A computer-aided blast design consultant system has been developed. The software consists of two modules: one uses theoretical and empirical formulae and procedures to design a blast based on user supplied geological and mechanical data, while the other is an expert system that analyzes blast vibration problems and recommends remedial action using knowledge based rules. The system is currently undergoing field evaluation.

Difficulties with the screening of large volumes of pulp to remove plus 600 /km material before the adsorption circuit and to retain plus 20-mesh carbon in the adsorption contactors have largely been solved, with the result that the plant can now handle its design throughput. The elution and electrowinning processes have been modified to simplify the circuit, but the regeneration of carbon remains unsatisfactory. The production of fine carbon in the plant can lead to increased gold losses, and this carbon must be collected and treated. Collection methods for fine carbon and some indications of the quantity of the carbon and its gold values are given.

Strategic mine planning is concerned with the decisions that determine the value of the business, while tactical planning deals with the tasks to realize that value. When tasked with formulating a strategic mine plan, the mining engineer often turns to commercially available software. However, these software packages have limited applicability to the RBM situation. Adopting a simpler, back to basics approach founded on a deep understanding of the economics of the orebody has the advantage of providing a clear logic to guide tactical planning. By creating a coherency between strategic mine planning, and tactical planning the likelihood of successfully executing the plans and attaining the value promised by the strategic plan is increased. This paper describes the reasons why RBM embarked on a strategic mine planning process, the rationale of choosing the process, and the process itself.

Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, and evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. Audit opinion In our opinion, the financial statements fairly present, in all material respects, the financial position of the trust at 30 June 2005 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

The paper explains the main effects of input leaching parameters, such as addition of a reducing agent, acidity, agitation, temperature, and leaching system potential, in relation to observed and predicted yields of sought-after cobalt. An artificial neural network coupled with graphical probability networks was developed wherein the abovementioned input parameters were used to predict the percentage of dissolved cobalt. Furthermore, similarities and differences between the Bayesian and neural network approaches in terms of their key outcomes are compared with respect to study of the dissolution of cobalt in sulfuric acid. Key results indicate that there is a need to use neural network results to predict conditions for dissolution of cobalt, while using Bayesian network to explain inferences about conditions of the input parameters, thereby achieving realistic predictions.

Metallurgical simulation and evaluation of the resource efficiency of whole production processes are of key importance for impact assessment, in terms of environment and resources. Exergy is a measure of resource consumption, taking into account energy, raw materials, water, and chemicals; which allows for the evaluation of different technologies to find the most resource efficient and environmentally friendly process. This paper compares the sustainability for production of rare earth magnets from primary and secondary resources through an exergetic evaluation of the production process, in addition to traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). The methodology makes use of simulation tools for tracking material flow and resources used, based on thermodynamic laws, from ore exploitation to magnet production and recycling. It highlights areas with the greatest potential for improvements in terms of resource consumption and environmental impact generation, having a thermodynamic-validated flowsheet for primary and secondary production of NdFeB magnets, present in several low-carbon technologies, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and cooling systems. It demonstrates the minimum exergy destruction for magnet production, through an irreversibility breakdown chart, showing where irreversible material and energy losses occur. Results show that CO2-equivalent emissions for producing NdFeB permanent magnets from primary resources could be twice as high when compared to magnets produced from recycling technologies. The theoretical maximum exergetic efficiency for primary production is 57.61%, whereas for permanent magnets produced from secondary resources, the exergetic efficiency reaches up to 82.89%. Two magnet recycling technologies were evaluated, i.e. in acidic medium and via hydrogen decrepitation, and it was observed that their exergetic efficiency and environmental impact performed better than production from primary resources. Namakwa Sands, an Anglo Operations Limited subsidiary, is a world-class producer of heavy minerals. A layer of duricrust imposes a pseudo-stratigraphy to the primary deposit and has sterilized part of the generally unconsolidated ore in the open cast mine. The bulk of this ore cannot be treated by the present infrastructure, which employs conventional mineral separation technology. The mineralogy of the cementing agent consists of magnesium and calcium silicates and minor carbonates in addition to clay minerals such as sepiolite and those from the smectite group. Although the duricrust ore is friable and can be easily crushed, the significant clay-sized slime fraction produced, in particular the highly sorptive sepiolite, adversely affects mineral separation. The geometallurgical challenge is to cost-effectively remove the slimes from the ore before it is delivered to the concentrator.

