The Coeur dÆAlene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. The Proterozoic Revett Formation hosts most of the mesothermal Ag-Pb-Zn vein ore in the district; it consists of informally designated lower, middle, and upper members. All three members show up to an order of magnitude of southward thickening across the regionally significant Osburn fault. Changes in thickness of the Revett Formation across the Osburn fault reflect a major, down-to-the-south, crustal-scale fault that:was active during sedimentation, was periodically reactivated during the structural and metallogenic history of the district, and likely provided first-order control over regional fluid flow during mineralization events. Where vein structures intersect favourable strata, they produce rich ore; where vein structures cross unfavourable strata, they are poorly mineralised or barren. The most favourable host rock in the district is quartzite, which accounts for the large production from the quartzite-rich Revett Formation.The district has five main types of hydrothermal alteration:feldspar destruction, hydrothermal bleaching, carbonatisation, sulfidation, and silicification. Feldspar destruction is the most extensive and pervasive type of alteration, involving the district-wide absence of feldspar from Belt Supergroup rocks. Hydrothermal bleaching results from the destruction of hematite; it forms alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around many of the mineralised veins. Siderite alteration is most diagnostic of mineralisation, forming alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around all mineralised veins. Fine-grained arsenopyrite and/or fine-grained pyrite commonly form alteration zones adjacent to high-grade ore shoots that extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Widespread silicification is most easily recognised by the presence of numerous quartz veins.

"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. This paper describes laboratory and in situ tests and determines a set of parameters for stiffness and strength properties for a weak sedimentary rock mass, the East Coast Bays Formation of Auckland. The parameters derived are discussed in relation to peak strength and in respect of deformation limits associated with sequential excavate and support (SEM) or conventional tunnelling.

In 2005, Dyno Nobel Canada Inc, DynoConsult and CANMET-MMSL used their pool of expertise in blasting, ground control, open pit and underground mining, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a research project aimed at evaluating the role of electronic detonators in the development of a sustainable energy-efficient rock reduction process. The overall objectives were to improve health and safety in a mining environment and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The study was conducted in a quarry located in Nova Scotia, Canada, with the objective of taking advantage of the higher accuracy and flexibility of electronic detonators towards improving blast efficiency and measuring its impact on productivity in a quarry environment and energy savings. Optimising the blast sequence was the first aspect to be considered before starting to look at designing bigger blasts and achieving productivity improvements, without creating additional environmental concerns, as the quarryÆs location was representing a challenge in itself in the surrounding community. The use of high-speed cameras (500 fps) was an improved means of analysing blast dynamics during the firing sequence. Seismic monitoring and linear superposition techniques were also applied to validate the sequences to be tested in all three specific geological areas. The combination of field measurements allowed to identify the optimal blasting sequences that would then be delivered accurately with the electronic initiation systems. The data from 12 blasts (six with electronic detonators and six with pyrotechnic detonators) carried out in three different geological formations (soft, medium and hard rock) showed that the electronic blasting technology could increase rock fragmentation by 15 to 20 per cent. A more uniform distribution of rock fragment size was also obtained. Blast improvements on downstream processes resulted in a five per cent productivity increase in rock excavation and transportation, a ten per cent energy reduction in primary crushing and a 15 per cent increase in the primary crusher throughput. A prototype soft-sensor based on primary crusher data (eg energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computer process model were developed for online measurement of a rock operating work index. Furthermore, rock samples were collected and specimens were prepared in order to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock materials, evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and examine the development of micro and macro-fractures under binocular and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. A reduction in rock hardness by about 30 per cent was observed after blasting. However, the impact of the blasting method (eg using electronic versus pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage was either absent or not perceptible within the measurement technique accuracy and the number of samples analysed.

Reprocessing Queensland’s historical copper tailings for critical minerals is an opportunity to circularise the state’s mining industry by converting waste liabilities into assets. Mine waste valorisation enables economic rehabilitation of legacy mining sites, improves environmental outcomes, and can establish a secondary resources sector that produces a sustainable supply of critical minerals to supplement growing global demands (Australian Government, 2023). The North-West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) hosts numerous copper mines with known cobalt mineralisation (Degeling, 2020). Cobalt is a critical metal essential for green energy and battery technologies, however its global supply is at risk due to geopolitical and ethical concerns (Rachidi et al, 2021). Historically mining in the NWQMP has focused on copper, leaving cobalt to theoretically accumulate in the mine waste. First-pass geometallurgical characterisation of waste repositories by the Sustainable Minerals Institute identified Capricorn Copper as a key site for further investigation into cobalt deportment and recovery potential.

