Three legacy coalbed methane production wells have been converted to injection wells for a one-year carbon dioxide (CO2) injection test to evaluate the potential for CO2 storage in the coal reservoir and the potential for enhanced gas production at offset wells. The injection reservoir is composed of 15–20 individual coal seams with an average thickness of 30 cm (1.0 ft), spanning a depth range of approximately 240 (800 ft) to 670 m (2200 ft).The monitoring program for this test includes gas and water sampling of the three injection wells, three dedicated monitoring wells and approximately 20 offset production wells. Key technologies used for monitoring the study area include time-lapse GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) acquisitions for surface deformation measurement, a 28-station buried passive microseismic monitoring array, real-time downhole pressure and temperature sensing and perfluorocarbon tracer fluids, which will be injected with the CO2 stream. The schedule for the monitoring program includes pre- (baseline), during- and post-injection data collection. This schedule will allow data to be analysed for time-lapse changes and trends, which are important for understanding the migration of gas and fluid phases in the reservoir – including CO2, methane, other hydrocarbons and water – and for observing the changing distributions of reservoir pressures and stresses.The results of the monitoring efforts for this study have implications for monitoring mining operations. The combined use of GPS and InSAR geospatial data to evaluate elevation changes across and beyond the study area may prove to be an accurate option for measuring surface deformation, including mining-induced subsidence, in unstable terrain. Long-term microseismic monitoring using high-sensitivity instruments has several applications in mining operations, including rock stability monitoring, production monitoring and miner location detection during emergencies. Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are typically composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of sterile resources in particular BIF material which makes up greater than 65 per cent of current reserves. BIF, like most resources, is non-renewable and the deposition of BIF is thought to have come about by the reaction of Fe2+ ions in the ocean water with dissolved oxygen billions of years ago. BIF ore derived from the Limpopo region in South Africa (SA) located in the Penge Iron Formation is according to Cairncross, Kramers and Villa (2018) equivalent to that contained within the Asbestos Hills Iron Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape, SA. Considering that these are one of the largest iron ore deposits in SA, the case study involved mineralogical characterisation followed by beneficiation of BIF from these two regions to ascertain the comparability. Coarse and fines gravity separation comprising of Heavy Liquid Separation/Dense Media Separation on the +1.18 mm size fraction and shaking table on the -1.18 mm size fraction was conducted to ascertain whether an on-grade product or blended feedstock could be produced. The Limpopo mixed and Northern Cape conglomerate BIF samples achieved similar overall responses due to the conglomerate sample containing 15.3 per cent additional -1.18 mm fines. A combined coarse and fines product grading at 60 per cent Fe could be achieved at a yield and recovery of 43.9– 53.0 per cent and 62.2–63.8 per cent respectively. Increasing the grade to 63 per cent Fe reduces the overall recovery by 13.3 per cent. At the higher target grade, the contaminant specifications could be achieved for both samples. The Northern Cape laminated BIF sample is the most promising of the three samples studied. At the two iron target grades overall yields and iron recoveries of 72.9–65.4 per cent and 85.2– 80.2 per cent was achieved. In both instances the silica grade exceeded the product specification, however if the silica content is the driver the target iron grade should increase to 63.32 per cent. This will result in a minimal decrease in recovery of 0.4 per cent. The promising results of this study indicate that coarse beneficiation of BIF material is possible. These ore types could be blended with superior grade products to improve overall yields and recoveries or sold directly at a 63 per cent Fe product grade whilst sacrificing 0.4–13.3 per cent recovery.

