"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

"The main objective of this study is to introduce the new Sandvik’s production cost-model within Crushing & Screening (C&S) technology. So far, there have been different ways of determining different production costs in the industry, however, the previously published and presented methods have not been very efficient in calculating the costs per product and metric ton. Accordingly, the current study has been planned and started in collaboration with Lund University to provide an accurate and easy to implement cost estimation program to determine the costs for crushing and screening plants worldwide.The proposed model has been adapted to fit the C&S processes of different rocks/ores fractions. The result is presented as cost per ton of the end product(s).Within this paper the cost estimation results for 3 different crushing and screening plants are presented based on the information obtained from the following sources: a) documents at Sandvik SRP, b) Sandvik’s crushing & screening internal/external machines/plants data and information, c) literature studies, including the use of Sandvik’s internal/external simulation and software programs, d), visiting the crushing and screening plants ,e) interviews, information systems’ data, and, f) testing and observations by ourselves.In order to improve the level of accuracy and the validity of the attained results, simplistic Monte-Carlo simulations have been used, where needed. The achieved results, so far, have proven the reliability of the model. The calculated cost estimations have shown an accuracy over 80% when they compared with real cost data obtained from plant practices.The current cost calculation model, will offer the possibility of:•,Calculating the production costs in proposed and/or existing C&S plant.•,Making detailed cost analyses for the end product(s) in proposed and/or existing C&S plants.•,Determining the profitability of each finished product when it’s required.•,Cost optimization by potentially cutting the cost for part of C&S plant with an existing plant practice"

"Afton Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) operates an 8500-tpd open-pit copper-gold mine near Kamloops, R.C. The pit is currently 480 feet deep and will reach an ultimate depth of 800 feet. The east, south and west walls of the pit are composed of Triassic andesites (Nicola Volcanic Formation) and contemporaneous sub-volcanic intrusions of micro-syenite, microdiorite, diorite and picrite-basalt (Iron Mask Pluton). The north wall of the pit consists of Tertiary sandstones, shales and mudstones (Tranquille formation) and dacitic dykes, sills, flows and tuff s (Kamloops Volcanic Formation).The Afton copper-gold orebody (30 million tons of open-pit ore with a grade of 1.0 per cent copper, 0.016 oz/ton gold and 0.12 oz/ton silver) occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask Pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The Triassic-Tertiary contact is a complex fault system dipping 65 degrees southward and causing the Triassic rocks to overlie the Tertiary rocks. The detailed trace of this contact is very intricate due to the mutual interference of three principal fault systems.The dominant geological structures in both Triassic and Tertiary rocks are faults striking WNW and dipping 65 degrees southward, i.e. sub-parallel to the orebody (strike faults). Cross faults and oblique faults are abundant and highly significant in some sectors of the pit. The Tertiary sedimentary rocks show an early series of northwesterly plunging folds deformed by a later series of northeasterly striking folds. Major lithological and structural boundaries divide the pit into 8 structural domain s within which the pitwall slope stability is controlled by the local geological structures and lithology.Assay data from production blasthole samples and exploration diamond drillhole samples show a log-normal frequency distribution, with a fairly low relative variance. Variograms computed from production blasthole samples show good continuity with elliptical horizontal zones of influence which are truncated by the major faults that bound the ore zone."

"Human factors (HFs) play an important role in the mining and mineral industry, affecting operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Despite the introduction of new technologies and automation in this sector, it is well known that a significantly large proportion of total human errors occur during the operation and maintenance phase. A comprehensive literature review of HFs across several industries is provided. From this review, the impact of HFs on operation and maintenance is summarized, with a focus on what the mining industry is currently doing and what opportunities exist for additional improvements. Future research directions and themes are also identified.RÉSUMÉ Les facteurs humains (FH) jouent un rôle important dans l’industrie des mines et des minéraux, en ce qu’ils affectent l’efficacité et la sécurité de l’exploitation et de l’entretien. Malgré l’apparition de nouvelles technologies et de l’automatisation dans ce secteur, il est bien connu qu’une grande partie des erreurs humaines (EH) se produisent durant une phase d’exploitation et d’entretien. Cet article propose une analyse documentaire approfondie des FH dans plusieurs secteurs. L’impact des FH sur l’exploitation et l’entretien est résumé à partir de cette analyse, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’évolution de l’industrie minière et aux possibilités d’améliorer davantage ses activités. Sont également identifiés les futurs thèmes et voies de recherche.INTRODUCTIONDuring the past several decades, the mining industry has focused on improving equipment, machinery, and methods that have led to more advanced hardware and software, equipment with higher reliability and productivity, and other technological advancements. These actions have improved safety and productivity and have reduced casualties and maintenance workload. Although today’s mining equipment and machinery are technologically advanced and highly reliable, the risk of accidents is still relatively high and key performance indicators have not improved significantly compared to other industries (Sorensen, 2012). A prominent reason could be due to insignificant integration of human factors (HFs) as part of planning, operation, and maintenance activities. The current mining system is a people system, and inevitably HFs and human error (HE) figure prominently in all aspects of this industry. Even the most advanced technologies and innovations require operators and maintainers with significant knowledge and skill, which could increase the potential for HE."