This is the first of two papers concerned with rock stress inputs to various mine design issues at the large Ok Tedi open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. The companion paper (also published at this conference) is ‘The Application of Rock Stress Inputs to Stability Assessments at Ok Tedi Mine, Papua New Guinea’ (de Bruyn et al, 2014).Stresses are a required input for numerical modelling of mine design issues. However, for some operations, like the very large Ok Tedi open pit mine in remote rugged mountainous terrain, direct and representative measurement of rock stresses can be technically difficult and expensive. In such situations, development of an appropriate and sufficient understanding of rock stresses can be challenging.This was addressed for Ok Tedi by considering the following:The tectonic and regional geologic setting of the mine.Results from three different programs of rock stress measurement over 19 years, including hydraulic fracturing (1991), acoustic emission (2007) and overcoring (2010). Some interesting results of the overcoring work are discussed. The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

In the chloride process to manufacture TiO2 pigment, feedstocks containing higher TiO2 contents (high-grade ores or HGOs) are favoured in order to minimise production of undesirable by-products. Most of today’s HGOs are produced through the smelting or reduction and leaching of ilmenite, processes which consume significant energy and/or produce large volumes of non-titanium materials that may have to be landfilled. In order to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of its TiO2 business, the DuPont Company, working with Kobe Steel Ltd, has developed an innovative process called TiRON for making HGO. Using a rotary hearth furnace, the process reduces ilmenite to a high TiO2 slag and metallic iron granules. The TiO2 slag is suitable for TiO2 pigment manufacture, and the iron is suitable for steel making. TiRON can process sand or rock ilmenite of varying compositions and particle sizes. Fossil fuel instead of electricity supplies the energy for the reduction. Dusts and off-spec materials are recycled. These process attributes, together with capital requirements estimated to be significantly lower, give TiRON substantial economic, environmental, and process flexibility advantages over conventional ilmenite upgrading processes. TiRON has been demonstrated at the semi-works scale, and preparations are being made to bring it to the pilot scale.

Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

Hatch forecasts that an increasing share of seaborne traded iron ore will be ultrafine, being either concentrate or pellet feed. This provides several challenges for the iron and steel industries, but the principal concern is: how much ultrafine iron ore can be consumed on sinter strands and with a minimal effect on productivity?This paper will identify new supply by project through 2020. Demand will be estimated for sinter production and practical steps will be identified to increase ultrafine consumption in sinter strands. The long-term iron ore price will be forecast to balance supply and demand. Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012. PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will provide high-speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major cities throughout Mainland, China. The HK$ 67 B (NZ$ 11.5 Billion) project is of great strategic importance for Hong Kong and is being implemented to a very tight schedule, from early 2010 with completion targeted for 2015.The works include a 15 platform terminus station in West Kowloon, 26 km of twin track tunnels from the terminus to the Hong Kong/Shenzhen boundary at Mai Po, tunnel vent shafts/adits/emergency rescue siding and a stabling siding facility. Trains on the Hong Kong section are intended to operate at speed up to 200 km per hour and up to 350 km per hour on the Mainland section.This presentation will provide an overview of the entire XRL project, with a focus on the challenging geotechnical and spatial constraints on the tunnel works. The global mining industry is perceived to be a world leader in sustainability reporting û with a 2008 Ernst & Young survey placing four mining companies in their top five performers in sustainability reporting in South Africa. There is certainly good evidence to support this finding, but there remain many ongoing issues with respect to sustainability reporting and some important areas for improvement by mining companies globally. This paper begins with a broad (but brief) review of sustainability and the technical basis for reporting against a wide range of typical indicators or measures on the environmental aspects of mining. The various protocols, frameworks or systems are then reviewed, with a particular focus on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and its associated mining sector supplement (including the evolution from environmental to sustainability reporting). A wide-ranging survey of reporting by mining companies is presented, including detailed analysis of 2007 and some commodity sectors over time. Examples of reported data are synthesised and analysed, focusing on their accuracy, consistency and utility for accurate assessment of the life cycle impacts for minerals and metals. A number of areas are identified for improved reporting by all mining companies, including water resources and consumption, energy consumption, process inputs (eg acids, solvents, etc), pollutant emissions, including greenhouse emissions, mine site data (not aggregate company totals) and finally rehabilitation and land status. Given the nature of mining, and considering parallels between æpeak oilÆ and the mining sector, it is critical that the state of sustainability reporting continue to evolve and improve û both in the number of companies using the GRI but also in the level and consistency of data being reported. Overall, the paper presents an important review of the present state of the art in sustainability reporting for mining, and provides a range of insights into ways to help improve reporting in the future for all mining companies.

High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events.
