Cato Ridge Alloys (CRA) is a joint venture company between Assmang of South Africa, Mizushima Ferro Alloy Company (MZK) and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan. Negotiations for the formation of the company started in 1992 with the joint venture agreement signed on the 19th September 1996. MZK was to supply the technical know how for the production of Medium and Low Carbon FeMn while Assmang was to manage the day to day activities of the company. Sumitomo Corporation was to act as facilitator between Assmang and MZK and, together with Ore and Metal are responsible for the marketing of the refined products. The conceptual design of the plant started in December 1996 and the first charge of molten high carbon ferromanganese metal was charged on the 19th January 1998. Problems experienced during the initial startup period were addressed resulting in substantial operational improvements. A build-up in the stock of fine metal was addressed through the development of a process to remelt the fine metal, the development of a market for fine metal and the upgrading of the crushing and screening plant to reduce the generation of fine metal. The mass yield from High Carbon Ferromanganese to Refined Ferromanganese was increased through the implementation of statistical process control, changes to the blowing patterns and the development of a sampling device for taking samples during the process. Converter refractory consumption was reduced. This was achieved on the converter by improving the cooling of the converters with the installation of cooling fans and cooling fins. The heating schedule of the converters was changed for improved refractory life. Production schedules were modified to allow cooling of the refractory between low carbon erromanganese charges. Additional changes made to improve operations were: ? Changing from mehanite casting trays to metal fines beds. ? Installation of sonic horns in the baghouse to prevent the bridging of dust. ? Improved welding on the lance tips.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

PNEUFLOT® technology has been applied for the past 20 years in coal, ore and other minerals processing plants. During the last two years this technology has achieved a breakthrough with some 42 units being sold signifying a rising trend. »Humboldt Wedag Coal & Minerals Technology« has performed extensive research and development work over the last five years. The results of which were used to design a new fourth generation aerator. Humboldt Wedag, through its association with EKOF, can offer a holistic solution encompassing both flotation equipment and reagents. It is the only company in the world able to offer such a package. The association with EKOF strengthens the Humboldt Wedag product offering, especially as the company in-troduced pneumatic flotation cells to the South African market in the form of the PNEUFLOT®. Before starting pilot scale test work, a mineralogical analysis has to be carried out to determine the mineral com-position as well as the liberation grade. HW-CMT works together with independent institutes. Different reagent regimes can be tested in laboratory scale. Pilot machines, each packed in a 20? container, are available to carry out extensive test work at customers? processing plants. A group of engineers from HW-CMT is involved in the pilot test work. The flexible pilot machines are designed to cater for coal, ores and other minerals. The small feed rates of 7 ? 12 m³/h only means the pilot machines do not disturb the operation of process plants. Batch tests have to be carried out to determine the numbers of PNEU-FLOT® stages. New applications in iron ore, copper ore, platinum group minerals, rock phosphate and potash were suc-cessfully tested in the last three years. In applications where the feed material is very fine, PNEUFLOT® technology is able to achieve high recoveries with particle sizes where conventional technology failed.

A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start-up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators, in particular, to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement of operating this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ?400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomization. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to HATCH high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tap blocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area), coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the HATCH Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

Scaling of rockpasses was problematic at Tau Lekoa Mine prior to production commencing in 1991. High horizontal stress levels relative to the host rock mass strength have been instrumental in causing the observed scaling. Scaling has been more pronounced in the deeper rockpasses and these are monitored regularly. Rehabilitation of one of the reef passes and one of the waste passes was required in the period 1999 to 2001. This paper describes the extent of the problems experienced to date as well as the rehabilitation completed.

A paper was presented by Bateman Minerals and Metals at INFACONX (2004) describing a simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model for predicting the temperature and velocity distributions in all the fluid zones of a single electrode DC Furnace simultaneously with the temperature distributions in the refractory lining of the vessel. The boundary conditions imposed on the model consisted of the arc current, external surface film coefficients and ambient temperatures. The temperature and velocity distributions in the free-board, slag and metal were solved simultaneously by coupling across the interfaces between the fluids and transportation phenomena developing in the plasma arc. A simplified model was used to describe the ex-change of energy by radiation between the arc and surfaces enclosing the freeboard region. The strengths of this model were reported as being the ability to: ?Solve the different zones and transportation phenomena simultaneously without the need to transfer partial numerical results between different numerical analysis applications. ?Solve velocity and temperature distributions without assumptions regarding internal film coefficients and additional internal temperature boundary conditions. One of the disadvantages of the model was that the energy absorbed by the process was not modelled, resulting in vessel performance predictions under heat loss conditions only. Whilst this allowed potential problem areas such as localized refractory heating to be identified, the model was only capable of predicting how these could be improved by varying the overall geometry and materials of construction. This paper presents improvements in the application software and user defined subroutines of the model as follows: ?Incorporation of surface to gas, gas to gas and gas to surface radiation models to improve the accuracy of radiative heat transfer mechanisms within the freeboard. ?Incorporation of a process energy absorption model based on a theoretical temperature dependant enthalpy curve which incorporates melting, smelting and superheating in selected areas of the bath. This enables the effect of feed distribution and power to feed ratio changes to be estimated. The effects of a commercial arc at full power on the freeboard and slag can now be simulated with increased accuracy.