The Falconbridge Matte Leach Process yields high-purity nickel chloride by selectively dissolving nickel from copper-nickel converter matte with hydrochloric acid , purifying the solution by solvent extraction and crystallizing NiCl2 4H2O by further acidifying the purified leach liquor. In the Kristiansand Matte Leach Plant, a granular oxide is produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of the nickel chloride for subsequent reduction to a high-purity granular metal product, designated NICKEL 98. This paper describes the investigation of on alternate route to processing nickel chloride in which high-quality cathode nickel is produced by electrowinning from all- chloride electrolyte. The investigation was made in a pilot circuit containing two production-size electrowinning tanks operated in conjunction with the commercial-scale leach plant.

Alberta is labouring, and has laboured, under serious difficulties in the marketing of ?her coals, due to a number of conditions which now obtain, but all of which appear capable of solution, and their elimination would insure a very largely increased market for the vast coal resources of that province. It is perhaps necessary to again mention the fact that 15 per cent of the world's coal resources are to be found in Alberta; 21 per cent of that of North America; 72 per cent of that of the British Empire, and 87 per cent of that of all Canada. While we talk largely of the great wealth of Canada, the immensity of her vast natural resources, it is axiomatic that the mere presence of any natural product in a country does not in itself constitute wealth for that country, unless these raw materials can find a market, either in their raw state, or by the process of manufacture. There are many factors, however, which enter into the marketing of any commodity. The chief of these, in my opinion, is price competition. High costs of production materially reduce the radius in which any product can be marketed, and this applies particularly to coal. Mining costs in the province of Alberta are necessarily high at the present time, due in a large measure to the ease with which the 'gopher hole' mine can be opened with small capital.

The Al-Zn-Mg alloys (e.g. 7004, 7020) are employed for land transport and architectural applications whereas the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (e.g. 7075, 7050) provide the high strength aircraft alloys. The Cu gives rise to suitably sized and distributed precipitation but causes high quench sensitivity. Their hot work processing also has marked differences; the Cu-free alloys have good extrudability whereas the Cu-bearing alloys have low extrudability and are difficult in rolling as well. The behaviors of the two classes are described in terms of flow stresses and ductility over 300 - 500°C, along with constitutive contrasts. The ductility of the alloys with Cu is much reduced above 400°C by precipitation of a phase at the grain boundaries that can be avoided by suitable heating schedules. The high strength alloys are subject to de-lamination corrosion of sheared edges due to severely pancaked grains; this can be alleviated by holding between passes, in mid-rolling schedule. In torsion tests at 10-1 to 10 s-1/ 250 - 500°C, the stresses (ductilities) at 300°C/ 1s-1 and activation energy Q for 7004 were 118 MPa (2) and 262 kJ/mol. The 7075 was tested after several pretreatments: completely over-aged (softened): 107 MPa (5), Q=150 kJ/mol; whereas, solution and quick cooling to testing caused extraordinarily high peaks related to dynamic precipitation resulting in 160 MPa (1.2), Q=300 kJ/mol.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). Canadian newspapers from coast to coast, have been, for months, denouncing those articles entitled, "The Whisper of Death," which have been appearing in the Montreal Star. I have not read these articles as the newspapers do not print them; they just denounce them or class them as jokes. Apparently they think that they are not suitable for the ordinary Canadian to read. It appears, however, that the Star has said that unless we balance our budget, and that soon, we shall be bankrupt. That seems to me like common sense, though the Victoria Times says editorially that the Star claims will "shortly find a place in the joke column". In this editorial the Times quotes with much enthusiasm from the Quebec Telegraph. "Canada," says the Telegraph, "is all right. Her natural resources are so vast that no one need worry. Her future possibilities are limitless; her assets beyond figures". Does it not seem like the limit of nonsense for a country that is not paying its running expenses to make such pretensions? After fifty-five years of Confederation and much talk of national status we are still sponging on the mother country for our external defense; we still allow the hard pressed tax-payer in the old land to shoulder the entire burden. We even now refuse to accept able-bodied working-men from that small and overcrowded country and yet blatently talk of limitless resources.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to present .a summary of the evidence given before the Petroleum and Natural Gas Conservation Board in support of applications to it for permits to export natural gas from Alberta.I will attempt to be objective in my statements, despite the fact that my main interest in the hearings before the Board was to advance the interests of my own clients, the Westcoast Transmission Company, Limited.The hearing of the export applications •commenced before the Board in January, 1950, with the .application of the Westcoast Transmission Company. Joint hearings were commenced in September, 1950, and completed on December 14th, 1951. The Board heard evidence in support of six applications for export, one application to build a gathering system in Alberta, and three interveners, the .latter being the City of Calgary, the local gas companies, .and the coal interests, including both operators of coal mines and the Unions.The evidence comprised better than 8,400 pages, over two million words, and occupied 92 days before the Board.The Interest in Natural GasThe natural gas industry is one of the newer industries. It is not yet twenty years •old. In the United States, the expansion •of pipeline facilities has been phenomenal in the last fifteen years, and particularly in the last three years, when a total of over two billion dollars was invested in pipeline facilities. There are approximately 250,000 miles of gas transmission pipelines in the United States at this time, with additional lines constantly being pressed."

