Gyroscopic surveying instruments, which apply the physical law of a gyroscope, are being used for deter-mining the azimuth of lines with a high degree of ac-curacy. In the past ten years, gyro-theodolites have been introduced widely for underground orientation in the mining industry of Russia, Germany and South Africa. Gyroscorpic methods eliminate awkward procedures of conventional shaft plumbing, and provide more safety, excellent control and the highest precision at any point under-ground without interference with hoisting operations. The advantages of gyroscopic orientation in geodetic surveys become obvious in primary and secondary triangulation, in the determination of co-ordinates of single triangulation points, using the method of trigonometric re-section and intersection, and when traversing over long distances or in areas with obstructed view. Other fields of application are found in geophysical surveys and in the orientation of technical objects; e.g. radar stations, relay stations and ballistic missiles.

Titanium aluminides recently replaced Ni-based superalloys as turbine blades in the last LP stage of aircraft engines. To extend their range of use at higher temperature their properties need to be improved, either by alloying or processing. An efficient solution is to reduce the grain size during the solidification process. In the first part of the paper, an overview is given on the possibilities for grain refinement of such alloys, based on literature data and new results. The most efficient grain refinement is obtained with boron addition which leads to boride formations that are detrimental for in-use properties of turbine blades. In this work, the use of the high grain refinement potency of inoculation with non-brittle particles has been used by developing new refractory-based inoculants. The effect of one of these inoculants on grain refinement of an as-cast structure in a Ti-46Al is presented; resulting in a reduction of the grain size by a factor of 3.While less efficient compared to the potency of boron containing alloys, the grain refinement is effective and does not introduce any embrittling particles.

Pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) which could not be recovered, are present in mine tailings discharged from Bor copper mine. About 0.3% of copper (Cu) is contained in these tailings, therefore it can be considered as a useful copper resource. At the same time, pyrite is known to promote acid mine drainage, therefore it is necessary to detoxify the tailings. An efficient method has been proposed to recover copper and reduce the environmental impacts of tailings by a combined hydrometallurgical process of high pressure leaching (HPL), solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) process. HPL process yielded high copper leaching rate (>95%) when water (H2O) was used as a leaching media. On the other hand, pyrite contained in the tailings was converted to iron oxide by high pressure leaching. Stability evaluation of the residue obtained from high pressure leaching, confirmed almost no elution of metal ions. The percentage of copper extracted and stripped from the Cu-loaded organic phase reached 97.4%. Moreover, it was confirmed that a low iron concentration in the electrolyte of copper electrowinning, resulted in the improvement of current efficiency of copper electrodeposition. INTRODUCTION Mine tailings are a by-product obtained from the flotation process and there are billions of tons of already existing tailings all over the world. Moreover, several billion tons of additional copper tailings will inevitably be produced in the coming years (Onuaguluchi & Eren, 2012). With the declining average copper ore grade, alternative sources of copper are highly sought, mine tailings have a comparable copper grade to that of low-grade ores (0.2–0.3%) therefore, it can be said that copper mine tailings present a very important source of secondary raw material for copper production (Antonijevi´c et. al., 2008). Consequently, it is necessary to confirm the possibility of the valuable metals (such as copper) recovery from mine tailing in which copper content is about 0.2–0.3%. Our group investigates the flotation and high pressure leaching processes for recovering of copper from mine tailings. Previous work on related samples include copper and nickel flotation tailings from Botswana, and a low–grade copper ore sample from Chile. Impurities, which are associated metals in mine tailing such as iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) co-dissolve into the solution during the HPL treatment process. Therefore, separation of copper from impurities is necessary for selective extraction of copper from mine tailings and upgrading the copper concentration in the leachate to enable further purifying of Cu by electrowinning. Thus, it is important to investigate the possibility of applying solvent extraction for concentration of copper from leachate solutions of mine tailings (Onuaguluchi & Eren, 2012; Antonijevi´c et. al., 2008). In this study, LIX-84I was used as an extractant of copper from the leachate of high pressure leaching of mine tailing. As a fundamental solvent extraction investigation, the extraction behavior of copper was studied using a simulated solution of the leachate from the high-pressure oxidative leaching of mine tailing. The effects of; solution pH, extraction time, extractant concentration and phase ratio on copper extraction and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration on stripping were investigated.

