Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

Efficient particle classification is essential to enhance gravity and magnetic separation stages in one iron ore beneficiation plant. This study investigates the use of high-frequency screens to process finely ground iron ore, focusing on two size cuts: 400 μm and 100 μm. Pilot-scale trials were performed on four ore blends using a full-scale screening unit. A total of 48 tests were conducted, evaluating the effects of panel aperture, solids concentration, wash water, and feed particle size distribution. Results showed that wash water improved efficiency by up to 5%, while a solids concentration near 40% w/w delivered high separation performance with minimal ultra-fines in oversize streams. Apertures slightly larger than the target cut sizes yielded better precision in particle separation. Feed particle size distribution had limited impact on efficiency. The investigation successfully identified optimal screening conditions, including aperture selection, to achieve the most effective separation performance for downstream concentration processes.

This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

In 1989, United States mine production of barite decreased 13% while world mine production decreased by 8.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 21.2%. And imports decreased by 12.8%. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, increased 17.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported crude barite during 1989 increased from $38.10/t ($34.56 per st) in 1988 to $40.27/t($36.54 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 77% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 75% of the domestic mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the nonoilfield sector. Of the total consumption used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 80% was used in drilling fluids. The other 20% was used in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1989. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 869, 7.2% less than the average of 936 in 1988. Crude barite imports were down 12.8% from 1988. Imports accounted for 73.8% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the US. China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 63% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 27.4%, Peru 4.3%, Chile 2.9%, and Canada and Mexico, each with 1.1 %. About 97% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

The search for minerals typically starts with a reconnaissance phase. After finding a promising target area, further prospecting work will be conducted. Finally with growing confidence of having encountered an ore deposit with commercially viable concentrations of relevant minerals, an extensive exploration campaign will verify its potential. Best practice and reliable, efficient tools for mineral resource estimation of massive sulfide deposits in the deep sea have to be established yet. Therefore, a new seabed exploration system is in development. Various challenges are caused by the extreme environmental conditions in the deep sea and by the nature of massive sulfide deposits. Information of past and ongoing expeditions were gathered to form the basis of an in-depth requirement analysis. System functions and corresponding process times were derived. The experience from the existing MeBo seabed drill rigs serve as starting point for the concept study and following development. Initial MeBo system was built for maritime research purposes and now has to be converted into a new design, suitable for efficient and economic resource exploration. The new system configuration is modular structured to adapt easily to different application scenarios and challenges. To achieve an extension of the deployment depths, the overall equipment weight has to be limited through light weight construction and material. The drilling module contains a range of geotechnical coring tools to face the varying soil conditions of heterogeneous massive sulfide formations. The major challenge to overcome is the touch down sequence on uneven, 25° inclined, rough terrain in up to 4.000 m water depth. Furthermore, high precision of the final unit positioning is necessary. Landing sub-system proof of concept is validated in laboratory environment with small scale model. A novel seabed exploration system capable to land and operate safely on highly inclined slopes of mineral deposit is described. Obtaining high quality samples by wire-line coring technique is the objective.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

This work applies the definition of "separation function" already introduced in the paper presented at the XVIII IMPC. This 'function" (defined for a certain size distribution after comminution of an ore) refers to the recovery distribution of a mineralogical species in a product made up of all the particles having at least a given content of that species. Many tests would be required to determine the liberation function for each mineralogical species, particularly for complex ores. Several stages of comminution would need to be examined and the mineralogical composition of the particles of each grain size class would need to be analyzed for each process step. A quick and dirty method is shown for obtaining the "separation function". It is based on the processing of data from topological maps of polished and/or thin representative sections of ore. By superimposing grids of different sizes over these maps and with appropriate combinations of mesh sizes, it is possible to simulate the grain size distributions linked to different stages of comminution and then evaluate the mineralogical composition of each grain. The procedure is carried out full automatically and can simulate a complete treatment circuit, imposing cut-off grades for the products at each separation phase. It is also possible to predict the results of treatment processes that involve grinding phases. The procedure has been successfully applied to complex ores containing several useful components.

Discovery of a mine is a complex affair. No mine is simply found but comes about through the efforts of many. It is difficult to establish "credit" when a mine is found and becomes a viable operation, or "guilt" when a mine is lost, goes bankrupt, or remains undeveloped. The story of the Toquepala and Cuajone developments entails various stages of: (1) discovery and recognition; (2) testing and innovation; (3) political and industrial negotiation and intrigue; and (4) finance, development, and operation. The Toquepala and Cuajone projects introduced innovative drilling techniques, were among the first major porphyry copper deposits to utilize induced polarization (1P)geophysical methods, were among the first deposits to undertake complete feasibility studies on drilled- out ore bodies, and were developed by the first large Western Hemisphere copper mining consortium. Many persons have contributed to the development of these two great deposits. Some of the names have been lost and certain contributions have gone unrecognized. I apologize for these omissions.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The iron ore industry presently utilizes two types of de-posits. The first are the high grade deposits generally located in remote areas and, secondly, the low grade de-posits which are normally found nearer to the steel-making centers. The high grade deposits produce a direct shipping ore which has an iron content which may be close to the maxi-mum 70% of Fe. These deposits have reserves which are ex-pressed in billions of tons. The ore needs little or no up-grading and where this is performed is restricted to ore washing. With the large demand for iron ore pellets, plus a national drive to perform as much of the upgrading as possible in the native country, there is a trend to erecting pellet plants at the mine location~ Large iron ore suppliers such as Australia, Brazil, Venezuela and Liberia already have pellet plants in operation, and there are new plants projected or expansion projects under study. The low grade ores are mined at locations closer to steel mills such as in Minnesota, Michigan and Canada. These low grade ores require methods of beneficiation to obtain a commercially accept-able product with the modern beneficiation techniques it is no~, possible to produce iron ore pellets of 68% Fe and 4.5% silica from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Figure 1 gives a general picture of the types of iron ores and their beneficiation. The final product of the high grade ore is a coarse concentrate, sinter product or pellets. The final product of the low grade ores is pellets and, in some cases, coarse concentrates.