Just as a mine has a lifecycle, employees working within the mining sector also make several transitions throughout their career, from initial recruitment to retirement from the industry. Throughout the employment lifecycle, employees bring skills and knowledge that significantly contribute to the global economy. These skills are developed through education, professional training, coaching and through hands-on experience. Despite the current economic conditions and the demand for minerals, the mining industry is facing a substantial skills shortage due to the disparity between the number of new workers entering the mining industry and a largely ?graying workforce?. Although educational programs continue to evolve to attract people with a wide range of skills, the diversity of jobs and the strains of working in remote mining operations continue to present challenges for recruitment and retention of employees. This gap also presents challenges around knowledge transfer at a corporate and mine-site level; employers will require cultural and techno-sociological approaches to ease through these transitions. At the same time, there has been an explosion of social media tools that facilitate information sharing, cross-organizational collaboration, distance learning and knowledge capture. These tools have become increasingly popular in the last few years and their applications vary widely. The mining sector has started to adopt these tools for a number of purposes, including opportunities to harness social media to enhance human resources interactions, outreach and oversight. This paper will outline several case studies that explore leading practices for how the application of new media can assist organizations and individuals as they progress through their careers. This paper will illustrate how new social media communication technologies can be used to increase employee engagement and build organizational capacity in the mining industry. The paper will also include strategies for how to implement social media to enhance human resources applications and will cover ideas for monitoring and evaluation.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. Initiated and financed by the Canadian Space Agency, Micro-Rover Platform with Tooling Arm (MRPTA) project has targeted the development of a robotic system with remote control and autonomous navigation capabilities for testing a large variety of analogous planetary missions. Although developed for planetary exploration, the navigation system is highly suitable to such areas of application as construction and in mining. Autonomous navigation system is capable of moving the platform to predefined position(s)/orientation(s) while continuously mapping the terrain, assessing its traversability and choosing most appropriate path to follow. Designed according to the JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) framework, the system consists of several interconnected components. Following components are of particular importance: Pose Estimator (PE), Terrain Evaluator (TE), Map Manager (MP), and Path Planner (PP). The PE uses a minimal sensor configuration consisting of an azimuth gyroscope, inclinometer and wheel odometry. The PE provides reliable pose estimates in spite of pronounced slippage by employing extensive use of fused data. The TE uses a nodding laser scanner which continuously sweeps the area in front of the platform and constructs a ?traversability grid? (TG) of the surrounding area. Multiple TGs are constantly constructed along the platform motion path are combined into a terrain map maintained by the MP. The PP uses this map to compute a motion path Obtained path is executed by the motion controller and remains current until it is contradicted by the most recent map ? at which point it is re-planned. This paper addresses integration issues, lessons learned and also outlines the possible applications for construction and mining.

"The methods generally applied to predict performance and financially evaluate beneficiation options are reviewed.Typical costs f or a western Canadian thermal coal operation are examined. Preparation-from truck dump to loadout-frequently amounts 10 over a quarter of total minesite costs. Failure to achieve projected yield-whether caused by mine or plant problems-s-substantially increases production costs because more coal has 10 he mined to meet a specific market demand. Problem identification by mass/ash balances is recommended.Thorough characterization of the coal and associated waste materials and more reliable prediction of beneficiation process performance are therefore essential to determine a project 's financial viability.IntroductionWestern Canadian coal prep a ration plant capacity is partway through a massive expansion program . In 198 1 potential product ion was 14 million tonnes, by 1985 it will be 26 million tonnes per year. Only two years ago the industry was concerned whether it could sustain this rate of growth to meet market demands : now with diminished market demand and lower coal prices being offered by our international competitors there are doubts whether t his potential will be fully employed , even by 1990.One direct consequence o f the occurrence of a variety of coals in a stunningly beautiful but complex geo logical setting such as the Rocky Mountains and their Foothills is that each project is unique. Coal is a low value per tonne product. To supply distant markets from geographically isolated deposit s necessitates expensive , dedicated , infrastructure . T o be profitable these operations must achieve eve ry advantage of the economy of scale.Each of the mi ne complexes commissioned in the 1970s experienced severe problems in the area o f co a l preparation . Most bought their way out , paying for major plant modifications by increasing the scale of their total operation . The current market recession may not allow new operations this route to profitability.The objective of this paper is to illustrate the economic impact of coal preparation problems on the profitability o f the total minesite operation and thus provide a sound basis for decision making process."