"AbstractThe Cargill phosphate deposit, located 32 kilometers southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by the Resource Development Group of International Minerals & Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of 190 drill holes, numerous chemical analyses, metallurgical tests, and engineering and economic studies.The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising principally car-bonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded in to the rift system of the Kapuskasing High during late Precambrian time about 1,800 million year s ago, near the intersection of northeast- and northwest- trending faults. The Cargill complex is one of at least ten known alkalic complexes in or close to the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity-high system and is expressed by an elongated, northeast- oriented, three-part magnetic anomaly 7.2 kilometers long by 2.8 kilometers wide . Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool, moist climatic conditions , and controlled by faulting, shearing and/or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite , developed a small, locally confined karst system in the car bonatite rocks and resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone, capped by troughs and sinks, filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals stable in the near -surface, oxidizing environment. Overburden is 5 to 165 meters thick."

The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.

Thin spray-on liners are increasingly being used as rock support in underground mines. The adhesive strength between the liner and the rock surface is an important design parameter. Adhesion tests were conducted to assess the impact on adhesion of the presence of oil, water, and dust on a substrate, and the roughness and grain size of different substrates. Other factors such as curing time, loading rate, and liner thickness were also considered. Adhesion was measured using a pull test of a 33 mm diameter elevator bolt attached to an over-cored section of liner with strong epoxy. Most tests were performed using Tekflex liner material, although five other liner products were also tested. Adhesive strengths of about 2 MPa can be achieved with Tekflex under optimal conditions. Long-term creep tests showed that the adhesive strength could drop by at least 50% when the liner carries load for about a month. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa. As the thickness of the liner increases, the adhesive strength to a substrate appears to decrease.

One of the design criteria for the Mount Wright facilities was to incorporate the latest proven automation techniques and devices for the new crushing, grinding and concentrating plant. The heart of the centralized control system is a Fox 1 process computer, located in the central control room in the administration building. The entire operation, i.e. crushing, conveying, storing, grinding and concentrating, is monitored and controlled, through the process computer , by one operator via a CRT console. In case of computer failure, the control is automatically, and without process interruption, transferred to manual back-up panels. One of the newest management tools, the process computer is programmed to collect and automatically print out shift. daily and monthly reports on tonnage, metallurgy and equipment operating time, for better planning of operations and preventative maintenance.

PRESSURE information has earned a place of recognition to almost everyone interested in oil and gas production. This interest is due chiefly to the multitude of uses to which it can be put. A sub-surface pressure test, conducted for as little as $60, may yield data worth many times its cost. To the uninformed, the testing techniques may seem complex. Fundamentally, however, they consist merely of the application of common sense. At one time, sub-surface pressure data were used only in identifying individual well problems and in finding appropriate solutions. "IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to introduce the reader to rock bolting and its present application in mining.Rock bolting consists of bolting insecure rock to secure rock in order to form a safe structure. The insecure rock may be a weak beam or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is strengthened and held in place before damage can result.Little is known of the limitations of rock bolting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new field of support to the mining industry: it now has a permanent position as a ground control method.HistoryRock bolting is a relatively new means of support, its exact origin being unknown.Bolting has been in use at the St. Joseph Lead Company's property in Southeastern Missouri for the past twenty-six years, the first attempts having been hit-or-miss trials before a systematic attack was made. Many instances of occasional use of rock bolts have come to light .in widely separated mining camps, .some dating back forty years.The first installations were made as supplements to wooden timbering where space was restricted. The BIOX® culture, aiding liberation of arsenopyrite/pyrite occluded gold, is inhibited by thiocyanate (SCN > 1 mg/L); precluding the recycling of tailings water up-stream of the bioleaching circuit. The activated sludge tailings effluent remediation (ASTERTM) process is a biological process that was developed to facilitate water recovery and treat waste water on-site (to achieve a SCN concentration < 1 mg/L) to be recycled or disposed of. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changing temperature and SCN loading on the SCN degradation ability of the mixed microbial population clue to seasonal temperature changes and fluctuations of SCN concentration in the waste water.

