Lafarge Corporation's Texas Quarry, in Baltimore MD, achieved a substantial expansion of pit reserves by removing an inactive underground mine. The day lighting program, designed, and completed in 1997, open pit mined more than 400 meters of room and pillar workings which were originally developed to recover high brightness Calcium Carbonate. The project proved to be a challenge throughout its course as the pit plan was modified and successful daylighting techniques were developed to remove the mine without adversely affecting the safety of the operation, quality of the stone recovered, or negatively impacting the surrounding community. The design parameters and techniques developed and implemented at Texas may prove of interest to other operators as they are faced with daylighting opportunities. This article will detail the challenges we faced and the solutions which made the project a success.

The global mining industry has recorded significant declines in accident and injury rates attributed to the advancement in technology, increased enforcement, and safety consciousness. A goal of the mining industry is to achieve zero injury and occupational illness on all mine sites, prompting increased research into ways to further reduce mine accidents. A machine learning technique known as multiclass logistic regression is applied on a 10-year injury dataset from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine a miner’s susceptibility to a class of injury and to help identify significant risk factors associated with different classes of injury. The data is aggregated based on injury classification to provide statistically relevant results. The analysis identifies specific risk factors that influence a mine worker’s susceptibility to a given class of injury, i.e., non-fatal with no days lost or restricted activity, non-fatal with days lost and/or days of restricted work activity, and fatal and total permanent or partial permanent disability. These factors include miner’s age, mine type (coal vs. non-coal), experience on the current job (years), shift start time, employment type (operator vs. contractor), mining district, and type of accident. The results of the analysis indicate that a miner’s experience on the job, i.e., the number of years worked in a current job, is a significant risk to injury occurrence, even for those with decades of total mining experience. We further show the differences and similarities between the surface and underground mine incidents.

Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multi-gaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multi-variate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar--and accurate--estimates for recoverable reserves.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. The safe and efficient driving of the roadway along the gob is becoming an increasing challenge due to the influence of the integrity and bearing capacity of the side coal and rock mass in the gob under the roof cutting mining mode. The mechanism of protection of the gob-side roadway is shown by modeling the influence of roof cutting and the application of a destress technique on the lateral coal and rock mass zones. The distribution characteristics of stress, displacement, and fracture in the overburden are analyzed by numerical simulation method under the three working conditions. The results indicate (1) construction of row holes and blasting can form artificial structure’s fracture plane above the roadway, which can effectively cut the connection of overburden. The artificial structure’s fracture plane decreases the peak value of the lateral coal body’s support pressure. The peak point and the critical location of the stress reduction area are both transferred to the deep part at the same time, providing adequate space for the gob-side roadway. (2) The stress arch foot in the lateral rock mass rises to the rock layer at the bottom of the roof cutting plane after top cutting, as does the high-pressure area of deviator stress. The fracture plane prevents lateral coal and rock mass instability and limits the negative effects of roof deformation above the gob-side roadway. (3) The triangle slip fracture zone moves to over the roof cutting drilling zone due to the fracture plane, showing a high position compared to its original zone.

[Duquesne Light Company's three power plants in western Pennsylvania are now receiving high BTU clean coal from a new coal preparation plant. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

Beneficiation studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for concentrating phosphate minerals from the altered rock of the Phosphoria Formation. This report describes research on intermediate - and marginal-grade ores from southeast Idaho, The process developed consists of attrition scrubbing and sizing to produce a coarse concentrate; desliming at about 800 mesh (18.5 microns); flotation of the fine sands; roasting of the combined concentrates for removal of organic carbon and combined water; and leaching with SO2 for removal of magnesium and nonapatitic calcite. Results of continuous tests on three different ore types showed that approximately 80 percent of the available phosphate can be recovered at a grade suitable for phosphoric acid production. While leaching with SO2 is not necessary for all ore types, it is an important step in purifying concentrates containing excessive magnesium.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. Three major types of solution chemical equilibria involving flotagents (Le. flotation reagents such as collectors, frothers and modifiers), minerals and solution play a crucial role in determining the behavior of complex flotation systems. Minerals of phosphates (apatite and francolite), tungsten (wolframite and scheelite) and associated carbonates (calcite and dolomite) are sparingly soluble in aqueous solution and form dissolved mineral species in bulk solution. Such dissolved species interact with mineral solids, often resulting in surface conversion of the minerals. In addition, they can interact with various flotagents and lead to surface or bulk precipitation and loss of selectivity in the flotation. Relevant solution equilibria of such sparingly soluble minerals and their interactions with oleic acid and structurally modified reagents were determined in this study using a multi-pronged experimental approach. Methods to manipulate and control the solution chemical equilibria and thus achieve selectivity in flotation systems are discussed.

