Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. Enfin, les perspectives relatives à ces études sont présentées et discutées.

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. Zur Bestimmung der anisotropen Eigenschaften der Athen Schiefer wurden einaxialen, dreiaxialen und dynamischen Kompressionsversuchen an Gesteinskernen durchgeführt, bei denen die Belastungsachse verschiedenen Neigungen gegen die Schieferung hat. Die Messreihen an anisotropen unzerreissbaren Fels Samplen von Athen Schiefer wurden statistisch analysiert.

Abstract This paper introduces tested results of rock-socketed pile in Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing. From a force- transfer model, a distribution of axial force for pile-body and inlaid resistance for rock-socketed pile was deduced. Comparing the results of test and calculation, it shows that the calculation result coincide with the test result. Keywords rock-socketed pile, load transfer, inlaid resistance, end resistance. Vom lebendigen Beispiel wird dia Wellenkraft des Steinpfeilera und die Verteilungskurve Einlegebfestigungskraft ausgelegt, man hat diess bereits mit der tatsaechlichen genessenen Kurve verglichen. Résumé - Le présent article décrit de façon succincte des résultats de la recherche sur le mécanisme du transfert de chargement du pieu d’ancrage au massif. Une modèle dynamique du transfert de chargement du pieu d’ancrage au massif est ainsi établie avec l’application des conditions de l’équilibre de contraintes internes et de coordination de la déformation. L’expérimentation sur des exemples réels a permis de mettre à jour des courbes de distribution de la force axiale du corps du pieu et de la force d’ancrage avec comparaison aux courbes effectivement mesurées in situ. Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

This paper was originally presented at the North American/9th US Ventilation Symposium, June 2002, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Reprinted with permission of the publishers, A.A. Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

Discussion by P.J Lloydt Broekman and Penman describe (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 91, Aug. 1991, p. 261) the addition of sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate to the flotation feed at Prieska. They note that for 'safety sake, lime was added to the rod mil to raise the pH to 9,5', and that 'personnel working in the vicinity of the rod mil were required to wear gas masks'. Author reply to P.J. Lloyd We thank Dr Lloyd for his interesting contribution. As he correctly points out, the Prieska float had run with cyanide solutions at pH values of 6,4. In fact, it ran safely for extended period with the pH slightly below 6.

TALK The Chairman invited Mr A. Paschalides to deliver his talk on 'Controlled blasting in stopes and new explosives developments'. The presentation proved to be of great interest to the meeting and lively discussion followed the talk. Mr N. A. Honnet proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Paschalides on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. CLOSURE The Chairman thanked Mr Paschalides for his talk and all present for their attendance, and as this was the last meeting for 1970 he wished all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