The evaluation of mining projects requires a methodology that will give flexibility and manage the existing uncertainty within the projects. The discount cash flow (DCF) and other traditional evaluation approaches, which are widely used in evaluating a significant number of mining projects, have simply assumed that the main variables remain constant in their evaluation; elements such as discounted rate, mine life, operating cost and production rate. The DCF ignores managementÆs flexibility to adapt and reforecast and revise decisions. Real options valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methodologies that provide a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variables movements. ROV brings more variables into the evaluation model compared to DCF and assumes them as uncertain and dependent. Finally, ROV provides a range of solutions that can assist in managing this flexibility.This paper endeavours to compare ROV and DCF for mining projects comprehensively and applies these two techniques in the model. The paper shows that ROV will be inclusive of extra value in mining projects due to variables not allowed for, or even ignored, when the DCF model alone is used. One of the significant advantages of the ROV method is being able to evaluate mining projects under different scenarios from the inception of the projects. Furthermore, ROV gives the ability to evaluate the mining project while allowing for abandonment, temporary suspension, or expanding the mining project. In other words, the ROV evaluation process creates an analytical environment, which allows for optimisation of the mining plan within the mining project, as well as the ability to change the capital structure dependant on existing circumstances over the life of the project. The ROV is a new evaluation method that can add value in mining project analysis and offers opportunities to amplify gains, or to mitigate losses. Since iron oxide and silicon oxide are major gangue components in various types of ore, FeO-SiO2 base slag, ie fayalite slag, has been often encountered in pyrometallurgical processes of non-ferrous metals. During most matte production processes such as the smelting of Cu, Pb, and Ni, the FeOSiO2 based slag is inevitably formed and plays an important role in refining crude metal as well as engineering aspects. Recently, similar pyrometallurgical approaches have been attempted in the recovery of valuable metals (Ni, Co, Cr) from wasted secondary batteries. Thus, the viscosity of the FeO-SiO2 based slag has great significance in properly controlling smelting processes. However, when molten metal or matte does not coexist with the slag during the measurement, there has been a serious difficulty in maintaining Fe valance and consequently, the slag composition. In the present research, the viscosity of molten FeO-SiO2 slag was measured in 1573~1673 K using a rotational viscometer. In order to keep the state of iron oxides, the oxygen partial pressure was controlled using CO/CO2 gas mixture. The optimised ratio of CO/CO2 could be calculated using Fe/Fe2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ equilibria at each temperature. The composition of the slag, particularly Fe valance, after the measurement was analysed with the aid of an inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and an automatic potentiometric titrator. The measurement showed that the FeO-SiO2 slag has considerably low viscosity values in the molten state, and it sharply increases as the temperature decreases. In spite of the careful oxygen partial pressure control, a part of Fe2+ was found to be oxidised to Fe3+, with a maximal case reaching about 20 per cent. The increase in viscosity of FeO-SiO2 at low temperatures can be attributed to the composition change due to an unavoidable Fe2+ oxidation. In addition, the relationship between the change in the viscosity and the liquidus temperature of FeO-SiO2 based slag was discussed to understand the composition dependence of viscosity.

Pyro-metallurgy is still the main process for lead production and a lot of lead direct smelting processes have been developed in recent years. All the processes will experience two steps in common. The first is the oxidisation of PbS to PbO and then reduction from PbO to Pb, furthermore, from ZnO to Zn. So, the composition of melts, especially the slag composition at reduction step change continuously. Up to now, there are few systematic results on the slag physical-chemical properties with its composition change. In this work, the typical lead direct smelting processes were analysed from theoretical and practical standpoints. The full-period slag composition and slag melting point change were compared. Especially, to the PbO and ZnO reduction steps, based on the full-period slag composition change, the slag properties were predicted. Based on dust composition and test results, the mechanism of Pb compound evaporation and its effect on practice and measurement of high PbO bearing slag physical-chemical property is discussed. It is suggested that to restrain the evaporation in practice and to obtain more accurate measurement results of physicochemical properties of smelting slag are the key problem not only to set high efficiency, energy saving process, but also to environmental pollution control.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. Constructed stream diversions are a common element of mine sites across Australia. A review of constructed stream diversion performance in the Bowen Basin funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) in 1999 found over 80 per cent of constructed stream diversions failed to meet regulator and operator expectations. Since that time, improvements have been made in the assessment, design, monitoring and management of constructed stream diversions. Fundamental to these improvements has been the development of a better understanding of the regional stream systems and efforts to replicate the natural stream processes in the function and operation of constructed stream diversions.This paper discusses the history of constructed stream diversions through the Bowen Basin in central Queensland recorded in the outcomes of a series of ACARP funded research projects. Further, the paper reports on the outcomes of a current ACARP funded project that has reviewed the success or otherwise of constructed stream diversions in the region. The assessment has compared the performance of diversions that have been designed to replicate and provide for ongoing stream geomorphic processes with those diversions that were designed and built prior to the development of these design improvements. The Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline form a chrono- stratigraphic sequence of mainly greenschist- and amphibolite-grade shallow-marine to supratidal pelites, psammites, carbonate rocks, and volcaniclastics which in places rests unconformably on Archaean basement. Granite and later dolerite intrude the sequence, and are associated with the major orogenic 1800-m.y. event which regionally metamorphosed the sediments. Most mineralisation is stratabound, and can be related at least partly to volcanic activity. Uranium mineralisation is mainly confined to particular carbonate-rich horizons near basement. Other metals are mainly in small hydrothermal deposits near intrusive granite. Specialist studies indicate that uranium was leached from its source rock, and probably carried as carbonate complexes in highly saline fluids at between 100 and 3500 C. Precipitation took place by redox reactions in breccia zones in carbonate rocks; these zones were formed by carbonate solution or diapiric movement of evaporites which preceded the carbonate. Extensive chloritisation in the ore zones suggests metasomatism by Fe- and Mg-rich fluids which may have evolved during dewatering of the evaporites. The object of this paper is to present a brief overview of applications of radioisotopes in mineral processing. The emphasis is towards on-line applications, and is to present the broad picture rather than become involved in the details of particular applications. For a more detailed and comprehensive coverage, the reader is referred to the International Atomic Energy Agency International Symposium on Nuclear Techniques in Exploration, Extraction and Pro- cessing of Mineral Resources, held in Vienna 7-11 March, 1977. Because of space limitations here, we have inmost cases restricted coverage to those applications of radioisotopes within the direct experience of Amdel and Australian research bodies. Radioisotopes spontaneously emit energy in tiie Form of a and S particles, and electromag- netic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation is generally referred to as y-radiation when it originates from the nucleus, and X-radiation when originating from the electrons orbiting the nucleus. X-ray and y-ray energies overlap, with X-rays extending from a few electron volts (%') up to about 100 keV. Gamma rays in the useful energy range extend from a few keV up to .feV.

