South Africa hosts some of the world?s largest known resources and reserves of minerals that are strategically important to the global economy. The country?s mining industry contributes significantly to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product, export earnings, corporate tax receipts, remuneration earnings, and employment. Platinum, gold, and coal are significant minerals because they make the largest individual contributions to these economic indicators. Several factors impact the cash cost performance of operations that mine these minerals, thus affecting the future sustainability of these operations, which are generally ?price-takers?. It is therefore important that the cash cost performance of operations for these key minerals is analysed. Commercially available industry cost curves can be used for such analysis. However, some companies may not be able to afford to purchase these curves. This paper presents a simple Microsoft Excel® algorithm for constructing the curves. It also demonstrates how the constructed industry curves were used to analyse the cash cost performance of South African mining operations for the three selected minerals for the period 2007 to 2011, which included the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis revealed that the operations were affected by several global and local factors during the review period. The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at 30th June, 1999, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

Since 1994, South Africa has been the subject of international attention, especially in regard to its transformation initiatives, which aim to redress the post-apartheid imbalances. Mining, as a major employer and one of the major industries in South Africa, has been the focus of the government?s Black Economic Empowerment initiative with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The historical background to South Africa?s transformation and the role of the mining industry are pivotal to an appreciation of certain aspects of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The issues around Black Economic Empowerment and the enabling of a smooth transition to the South African mining industry of the future are explored in this paper.

Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

Abstract : The computation of reliability index or failure probability of slopes can be transformed into an optimisation problem. In high rock slope engineering, it is usually a multimodal optimization problem. The traditional optimization techniques are difficulty to find out the global optimal solution because of their easily falling into local optimal value. Recently, a new kind of bionic algorithm - ant colony algorithm (ACA) - has been used to solve this problem. In this paper, the structure of ant colony algorithm and the transfer probability of ants are modified to evaluate the failure probability of complicated slopes. A new adaptive ant colony algorithm (AACA) is proposed to determine critical slip surface and its corresponding failure probability of complicated slopes. A case study is given to verify the proposed approach. The results show that the presented method has obvious advantages compared with traditional methods. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Rechnung des Zuverlaessigkeitindexes oder der Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit kann sich in einer Optimierungsfrage umwandeln, im Bauprojekt an hoehe Gebirgehang, handelt es sich meistens um eine Optimierungsfrage ueber Multi- Spitzenwert. Mit der traditionelle Optimierungsmethode ist es schwer eine umfassende Loesung fuer die Optimierung zu finden wegen des leichte Verfallens in Beschraenkung der Teiloptimierungsloesung. Mit dem neue Bionik- Algorithmus —— Ameisen - Kolonie- Algorithmus wird dieses Problem geloest. In diesem Text hat man eine Strukturverbesserungsloesung fuer das Ameisen- Kolonie -system und die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ameisenkolonie erwaehnt, und damit wird man die Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit des komplizierte Hangs feststellen. Mit dem neuen Ameisen- Kolonie- Algorithmus kann man die gefaehrlichste Gleitflaeche und die entsprechende Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit herausfinden. Die in diesem Text beschriebene Methode wurde durch Praxis geprueft. Durch die Pruefergebnisse wurde es gezeigt und bestaetigt, dass der neue Bionik- Algorithmus vorteilhafter als der traditionelle Algorithmus ist. Résumé : Le calcul de l’indice la fiabilité ou de la probabilité de ruptures peut être transformé en un problème de l’optimisation. Pour le cas du génie des pentes de haut rocher , le problème se pose en général en l’optimisation de multi-crêtes. Les techniques traditionnelles conduisent facilement à la solution optimal partielle au lieu de celle globale. Récemment un nouveau type de bionique algorithmique a été appliqué pour la solution de ce genre de problèmes, c’est l’Algorithme Colonie de Fourmis. Dans l’article il est proposé de modifier la structure du système de la colonie de fourmis et la probabilité de transfert des fourmis en vue d’évaluer la probabilité de ruptures des pentes de haut rocher complexes, par ailleurs un nouveau algorithme adapté de colonie de fourmis est formulé pour déterminer la surface glissante critique et la probabilité de ruptures correspondante. Les techniques proposées dans l’article sont vérifiées à travers des expérimentations dont les résultats ont prouvé que les techniques présentées dans l’article sont évidemment meilleures que celles traditionnelles.

