The Tata Steel mill at Skinningrove in the North East of England produces top hat sections for mineshaft guides in sizes 102 and 150 mm. The top hat section is the technically preferred shaft guide choice for modern deep mine shafts. This paper explores the relative service performance of top hat and square hollow section guides in service. Comparative corrosion performance is reviewed and the paper describes work commissioned by Tata Steel (as Corus) undertaken by Aker Kvaerner Engineering to evaluate relative winding speeds, relative loads and fatigue life in service. The experience of supply to UK Potash mining is discussed and the future view of high capacity hoisting and larger section size market need and availability is assessed.

"The Kidd Creek copper smelter has been expanded from its original design of59000 tonnes of copper per year to over 120 000 tonnes per year. Modifications to the process gas handling system and acid plant have been made to accommodate this higher production rate and, generally, to optimize the operation.The gas handling system associated with the continuous smelting process is discussed in terms of boiler accretions and modifications to minimize their impact on operations; design changes to effect reductions in high pressure drop duct configurations; material changes to overcome corrosion and plant additions to improve gas cleaning capability. The acid plant is reviewed with references to changes made to accommodate the increased S02 gas strength resulting from the higher smelting rates. IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited is a base-metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonnes per day (t/d) concentrator corning on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonnes per year zinc plant was conunissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 t/d of ore. To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Commco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 136 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No. 3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery."

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.

THE conservation of strategic materials during war rime gives rise to many problems not commonly encountered in times of peace. During normal times, when world trade is unrestricted, we are apt to become lavish to a point of extravagance in our use of those materials which, during rime of war, become scarce owing to inadequate transportation and production facilities or because the enemy may be in position to control sources of supply. It becomes necessary, then, to enforce rationing of available sup-plies, and in some cases, where such supplies are wholly inadequate, we find we must resort to the use of substitute materials. We are now confronted with such a problem to an extent never before experienced, with the result that many of the commodities upon which our civilization depended are now either shut off completely or, because of the heavy demand occasioned by war production, are not available in sufficient quantities to meet requirements predicated on peace-time standards and manufacturing methods. It has become necessary, therefore, to make many changes, some of them very drastic indeed, to enable us to carry on our war effort effectively. This? discussion will deal briefly with one phase of this problem, namely, the conservation of alloys required in the making of steels necessary for war production. In line with a request from the War Production Board, the Technical Committee on Alloy Steels of the American Iron and Steel Institute made a study of experimental steels embodying the !east amount of alloying constituents, with the objective in mind of substituting these steels wherever possible for the standard alloy steels used heretofore. This study embraced the following phases: (1) The availability of silicon and manganese; (2) The average quantity of alloying elements recoverable from scrap; (3) The effect of increases in manganese and silicon contents on the general properties of steel; ( 4) The elements and ranges of elements which might be used to duplicate the hardenability of the steels now in use; (5) The effect of combining several elements in small quantities upon the properties of steel at various hardness and strength levels; (6) A determination as to whether or not the steels selected would suffice for general application. Working on this basis, the Committee arranged for the manufacture of several heats of steels containing various combinations of different amounts of such elements as silicon, manganese, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. The steels thus produced were compared by hardenability tests.

"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. Gold leaching from a commercial cyanide-amenable gold ore was studied at 25°C using sodium bisulfide-hydrogen sulfide solutions containing elemental sulfur. Gold extraction from the ore using 0.55 M NaSH, 4.1 atm (60 PSI) H2S, 1 g/L S8 and 26% solids by weight was about as good as the best extraction obtained by cyanidation. Maximum extraction was achieved in roughly 48 hours. Sulfur dissolves in the bisulfide solutions to form a mixture of polysulfides. Simple speciation calculations indicate that gold solubility as bisulfide complexes should be roughly ten times higher than in the absence of added zerovalent sulfur. The principal bisulfide complex is believed to be [Au(HS)2]-. Gold dissolution is favoured by increasing HS- concentration and by increasing H25 pressure. Polysulfide complexes of gold are also likely to be formed, and may contribute substantially to gold leaching. Two experiments using pure gold were also performed. Up to 100 mg/L gold was dissolved in 140 hours using 0.55 M NaSH, 1 g/L added elemental sulfur and 6.2 atm H2S.