1 Initiating Systems ? a definition An initiation system is a combination of explosive devices and component accessories specifically designed to convey a signal and initiate an explosive charge from a safe distance. In the use of explosives, the initiating system performs the functions of transmission and control of the firing signal to each explosive charge. As functional groups, initiating systems may be considered as: Starters Those which provide the initial signal to start the blasting process. Surface systems Products which provide transmission of the starter signal and delay timing (if any) across the surface of the blast outside the blast hole. In-hole systems Products which provide the signal transmission, delay timing (if any) and the initial explosives energy in the blast hole.1 2 Different types of Initiating Systems The initiation systems commonly used in Sub Saharan Africa are: ? Detonating cord and detonating relay systems ? Capped fuse and igniter cord systems ? Shock tube non electric systems ? Electric systems ? Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. La stabilité des talus des roches est très influence par la courbure de celles ci dans la vue en plan.Son importance de l peut arriver à sauver même $100 millions. Il est considère qu il y a deux facteurs importants qui jouent une influence sur cette courbure. Il s’agit de l’effet des contraintes et l’effet de la structure géologique. La brève littérature qui se réfère à cet aspect du conception sur le talus des roches a été revue. L’influence géométrique de la courbure des plans a été investiguée. Il a été vu que cela un effet parabolique sur la bosse ou le su relèvement maximum possible qui peut faillir dans un puits circulaire, ou le plus resserre est la courbure concave, le plus petit est su relèvement (bosse). La courbure plane aussi affecte le volume d’un particulier su relèvement ou les talus concaves résultent dans une décroissance exponentielle en volume alors que les talus convexes accroissent la volume de ces su relèvements (bosse). Le changement de l’orientation de la bosse (su relèvement) perpendiculairement ou obliquement n’ a par affecte l’influence de al courbure sur le volume mais les volumes des bosse (su relèvement) peu profonds étaient affectes par la courbure des plans. Der Wert von diesem in der Tagebaugrube wird durch die diese Tatsache, in einer tiefen Grube, steepening der Steigungen durch 1° angezeigt; kann soviel wie $100 Million speichern. Es wird betrachtet, daß es zwei bedeutende Faktoren gibt, die eine Rolle im Einfluß der Planbiegung spielen. Diese zwei Faktoren sind der Effekt des Druckes und der Effekt der geologischen Struktur. Die dürftige Literatur, die diesen Aspekt des Felsensteigungdesigns betrifft, wurde wiederholt. Der geometrische Einfluß der Planbiegung wurde dann nachgeforscht. Es wurde gesehen, daß es einen Parabolischen Effekt auf dem maximalen möglichen Keil hat, der in eine kreisförmige Grube ausfallen kann, wo, das fester die konkave Biegung, das kleiner der Keil. Die Planbiegung beeinflußt auch das Volumen eines bestimmten Keils, in dem konkave Steigungen eine exponentiale Abnahme an den Volumen ergeben und konvexe Steigungen exponential Keilvolumen erhöht haben. In the challenging environments of deep-level, narrow tabular orebody gold mines in South Africa, rock mass classification offers a potential method for predicting hazardous areas and optimising rock support systems. This study evaluates the applicability of various rock mass classification systems, with a focus on the Modified or Mining Rock Mass Rating system tailored for high-stress, deep-level mining conditions. Extensive data collection was conducted at Kusasalethu Mine, involving underground mapping and analysis of the 2020/2021 fall of ground database. The Mining Rock Mass Rating system was adapted to the unique geological and operational conditions, providing a simplified, user-friendly approach for rock engineering and geology personnel. Results indicate that this adapted Mining Rock Mass Rating system effectively quantifies rock mass conditions and influences proactive mining adjustments. The study’s findings highlight the system's capability to enhance understanding of rock mass behaviour and substantially mitigate the occurrence of rockfalls and ground collapses. Further application and refinement of the system are recommended to continuously improve mining safety and efficiency.

Scheduling the extraction and rates of production for an underground mining operation is a common task carried out during the life of a mine, from the initial feasibility study through to the final production phase. The scheduling process can be complex when several requirements have to be satisfied, for example, match mill capacity and maximize net present value while constrained by mining sequence and availability of resources. Many mines have computer programs relevant to their operation but because they are site-specific they need considerable reprogramming to be adapted to other operations. Other methods currently in use also suffer drawbacks: manual spreadsheets are laborious, computerized spreadsheets cannot handle sufficient constraints, and operations research techniques require a complex mathematical model to be set up. The use of network analysis techniques has been proposed previously but the unavailability, until recently, of easily used computer programs has not allowed this approach to be developed. There are now many programs which can be used; however, the particular program which has been adapted to mine scheduling is Metier's 'Artemis-PC' running on IBM-XT or compatible machine. The use of network analysis offers many advantages, including the use of a logical mining sequence; activities can be as detailed as required; related activities can be readily incorporated, and costs can be easily extracted. A heuristic approach is necessary to optimize the schedule, but the ease and speed of program execution enables this to be readily achieved, while leaving the mining engineer in full control. The paper discusses the problems encountered in mine scheduling and current solutions. It then details the use of network analysis techniques and the application of the Artemis-PC program to solve mine scheduling problems.

Professor R.P. King holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, which he obtained at the University of Manchester in 1963. After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

The application of modifying factors to the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Layer has a number of challenging aspects as the deposits are tabular and consist of a number of separate geological entities that are grade bearing. The important aspects of the conversion include mineral holdings, dilution with grade bearing material, mining and geological losses, marginal cut offs and recoveries especially where open pit or weathered material is being considered. It is considered inappropriate to add material for dilution at zero grade as the associated material generally comes with an associated low grade. The Merensky Reef Is typically a pegmatoidal feldspathic pyroxenite with bounding chromitite layers. The Merensky Reef is senso stricto too narrow to be considered as a mineable entity and therefore any reserve must include material at low or marginal grades. This is further complicated as the typical mine cut or approach varies across a mine of project. This variation must be included in the mineral reserve conversion. The UG2 Chromitite Layer is typically lithologically bounded i.e. chromitite hosted. However, this adds interesting aspects particularly where leaders are intersected in the hangingwall. These can contribute to unstable hangingwall. It may be considered appropriate to include these in the mineral reserve. One of the overarching principles is that the reserve can be demonstrates to be feasible i.e. can be mined at a profit. Here aspects of a feasibility including infrastructure (power, water etc) needs to be properly considered. The paper will attempt to describe these and other relevant issues and highlight examples from experience together with proposed solutions.