Steep Rock Resources Inc. owns a calcite quarry property at Tatlock, Ontario, and a calcite processing plant at Perth, Ontario. The Tatlock marble deposit forms part of an extensive series of carbonate rocks of the Grenville Geological Province in the Precambrian Shield of southeastern Ontario. The deposit is very unusual, if not unique, in the Grenville area in its combination of characteristics of large size, whiteness, high calcium content, low magnesium and silica contents, and scarcity of accessory minerals. A major expansion of the fine grind products capacity of the plant was undertaken in 1982 and came on stream in 1983. The expansion provides important operating benefits at the plant: greater flexibility as to the product mix and reduced dependence on the single grinding mill previously in place. The expanded facility consists of prima,y and secondary crushers, a rotary drye,~ a screenhouse producing a range of screen separator grade products, an airswept Raymond Mill, and a pebble mill with integrated air classifiers, product storage bins, bulk, semi-bulk, and bagged product shipping capabilities, road and rail access, and a substantial product warehouse. The expansion was designed to be compatible with a move into ultrafine calcite production, and is capable of supplying the anticipated sales growth within its market area during the next 5 years. Products are exceptionally white, with good chemistry, low abrasion, and consistent quality. Markets range, according to product particle size, from pre-cast concrete aggregate to fillers for coatings, plastic pipe, and compounds.

Smelting of copper concentrate generates a significant amount of dusts which are collected in electrostatic precipitators. This material, which is a complex oxide of Cu, Fe, S, As, Sb, Bi and others, is difficult to recirculate into the smelting process due to the reported high concentration of arsenic. However, the dust also has concentration of copper above 10wt %, aside from reported contents of silver corresponding as much as 25wt% of the total inventories of this element in the smelters. Thus, it is of economic and environmental interest the development of a process able to reduce the concentration of arsenic in the dust and produce a material suitable to be recirculated into the smelting process. The present experimental work shows the results of a process of dust sulfidization-oxidition able to remove more than 65wt% of the arsenic present. INTRODUCTION Copper sulfide deposits worldwide exhibit increasing concentrations of arsenic. One case of interest would be the copper ores from the northern zone of Chile, which report high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) (Revista química, 2015) (Latinominería, 2014). The obtained concentrate from this ore is treated in a Fluidized Bed Roaster, producing calcines with low concentration of arsenic (<0.5 wt% As). This material is suitable to be treated in a Flash Furnace. At the roasting process, the arsenic is volatilized and then precipitated as fine particles of complex oxides. Most of this particulate material is removed from the gas stream through a device called Electrostatic Precipitator (Minería chilena, 2014). The experimental results reported in the literature indicate that arsenic present in these particulate materials (or dusts) cannot be eliminated in oxidizing atmospheres (air) or with inert gases (N2) in a Fluidized Bed Roaster even at temperatures as high as 700°C. There is also information that even the recovery of valuable metals from the dust is difficult through hydrometallurgical processes (private communication). This is how in some foundries these dusts are considered environmental liabilities. "In the current work, factors influencing the corrosion mechanisms of TiC and Ti(C,N) based cermets are reviewed. Cermets were typically prepared with 30 vol.% of metal binder, in the form of various in-situ reaction-formed Ni3Al alloys. Commercial WC-Co hardmetals were also examined as baseline materials. The assessment of corrosion involved a variety of electrochemical measurements, including open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarisation. The corrosion potential and current density were determined, following Tafel extrapolation, allowing estimation of the corrosion rates. Post-corrosion characterisation involved scanning electron microscopy analysis and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of the sample surfaces. It is demonstrated that the primary corrosion mechanism for this type of cermet is dissolution of the metallic phase during oxidation attack, and thus this response can be expected to increase with the amount of binder in the cermet, although degradation can be subtly affected by composition (i.e. alloy composition, C:N ratio, impurities in the ceramic phase, etc.) and test procedure (i.e. aerated vs. de-aerated electrolytes). It was observed that addition of N content into the ceramic phase is beneficial to the corrosion characteristics of TiC based cermets, through significant refinement in the grain size of the hard phase. Similarly, elimination of impurities, such as W in selected TiC powders, also improves the corrosion resistance.INTRODUCTION Cermets are prepared using the combination of a hard, high elastic modulus ceramic phase with a ductile, high toughness metallic binder. This pairing of hard and ductile components ensures wide application of cermets in demanding wear environments. These materials are consequently used industrially in both bulk and coating form. The most common example of such a composite system is based on the use of tungsten carbide with a cobalt-based binder (WC-Co), which has been widely examined over the past 80 years. However, while WC-Co has been shown to exhibit an excellent combination of high strength and wear resistance, the corrosion and high temperature properties of this material are relatively poor. In addition, WC-Co possesses a high density (~13–14 g/cm3), which makes it a less desirable option when the component mass is a design factor (i.e. use in aerospace). In particular, the aqueous corrosion response of WC-Co limits its use in wear environments where combined corrosive degradation may occur (i.e. tribo-corrosion scenarios). Alternate cermet systems are therefore being actively developed due to these performance limitations."