In order for the North American iron ore industry to remain competitive with high-grade overseas sources, research on low-cost beneficiation methods that ensure high-quality and uniform-quality products must be maintained in order to prepare for ever-tightening specifications on iron making raw materials for blast furnaces and also for the future iron- and steelmaking processes that can directly utilize finely ground concentrates.

Plants obtain nutrients from both air and soil. They absorb carbon dioxide mainly from the air, although some carbon dioxide may be dissolved in soil water which is absorbed by plant roots. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Growing plants use water more than any other biological substance. Plant nutrients dissolve in soil water and enter the plant via root absorption. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Water also supplies hydrogen and oxygen to plants. Plant roots absorb nutrient cations or anions by contact exchange with soil clay particles. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from soil reserves and must be provided by fertilizers. The role of the fertilizer industry is to provide economical, efficient, good quality fertilizers to improve or maintain soil productivity for optimum crop production. The essential plant nutrients other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which often must be added to soils or plants are categorized as primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), secondary nutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and micronutrients (boron, chlorine, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and do not imply their function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all fertilizer minerals contain the plant nutrients in a chemical form available to the plant. A product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient source or fertilizer.

The coagulation of dispersed ultrafine weakly-magnetic oxide mineral particles (e.g., natural hematite and chromite) in an external magnetic field can be described by interparticle forces. Essentially, coagulation occurs when the short-range London-van der Waals interactions and the long-range magnetic forces outweigh the stabilizing electrical double-layer repulsion. Using the classical colloid chemistry theory, the various components of the potential energy for different-sized particles at a series of ionic strengths and magnetic field intensities were calculated. The results of this theoretical analysis were then related to the results obtained from experimental studies in which the magnetic field-induced coagulation of the ultrafines of natural hematite and chromite in aqueous suspensions were investigated using a laboratory-scale electromagnetic solenoid. The experimental results relate the coagulation process (as determined by magneto-sedimentation analysis) to the particle size, the slurry pH and the external magnetic field. In the magnetic fields, the maximum coagulation occurred near the pH of zero-point-of-charge (pHzpc) of the minerals (where the electrostatic double layer repulsion was reduced to a minimum) enabling the particles to enter the "primary minimum" energy sink. On the other hand, in cases where the electrostatic repulsion was not suppressed, the long-range magnetic forces enabled coagulation to occur in the "secondary minimum." This caused the formation of chains that appeared to be relatively stable during sedimentation.

Overburden excavation is an integral component of the surface mine production chain. The walking dragline is the most economic production equipment for overburden excavation in strip mining. Draglines are capital intensive, and thus, investments in multiple units severely impact the economic viability of projects. The use of few dragline units results in highly concentrated production focus, which must be efficiently managed to derive the potential economic benefits. Efficient use of draglines requires a thorough knowledge of the powered functions, the 3D rotational and translational motions and machine-formation interactions within the operating environment. Dragline kinematics and dynamics are required to understand and characterize machine performance and efficiency. In order to sustain the high productivity in difficult operating conditions, the dynamics of the dragline must be modeled and analyzed based on comprehensive kinematics. This paper investigates the planar kinematics of the front-end assembly and its interactions with the formation during excavation using the “Vector Loop Analysis” formulation with comprehensive simulation modeling in MATLAB Simulink. The kinematic models are used to examine the translational, rotational and angular displacement, velocity and acceleration components of the dragline front-end assembly along defined bucket trajectories during excavation. The results are the precursors for comprehensive modeling to examine the load deformation, torque requirements and dragline stress loading profiles for improving machine health and longevity.

Outcrops of the Nubian Sandstone Series cover approximately 180,000 km2 in southern Egypt. Within the series, oolitic iron ore beds occur. The only comprehensive information available on stratigraphy of the iron beds is for the area east of Aswan, otherwise information is exiguous, sparse or unreliable. Based on this low level of information, the iron potential of the Nubian Sandstone Series was assessed and an exploration strategy formulated specifically tailored to the assessment. The area covered by the Nubian was divided into five regions, each comprised of 100 cells. A spatial distribution, i.e. negative binomial, was assumed adequate to describe the number of targets per cell and was indirectly calculated using a compound poisson distribution. Estimate of the only unknown parameter - the average number of targets per cell - implicitly/explicitly incorporated available geologic and economic information into the assessment. A probability distribution for the number of targets per region was then derived from the cell probability distribution. An allocation model based on the regional probability distribution assessment as well as on an estimate of the exploration effectiveness and on the exploration budget determines the optimal time to be spent in each region.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. In the following there are some examples of guidelines and published information’s, ranked according to the year of issue, which are relevant for the development of waterproofing specifications in the tunnel industry:

Rico is a small town in an old zinc mining district in a mountain valley of southeastern Colorado. Mine waste rock and mill “tailings” remained after over 100 years of mining in the area, leaving associated surface water and groundwater impacts. Atlantic Richfield Company is proposing an innovative approach, which uses lime precipitation and wetland ponds (semi-natural system, also called treatment lagoon in a wetland setting) to treat adit water in the Rico area. Besides using a non-conventional treatment approach, a non-conventional (non-Superfund) regulatory/administrative approach is being proposed. This paper will focus on the water treatment issues and solutions, as well as describing the innovative “watershed” regulatory process.
