle. Railroad crews bring in empties placing them in the storage yard, twenty cars to the track. Trains of empties are pulled through to the tail track and loaded on the return; hoists at opposite ends pull the trains in each direction. [ ] 2 Pairs of hoist drums are interconnected electric- ally by a Trench lay cable buried between the tracks. When one hoist operates moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The effect of copper on steel has been studied by numerous investigators. Before modern testing methods had been developed, blacksmiths noted red shortness in iron, the cause for which was ascribed to the presence of copper. Numerous papers have been published on the corrosion of steels containing various amounts of copper, and a few writers have discussed the effect of copper on the mechanical properties of steel. The purpose of the investigation described in the following paper was to obtain additional data on the mechanical properties of medium-carbon steel containing small quantities of copper. Among those who have published results of mechanical tests on copper steels are Ball,' who states that copper increases the tensile strength and hardness but lowers the elongation. Stead2 states that copper steels closely resemble nickel steels containing equivalent percentages of nickel, as regards tensile strength, resistance to shock, corrosion and hardness. Wigham3 found that copper in small amounts had no injurious effect on steel. Breui14 found that with 1 per cent. carbon, copper lessened the brittleness of steel and in low-carbon steel it increased the tensile strength and lowered the ductility slightly. H. H. Campbell5 states that copper up to 0.25 per cent. slightly raises the elastic limit, elongation and reduction of area.

The concern for air pollution goes back centuries as will be seen from this quotation: "Strife and coal, it seems, have a hand-in-hand historical relationship. It was thought by some . . . in the Middle Ages that burning coal filled the air with dangerous poisons. So great was the concern that in 1306 King Edward I of England passed the first and unquestionably the harshest, air pollution legislation edict that history will record. His proclamation declared the use of coal an act punishable by death." As related to coal mining the air pollution problem is primarily that of its customer when using the fuel. Thus the major impact relates to markets for coal rather than the actual mining operation itself. In the vicinity of the coal mine the problem is principally related to fugitive dust from roads, transfer facilities, loading facilities, crushers. etc., and particulate matter (dust or fly ash) from thermal dryers and air cleaning tables. FUGITIVE DUST Most state air pollution regulatory agencies now have rules and regulations requiring control of fugitive dust. This refers to dust generated from normal processing operations. A typical air pollution control agency regulation reads as follows: "Fugitive Dust" "No person shall cause, suffer, allow, or permit any material to be handled, transported, or stored; or a building, its appurtenances, or a road to be used, constructed, altered, repaired, or demolished without taking reasonable precautions to prevent particulate matter from becom-

In spite of the artificial supports which are provided to reinforce the mine roof and prevent failures, roof falls continue to occur very frequently in the mines due to the very unpredictable geological conditions and the dynamic nature of the mining operations. In fact, roof fall is still one of the largest contributor to coal mine fatalities. The design of a roof support plan is often based on arbitrary criterions due to the unpredictable behaviour of the rocks under the mining conditions. The failure of a mine roof which ultimately results in a roof fall and contribute to mine hazards, is caused following a gradual degradation in its physical conditions. At a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr. C. B. Dudley, in his presiden-tial address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective requiremeuts of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical authorities lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far ill advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel. VARIOUS phases of the embrittlement of solid copper containing oxygen by the action of reducing gases at high temperatures through the work of many experimenters are familiar to readers of metallurgical literature. In 1900, Heyn1 recorded observations of copper being heated in hydrogen with the development of fine cracks, the result of the formation of steam within the metal through the action of hydrogen on the copper oxide usually found in copper. Archbutt,2 in 1905, published the results of experiments, showing that all oxygen can be removed from copper by heating to redness, for several hours, in hydrogen. Intercrystalline cracks and extreme brittleness developed. Archbutt attributed the brittleness to the reduction of oxides present in the copper. Bengough and Hill,3 in 1910, encountered the now well-known embrittlement at the outset of their investigation and stated in their paper: It soon became evident that the effect of any heat treatment depended largely on the presence or absence of reducing gases in the atmosphere of the furnace, as well as on its temperature. Hence it became necessary to adopt a somewhat elaborate scheme of heat treatment. The authors found embrittlement in separate experiments due to both hydrogen and carbon monoxide and concluded that: "The gases ruin the alloys after being heated to about 650° C. in their presence."