Quantitatively analyzing deformation of a tunnel with lining anomalies for structural safety evaluation is essential for sustainable tunnel engineering. However, a complete theory and associated methodology accounted for displacement of a built tunnel is absent. This manuscript introduces a novel characteristic matrix method proposed by the authors which is an integrated procedure that analyzes displacement of rock tunnels in operation. First, establish a numerical model expressing a specific state of the tunnel in interest. Derive the characteristic displacement modes by a unit disturbances and check their independency. Once the characteristic displacement modes are proved to be orthogonal (independent), they are ready for use. Given a tunnel displacement, modal decomposition returns the magnitude of each characteristic displacement modes that together consist the given displacement. By realizing the definite value of horizontal and vertical translation, rotation, uniform compression/expansion, elliptic deformation, triangular deformation…etc. for a tunnel displacement, one can distinguish tunnel displacement and deformation types from their modal composition. A circular tunnel with elastic structure and surrounded by elastic rock mass is chosen to demonstrate the outcome of characteristic modes and how they work. The influences of tunnel shape, elastic modulus ratio between rock mass and tunnel structure, and numbers of monitoring points on a tunnel profile were also discussed. Identifying possible tunnel deformation causes is attainable if further connections between mode combination and force increments were built.

Abstract A simplified method of fatigue testing full-dimension, as-rolled, non-machined, mining drill rods is very desirable to the mining and steel industries in the classification of steels available on the market, through the evaluation of their fatigue limits and endurance strength. In this paper one such simplified method is presented and analysed. The preliminary results show many advantages of this method, such as simplicity and constancy of loading. The type of loading applied more or less simulates the working conditions of the outside fibres of the mining drill rods. Additional advantages of this method are the possibility of testing under dry and wet conditions, its quietness, and its ease of operation. Specially designed adaptors and specially applied techniques of fixing and preparation of samples make possible the breaking of a quarter-octagon hollow drill rod in a free length of uniform section in a rotating beam machine. At first glance this seems to be difficult to achieve. In the first preliminary test three different lots of steel were used. S-N curves under dry conditions were determined. These curves permit of the classification of the drill rods on the basis of the fatigue limit and endurance strength of the outside fibres of the metal, which is dependent to a greater or lesser extent on the effect of surface decarburization, surface imperfections, and special surface treatments. The average slope of the S.N curve in the damaging zone, and the fatigue limit in equal tension-compression rotating bending, were determined for SAE 1080, chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum mining drill rods. INTRODUCTION The fatigue limit and the endurance strength of mining drill rod steels are of interest to both the mining and the steel industries. These industries are greatly interested in lowering the cost of mining by reducing the consumption of these steels per ton of ore exploited.

"While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. "Fine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. In this study, a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator was established and developed based on the results of laboratory batch separation results. The fluidization behavior and the effects of several main parameters including superficial air velocity, vibrational parameters, bed height and separating time were systematically investigated. The results showed that the bed expansion increased linearly with the superficial air velocity and theoretically, higher bed expansion benefited the hindered settling process of fine coal particles. However, larger superficial air velocity would induce intense fluctuation in bed surface and a poor performance of density segregation. The conveying velocity of particles was mainly determined by the vibration angle and a predicted model was established by the nonlinear regression analysis. A theoretical model of bed height distribution was established and this model fitted the measured value well. The beneficiation performance of this separator was evaluated by separating -3+1 mm Wuhai fine coal. The results showed that the probable error, E, is 0.225, indicating a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator could achieve a satisfactory performance.INTRODUCTIONFine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. In recent years, the increasing academic interest in the field of fine coal dry beneficiation has been aroused in most of big coal countries. In summary, recent processes of fine coal dry beneficiation are, according to their processing principles, mainly classified into two categories: dense medium beneficiation (Dong et al., 2015; Fan, Chen, Zhao, & Luo, 2001; Luo et al., 2008; Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2011) and improved pneumatic beneficiation (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, & Chen, 2013; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, Duan, et al., 2013; Zhao, Zhao, Chen, & Luo, 2015). The former deploys artificial dense medium, such as magnetite powder and fine sand, to form a stable gas-solid suspension with certain density under the function of the upward fluidizing air flow and in some case, the external force field like vibration and magnetic field. Generally, it is believed that the process of air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) is suitable for separation of coarse coal (-50+6 mm) and can't obtain a satisfactory result for fine coal separation (Luo, Chen, & Zhao, 2002; Luo et al., 2008). However, some recent laboratory efforts (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Zhang et al., 2014) attempt to find an improved performance for fine coal beneficiation in ADMFB with some modifications. The point of these works is to use a comparatively shallow bed and finer magnetite powder with appropriate size distribution. It is known that fluidization of finer magnetite powder is prone to arouse adverse fluidization properties such as channeling and slugging. Thus, the external force is introduced to an ADMFB in order to improve the fluidization quality of a magnetite powder bed. Some recent literature on air dense medium magnetically stabilized fluidized beds (Fan et al., 2001; Luo, Zhao, Chen, Fan, & Tao, 2002; Song, Zhao, Luo, & Tang, 2012), air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (Luo et al., 2008) and Reflux Classifier (Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2010) reports that the separation efficiency, namely the probably error E value, of dense medium separation of fine coal ranges from 0.066 to 0.07, indicating a good separation performance. But, the main unresolved problems of dense medium beneficiation are located in the processes of product purification and medium recovery and are urgent to be solved befor"

