The Kalgoorlie Tailings Retreatment Project (or "Kaltails") involves the reclamation and retreatment of approximately 50 million tonnes of gold tailing situated on the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Tailing is reclaimed and retreated at the rate of 42 million tonnes per annum. The project is a Joint Venture between Poseidon Limited and Gold Corporation, with Poseidon being the major participant (90%) and manager of the operation through its wholly owned subsidiary Kaltails Mining Services Pty Ltd. The marginal nature of the tailing retreatment project dictated that a detailed feasibility study be undertaken. Extensive sampling and metallurgical testing of the tailing permitted the development of an optimum economic processing route. A sensitivity analysis undertaken as part of the feasibility study indicated the project to be very sensitive to gold price and unit operating cost variations, and relatively insensitive to capital cost variations.

In a field test at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., a system developed by ICI Australia Ltd. for bulk loading "MOLANITE", an ammonium nitrate slurry blasting agent into ring drilled holes of wblcvel open stopes, was shown to be satisfactory. The fragmentation produced by the slurry was a significant improvement over ANFO and the stope production rate was increased by approximately 50%. Indications are that the charging rate and labour costs will not be greatly changed if a slurry system is used.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) Microindentation testing using the square–pyramid–shaped Vickers indenter is a well-established technique to determine the microhardness of minerals and materials. However there is a paucity of published microhardness data from Fe ore samples. It is acknowledged that an iron ore’s particle mineralogy and texture is critical to its processing properties, and it is therefore considered that the microhardness of different mineralogical/textural types may also relate to these properties. Mineral microhardness potentially provides inputs to the modelling of breakage characteristics during comminution, as well as the relationship between mineral chemistry and microhardness, and mineral microporosity and microhardness. Microhardness can be determined as single crystal microhardness, for more coarsely microcrystalline samples, or as ‘aggregate microhardness’ for cryptocrystalline or finely microcrystalline samples.Variations in the texture and mineral chemistry of common Fe ore minerals (eg martite and microplaty hematite, ochreous and vitreous goethite etc) are well established and this study provides microhardness data on different textural forms of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides from a variety of different Fe ore deposits. The data indicated that in general, the mineral grain size, microporosity and texture were the main influences on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide microhardness. There were no apparent systematic variations between microhardness and minor element mineral chemistry, with the possible exception of Al content in goethite (for goethites with Al content >0.5 wt per cent), and for goethite total element contents >90 wt per cent (determined by electron probe microanalysis, EPMA). Higher Al concentrations and lower total element concentrations in goethite EPMA analyses correlated with lower goethite microhardness. Microporosity and grain size were more important than texture to hematite microhardness. Different textural forms of dense hematite (eg martite, recrystallised interlocking hematite and specular hematite) with similar grain size exhibited comparable microhardness. Microhardness values for hematite and hydrohematite with little or no evident microporosity were also similar, whereas more porous forms of martite, microplaty hematite or hydrohematite exhibited lower microhardness.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Manuel, J R and Hapugoda, S, 2017. This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

The structural framework for the major gold deposits of the Reefton Goldfield was largely established in the 1930s after a detailed regional geological mapping programme. Recent new mapping has now substantially modified the structural framework of the Globe Hill - Devils Creek area and the Waiuta area. Using bedding-cleavage vergence as a method of establishing fold limb facing, many new fold structures have been identified, some of which conflict with long-established structures such as the Globe Hill and Waiuta anticlines. In addition, the mapping of areas of west- versus east-facing limbs constrains the position of many faults. The mineralised Globe-Progress Shear is one such fault which graphically demonstrates major structural discordance of the folds in the hangingwall compared to the footwall. Recognition of the folding is establishing the structural framework for understanding of the origin of these productive gold mining areas.

The classification performance of a Dutch State Mines (DSM) Rapped Sieve Bend has been investigated in a series of experiments. Coal slurries of a nominal 0.5 mm size were classified in the separation range of 0.10 to 0.14 mm at pulp densities from 6 to 21 per cent by mass of solids, and flow rates of 110 to 1375 litre min-1.The results obtained showed that the partition curve and water split io oversize was dependent on the solids flow rather than slurry flow rate or pulp density. For most of the operating conditions considered an accurate classification of the fine coal was obtained. The undersize efficiency was susceptible to solids flow rate, and was less than 70 per cent for solids flow rates greater than 16.7 tonne hour-1 metre-1 width of screen.

The production of sulphuric acid at Port Pirie by the contact process began in March 1924 with the commissioning of the Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s roasting and acid plant. This plant, operated by B.H.A.S. Pty. Ltd. on behalf of the E.Z. Co., continued to produce sulphuric acid from the gases evolved when roasting Broken Hill zinc concentrate in mechanically rabbled furnaces until September 1954, when the plant was closed down.In this peri9d of approximately 30 years some 600,000 mono tons of 98·5 per cent sulphuric acid was produced, most of which was used for fertilizer production at Wallaroo and Port Adelaide. During World War II 14,400 mono tons of the above was produced in the form of 20 per cent Oleum and railed to the Salisbury Munitions Factory for use in the production of nitro-glycerine, gun-cotton and T.N.T.In the early post-war period various ways of converting at least some of the sulphur in the gases' discharged to atmosphere from the lead sintering plant were considered until, in 1949, it was decided to erect a modern contact acid plant. Much work remained to be done on the roasting plant to produce a gas of suitable grade for the contact process and also on the design of a purification section suitable for the treatment of D.L. gases.The acid section itself, however, was largely of conventional design and it was therefore decided that this would be erected first. To it was then attached a sulphur-burning section to allow it to operate as a "hot gas" brimstone acid plant until the roasting and gas purification plants had been designed and erected. In this way the urgent need for sulphuric acid in the fertilizer industry would be relieved, to some extent at least, as soon as, possible.