Bendigo Mining operates a 600 000 t/a comminution, gravity, flotation and leaching processing plant for the recovery of gold from their Kangaroo Flat Operation, in the Bendigo goldfields. The free gold and gold bearing sulfi des present are typically coarse grained and hence are highly amenable to gravity recovery. Plant operating data is consistently showing that over 78 per cent of the feed gold is recovered in a circuit, consisting of inline pressure jigs, inline spinners followed by free gold tabling and intensive leaching of tabling tails. The circuit receives coarse crushed product from high pressure grinding rolls and the grinding mill discharge, which allows material to be re-circulated through the gravity process until the particles are small enough to enter the flotation circuit. A plant audit was completed on 26 November 2009 designed to give an indication of the overall operational characteristics of the gravity circuit including single pass efficiencies of associated equipment. The techniques, results and challenges of such a survey are discussed.

This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

The level of salinity that various aquatic organisms can tolerate without incurring any adverse effects is dependent on several environmental and evolutionary factors. These factors include the relative concentrations of different types of dissolved salts in the water that makes up their habitat, the regimes to which organisms are exposed to waters of differing salinity levels (including naturally derived variations), the degree to which an organismÆs life history stages have adapted to salinity, an organismÆs ability or behaviour to avoid adverse levels of salinity and an organismÆs capacity for osmoregulation.Release of saline water into rivers of the Fitzroy catchment has created concern about the impact on aquatic organisms. Not only is salinity itself a stressor on organisms but different ionic compositions will moderate the effects. Ecotoxicology experiments were conducted using artificial saline water based on mine water chemistry using sensitive macroinvertebrates collected from the catchment, as well as a range of laboratory organisms in accordance with the ANZECC and ARMCANZ (2000) guidelines. The 95 per cent ecosystem protection value calculated from species sensitivity distribution derived from the commercial tests was estimated to be ~2.0 mS/cm. For the protection of 99 per cent of the species the salinity has to be reduced by more than 50 per cent to 0.91 mS/cm. The electrical conductivity (EC) values, derived by commercial testing and species sensitivity distribution in this study suggests that salinity contaminant trigger values previously developed using a referential approach for protection of aquatic ecosystems from saline mine water releases in the Fitzroy may be conservative.CITATION:Vink, S, Mann, R, Nanjappa, V and Prasad, R, 2013. A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. "Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. Unplanned dilution directly adds cost to production from mining, milling, tailings disposal and administration. Additionally, unplanned dilution decreases the productivity, profitability and may affect the planned life of mine. Identifying and quantifying the potential for unplanned dilution allows optimisation of the mining plan and mining practices to minimise the adverse impact on productivity and the cost of production. The Dilution Rating System (DRS) has been developed to more accurately predict dilution thickness and the variable potential for dilution, from individual stopes to life of mine planning. The DRS utilises the methodology developed for the Mining Rock Mass Model (Seymour et al 2007, Jenkins et al 2009) to generate a three-dimensional dilution rating model, which is then calibrated against stoping performance. Dilution can be predicted more accurately and the parameters affecting dilution can be determined and minimised through improved mining techniques, for example blasting and ground support design. Potential high dilution areas can be identified in the planning stages of the mine and systems put in place to mitigate the risk of excessive dilution. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the DRS and then successfully predict dilution for both the hangingwall and footwall of stopes at the Gara Gold Mine. This has enabled the expected dilution to be more accurately predicted and mitigated where possible thus reducing unplanned dilution.

When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

"Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

Surface and near surface particulate gold occurs sporadically over an area of some60 km2 between Vunda and Navilawa on the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji.Background grades of 0.01 ppm can be found in the zone of weathering from 3 to ZQm but, at Vunda, attain significance within certain "localities" ranging from 1000 m2 to 35000 m2 in area. Intense and deep weathering renders geological interpretation difficult but the higher grades seem to relate to equally weathered dykes and apophyses which intrude the tuffaceous country rock.Both country rock (5.4 m.y.) and intru-sives (4.8 m.y.) are of shoshonitic composi-tion and all rocks are consanguineous. At Navilawa, on the eastern end of the zone, basic monzonite crops out as a sizeable stock carrying low grade porphyry-type copper and gold. Between Navilawa and Vunda intrusives are as large apophyses and dyke swarms, and at Vunda, on the western end, only the upper ends of dykes and small apophyses are exposed carry-ing various sulphides, magnetite and rutilein hair line fractures.