Previous studies of plastic deformation of metals have emphasized the important role of bending and constraints during strain under relatively pure stresses.1"5 Some new phenomena such as early conjugate slip6 and polygonization7 are intimately concerned with the relief of bending stresses, the former by slip and the latter by a process analogous to re-crystallization. However, few analyses of the bending deformation of single crystals were found in the literature, and those8,9 are sufficiently previous to the modern interpretations of slip to invite further investigation in this area. The transverse bending mode of testing, using the two-point loading method, was selected because the center portion of the specimen may be considered as under a theoretically pure bending stress with a uniform bending moment. Considerable attention was given to both the lattice distortion and flow characteristics of the crystals during deformation. Experimental Proeedare A specimen under the action of equal and opposite couples at both ends is said to undergo pure bending. The shear and moment diagrams of a specimen under the two-point loading method of transverse bending are shown in Fig 1. The moment over the middle-third of the span is equal to PL/6, and the vertical shear is zero. Fig 2 (A) illustrates the stress distribution in the elastic range on a plane across the middle of the specimen. It can be seen that the normal stress has a maximum value at the extreme surfaces on the tension and compression sides, and decreases proportionately to zero as it approaches the neutral plane. However, when the plastic range is reached, the stress distribution is no longer a straight line relation, but changes in a manner which can be best illustrated as shown in Fig 2(B). The following calculation and stress analysis are mainly in accordance with the works reported by Timoshenkol0 and Kochendörfer.9 From the simple beam formula, the maximum normal stress will occur at the surface of the specimen. For a round specimen with a radius r and for a rectangular specimen with a height 2h and width 2b, the maximum normal stress, Sp, will be given by the following formulas: For round specimen: 2PL Sp = 3pr3 [1] For rectangular specimen: Sn = 8bh2 [2] Since it is reasonable to consider that slip takes place under the same conditions as in uniaxial loading, the resolved shear stress S?, along the operative slip direction will be as follows: For round specimen: 2PL sin x cos ? In the past, the main emphasis in attacking the problem of the recovery of oil has been on the determination of fluid flow characteristics and residual oil saturation in the part of the reservoir which is contacted by a displacing phase. It is recognized that the determination of the fraction of the reservoir contacted in secondary recovery operations is also of great importance in predicting the ultimate recovery to be expected. A method is described in which radiographic techniques are used to determine these areal sweepout factors for any type of well spacing. Data showing the relationship of viscosity ratio and relative permeability to areal sweepout efficiency are presented for the five spot and the direct line drive well spacing patterns. Further applications of the method to studies of the displacement efficiency in the area contacted are mentioned. INTRODUCTION The problem of increasing oil recovery from typical reservoirs is generally attacked by trying to devise some means for reducing the residual oil in that part of the reservoir which is contacted. The fraction of the reservoir contacted in the displacement process. however, is also of major importance but has been given less consideration in the past. one reason for this neglect is the meager information available on the portion of the reservoir contacted and the magnitude of changes in this factor as operating conditions are varied. Until recently, the only means available for determining this quantity has involved the use of the electrolytic or poten-tiometric modelsl in which one is limited to working with a mobility ratio of unity. while means for calculating the volume of a reservoir contacted do exist. the calculations are very tedious for systems with mobility ratio different from unity. Recently several such determinations have been reported,213 and an experimental method involving a step-wise use of potentiometric models has been described.' A new method which has been developed for studying the areal distribution of phases in a porous medium is discussed below. This tool can be' used to determine the effect of operating variables such as viscosity, relative permeability, presence of gas, mobility ratio, rate and stratification on the fraction of the reservoir contacted by the displacing medium. This development based on the use of X-rays gives a pictorial representation of the location of the phases. Further, the amount of each phase at each point of interest can be determined quantitatively. X-RAY METHOD FOR AREAL STUDIES In this method the location of various phases distributed Over a test area are observed simultaneously by obtaining a photographic record of the transmission of X-rays through the test plate. This procedure is an adaptation of the radiographic techniques which have 10% been used in the medical and industrial fields. Just as the medical profession uses a chest plate to show spatial interrelationships, the location of an X-ray absorbing fluid and a nonabsorbing fluid in a porous medium can be determined by obtaining a photographic record of transmitted X-rays. Moreover, as changes occur in such a System, these changes can be observed by taking successive photographs. Previously, X-ray methods have been used in fluid flow studies to determine quantitatively the saturation at a given point in the system. The intensity of the transmitted X-rays was measured by an ionization chamber, so that a point by point survey of saturation could be made. The tremendous increase in the use of metals that have been prcpared by the various cold-working processes during recent years has greatly stimulated the investigation of problems concerned with the fundamental nature of these processes. It has been observed in practice that different methods of bringing about the same dimension changes in a sample result in a rather wide range of properties. Cold working reduces the ductility of a metal, or what is perhaps more nearly correct, its "working capacity," and naturally the manufacturer wishes to produce an article that has as large a working capacity as possible, and to produce it with the smallest number of operations. It has also been known for some time that cold deformation produces a parallel alignment of the crystal grains of a metal, and that the type of this preferred orientation depends to some extent at least upon particular processes employed in the deformation. The present investigation has for its purpose the study of the relations between the various factors of a cold-working process and the preferred orientation of the metjal crystals resulting from this deformation. The work is chiefly confined to a study of cold-drawn seamless tubing. Preparation of Samples The tubing samples used in this investigation were made of steel having a carbon content of 0.10 to 0.20 per cent, and were drawn on a standard type of draw bench. In order to obtain the large reductions, the annealed stock was coated with lead, for purposes of lubrication. The reductions of area stated refer to reduction from the annealed condition without intermediate heat treatment. The cold work was done as nearly as possible at room temperature. The samples of wire and strip used for purposes of comparison were of steel of approximately the same carbon content and were prepared in the manner indicated. Fox the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were-limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2 -4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.5 This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8Å2. or 16.2Å2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8Å2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2Å2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9Å2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study' gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27Å2. In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