In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

Specifically, the effects of preferential classification, bypassed fines, and the sharpness of classification will be examined. Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.

A modified 3D Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm is presented that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher aver-age value) branches. The final set of strong branches are listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single variable pit limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been applied at Newmont.

INTRODUCTION An innovative Ø.1-MGD (378.5-m3/day) biological and phyicochemical wastewater treatment system at Hancock, Massachusetts, USA, has been treating the domestic sewage generated from the four-season Jiminy Peak timeshare resort since 1985. The influent raw sewage is collected and equalized in an equalization tank, then biologically treated by two rotating biological contactors (RBC). A portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to a secondary sedimentation tank to simulate conventional waste treatment by a conventional RBC system. For parallel treatment the remaining portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to an innovative Sandfloat (SASF-8) clarifier to simulate a two-stage biological and physicochemical treatment by RBC-Sandfloat. Both secondary sedimentation effluent and Saandfloat effluent are later combined together and discharged to a tertiary sand filter and two UV disinfection'units for final polishing. The operation and performance data of Jiminy Peak plant in the period of May 1985 to March 1988 was fully documented in the Lenox Institute technical report No. LIR/Ø3-88/292 (391 pages, March 1988). This report presents only background information and complete plant data in the period of April 1988 to January 1989. Dr. Lawrence K. Wang and Mr. James P. Van Dyke have been the Consulting Engineer and Director of Special Projects, respectively, for the Jiminy Peak Project since 1985. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Jimmy Peak, Inc., Hancock, Massachusetts, has designed and constructed a secondary wastewater treatment system consisting of preliminary/primary treatment facilities, two rotating biological contactors, a dissolved air flotation clarifier, a secondary sedimentation clarifier, a sand filter and two ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units. Total average wastewater flow is approximately Ø.1 ) (378.5 cubic meters per day). In accordance with the Consulting Engineer's preliminary design, the total wastewater stream is initially collected and equalized by an equalization tank, and then biologically treated by rotating biological contactors (RBC). Part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a Krofta Sandfloat (SASF-8) for physicochemical clarification in order to simulate an innovative RBC-Sandfloat two-stage waste treatment system. The remaining part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a sedimentation tank for secondary clarification in order to siumulate a conventional secondary RBC-sedimentation waste treatment system for the purpose of parallel comparison. Both Sandfloat effluent and sedimentation effluent are later combined together and discharged to the subsequent sand filter and UV disinfection unit for final polishing. Figure 1 shows the flow diagram of Jiminy Peak Plant. The Massachusetts Clean Waters Act (M.G.L.c.2l,s.26-53) was amended by Chapter 246 of the Acts of 1973 to authorize the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering (DEQE), Division of water Pollution Control, Boston, Massachusetts, to regulate discharges into all waters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including groundwaters. The DEQE regulates discharges through the issuance of discharge permits which impose limitations on the amount of pollutants which may be discharged in the effluent, together with monitoring and reporting requirements and other conditions to insure adequate treatment of all liquid wastes prior to discharge. The DEQE reviewed the application submitted on behalf of Jiminy Peak, Inc. for a permit to discharge sanitary wastes from the Jiminy Peak secondary wastewater treatment system located off Brodie Mountain Road, Hancock, Massachusetts, and subsequently developed the conditions contained in the Groundwater Discharge Permit No. Ø-188. More specifically, Jiminy Peak, Inc. It is a matter of importance to use the lower alkyl monoethers of propylene glycol (polyPGME) as a frother in sulfide mineral flotation, for their compounds are highly soluble in water and are surface active frothers to some extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify fundamental roles of frothers in sulfide mineral flotation by investigating the effects of polyPGME on the floatability of galena with xanthate and adsorption property those ethers at the liquid/air interface. Fundamental investigation on the flotation of sulfide minerals using o,o-dialkyl dithiophosphates has been carried out through galena floatability tests in the following two cases:(l)single use of dithiophosphate for sulfide mineral collection and (2) joint use of dithiophosphates for its collection.