This paper introduces the multi fractal interpolation method (MIM)developed for handling singularities in data analysis and for data interpolation. The MIM is a new moving average model for spatial mapping and interpolation. The model decomposes the raw data into two components: singular and nonsingular components. The former can be characterized by a localized singularity index that quantifies the scaling invariance property of measures from a multifractal point of view. The latter is a smooth component that can be estimated using ordinary kriging or other moving average models. The local singularity index characterizes the concave/convex properties of the neighbourhood values. The paper utilizes a binomial multiplicative cascade model todemonstrate the generation of one- and two-dimensional data with multi-scale singularities which can be modelled by asymmetrical multifractal distribution. It then introduces a generalized moving average mathematical model for analysing and interpolating data with singularities. Finally, it is demonstrated by a one-dimensional case study of de Wijs’ data from a profile in a zinc mine, that incorporation of spatial association and singularity can improve the interpolation result, especially for observed values with significant singularities.

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

Phase equilibria have been determined experimentally for pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-(CaO+MgO)-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.17 and MgO/CaO weight ratios of 0.25 and 0.17 respectively for temperatures in the range 1473-1673 K. The primary phase fields present for the MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.17 include manganosite (Mn,Mg,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate a-2(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2; merwinite 3CaO·(Mg,Mn)O·2SiO2; wollastonite [(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2]; diopside [(CaO,MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?SiO2]; tridymite (SiO2); tephroite [2(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2]; rhodonite [(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2] and melilite [2CaO?(MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?2(SiO2,Al2O3)]. For the section with MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.25 the anorthite phase (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) is also present. The liquidus temperatures of ferro- and silico-manganese smelting slags have been determined. The liquidus temperatures at low MnO concentrations are shown to be principally dependent on the modified basicity weight ratio (CaO+MgO)/(SiO2+Al2O3).

A common problem encountered in British coal mines is bearing failure on conveyor system idler rollers, which on occasions has led to fires. The UK Mines Inspectorate initiated a study of such failures to assess the potential for ignition of explosive atmospheres. As part of this study HSL have developed a system to measure the temperatures generated within the bearings during controlled failure. Temperatures are measured using both infrared thermal imaging and contact thermometry. The work to date has shown that temperatures well in excess of the auto-ignition temperature of methane can occur.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

Rock engineering plays a crucial role in contributing to sustainable development in South African mining. A framework for this has been created through legislation and structures to encourage the mining industry to have a long and prosperous future. However, rock engineering input is an essential element to achieving success. The most accessible deposits have been mined in South Africa and although large reserves still remain, many of these are difficult to access and will require excellent rock engineering knowledge and skill in the future. This is borne out by the fact that more than 50 % of fatal accidents are related to rock engineering issues. Many of these may be addressed with rock engineering solutions which are not beyond current rock engineering technology. A reduction in fatalities and injuries contributes to a sustainable mining industry.

"A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

An inter-disciplinary geotechnical study has been carried out in an Austrian magnesite mine. The paper describes the how geological data, in situ and laboratory tests as well as subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods have been used to identify critical areas in the mine. Analysis of the major and minor components of raw zircon as well as plasma-dissociated zircon was undertaken using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Microwave-assisted acid extraction as well as flux fusion using lithium tetraborate were investigated as digestion methods. Microwave-assisted acid extraction samples were analysed with matrix-matched standards. The most successful microwave-assisted acid extractions yielded 44.3(1), 49.75(7), 78.3(3) and 90.0(7) per cent recovery for Zr, Hf, Al, and Fe respectively using sulphuric acid. In no instance was acid extraction capable of complete digestion of the sample matrix. A standard addition method was applied to the flux-fusion samples due to the high complexity of the sample matrix. Method validation for the flux fusion procedure was performed using the SARM 62 certified reference material (CRM) with acceptable recovery ranges being based on the 95 per cent confidence intervals of the CRM. Successful analyses were achieved for Zr, Hf, and Ti with apparent content of 66(6), 1.7(1) and 0.15(1) per cent respectively.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

