This paper reports on an innovative professional development program for school science teachers run collaboratively between the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing and Murdoch University. Ultimately the initiative aims at increasing the pool of school students with strong science and mathematics backgrounds while highlighting the challenging careers available in the mineral resource sector including the gold industry. The program is unique in that it seeks to develop a network of science teachers who may participate in a series of workshops, short courses and tours over several years. The objective is to raise secondary school studentsÆ awareness of potential careers within the minerals sector by exposing teachers to a real life, hands-on look into the mining and minerals resource industry. Though the program includes the breadth of the resource processing sector, the potential value to gold processing is in developing a greater pool of potential employees. The initiative allows teachers to develop a better insight into the practical applications of the theoretical sciences they are required to teach. The evolution of the program from the first trials with Western Australian teachers to the introduction of the initiative to Queensland teachers are reported on. Additionally, the results of a pilot study involving 40 participating teachers are described. This study used a questionnaire and follow-up interviews to gain quantitative and qualitative feedback from teachers. There is evidence that the professional development program has resulted in teachers acquiring a new found appreciation for the application of the fundamental chemistry and physics they teach within the school curriculum. Also reported are associations between teacher participation in this professional development program and changing attitudes towards the industry in a positive way. Finally, there is some indication that these positive teacher attitudes may result in their students developing a better understanding of the diversity and availability of career paths within this industry.

Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. The main problem with these models is the inability to solve real size mining problems. We present a mixed integer linear programming formulation for the open pit long-term production scheduling problem. To reduce the number of binary integer variables in the formulation, we aggregate blocks into larger units referred to as mining-cuts. We present a semi-supervised clustering algorithm which aggregates smaller blocks based on rock types and grade ranges into mining-cuts without introducing an error in the grade estimated values. The cluster-based aggregation algorithm is fully integrated into an MILP mine production scheduling prototype software. We have implemented, verified, and validated our models. The efficiency of the new platform is evaluated through iron ore mine case study.

In preparing a paper such as this it was thought that the Newstan Colliery Company Ltd., being comparatively new, would need some introduction to mining people in general.The Newstan Company was formed by the Joint Coal Board in December, 1948 during a period of acute coal shortages. The Company took over the holdings of what were known as the Olstan and Northumberland Collieries, situated at Fassifern, alongside Lake Macquarie and adjacent to the Great Northern Railway, within easy rail access of Sydney and Newcastle, as shown on the locality plan (Fig. 1).The Company was developed in order to produce steaming coal for the power house trade and has continued its activities in the steaming coal trade since its inception. The Olstan and Northumberland collieries were together producing some 300 tons per day when the Company was formed, and it was from this foundation that the colliery was built. The planned development of the Company has been along the lines of producing coal by modern, highly mechanised methods, together with the preparation of theproduct for the consumer, to the highest degree possible consistent with up to date methods.In the comparatively short time of 5t years the mine has developed from a small hand-won coal unit to a high capacity modern mine, one of Australia's largest producers, with an output capacity as high as 3,000 tons per shift.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasised the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the context of styles of mineralisation.

Seam correlation in the central Rapahoe Sector (Greymouth Coalfield) can be enhanced by detailed lithostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy. Rewanui Coal Measures are overlain comformably by lacustrine, deltaic and fluvial strata, and this upper contact can be located using lithological and geophysical log character. The Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary (KTB) occurs near the top of Rewanui Coal Measures and has been identified palynologically in 16 drillholes. The Rapahoe Sector can be subdivided into two palynostratigraphic domains which adjoin along a basement normal fault which was downthrown to the north during coal measure deposition. The KTB provides an isochronous surface which is independent of the lithostratigraphic datum. Using the KTB as a datum, the æUpperÆ, æMainÆ and æSubmainÆ seams can be reliably correlated throughout the southern and central Rapahoe Sector. Similarly, the æSubmainÆ seam can be correlated with æcÆ seam of the Strongman Mine area, though other Strongman seams are absent from the central and southern Rapahoe Sector.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. Longwall mining originated in the early 18th century in the county of Shropshire in England, where it was known as the longway method. Its name implies the extraction of the seam over a long continuous length or wall of exposed coal. Until the late 19608 and early 1970s the use of the longwall system with a few exceptions was confined to the United Kingdom and Europe. It was not until the early 19708 that the highly productive longwall faces we now know, were developed and the application of the longwall system extended to Australia, South Africa, United states of America and other parts of the world. The modern longwall face has three major components, namely: +         the machine to break and load the coal +         the face conveyor; +         and a system of roof support.   This paper reviews the development of longwall mining technology. The parameters directly influencing the production 'of a modern longwall face are considered, as are the possible constraints to the further development of the longwall system.

Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

Solid EnergyÆs Wangaloa open cast coal mine was operated between 1945 - 1989, and remained closed and disused until 2001 when SENZ initiated a mine rehabilitation programme. It is nearing the final stages of physical and environmental rehabilitation, aimed at creating an aesthetically pleasing and useful landscape. The final goals of these efforts are to produce an area, which has recreational and educational value. SENZÆs holistic approach to rehabilitation has been undertaken, treating the entire historical mine footprint instead of focusing only on those disturbed areas and the minimum range of issues just to meet with legal compliance. Rehabilitation at the site has included overburden modification with an emphasis on stability, removal and replacement of unhealthy and invasive plant species, and an AgLime amendment to alter soil pH conditions, which would support native plant species. To date, most ongoing activities relate to final planting and plant upkeep, and maintenance of the landform including ongoing erosion control, pest control, environmental monitoring, and research. Environmental quality concerns at the site may be treated by using a combination of methods, including regrading and capping of acid-generating pyrites, soil treatment with AgLime, and passive wetland treatment within existing water courses. Following major works, the mine site area may be opened to the public for recreational activities, interpretive displays on historical mining activities, and observation and appreciation for otherwise unseen geological features. SENZÆs holistic approach to reclamation, rather than treating minor issues, will result in the former mine site being transformed into an asset and the environmental and financial liability associated with the closed mine being discharged. Former mine sites can be turned from environmental liabilities with no recreational or public value (and potentially dangerous to life) into sites that can be safely used by the public for recreational and educational purposes.

Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. Geotechnical conditions in the Lochiel Deposit are somewhat unusual, and thus geotechnical and hydrological investigations have assumed a high priority. The cost of mining the deposit has been shown to be very sensitive to geotechnical design parameters, and it is now seen to be of paramount importance to establish a high level of confidence in the design parameters used for mining cost estimation. Geotechnical investigations in the Lochiel Deposit reached a crossroads in 1985, when there appeared to be several quite different and equally attractive routes to follow to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in geotechnical mine design parameters. Three main options were identified, referred to as the No Further Work Route, the Drill and Trench Route, and the Trial Pit Route. The No Further Work Route was ruled out as being technically unsound and as satisfying none of the Electricity Trust of South Australia's (ETSA's) or the State Government's requirements. A variety of cement raw materials occur within the Cenozoic sequence in Northland. These form the basis of Golden Bay Cement's cement manufacturing operation at Portland, Whangarei. High grade limestone is taken from the Whangarei Limestone formation, which has been shown to have been sub-aerially weathered and developed mature karst features prior to deposition of the overlying allochthon sediments. In this instance, remobilisation of allochthon sediments following uplift and erosion is inferred. At Portland Quarry, argillaceous limestone is extracted from deformed thrust sheets in the allochthon sequence. Quarry operations have been designed to handle the steep asymmetric folds, thrust faults and fracture zones that affect the resource.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.