"Froth flotation circuits are widely used throughout the mineral processing industry for the concentration of fine particles. It had been estimated that nearly 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of ores are treated globally each year using this versatile separation process (Fuerstenau, 1999). Due to the high feed tonnage, a large economic incentive exists for flotation plant operators to optimize the performance of this critical processing circuit. Prior to the 1950s, the optimization of flotation circuits primarily involved the manual adjustment of operating variables based on visual observation and sporadic sampling (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson, 2010). During the next several decades, however, the advent of improved on-line instrumentation coupled with the rapid development of high-speed microprocessors allowed the industry to develop more advanced control systems that could quickly adjust operational parameters in response to disturbances in ore characteristics and plant flows. These early online controls typically involved feedback loops designed to stabilize cell performance through the automatic manipulation of process variables such as pulp levels, gas rates and chemical dosages. The set-points for these controllers were often set by plant operators based on one or more operator objectives, such as maximizing throughput, recovery or grade. More recently, these regulatory controllers have been interfaced with high-level data display and management systems that provide operators with the ability to better optimize flotation plant performance based on mathematical models and rule-based algorithms (Greet, 2010).While tremendous strides have been made during the past several decades, even the most modern flotation plants are still faced with the long-standing question: “What are we trying to optimize?” From an operator perspective, some common responses include “Maximize tonnage of saleable concentrate” or “Maximize metals recovery at a customer-specified market grade.” These replies may or may not reflect those of management, who often focus on economic goals such as “Maximize profits for each operational unit” or “Maximize rate of return for all corporate assets.” Unfortunately, these high-level objective statements do not always translate well into practice due to the disconnect between plant operating protocols and product value. Attempts have been made by industry to overcome this issue using various types of optimization routines such as linear programming or other optimization engines. While this approach does have some merit, these blind routines require considerable input data and interpretational expertise and provide little or no fundamental insight that can be used to drive improvements in concentrator performance."

The present study provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities in processing complex gold-copper ores. The systematic literature review was conducted using Scopus database and seven-step methodological approach. The study indicates that the major challenges in processing complex gold-copper ores through the conventional cyanidation method include (1) increase in cyanide consumption; (2) increase in cyanide destruction cost; (3) low gold recovery; (4) decrease in adsorption efficiency; (5) decrease in electrowinning efficiency, and (6) difficulties in the measurement of free cyanide concentration in the leaching system. Moreover, the study indicates that several methods have been developed and some have been implemented in the mining industry for processing complex gold-copper ores. This includes ore segregation, pre-aeration, pre-treatment methods (e.g., ammonia), alternative lixiviants (e.g., thiosulfate, thiocyanate, glycine), cyanide destruction methods, and cyanide and copper recovery technologies. The study concluded that using lixiviant mixtures (e.g., cyanide-glycine), pre-treatment with environmentally friendly reagents (e.g., glycine) and the integrated membrane-based process (SuCy process) are new directions in processing complex gold-copper ores. However, more investigations are required to advance these processes to a commercial scale.

This study probed the selective separation of lanthanum and yttrium in a nitrate medium in the presence of aluminum and calcium impurities using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The factors studied in a central composite design (CCD) included extractant concentration, pH, concentration ratio of total impurities to rare earth elements, and interaction of these three factors. The extraction mechanism and types of extracted metal-containing species were delineated by the slope analysis method. The obtained thermodynamic data showed that lanthanum and yttrium extraction by the D2EHPA extractant was exothermic. The extraction of both rare earth elements was accompanied by an entropy reduction. The negative magnitude of ΔS in yttrium extraction reaction suggests stronger D2EHPA-Y(III) complexation relative to La(III). As entropy decreased and enthalpy increased, the extraction process became unspontaneous. Using the proposed flowsheet, lanthanum and yttrium products with > 90% purity were obtained.