"The Precambrian sedimentary series of the Labrador geosyncline, including iron formation, extends into southwestern Labrador and adjacent Quebec. The iron formation consisted of primary oxide, silicate, and carbonate facies which were deposited simultaneously in an irregular basin in response to migratory environmental conditions. The iron formation isochemically recrystallized to coarse-grained quartz-iron oxide, iron silicate, and quartz-iron carbon-ate rocks during prolonged regional metamorphism. The rocks are deformed on two deformation axes intersecting at large angles, and are characterized by isoclinal to recumbent folds. Parts of the formation have been profoundly affected by a post-metamorphic leaching and oxidizing environment."

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. "Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

Introduction The development of uranium deposits is a relatively recent phase of mining in Canada. To date, the only producer of uranium ores on a commercial scale has been the Port Radium mine on Great Bear lake, N.W.T. However, with.-in the past few years intensive prospecting has been carried on throughout Canada and many occurrences of uranium-bearing minerals have been discovered. Eldorado has been active in the search for and the exploration of uranium deposits in Canada for a longer period than any other company and has, therefore, accumulated a considerable fund of information, especially about occurrences in Saskatchewan and in the Northwest Territories along the western fringe of the Precambrian Shield. The Company has also had experience in the underground operation, and in the mining, of uranium ores at Port Radium. During the past year or so many requests have been received from the prospecting and mining fraternity for information and guidance regarding the development of the many new uranium discoveries that have been made in Canada. Assistance by Eldorado is freely given whenever possible and this paper is presented to supplement the private discussions and to provide as wide a distribution as possible of the data acquired by Eldorado.

THIS P APER has been pre-pared as a progress report on Mines Branch investigations into problems of ground stress in certain co al mines of Western Canada. As such, it should be considered as a companion report to the one ( 1) presented to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia in 1956 and which dealt with similar investigations in the coal mines of Eastern Canada. For the past 50 years, dynamic incidents in the form of &apos;bumps&apos; and &apos;outbursts&apos; have been occurring in the coal mines of the Inner Foot-hills belt of tl1e Canadian Cordillera. As these phenomena generally become more frequent with in-creased thickness of overburden, a limiting depth of mining of 2,500 feet has been set (2) for estimating recoverable reserves of coal. If such a view were accepted, from a long-term viewpoint very large resources of coking-grade ?coal -in a part of the continent deficient in such coals -would not be available to the nation. The terrain in which these in-6dents take place may be described in geological terms as being dominated by pronounced structure in strata ?consisting of a large proportion of highly indurated rocks. The Geological Survey of Canada has co-operated by carrying out structural studies (3) at the mines, supplemented lithological by stratigraphic observations.
