One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

"The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."

Smith in presenting his paper was that the planning aid outlined in the preprint was neither sophisticated nor complicated. However, it was a system which worked and was a very real way in which the computer was being used to assist miners, in particular, who at the present moment have very little experience in the use of computers.Mr Smith apologised for the fact that the editors of the paper had eliminated all reference to 'time'. This was very unfortunate because the essence of the system was that it saved time, which was one of the main points made in the paper.The operations being planned by this means cover the Rokana orebody which is a stratiform body mined by open stoping.The planner has to decide how much ore to mine from each base in each time period of his plan, that is, from three to four months hence to a year ahead. Normal procedure is for the planner to have discussions with the underground manager on some of the information he requires. The sort of information needed is (i) tramming limits for each face, (ii) extraction and grade factors, (iii) the present status of mining operations so that the planner knows where to start the new plan, and, (iv) details of any other mining consider¬ations that need to be incorporated in the plan.The objective at this point is to produce an initial plan for discussion purposes. All the information required comes from one sheet per stops and shows, inter alia, the stope identifier, the length along strike, the ore tonnage, the copper and cobalt grades and, finally, the extraction and grade factors.The program itself, among many other things, checks the data for validity, compatibility, completeness and credibility and prints error messages accordingly. Output from this system is in the form of a summary of production from each face, as well as giving the figures of ore reserve depletion. This summary indicates which slopes are to be mined in this time period, the original survey grades (copper and cobalt), the estimated production grades, how much is to be mined from each stope and the copper and cobalt production accordingly."

The mining industry has yet to fully accept and embrace the strategic role of technology and innovation in successful business planning and execution. In this study, we empirically determine the factors that influence acceptance of technology solutions in the mining industry in South Africa, assess critical success factors influencing adoption of advanced technology in the South African mining industry, and explore challenges faced by the mining industry in South Africa in adopting advanced technology in its operations. Thematic content analysis is employed in the data analysis. Results show that critical success factors to the adoption of mining technology include learning culture, knowledge sharing, high labour costs, and behaviour of other firms in the industry; commonly identified challenges include inadequate engagement with external stakeholders, uncertainties, the cyclical nature of the sector, and high risk related to the adoption of unproven technology and performance systems focused on volumetric production. The study encourages mining companies to implement usage of technology. This can be properly done through regular engagement with the Minerals Council South Africa.

Inorganic acids such as sulphuric acid have found use together with certain reducing agents in leaching of copper-cobalt oxide ores. These reagents are not ideal due to the adverse effect the inorganic acids generally have on the environment and the high costs of the reducing agents. In this study a copper-cobalt oxide ore from the Central African Copperbelt was leached in two different environments; sulphuric acid in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent and tartaric acid. The effects of acid concentration, reducing agent concentration, and temperature were independently determined for both leaching environments. The sulphuric acid concentration was varied between 0.4 M and 1.2 M and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide between 4.0 M and 6.5 M, while the tartaric acid concentration was varied between 0.15 M and 0.35 M. The temperature was varied between 20°C and 50°C. The results showed that the extraction of both copper and cobalt increased with sulphuric acid concentration, reaching a peak at approximately 0.8 M and then decreasing at higher acid concentrations. A similar increase and decrease in metal extraction was observed when the reducing agent was increased. In leaching with tartaric acid, the extraction of cobalt was much higher than that of copper, although extraction of both metals increased with acid concentration. Additions of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide were found to increase cobalt extraction in tartaric acid but had a minimal effect on copper. An increase in the solution temperature had a significant effect in the organic acid environment, with the effect on cobalt extraction being much more pronounced than on copper.

Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

For gold plants in Russia, it is very complicated and costly to use cyanide leaching for efficient processing of gold refractory ores, where gold is closely associated with sulphide minerals and the significant amount of natural carbonaceous matter present. Oxidative roasting of gold refractory concentrates is a well-known method, making it possible to obtain a high recovery rate of precious metals to a target product. The use of oxidative roasting is limited in general by the expense of capturing and neutralising the harmful components of roasted gas, mainly sulphur (SO2, SO3) and arsenic (As2O3) oxides. This paper addresses testing and development of an optimised technology to process gold refractory gravity and flotation concentrates by means of oxidative roasting which stabilises arsenic as calcium arsenate. The process involves roasting of a gravity or flotation refractory ore concentrate in a mixture with lime and calcium chloride, with a supply of oxygen, and at 600-700°С. During the roasting a carbonaceous matter of the concentrate burns out and sulphide components transform into harmless calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2), and iron passes into the form of hematite (Fe2O3). After disintegration, the roasting cinder is concentrated on a table to obtain a high-grade gravity concentrate and gravity tailings. The high-grade gravity concentrate is subject to smelting in a mixture with fluxing agents, which results in alloyed gold and slag. The gravity tailings are ground and reported to cyanide leaching. In the case of a flotation concentrate, the roast cinder is ground to minus 30 μm and subject to sorption cyanide leaching. High gold recovery (90-95%) of the target product and environmental safety are typical of the improved technology under consideration. Two national patents were granted for the methods developed to treat refractory concentrates bearing precious metals. "Typical operation of industrial Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) used in copper smelting results in several common phenomena such as excessive splashing, slopping, tuyere blockage, and low converter campaign life due to high tuyere line refractory erosion. These phenomena give rise to an inefficient operation from both a process and an energy perspective.This investigation presents numerical and physical models of flow patterns, mixing, solid-liquid mass transfer, and slag-matte phase distribution in a slice model of an industrial PSC. For physical simulations, a 0.2-scale cold model was developed. Water, kerosene, air, and sintered benzoic acid compacts were used to simulate matte, slag, injected gas, and solid additions into the PSC. The two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e (RKE) turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial computational fluid dynamics numerical code FLUENT.Both numerical and physical simulations were able to predict, in agreement, the mixing and dispersion characteristics of the system in relation to various blowing conditions employed in the investigation. Measurement of mass transfer characteristics conclusively indicated that fluid flow in the PSC is stratified. Both blowing configuration and volume of slag in the converters were found to have significant effects on mixing propagation, wave formation, and splashing.The splashing and wave motion in these converters are known to cause losses of metal/matte and potential production time due to the requirement for intermittent cleaning of the converter mouth, resulting in reduced process throughput. To prevent these losses and hence to increase process efficiency, we propose a combined blowing configuration using top lance and lateral nozzles. The numerical simulations were conducted on combined, as well as lateral, blowing conditions. In comparison, the recent results of the combined blowing concept were found to be encouraging."

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

"SynopsisThe physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production.IntroductionChromite, a mineral of the spinel group, is the only commercially viable source of virgin chromium units. Geologically, commercial chromite deposits in the world are found in three forms, i.e. alluvial-, podiform-, and stratiform-type deposits (Murthy et al., 2011; Cramer et al., 2004). Alluvial deposits were formed by weathering of chromite-bearing rock with the subsequent release of chromite and gravity concentration by flowing water. However, these deposits are relatively small and of comparatively minor commercial interest. Podiform-type chromite deposits usually occur as irregularly shaped pods or lenses, and their distribution within a mineralized zone is usually relatively erratic and unpredictable, making the exploration of these deposits difficult and costly (Cramer et al., 2004). Stratiform-type chromite deposits occur as parallel seams in large, layered igneous rock complexes with more regular layering and lateral continuity (Cramer et al., 2004). The largest example of a stratiformtype chromite deposit is the Bushveld Complex (BC) in South Africa, which holds an estimated three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources (Cramer et al., 2004).Several chromite seams exist in the BC. The seams of economic interest are the Lower Group 6 (LG6), the Middle Group 1 and 2 (MG1 and 2), and the Upper Group 2 (UG2) seams (Cramer et al., 2004). The LG and MG seams are specifically exploited for their chromium content, while the UG2 seam is mined primarily as a source of platinum group minerals (PGMs) (Xiao and Laplante 2004). Extraction of the PGMs from the UG2 ore usually involves the liberation of the sulphide by milling and subsequent recovery of the PGM concentrate through flotation (Xiao and Laplante, 2004). Chromite in the PGM concentrate is undesirable; therefore, PGM recovery circuits are specifically designed to ensure maximum rejection of the chromite to the tailings stream. However, the chromite in the PGM tailings can potentially serve as feedstock for ferrochrome (FeCr) production, after beneficiation to increase the chromium content."