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. If the grade is very low, treatment will not be economic even with upgrading, and there is therefore a limited range of ore grades for which upgrading is suitable.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. Hillendale Mine is operated by Exxaro KZN Sands, and is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa near the towns of Empangeni and Richards Bay, some 200 km north of Durban. During the mining operation the heavy minerals rutile, ilmenite, zircon and leucoxene are extracted for further beneficiation at a processing complex near the town of Empangeni. The deposit contains approximately 25% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction), and is mined using hydraulic monitoring. Run of mine is gravity fed down launders to pump stations, which deliver the material to a primary wet plant. Slimes is separated from the run of mine prior to the heavy minerals being separated from the sand. Sand tails containing approximately 2-5% slimes is pumped to the mining void. The slimes is thickened to a density of approximately 1.2, and most of the resultant material is pumped to a sub-aerial deposition site (residue dam). The area is characterized by an annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm, which is relatively high by South African standards. From an agricultural perspective the soils are deep and well weathered. Dryland agriculture has been practised on an extensive scale in the area for the past 70 years. Sugar cane in particular is cultivated on and around the mine area. In terms of environmental approvals, the post-mining land use and objectives are defined as economically viable and sustainable sugar cane cultivation in the mined areas. During mining the soil profile is destroyed. In this paper the establishment of a reconstituted soil profile is discussed, with specific reference to the methodology that is being followed to achieve the homogeneous blending of sand and slimes. Defining the rehabilitation strategy and soil specification Strategically Exxaro KZN Sands divided rehabilitation into four aspects, comprising physical rehabilitation (restoration of soil structure), vegetative rehabilitation (restoration of vegetative cover), ecological rehabilitation (restoration of sustainable ecological communities), and sustainability (sustainable man/environment interface) (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). It is believed that the key to successful rehabilitation lies in achieving a substrate (soil) suitable for the establishment of the target vegetation. During the development of the rehabilitation strategy the key factor in the establishment of a suitable soil profile was shown to be the soil water retention of this material. Since dryland agriculture is practised, this aspect becomes critically important in ensuring that the post-mining land use is sustainable (Hattingh et al., in prep.). From a financial perspective, a closure certificate being issued implies that the state takes over financial liability for the rehabilitated land. This has significant implications for the state-the default position will be that all possible latent and residual impacts must be identified and known prior to a closure certificate being issued. From the mine's perspective this precautionary approach by the state implies that post-operational costs cannot be quantified exactly, and our approach is therefore to mitigate the risk of a long post-closure care and maintenance phase by means of addressing all potential latent defects during the operational rehabilitation phase. The financial viability of the soil reconstitution process itself is therefore not measured against other rehabilitation methods, but against the risk of not achieving closure. During a series of technical workshops comprising experts in the various disciplines in the rehabilitation of the soil profile were identified. These aspects include the re-establishment of a functional soil profile, soil physical characteristics, soil chemistry, soil biota, salinization potential, erodibility and soil weathering. The natural soils in the Hillendale area have been classified in terms of the South African soil classification system (MacVicar and co-workers, 1991) and consist of Hutton (orthic topsoils on red apedal subsoils) and Clovelly (orthic top soils on yellow apedal subsoils) soil forms. The topsoils consistently comprise medium to fine grained sand overlying heavier textured sandy clay loam to clayey subsoils. The topsoil structure consists of a single grain structure, whereas subsoils are apedal. These soils are typically deeply weathered and do not show secondary structures. During the mining process a layer of topsoil (300 mm) is stripped off, and the balance of the material down to the footwall is processed. Sand with 2-5% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction) is returned as backfill in order to re-establish the dune to approximate the previous landform. From an agricultural perspective this material is not suitable for the dryland cultivation of sugar cane. A capping of more suitable material therefore has to be provided. The most significant difference between the premining soil form and the backfill material is the percentage slimes, consequently a mixture of the sand and slimes is required as a capping over the backfilled sand. The required thickness of the cap is a function of specifically plant growth requirements, erodibility, weathering and runoff (Hattingh, et al.; in prep.). The percentage slimes required in the cap is a function of mainly soil water requirements (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). The conservative indications to date show that the reconstituted soil profile should consist of a homogeneously blended mixture of 70%-80% sand and 30%-20% slimes up to a maximum of 2 metres thick. This will be sufficient to ensure growth during dry periods.