"The effect of metal cations on the rutile flotation using styryl phosphoric acid (SPA) as the collector was investigated by micro-flotation test, bench scale flotation test, zeta-potential measurements and adsorption measurements. The micro-flotation results indicated that Fe (?) and Al (?) ions in low concentrations had obvious activation on the rutile flotation, and Pb (?) ions in low concentrations had smaller activation of rutile, but Fe (?), Al (?), Pb (?), Ca (?) and Mg (?) have strong inhibition of rutile flotation in high concentrations. The bench scale flotation results indicated ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), boracic acid, and sodium hexametaphospate can decrease the metal ions concentrations, and increase the recovery of rutile flotation. Adsorption measurements and zeta-potential measurements revealed that Fe (?), Al (?) and Pb (?) ions were adsorbed on the rutile surface, and had interaction with SPA. But when these ions concentration were over the largest adsorption capacity, residual metal ions could occur chemical reaction with SPA.INTRODUCTIONRutile is one of the favored minerals for production of titanium dioxide white pigment, primarily through the chloride manufacturing process (Stanaway 1994; Hou et al., 2013) However, the majority of rutile ores belong to refractory ores, while flotation is one of the most efficient methods to separate fine rutile from gangue (Dolbear et al., 1937). With the flotation development, many effective collectors were successfully applied in the oxide ore. Many reviews have indicated that organic phosphonic acid collectors showed good selectivity on oxide ores such as ilmenite and rutile (Bulatovic & Wyslouzil 1999; Liu & Peng 1999).It is inevitable that many types of metal cations are present in ore pulp. These metal cations significantly influence the flotation of minerals. Liu et al. (2015) showed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ could improve the floatability of spodumene at pH 12.5 and 10.0, respectively. The authors proposed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions readily form hydroxy complexes (CaOH(l) and MgOH(l)) and precipitates as (Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2) in strongly alkaline solutions. Fan and Rowson (2000) investigated the effect of Pb(NO3)2 addition as an activator on ilmenite flotation and showed that it could improve ilmenite floatability. The addition of Pb(NO3)2 resulted in an increase of ilmenite zeta potential in both weakly alkaline and acidic aqueous solutions. Mehdilo, Irannajad, and Rezai (2015) studied three kinds of ilmenite of different origins and discovered that both Mg and V had a negative correlation with ilmenite flotation, while the Mn content seemed to correlate positively with flotation efficiency. A number of studies have also showed that Fe3+ can improve the floatability of ilmenite (Fan et al., 2009; Nuri, Mehdilo, & Irannajad, 2014)."

"Numerical simulations are widely adopted in the design of several types of rock structures, including tunnels, caverns, rock cuts, and open pit and underground mines. In recent years, analyses based on the hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) have been shown to provide a realistic representation of rock mass deformation and fracturing processes. To date, the FDEM approach has successfully yielded qualitative and quantitative results for several practical rock engineering applications, yet it has lacked the ability to consider the implementation of rock-reinforcement measures. Since rock reinforcement is often used in civil and mining applications to improve the strength and deformational behaviour of a rock mass, the ability to incorporate such features into FDEM analyses is essential to extend its applicability to a broader range of problems. The work presented in this paper represents an important first step towards developing a simulation tool that can be used for practical rock engineering applications, including the design of underground excavations and rock slopes.INTRODUCTIONRock support and reinforcement measures are often employed in civil and mining rock engineering projects in order to maintain or improve the strength and deformational behaviour of rock masses. The preferred type of reinforcement or support elements along with the preferred layout and timing of installation depend on the in-situ ground conditions, the nature of the rock mass and excavation method. Over the last two decades, numerical modelling has been increasingly used to design and attempt to optimize rock reinforcement and support systems. As such, most rock engineering-specific modelling software now offers various approaches for modelling different rock reinforcement and support elements."