Previously published stream quality data and AMD (acid mine drainage) analyses have been collated into a database (DAME û Database for Assessment of Mine Environments) and additional samples including NMD (neutral mine drainage) have been collected from coal mine drainages on the West Coast. Variations in the chemistry of mine drainage samples can be related to four factors: 1.       regional geology (Brunner Coal Measures or Paparoa Coal Measures) 2.       mine type (open cast or underground) 3.       hydrogeology 4.       local geology   In general mines hosted in Paparoa Coal Measures produce NMD whereas mines hosted in Brunner Coal Measures produce AMD with highly variable chemistry. Differences in coal mine drainage chemistry between mines hosted in Brunner and Paparoa Coal Measure sequences can be measured with acid-base accounting geochemistry. Correlation of ANC (acid neutralising capacity) and MPA (maximum potential acidity) analysis of rocks with mine drainage samples is substantially better than correlation of NAG (net acid generation) analysis with mine drainage chemistry.   It is likely that NAG analysis over estimates acid generation potential of some samples due to release of organic acids that are not released under environmental conditions. In general, differences in mine drainage chemistry between Brunner and Paparoa hosted mines are attributed to the effect depositional environment and diagenesis on coal measure composition. Exceptions to generalisations relating mine drainage to Paparoa or Brunner host rocks are likely where local geological conditions cause increased deposition of pyrite in Paparoa rocks and additional analyses are required to confirm interpretations.   Based on the interpretation of these results a mine drainage chemistry hazard model has been constructed. The hazard model predicts likely variations in mine drainage chemistry based on the four factors listed above. The hazard model has implications for mine related water quality risks. For example, ecotoxicity, human health affects and selection of remediation techniques are all sensitive to mine drainage chemistry.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

The history of soft and hard rock underground mining is blemished with regional instabilities of mine workings. Whilst the potential consequences of regional instability events are recognised to be high, there is a false perception that the probability of them occurring is very low. In fact, Australia has averaged more than one event per year for the past 20 years. At least five fatalities and over $100 million of losses have been associated with the events. As such, they are a core risk to underground mining and have a significant effect on the quadruple bottom line of business û safety, environment, community acceptance and economics. This paper explores the important roles that risk management has in reducing the probability and consequences of regional instabilities. It concludes that education and continuing professional development are essential elements for effectively managing the risk.

From time to time efforts have been made to classify rocks according to their hardness, toughness and abrasiveness, and to use these classifications to provide an indication of the ease or difficulty with which they may be drilled. However, rocks classified as of similar type on this basis may vary considerably in their .resistance to the penetration of a rock drill bit due to differences in their physical state.For instance, fine grained rocks of granular texture are more difficult to drill than equivalent' rocks of coarser structure, altered rocks drill more readily than unaltered ones, and silicified rocks usually exceedingly hard and tough may be so shattered by movement as to be drilled at a rate comparable to quite soft rocks. The history of the industry which recovers rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral beach sand deposits of Eastern Australia began with the initial discovery of zircon in 1895. Whereas a large number of small companies operated during the rutile boom of 1955-57, the industry is now controlled by a few large groups.Mining is mainly by suction dredging. Metallurgical practice is a two-stage process in which a bulk concentrate of heavy minerals, recovered by gravity methods, is separated into its constituent minerals by processes based mainly on surface, electrical, and magnetic properties.Various separating devices using these principles have been developed in the industry and combined in various ways in the operating plants.There is scope for future metallurgical developments.INTRODUCTIONThe existence of deposits of heavy minerals ("black sands") on the northern coast of New South Wales has been known for at least 90 years. The earliest metallurgical operations aimed at the recovery of gold, platinum, tin and monazite. Mainly because of the low grade of these deposits with respect to these minerals, but also due to metallurgical difficulties, such operations were abandoned by about 1895 (Whitworth, 1959). The presence of zircon was recorded quite early (Carne, 1895) but Raggatt (1925) appears to have been the first to report the presence of rutile.The economic exploitation of the deposits was initiated in 1928 when D. H. Newland, State Geologist of New York, made an examination on behalf of The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Company of America. The following data are put together to assist those who are responsible for ordering stores for mines and works. When making out a list of mine stores for a new plant, one can hardly be expected to remember everything, still it is all the more important that articles should not be forgotten, should the mine be situated in an out of the way place, where the manager has to look several weeks ahead. A man who has been accustomed to buy stores on a small scale, from local merchants, where he could pick out personally what he wanted, may suddenly find himself in a place where he has to order wholesale quantities or make out store lists to send contractors for quotations. As it is of course cheaper to purchase stores by the hundredweight, coil, barrel, etc as the case may be, in which they are made up, than to break such a parcel, the way in which the materials are placed on the market is mentioned, so that those who don't know may take full advantage of wholesale terms. The most frequent sizes and brands employed in connection with Australian mining are also mentioned. It would be useless to enumerate all sizes made by the trade, as many would be of no value for our purpose; still I have put down what will serve as a reminder to the manager to mention what size he requires when giving an order, such as the diameter of dynamite cartridges a slight neglect of this sort has often caused serious delay. By mentioning certain brands I do not wish to recommend them in preference to others inadvertently omitted they are simply mentioned as some of those frequently met with.