Today’s mining operations require fast reporting and rapid rescheduling based on updated information. An automatic mine scheduling system could not only quickly reschedule but also propose alternative solutions. To avoid the financial and physical risks associated with testing such a system directly in operation, it could be first evaluated via discrete event simulation models. This would offer a safe environment to evaluate different operating rules and algorithms. In this study, this is achieved by integrating automatic scheduling software with a discrete event simulation model.

The copper tankhouse at Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery is an essential component of the Anglo American Platinum value chain. The tankhouse uses starter-sheet technology that was adopted in the 1980s, so dependence on manually intensive labour and overall operational excellence has a significant impact on process performance. An efficient, stable, and sustainable electrowinning process contributes to minimising energy consumption and reducing operational costs, and enables improved product quality and increased throughput. Historic performance of this tankhouse has often been suboptimum over prolonged periods. An in-depth operational review of performance from 2018–2024 was carried out to understand challenges, risks, and high-impact factors that contribute to poor performance. Implementation of adherence to fundamental operational basics identified from global best practice, such as the frequency and quality of cell cleaning and maintenance, preventing backlogged harvesting or maintenance, preserving cell-top furniture conditions and integrity of electrodes, preventing short circuits and poor current distribution, and maintaining a high level of operational discipline, has since contributed to an era of exceptional performance. Root-cause analysis fault trees pertaining to poor current efficiency and high scrap rate are summarised. Current efficiency has significantly improved since 2021, now consistently exceeding 88%. The copper scrap rate, previously believed to be limited to a minimum of 4%, achieved a historic monthly low record of 2.06% in 2023. Chemical and physical quality has considerably improved, and cathodes exhibit minimal morphological defects.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. It is proposed that the physical and chemical composition of individual mineral particles are an appropriate basis from which to model the performance of minerals processing equipment. Such a particle-based approach enables modelling across disciplines such as comminution, classification and flotation and automatically generates the traditional mass and chemistry balances. The general approach followed is to generate full grade-recovery curves for a separator by sampling product and tailings at varying mass yields. AutoSEM characterisation of each sample provides particle data that is used to reconcile mineral deportment and liberation to the measured size and assay data. In this way, partition surfaces can be generated and modelled. In this paper, an empirical model for the performance of a gravity spiral concentrator treating fine chromite ore is proposed. The model is based on the combination of two partition surfaces and is able to accommodate both forward and reverse gravity concentration effects per size fraction. The results show that this approach is well suited to represent spiral performance for the cases evaluated. The effect of two feed particle size distributions on the performance of the Multotec SC21 and SC25 spirals is demonstrated. Simulations are run in an Excel environment, linked to Python-enabled routines for enhanced data management and calculation speed. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. Rock mass damage induced by mining increases the fracture frequency and joint aperture width in the pit walls and rock mass behind open pit mine slopes. The depth and intensity of this mechanical damage relative to the pre-mining state is not well understood and yet is a major factor in the development of slope stability models and operational guidelines. The induced damage can be partitioned into domains or zones. The blast damage zone is essentially a ‘free flow’ rock mass volume, which transitions quite rapidly into the excavation damage zone, which extends beyond that. In both zones, transient high in situ water pressures are often linked to unstable slope conditions. Whereas rock damage can enhance passive depressurisation in the rock mass, high infiltration rates on the other hand, as one could expect during rainstorm events, will decrease slope stability within the dilated pit rock mass, especially in the blast damage zone-excavation damage zone, by increasing pore pressures for short periods of time. Ice jacking and freshet are additional factors to consider in (sub) arctic environments and can be exacerbated by unfavorable rock fabric orientation. On a local scale, brittle deformation damage zones, in the form of faults, can contribute to slope instability, or enhanced stability because of slope depressurisation, depending on their location and orientation relative to the pit shape and the water sources. In this study, the shapes of the damage zones and their anticipated impact on infiltration and/or passive depressurisation are considered for different pit morphologies, rock mass conditions, in situ stress, and hydrogeological settings. Some unusual hydrological situations, like mining towards rivers and lakes and the potential effects on pore pressures, are also considered. This investigation has resulted in the development of a method to adjust initial hydraulic conductivity values used to estimate transient pore pressure conditions found in rock masses exposed in different pit morphologies and stress regimes as well as discontinuities’ orientation relative to open faces within the open pit mine. The changes in K values and pore pressures can then be used to determine hydrogeological influence more accurately on future pit slope stability.