Geological examination of the underground workings of the Horne and Aldermac mines during the summer of 1927 has brought out the following facts: (1) That the ores tend to replace bodies of breccia or tuff rather than massive lava or dyke material; (2) That the faulting and folding at the Horne has had a pronounced effect in localizing the ore-bodies; (3) That there is a tendency in cert?-in cases for ore-bodies to be localized beneath gently dipping dykes, which acted as impervious roofs; (4) That there is a great difference in age between the chalcopyrite part of the ore-bodies and the pyrite-pyrrhotite portion. A statement of the development to date at the Aldermac mine is also included in the paper. ALDERMAC MINE The Aldermac property is made up of eight claims in the western half of Boischatel township, Quebec, including 747 acres in all. The mine itself is approximately three miles, 25 chains from the west boundary, and four miles, 55 chains from the north boundary, of the township.

Introduction Of all Canada's mineral resources, its coal deposits have probably received the most continued attention by the Geological Survey since its inception ninety years ago. A casual review of the many geological maps of coal areas by the Geological Survey will show how geological and topographical detail on the maps has gradually increased to meet the ever urgent demands of the mining industry. In the early stages of exploration, the mapping done, especially in the coalfields of the Rocky mountains, was largely of a reconnaissance nature. On these maps the topographical relief, where shown, is indicated by form lines or by hachures, the boundaries of the coal-bearing formations are only approximately defined, and the geological structure of the coal seams is illustrated by one or more generalized cross-sections. Once mining development on a coal area began, there arose a demand for more detailed maps. To meet this need, topographical and geological maps on a scale of one inch to a mile were made, in which the ?topographical relief is shown by contour lines having generally an interval of 100 or 200feet. On the geological maps, the boundaries of the formations are accurately delineated, and the geological structure of the area is illustrated by one or more structure sections drawn across the area, which show the position and attitude of fault lines, the crests and troughs of folds, and the attitude of the various formations (See maps of Costigan Coal Field, 1905, and Cascade Coal Basin, 1907, by D. B. Dowling).

"IntroductionTHE CANADIAN use of short-period delay-action detonators in coal shooting has been carried on for about two years, mostly in British Columbia, and this is a preliminary report on progress to date. Entire coal faces are being shot successfully with one application of electric current.The electric blasting cap came into use about the beginning of the century. The low-tension electric cap, the type most commonly used, consists essentially of a metal tube containing an initiating explosive. Two wires lead into the end of the cap and are connected inside the cap with a short 'bridge wire .of very high resistance. This •bridge wire is buried in a match-head of a readily ignitable powder composition. When current goes through the lead wires, the bridge wire becomes extremely hot and sets• off the match-head which, in turn, ignites the powder just below it in the tube. This explosion sets off the main charge of explosive. Thus, by connecting a group of caps to a source of electric .current, a number of charges could be exploded simultaneously. This immediately became of great value to mine and quarry operators. Explosives could now be used to break up large masses of material at one time, as against the older, slow method .of blasting small amounts with single charges.The next step was to develop a delay detonator which would allow charges of explosive to fire one after the other, one or two seconds apart. Such detonators allowed first blasts to relieve some rock burden before the next charge fired, giving the second charge an easier task in forcing out more rock, and so on for the rest of the series of charges."

"IntroductionMINING operators in common with other operators are confronted today with two serious problems, shortage of experienced workmen and rising costs. The following review of practices at the Sullivan mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, outlines certain measures that have been responsible, during recent years, for minimizing the effect of these two problems. The paper is divided into three main sections:( 1) Training programmes and job studies( 2) Improved mechanization and equipment( 3) Large-scale methods of operationTraining Programmes and Job StudiesJob TrainingJob training courses were introduced at Cominco immediately after the last war and proved to be a great benefit to the operations. There were three courses given, Job Instruction Training, Job Safety Training, and .Job Relations Training. These were spread over a period of two years and were taken by all operating supervisors and some key operators.The courses were introduced by a trained instructor from the British Columbia Department of Labour. This man trained twelve of our employees as instructors by giving them an intensive one-week course. Similarity between the three courses was such that the instructors trained in the first one were very readily trained for instruction in the two succeeding courses."