At first I read this paper with interest, which grew to fascination, and ended up with horror. Such reactions to a supposedly scientific contribution are rare, and I believe the coal mining community must be warned in the strongest possible terms against the recommendations that this paper makes. The paper purports to have assessed statistically two sets of data on methane concentrations recorded in the return air from Turkish longwalls. The first set of data, from their Table I, is reproduced in Table I below. The data have been rearranged in classes to indicate the underlying distribution. While there is only limited data (N=33), the distribution looks as if it could be the sum of two normal distributions with means around 0.5 and 0.8, or possibly a log-normal distribution. What is quite clear is that it is nota single normal distribution.

A comprehensive review of ore pass records, from ten Quebec underground mines, indicated some of the limitations of available design tools to predict the occurrence of ore pass interlocking hang-ups in metal mines. The Distinct Element Method was used to perform a series of numerical experiments in order to investigate the influence of ore pass geometry, rock fragments shape and size distribution on material flow in an ore pass. Guidelines have been developed to help limit the occurrence of interlocking hang-ups in an ore pass. The proposed guidelines were evaluated with respect to field observations. Ein kompletter Bericht der Erzrollezeichnungen, von 10 Quebec unterirdischen Gruben, hat einige der Beschränkungen der vorhandenen Designwerkzeuge angezeigt, um das Auftreten Erzrolle der blockierenhang-ups in den Metallgruben genau vorauszusagen. Des séries de modélisations numériques, utilisant la méthode des éléments distincts, ont été réalisées afin d’évaluer l’influence de la géométrie des cheminées, de la forme des fragments rocheux et de la distribution granulométrique sur l’écoulement du matériel dans les cheminées. Cet exercice a permis de développer des lignes directrices pour le dimensionnement des cheminées afin de limiter l’occurrence d’accrochage par enchevêtrement rocheux. Les lignes directrices proposées ont été évaluées en fonction des observations effectuées sur le terrain.

South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

It is well documented that a significant amount of the new PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) production that is coming on stream now, and over the next few years, is to come from the UG-2 reef. Clearly the reservations, or perhaps the perceived reservations, attached to the processing of this ore are no longer there. What were the metallurgical issues that delayed the exploitation of the PGM values from this reef? Traditional furnaces treating Merensky concentrates were not able to accept the concentrate produced from a UG-2 plant due to the relatively high chromite content of this product. The chromite reports to an insoluble spinel phase that accretes in the furnace, resulting in the necessity to shutdown and dig the furnace out periodically. This was clearly not an attractive economic option, so producers stayed away from it in the early days. The Merensky ore had all higher base metal credits anyway, and you needed them to get a matte fall, so there was no driving force to look seriously at the UG-2 reef. Platinum demand at this time could be easily met from the Merensky ore, so the motivation to tackle more complex ores was not there. The low price of PGMs meant that these operations were not particularly profitable and there was little effort directed at improving the operations. Concentrators were generally not run very efficiently and the emphasis was on cost reduction through increasing milling rates.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

Variogram analysis and kriging lack robustness in the presence of outliers and data with long-tailed distributions, which often arises when estimating grades in precious metal deposits. The capping technique, consisting of truncating the data to some top-cut grade, is widely used in order to mitigate the influence of the values in the upper tail of the distribution. However, this procedure omits part of the grade variability and is likely to provoke a bias in the estimates. To avoid these issues, a recently proposed approach is to decompose the grade of interest into three components (the truncated grade, a weighted indicator above the top-cut grade, and a zero-mean residual) and jointly estimate the truncated grade and the indicator by cokriging. This approach is attractive as it provides unbiased grade estimates, allows choosing the ?optimal? top-cut value, and essentially works with truncated and indicator data, thus avoiding the use of outlying values for calculating sample variograms and performing spatial interpolation. This work presents an application of this approach to a disseminated gold deposit that has been identified through exploration drilling. The effect of using an indicator covariate is assessed through leave-one-out cross-validation, by comparing the grade estimates with the true grades and with the grade estimates obtained with the conventional capping approach, which considers only the truncated grade as the variable of interest. As a result, cokriging the truncated grade and the indicator above top-cut grade outperforms the conventional capping approach, yielding significantly more accurate estimates. A few complementary guidelines are provided for validating the model hypotheses and for the implementation of cokriging.

Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.