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterization, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterization of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilized at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterization of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4?4.7 and zircon RD4.6?4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide, with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of high-temperature heat treatment on the electrical resistivity of charcoal. Samples of two different wood types (eucalyptus and black wattle) were pyrolised in a retort at a temperature of 700°C and the resulting charcoals heat-treated in an induction furnace at temperatures from 800°C to 1800°C and residence times from 60 to 120 minutes. After cooling, the resistivities of the samples were measured at room temperature using the four-point probe technique. It was found that as the heat treatment temperature increased the electrical resistivity of the charcoal decreased, approaching an asymptotic value at higher temperatures. Longer residence times decreased the resistivity, but this effect was not pronounced.

Today the roller screen has a wide range of applications in the steel-making industry. It is used for screening of green pellets before using the kiln. Since the appropriate size of a green pellet is -16+9 mm, there are different gaps between rollers that make green pellets classified in three categories: -9 mm (undersize), -16+9 mm (onsize) and +16mm (oversize). The efficiency of a roller screen is specified according to the weight percent of undersize in onsize as a fine material, and weight percent of onsize in oversize (loss). This efficiency is influenced by different operational parameters such as roller diameter, roller speed, and roller gap, material type of rollers and inclination of roller screen. This study investigates the effect of different material types of rollers in efficiency of Ardakan roller screens, located in the Yazd province of Iran. The rollers of the existing roller screens in this pelletising plant are made of polyurethane which according to this investigation, has a maximum lifetime of about six months. Operating the polyurethane rollers beyond its lifetime generates serious problems such as high wear of rollers, and consequently, material buildup on the roller surface which then significantly decreases the roller screen efficiency. So, after examining different roller materials, stainless steel 304 with higher surface roughness to help pellets move properly on the roller screen surface was selected as a solution to this problem. The new roller screen was constructed by Fakoor Meghnatis Spadana (FMS) and replaced the previous one. In this way, the maximum capacity of the roller screen was increased about 17% and the roller screen efficiency was increased about 15%. In this paper, the authors performed experiments in the Denver and Leeds laboratory flotation devices at the University of Pretoria at various particle sizes to evaluate the performance of the devices. Quartz was used in a single mineral system at discrete sizes fractions, -25 μm, +25- 45 μm, +45-75 μm, and +75-106 μm. Hydrodynamic analysis, based on dimensionless power and Reynolds numbers, indicated that the Leeds cell required higher power input to achieve comparable flow conditions. Specifically, the Leeds cell exhibited an average power number of 1.03, whereas the Denver cell averaged 0.77 within the same impeller speed range of 1000 rpm–1500 rpm. For comparative flotation performance, impeller speeds were calibrated, resulting in operating speeds of 1200 rpm for the Denver cell and 1400 rpm for the Leeds cell. The cells performed similarly at two coarser-sized fractions. However, some deviations were observed in the finer particle size range. The -25 μm (fine) fraction initially achieved a recovery of only 15%. An additional reagent dosage was required to enhance the recovery of this fraction significantly. These findings highlighted the influence of particle size on flotation recovery. For all experiments, the Denver laboratory flotation cell outperformed (defined by higher recovery) the Leeds device, while still operating at a lower impeller speed. This advantage can be attributed to its impeller-stator design and air dispersion features, effectively overcoming slurry resistance and resulting in superior flotation performance compared to the Leeds cell.

Body breakage usually involves breakage of particles by compression between two surfaces or impacted against a rigid surface, with the latter of interest in this current study. This mode of breakage has been identified to be the most elementary size reduction process and the most effective breakage process in comminution devices. It has been found in the literature that the progenies produced from this form of breakage possess a residual velocity at which they move, after the breakage event. In the pursuit of efficiently utilising applied comminution energy, a laboratory-scale breakage device has been developed to deliver precise specific impact breakage using the concept of a fast-moving hammer and a slow-moving particle to effect breakage. The residual velocities of the progenies from the breakage event may be used to generate secondary breakage without further addition of energy if the particle encounters a stiff obstacle such as a steel plate at right angles to its path. To measure the extent of secondary breakage, the steel wall of the device was lined with a rubber material to suppress the second set of breakage events. The performance of the new device is analysed, based on calculated t10 values and measured residual velocities of the moving daughter particles. Testing involving anvils showed a much finer PSD and higher t10 compared to the test involving rubber lining. This finding is corroborated by the measured residual velocities of the progenies. The resulting energies calculated from the measured residual velocities of the progeny were found to be approximately 42-88% of the primary specific impact energy.