RECENT interest has been shown in utilizing solid-state techniques for obtaining large oriented grains in the Alnico Alloys.1-4 Unfortunately, due to the inherent brittleness of these materials it is difficult to introduce sufficient imperfections by deformation to support the nucleation and growth of new, recrystallized grains. As a result, recrystal-lization methods for obtaining large grains, such as the strain-anneal technique, do not appear to be feasible. Steinort et a1.2 used a combination of a thermal gradient and internal strains to obtain large single crystals of Alnico 5 from a poly crystalline casting by annealing at temperatures above 1200°C. It was suggested that the strains were the result of the precipitation of the y phase which exists between -850° and 1200°C. At Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse limerock. While oversize material was crushed through Y4-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity.

If in a vertical, downward miscible displacement, the transition zone between the displacing and displaced fluids is neglected, a criterion for stable displacement can be obtained by considering a small hypothetical protrusion of one of the fluids into the other. This criterion leads to the definition of the well-known critical rate, uc = kg p/p. The consideration is further extended by taking into account the transition zone that develops as a result of diffusion and mixing. A generalization of the previous criterion leads to the definition of another characteristic rate, the stable rate, which in actual miscible drives will be less than the critical rate. In such drives, the entire transition zone is stable at rates less than the stable rate. At rates between the stable and critical rates, the displacement is only partly stable, i.e. part of the transition zone adjacent to the displaced fluid is in an unstable position. From that part of the transition zone viscous lingers will develop. At rates greater than the critical rate the entire displacement is unstable and viscous lingers will develop more strongly. Results of laboratory experiments are in agreement with the expected behavior based on the theoretically deduced stability of the displacement. INTRODUCTION The simplest form of miscible drive in an oil-bearing formation is the injection of a fluid that is completely miscible* with the oil under reservoir conditions. In general, such a fluid, a solvent for example, is less dense and less viscous than the oil present in the formation. If it is injected into a horizontal homogeneous layer, gravitational forces will lead to the formation of a gravity tongue of solvent in the upper part of the layer and the adverse solvent-oil viscosity ratio will cause viscous fingers to develop. If, however, the solvent is injected up-structure into ,a dipping layer, gravity has a favorable effect, because it tends to keep the less dense solvent up-structure. Tongue formation and viscous fingering are consequently reduced and it is even possible that they will be suppressed completely. Viscous fingering and gravity tonguing are the consequences of the instability of the displacement. A stable displacement cannot result in growing viscous fingers and/or growing gravity tongues. Since large amounts of oil can be bypassed if there is viscous fingering and/or gravity tonguing, the stability of a miscible drive is very important with respect to the recovery efficiency of the drive. The stability is of particular importance in miscible-slug drives, as it determines how quickly the miscible slug between the displaced and displacing fluids will be distorted and broken up, after which the drive is no longer completely miscible. Stability is thus a most important factor in determining the success of a miscible drive, and it is considered that the aspects of stability considered in this paper will make a useful contribution to existing theories. Consideration is given only to vertical downward displacements, in which no gravity tongues can develop and which are therefore simpler than downward displacements in sloping layers. THEORY CRITERION FOR STABLE DISPLACEMENT Let us consider a vertical column of a homogeneous permeable medium saturated with oil. A solvent less dense and less viscous than the oil is injected at the top of the column at a constant rate; in the column the velocities of oil and solvent are assumed to be uniform. Diffusion and mixing of oil and solvent will at first be neglected, i.e. we assume that solvent and oil are divided by a sharp interface. An additional assumption is that the interface is horizontal. Continuity of pressures exists at the interface, because no capillary forces are present between the two miscible fluids. With stepped-up work in rock mechanics, more and more data on strength and elastic properties of rocks has become available. Results of measurements of tensile strength, in addition to determinations of compressive strength, allow us to deter- mine, even if only in an approximate way, the third property influencing failure of a brittle material: shear strength. It is fairly generally agreed upon in rock mechanics, in drilling and blasting research, that Mohr's theory provides an acceptable method for explaining the failure of a brittle material. Mohr states that a material may fail either 1) through plastic slip when shearing stress Y in the planes of slips has reached a limiting value (which in general depends on the normal stress, X, acting normal to the surface), or 2) when the largest normal tensile stress has reached a limiting value. The mode of failure depends upon which of the two stresses is the smaller.