"The Nickel/Cobalt operation in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta has successfully used an oxidative ammonia leach process to refine a variety of feeds into high quality nickel and cobalt products for over 60 years. Fundamental changes to the refining process were made when the major feed was converted from nickel concentrate to cobalt rich mixed sulphides in the early 1990s. Since the early 1990s, the production capacity of the refinery has expanded to match increases in both mixed sulphides and other feeds. In addition to increasing the production capacity of the refinery, other changes have been required in order to improve the operability and reliability of the refinery as well as to deal with increasingly stringent safety and environmental requirements. This paper describes recent changes at the refinery including changes to the flow sheet, improvements in unit operations, incorporation of new feeds, management of byproducts, and control of impurities.INTRODUCTION The Cobalt Refinery Company (Corefco) plant in Fort Saskatchewan processes nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide intermediate produced at the lateritic nickel mine and high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facility in Moa Bay, Cuba. Both operations are jointly owned and operated by Sherritt International and General Niquel of Cuba. The mixed sulphide, along with other feed materials, is processed at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery using a pressure ammonia leach-hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel and cobalt metal. This refinery was originally constructed in 1954 to treat nickel concentrate from Sherritt’s Lynn Lake mine in Manitoba. (Benson and Colvin, 1964; Boldt and Queneau, 1967; Forward, 1953; Forward and Mackiw, 1955; Kerfoot, 1989) From the mid-1970s until the early-1990s, the facility operated as an independent refinery, treating nickel-bearing feeds from around the world. The flowsheet was changed in 1992 to address the increased cobalt content of the feed. (Cordingley and Krentz, 2005; Kerfoot and Cordingley, 1997) The flowsheet was adapted further in 2009 to improve cobalt speciation in the leach process, which allows better cobalt-nickel separation. The 2009 iteration is shown in Figure 1. Three ammonia leach stages were used to ensure high recoveries of nickel and cobalt. Underflow solids from the final leach stage contained mainly iron oxides. One of the features of the leach process is the innovative recycling of ammonia. Ammonia vented from the leach process in tail gas and from atmospheric tanks is recovered and recycled into the refinery using water based scrubbers and a high pressure distillation process. Indeed, roughly 250 t NH3/d is recovered as distillate and recycled back into the process. Also, air enriched with ammonia which is vented from the later first stage autoclaves is recycled to the lead first stage autoclaves to maximize oxygen and ammonia utilization."

Potassium-argon age dating performed recently on intrusive rocks from Copper Mountain indicates that the satellite Smelter Lakes and Voigt stocks have radio-metric ages which are indistinguishable from that of the Copper Mountain stock, as determined by Sinclair and White (1967). The complex of intrusive rocks known as the Lost Horse Intrusions also yields essentially the same radiometric age, as do biotite-sulphide-pegmatite veins on Copper Mountain.

Under the auspices of the Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program, a geochemical orientation survey was undertaken in an area of uraniferous Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) rocks near Cape Dorset in southwest Baffin Island. The main objective of this study was to establish a methodology for a future reconnaissance geochemical program using lake samples over a 300-mile Lower Proterozoic rock belt that occurs along the southern coast of Baffin Island. Mineralogical and chemical studies of known radioactive occurrences, combined with detailed sampling of secondary environment media in the vicinity of the showings. indicate that uranium is the most significant pathfinder, despite considerable enrichment of other metals in the uraniferous rocks, Significant geochemical patterns produced by uranium in lake waters and uranium in lake sediments have been obtained, but their relative usefulness depends on the distribution of carbonate bedrock, which in turn affect the bicarbonate content of lake waters. In southern Baffin Island, because of erratic variation in lake-water alkalinity, it is recommended that both water s and sediments be sampled on a routine basis. The need for lake-water acidification to prevent depletion of soluble metal ions in samples resulting from adsorption on the walls of the containers and/or suspended solid matter is discussed briefly. The base metal potential of the area was examined in some detail and found to be significant, particularly for a Lower Proterozoic gossanous formation that occurs throughout southern Baffin Island.

In this work, the effects of CaO/SiO2 ratio and the FeSO4 and FeS2 contents on the stability of the mineralogical species in chromium-based slags were studied. The chemical stability was evaluated by leaching with an acid solution. The main Cr-compounds in slags with FeSO4 and CaO/SiO2=1 were FeCr2O4 and Ca3Cr2Si3O12, while Cr3S4 predominated in slags with FeS2. The slags with CaO/SiO2=2 mainly contained CaCr2O4. The highest Cr concentration levels in the leaching liquors corresponded to slags with CaO/SiO2= 2, and the lowest Cr concentration corresponded to slags with high FeSO4 or FeS2, owing to the stable binding of chromium in the compounds FeCr2O4, Cr3S4 and FeS•Cr2O3.

This paper presents the history of uranium procurement and demand, and takes a look at future requirements. The three basic conclusions drawn are: (1) the productive capacity of former and existing producers whose operations may be profitably reactivated is insufficient to meet demand projected beyond 1975; (2) reserves in the $5 -$10 price range do not provide the flexibility to sustain production at the high rates required in the late 1970's; and (3) only higher prices can overcome these deficiencies, as this would provide sufficient inducement for the industry to explore for and develop new reserves and productive capacity.