Abstract: In order to develop non-destructive methods in studying physical and mechanical properties of rock and replacing them with difficult and expensive static methods, several ultrasonic tests were carried out on cylindrical rock specimens in accordance with the ISRM suggested methods and velocity of P and S waves were determined. Also, density, porosity, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were determined for each specimen in accordance with ISRM suggested methods. According to above tests static and dynamic elastic constants were calculated After statistical analysis of data obtained from tests, the relationships between velocity of elastic waves and physical or mechanical parameters were determined and some equations were obtained. Also similar analyses were performed on static and dynamic constants and some equations were extracted. Using these equations, the physical and mechanical parameters of rock and also static elastic constants can be estimated by conducting simple and quick tests (i.e. ultrasonic tests). Außer der Dichtheit und der Porosität betonen Wasser Aufnahme und monoaxial Widerstand und dehnbaren indirekten Widerstand jeder Probe betreffend der erhaltenen Ergebnisse die atmosphärische Aufladung sind bestimmt worden und die dynamischen Faktoren der Steine sind kalkuliert worden. Nachdem statistische Analyse die Korrelation der Ergebnisse zwischen der Geschwindigkeit elastischer Wellen und mechanischer und physischer Eigentümer der Steine erhalten worden ist, und mehrere Verhältnisse sind vorgeschlagen worden. Eine ähnliche Analyse ist auf atmosphärischer Aufladung und dynamischen Faktoren durchgeführt worden und einige Verhältnisse sind erhalten worden. Mit Hilfe dieser Verhältnisse die physischen und mathematischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch können die Statistik Faktoren durch einfachen und schnellen altrasonic Prüfungen erhalten werden. Ferroalloy furnaces are well known to be extremely difficult to control from a metallurgical perspective. Mostly metallurgical control is still reactive in nature, causing a significant amount of reworking and product blending to achieve a proper product specification. Despite numerous efforts towards the model based control of primary smelting operations, actual metallurgical feed forward control seems to remain elusive. One of the key reasons in the failure to model these metallurgical reactors well, is that fundamentally orientated pyrometallurgists, statisticians, data miners and control engineers very often have diverging ideas how to model these systems. Furthermore, metallurgists have often come to rely on their ability to develop empirical regression models of furnace behaviour, as they have lost their faith in the ability of thermochemical and metallurgical engineering fundamentals to accurately predict the outcomes from furnaces. This paper shows how good thermochemical modelling can be combined with proper technological and systems analysis, as well as a proper inventory model, to predict the alloy and slag chemistry with good accuracy one tap into the future, at a time horizon of typically around 4 to 6 hours. For this modelling approach, a number of tools will be used, such as data reconciliation, thermodynamic modelling using Fact Sage®, inventory and heel estimation, neural networks and statistical data exploration. Furthermore, systems identification theory will be combined with the approaches given above to develop a truly dynamic predictive model. This paper seeks to demonstrate the need for a hybrid approach, which incorporates plant data and readily accessible thermodynamic data to develop a proper dynamic model.

Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. In 1989 The First Brigade for Geology and Mineral Exploration of Qinghai Province discovered gold at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan, Tanjianshan. Between 1992 and 2002 small scale mining was carried out at these sites using underground mining methods at Jinlonggou and an open pit at Qinlongtan. During 2003 and 2004 geotechnical investigations were carried out in support of a bankable feasibility study. An important objective of this investigation was to meet both internationally accepted standards and codes of practice, and also to satisfy the Chinese requirements. Extensive use of local experience was utilised. Where possible geological drilling information was incorporated into the assessment. Extensive geotechnical mapping of surface and underground exposures, and index testing to gain an appreciation of rock intact strength were used to characterise the sites. Rock mass classification (MRMR) was used to assess indicative overall slope angles and appropriate bench stack heights for the proposed pits at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan. Measured discontinuity orientations were used in kinematic analysis to assess stability of possible pit slope geometry at a batter and overall scale to provide preliminary recommendations for the pit slope configuration. Numerical modelling was also carried out to improve the understanding of anticipated pit behaviour. Site investigation and preliminary geotechnical design details, that incorporate site specific conditions for the formation of open pits at Tanjianshan, are discussed in this paper.
